William H. Bonney, better known as Billy the Kid, is one of the most misunderstood characters in American history. The territorial newspapers and dime novels reaped great profits by promoting Billy as a cold killer. Those who knew the young man told a much different story. He was described as intelligent and humorous. He had fine manners and was very polite to women. He would not allow Mexican people to be disrespected. He went out of his way to help the old and the poor. Even his adversaries had only good things to say about him. Pat Garrett said that Billy was one of the finest gentlemen he ever knew. Charlie Siringo called him a prince of a human being. Governor Miguel Otero said that it was a terrible mistake that Billy's story had never been told by the Mexican people who loved him. Exactly who was this young outlaw? More than a hundred years after his death, we are still trying to answer that question.

So often the "villains of the Old West" are maligned and remembered only for the bad things that happened in their lives. But there is always another side. Patrick Manley gives us the personality of a boy who had those few chances and people who could have helped turn his life around taken from him. And in the end, betrayed by a self-serving Pat Garrett, Billy was shot unarmed. Murdered.I recommend this book to all those readers who are interested in truth and those who wonder why Billy made the choices he did.

I would recommend this to anyone who is looking to learn more about this shadowy figure, but doesn't want to get bogged down by the usual historical tomes. Written through the eyes of a fictional character it is page turning.

The characters seemed real and there was quite a bit of humor. I finally feel like I know who Billy the Kid was. There's a lot in here about the Lincoln County war and corrupt politics in New Mexico.

Tandem (Many-Worlds), by Anna Jarzab

From Booklist Sixteen-year-old Sasha Lawson can’t believe her good fortune: überpopular Grant Davis has asked her to the prom. But her ecstasy is short-lived when she finds herself transported to Aurora, Earth’s parallel universe, by Grant’s analog Thomas to impersonate Princess Juliana. Although Juliana is betrothed to Prince Callum in order to ensure a peaceful union between warring countries Aurora and Farnham, she has disappeared, leaving the treaty in jeopardy. Sasha, Juliana’s analog, must convince the country and her betrothed that she is the real princess—or risk her own safe return to Earth. The first title in the Many Worlds trilogy is a fascinating premise made more so by Jarzab’s use of parallel universe theories of physics. Sasha is spirited into Aurora through the tandem, a force field that moves one analog into another universe. Strange but plausible science weds old-fashioned legends of princesses trapped in towers, along with contemporary teen concerns. It’s a great mix, and fortunately, Jarzab leaves readers with the enticing and reassuring promise, “Not the end; only the beginning.” Grades 8-12. --Frances Bradburn

By Evie Seo Parallel universes, star-crossed lovers, drama, intrigue and treachery - these are just some of the things you'll find in Anna Jarzab's latest YA novel, Tandem. I really enjoyed reading Tandem. It's a well-written, captivating and very entertaining story that will appeal to fans of science fiction and fantasy alike. Personally, I think that even though the premise of it is strictly sci fi (travel between parallel realities), overall the book has a more fantasy (even fairytale) feel to it. At the same time, there's enough scientific trivia to keep all science geeks intrigued. Anna Jarzab managed to strike just the perfect balance between these two worlds - science and fantasy - and create something that is just as intellectually stimulating, as it is charming and visually pleasing. It's not a very fast-paced book, and some readers will inevitably find it too slow for their taste. That doesn't mean that there is no action - trust me, Tandem has plenty of it to offer. It's just that - and that's not a bad thing at all - Anna Jarzab takes time setting the atmosphere, building the world, and weaving in backgrounds. And she does all those subtle things that result in an intricate, complex and completely mesmerizing world. You can't help but fall in love with it. Both lead characters are interesting, their stories - engaging. I liked Thomas a lot, he made for a great love interest, and he was also a very good friend and bodyguard. Ambitious, dedicated, passionate, hard-working and reliable - he was always there for Sasha, ready to sacrifice his own life to protect her. There's this one passage describing/comparing Sasha and Juliana that I really love."If people were houses, Juliana was like the Citadel she'd grown up in - beautiful and well-appointed, but guarded and set apart - while Sasha was her grandfather's Hyde Park Victorian - cheerful and bright, with the windows and doors flung wide open."I think this is very spot-on. That's exactly how I perceived these two. Sasha, always curious and excited to learn new things, inviting adventures and welcoming challenges. She's a very positive person. Even as a little girl, she always dreamt of big adventures and experiences that would make her stronger and better as a person. Juliana, on the other hand, is very withdrawn and distant, distrustful and cold. A girl with a steel wall around her heart. These two, even though they're each other's analogs, are like night and day. The only thing I could possibly complain about is the lack of insight into Juliana's character. I really wanted to learn more about her and try to understand the motivations behind her actions and decisions, but all we really know about her is that she was unhappy with her life and wanted freedom to make her own decisions, which eventually pushed her to do what she did. Inevitably, that made her come across as a bit spoiled and extremely self-centred - and maybe that was the idea - but I felt like there was more to her character than we got to discover. I hope we'll see her in the next book, and that we'll get to explore her psyche a bit more. The ending was toe-curling. I won't lie, I was left dumb-founded. I couldn't believe what happened! Anna Jarzab finished the first novel in her Many-Worlds Trilogy with a huge bang, and I am now dying to read the next book!

