By Michael Fowler Just read " Secret Stairs and Hidden Lair"..all in one day. The entire book! I couldn't put it down. I just read so well. The boys met for the first time, so this story happens before "Beaver Gnaw"at the beginning. Jim, Joe and John are into adventures in the woods again and wind up exploring an abandoned, supposedly empty mill, but it's not....it's haunted and occupied, not sure in which order of importance to put those, and mayhem follows.A new friend helps them learn about bravery, and they manage to get out of a potentially life ending situation using their wits. Score one for the good guys! The book is a true delight. Even the antagonists are characters you can't help but laugh at. Itchy and Cortez, just had the misfortune of picking the wrong mill to try to hide out in.At the book's end, the boys return to their favorite gathering place, a sawdust pile, none the worse for the wear and decide there are more adventures to come. Not the least of which is....SCHOOL, another book coming soon, Yay!!!!

Sometimes it is the smallest of peoples that bring about the greatest changes. The ten year old white sorceress Irina Casteel came to class at the dragon castle Uulamakk expecting another boring day. She had no idea she would be shaping destiny. Through a simple act of compassion she would change the paths of three worlds. Her sympathy for a dying fairy would lead to the creation of the three Crystals of Destiny. With the help of her dragon mentor, Queen Ryoma Tanis, she would grow to be a wise and powerful white sorceress. A woman of conviction and courage. Irina would wear two of the crystals around her neck for over two thousand years. Until the day she would give the crystals to their true owners, her daughters Torva and Eriana. King Darius, the fairy king, would keep one crystal to someday give to his granddaughter Middy. In Irina's hands the crystals held no power. In Middy and her daughter's hands, the crystals would become one of the greatest powers in the universe. The Crystals of Destiny would one day be the only hope to defeat the dark god Kaygun. He was an evil sorcerer that was seduced by the dark power of the Erebus. After he murdered the goddess Thanatos he took her planet and became a true god. The mother goddess Tekarra had created the crystals through King Darius so