By The Book Runner This was a clean YA read that reminded me of Across the Universe by Beth Revis and The Selection by Kiera Cass. The literature that was quoted and best corresponds to the books themes are: Alice in Wonderland, A Wrinkle in Time, Twelfth Night, The Odyssey. I have read alternate universe books before: by Bryan Davis's Beyond the Reflection's Edge (Echoes from the Edge) Series and Gretchen McNeil's book 3:59, so the trend must have changed from dystopias (Hunger Games Types) to Many-Worlds.Sasha Lawson lives in Chicago and has had a crush on Grant Davis since elementary school. Her parents died when she was eight and she lives with her grandfather who is a professor of Physics. When Grant unexpectedly asks her to the prom, she is baffled, yet thrilled and has a wonderful time with him until he takes her to be alone on a beach and she wakes up in a different universe."There was a part of me that yearned to be plucked out of my everyday life and thrust into some great adventure. My favorite heroine were girls who suddenly found themselves having to live by their wits in a world they didn't quite understand." Well, her wish was granted! It turns out that Grant isn't really the Grant she grew up with, but an analog of him named Thomas Meyhew. "An analog is a type of double. We all have them; if not in one universe, then in another and in an infinite number of others besides. Analogs should not touch or one of them is ejected from the universe they both stood in. They are essentially equal, but not identical".Sasha has been stolen from earth to take the place of her analog, a missing princess of Aurora, for the next six days. She was brought through a "Tandem: a veil that exists between two worlds, a barrier that was supposedly impermeable", but the science of many-worlds has discovered it and Thomas, under the orders of the General, has brought Sasha through to play this role.I enjoyed this story and starting romance with its themes of connection and identity. You can see the similarities of the changed identities of Twelfth Night, the adventure and people of The Odyssey and the feelings of Alice falling down the rabbit hole of Alice in Wonderland. But imagining the love of adventure and living it become two very different things when you also feel you have lost WHO you are along with WHERE you are.I liked enough to want to read the sequel called Tether which comes out in the summer of 2014 and to pass it on to my 15 year old daughter who LOVED it.Some non-descriptive kissing and very little profanity (2gd's, 1 sh**t, some damns)Would I/Did I buy it? Yes,Would I read it again? MaybeWould I recommend it to friends? Yes

Strong Beginning, SLOW Middle, Fantastic Ending By The Three Woods This is not the first writer to pen several different "mirror" worlds so the storyline isn't new. However, it was still a very good read even if it did drag a little in the middle. Sasha is your typical teenage girl who is trying to get by life in high school with as little notice (and thus no drama) as possible. She's already lost her parents in a tragic accident and is living with her scientific grandfather who loves to tell her fantastical stories of parallel universes. Life is pretty much what she wants it to be save for one small unrequited crush. When Grant, the popular boy from high school (whom she's had a crush on), invites her to the prom she is flabbergasted but excitedly consents to be his date for the evening. Her dream date turns into a real life nightmare when he confesses he is not who she thinks he is. In fact, he isn't from her world at all - he's really named Thomas and is an elite guard/special agent from his world. I felt Sasha's hopelessness and frustration as she quickly finds that the impostor is telling the truth and "she isn't in Kansas anymore." When it is revealed that she must replace the runaway Princess Juliana (whom we meet up with earlier in the book and gradually disdain) and marry the enemy Prince Callum, Sasha responds the way any red-blooded American teenage girl would when faced with a similar situation. In the meantime, Princess Juliana (who really shouldn't exist in any world as a princess) is determined to abandon her people to the horrors of war rather than become the sacrificial bride to bring peace and harmony to her land. She's willing to do anything to keep from meeting her fate ...even if it involves sacrificing the life of another. Teen romance does abound in the pages for more than a few characters. The love triangle was a tricky one for me. For once, I found myself completely indecisive on who should become THE couple. The author spun the love story in such a way as to almost let you feel the emotions of the parties involved and thus show how hard it can be sometimes to realize whom your heart truly loves. The love triangle will keep you reading through the most sludgy part of the book. Stick with it, though, when you want to put the book down halfway through. You really want to keep reading until the very end. Trust me, it is entirely worth it. I will warn you that the book ends on a cliffhanger that had me screaming "NNOOOOO!!!!!!!!!" so if you hate waiting to know what happens next, I suggest you hold off reading this first book until after the second .... and maybe third ... comes out. So why three stars? With a really strong, excellent beginning and a fantastic end I would rate it five stars easy ... but that slow excruciating middle takes two stars away.

By Will T This book absolutely hits home with the intended demographic. My inner child was thrilled with the adventure that the main characters embark on. Strickland does a wonderful job creating the various scenarios the characters find themselves in. The descriptions of the knights' environments displays the influence of previous legendary writers that have clearly had influence on the author. The story seems meant to spark the imaginations of high school-aged kids. In that regard, it hits the nail on the head. It's also a wonderfully refreshing take on the zombie genre. Knights vs. the undead. I'll take it.

If you love Mideaval times and the zombie apocalypse you will love this tale of the three young Knights Banion,Edward, and Sean as they fight against the undead plague in their homeland of Ireland.

By Cali Mel This is book two of the Dragons of Eternity series. The mystery which began in Book 1 "Accidental Wings of Dragons" continues.Who is targeting dragons for murder? How far up the chain of command does the conspiracy go? Trusted Elite member, Alex, continues the investigation into the murdered dragons. When he wakes up in a beautiful stranger's farmhouse with no memory of who he is or how he got there, Alex knows he's in trouble, especially when it comes to his intriguing hostess, Terra. As for Terra, she knew her life was about to change from the moment she saw that dragon crash land in her corn field. When the unconscious, naked dragon-man turned out to be a hunky man of integrity, she was a goner. Hilarious dragon-brooding, evil henchmen, a rich mystery, and great banter between characters all combine to make one heck of a novel!NOTE on my four star rating: Let me clarify, I really, really love this book. The entire series. I dropped a star purely because of the sexual content of the book, and book 1 as well. I get that the point behind the sexual chemistry is dragon instinct (which becomes quite a funny thing), I do not enjoy reading such descriptive, intense lust. It's a take away for me. Don't get me wrong; I love chemistry between characters as much as the next reader, just not so graphic. Makes me feel like I'm reading x-rated material and I'd be embarrassed for someone to read over my shoulder. However, I do keep reading Julie's books because I am pretty good at skimming what I don't want to read. And so I continue with this series because I enjoy the story, the humor, the mystery, and the characters.Julie Wetzel does a great job of bringing a story to life, with this fun, new twist on dragons in the modern world. I am can't wait for the book three!

By Ethan@ OneGuysGuideToGoodReads Full review and more available at: http://oneguysguidetogoodreads.blogspot.com/2015/09/for-memory-of-dragons-dragons-of.html*****My Thoughts:Earlier this summer, I threw my hat into the ring with 'I am not a fan of dragons'. Julie Wetzel introduced me to Accidental Wings and I thought 'Okay fine, maybe she made me like them once, but it won't happen again'. A few months later, Wetzel hit me with Castle and I thought 'surely it won't happen again', yet for a second time, her dragons blew me away. When Julie handed me the chance to try her dragons for a third time, I didn't even hesitate to jump at the chance. Julie Wetzel has changed my bookish ways, maybe I actually am a dragon person?!It isn't often I love every novel in a series, but each time Wetzel puts pen to paper, my bookish heart soars with delight. For the Memory of Dragons most definitely did not disappoint! In true One Guy's Guide to Good Reads fashion, I'd like to get my negative thoughts out of the way first. I only have one, thankfully. When it comes to a great read, I love losing myself within the pages of a story, escaping the realities of life for a while. While Wetzel is more than able to satisfy in that department, I will admit that this novel was far shorter than I would have liked. Clocking in at just shy of 130 pages, I knocked this out very quickly. With novels of this genre, I have always come to expect a much greater length. Wetzel tells a full, thrilling story within these pages, but I will admit I would have loved to see a much longer story in this world. While every story in this series is a shorter, quicker read, I still thoroughly enjoy and consider them each to be amazing. This is just something that I, personally, would like to see changed in future installments. Now enough of that, let's rave! While I've loved every installment of this series thus far, Alex and Terra's story may be my favorite yet! When a dragon crash lands in the field behind her farmhouse, Terra's life is changed in more ways than one. From mythical beast to naked man, Terra must take this confused stranger under her wing to keep him safe. But from what? When Alex awakes with no memory, he must piece the clues together to save himself and the rest of the his people from harm.Full of action, quick wit, and a few steamy scenes, Wetzel packs a punch with this quick read. Every page was jam packed with fun and excitement, with more twists and turns than you'd ever expect. Crafted carefully with new settings, new characters, and new insight to the mythical world of dragons, Memory really stands out in the crowd. With cameo appearances from some of our former characters, Wetzel ties in this third installment perfectly within her world. While Alex's character is, admittedly, much like other dragons we've read about, I believe it was Terra who really stood out in this novel. She's intelligent, strong willed, and street-savvy. Her character development, and surprise ending, really rooted the story with a great amount of emotion and reality that I was really glad to see.The setting and world that Wetzel has crafted with this series is incredible. From ancient times to modern day, the world of Dragons and their human shifters is definitely unique and memorable. Much like other worlds with their feet in our realm, Wetzel has done a perfect job of altering the fabric of reality to let the fantasy stream through into our own world. With specifics and magic that aren't bogged down with rules, history, or cultures, Wetzel is able to better tell her story and make it enjoyable to even the most casual of readers. A true testament to the talent of her writing, Wetzel has far surpassed my expectations for the genre! With the next novel in this series (titled For the Heart of Dragons) slated for release right around the corner, I have no doubt that Wetzel will continue to exceed my every expectation and confirm my beliefs that my views on high fantasy are changing. Let that be a lesson to all hesitant readers: one great series can, indeed, make a difference! With all of this being said, it should come as absolutely no surprise that I am granting For the Memory of Dragons a well-deserved 5-star review! Julie Wetzel has yet to disappoint me, and I can't wait to see what comes next. I highly recommend this read to all lovers of high fantasy, paranormal, and romance novels, though be advised of the novels adult content, violence, and language. Don't miss out, add this to your TBR today!*****

Sexual Tension, Humor, Mystery, and Brooding Dragons Make for a Great Read By Chris When I first picked up this book, I didn’t know much about the author or the story. It was a fantasy, mystery, and romance; those elements were enough to intrigue me. The fact that there were dragons (one of my favorite fantasy creatures) was an added benefit. The novel is a sequel to On the Wings of Accidental Dragons, but I did not need to read the prior novel to enjoy this one. Wetzel has created a world where dragons and humans co-exist, although very few humans actually have interactions with dragons on a daily basis. They are more likely to be seen in news reports than in person. Wetzel has thought through the dragon culture and the interaction with human society to great effect. The book would be fun to read even just for that aspect. But the reader gets a great deal more than just a world inhabited by dragons. The story is told between the shifting perspectives of Alex, the dragon who has lost his memory, and Terra, the woman who rescues him after he crash lands on her farm. Their developing relationship drives the story forward, and the mystery that they need to solve amps up the crisis factor. These two elements combined make this an enjoyable read. There is a lot of sexual tension in this book as well as humor and brooding dragons. There are some really exciting twists and some gripping issues about identity are explored. Particularly readers get some indication of what it means to be both human and dragon. The interior relationship is complex and fascinating to explore; when you stir sexual attraction and a potential mate into the mix, it becomes even more gripping.I would advise picking up this novel when you have time to read—you will not want to put it down until you’ve finished the story.Disclaimer: I received this book in exchange for a fair and timely review.

Will & Tom is a glimpse into the life of the infamous artist JMW Turner as a young man during a week spent at Harewood House fighting for a commission against his childhood friend and rival Tom Girtin.

1797, West Yorkshire.

When rising artist Will Turner arrives at Harewood House in high summer, his intention is to sketch the house and grounds, receive his commission and return to London, where he has started attracting serious attention at the Royal Academy.

But things at the grand house are not quite as he expects. The atmosphere is strange, both above and below stairs, and Will’s treatment by his hosts is surprisingly offhand. Most perplexing of all, however, is the appearance of another painter – his childhood friend and now rival, Tom Girtin. While Tom is welcomed into the aristocratic circle, Will finds few allies. As it becomes harder to ignore the whispers of scandal , Will witnesses something that will threaten both his commission and his friendship.

Alive with intrigue, artistic rivalry, Will & Tom offers a glimpse into the early life of Britain’s greatest painter, J M W Turner, through the story of a complicated, vibrant friendship, and how it is tested by the dark dynamic of art and power.

The fall of 1864 finds Mosby’s Rangers in a violent clash with Sheridan’s Cavalry in the Shenandoah Valley… The nature of the fighting between the Confederacy and the Union has changed drastically from a once “gentlemanly conflict” to an all-out war of brutal treachery. Measured in terms of human life, the costly battles, lightning-quick raids, and secret missions effect the beginning of the end of the War Between the States, as President Lincoln finally finds a commander in Ulysses S. Grant who will fight Robert E. Lee without mercy. Homecoming at her family’s estate is nothing like what Salina Rose Hastings Barnes had ever imagined it could be. She returns to her native Virginia as a young wife and expectant mother, only to find that the place she holds so dear has been razed by order of Yankee major John Barnes. Corrupted by a festering decades-old vendetta, Barnes has sworn to annihilate not only the entire Hastings family, but also Salina’s husband, Captain Jeremy Barnes. The love Jeremy and Salina have for each other, combined with their faith in the Almighty, supplies them with the strength needed to endure trials that imperil their very lives. Unable to participate as actively as she once did in the Remnant, a civilian spy ring organized by her late father, Salina limits her war effort to nursing in a Richmond hospital and knitting socks for Southern soldiers. As belief in the Cause crumbles and notions of glorious victory elude the struggling Confederacy, Salina dreams of life with Jeremy beyond the war, and hopes to solve a painful mystery by discovering the identity of Jeremy’s true father. When all is said and done, Jeremy and Salina can testify that all things work together for God’s people, and that He alone is worthy of the glory and honor for the great things He has done. STRENGTH AND GLORY depicts the joys and woes of the Hastings family and their struggle to overcome the upheaval induced by America’s Civil War. Irrevocably changed, they all must come to terms with applying the lessons history has imposed upon them.

I was touched so many times following the story of Jeremy and Salina - through their trials, tribulations, and triumphs in war, life, and family. Ms. Renich has a great way with words. So many times I laughed, cried, and felt as if I was right there with them. I could see and feel all that they were. I even learned more about America's Civil War. Ms. Renich has saved her best for last in this series but I'm hoping that she will write more in the future.

It was more than I expected it to be. Like the first three books, I wasn't able to put this book down for more than a minute without my curiousity peaking of what was gonna happen next. I have to admit that I'm sad to think that it came to an end. I felt like I was actually in the story. It touched my heart tremendously. I think I'll be reading the series over and over. Thanks T. Elizabeth Renich for allowing me the chance to read these books.

There was an unnecessary death, which causes the mental breakdown of another person in the cast. I could have seen a way to make a happier ending even with the death. Overall not happy with the ending of this series.
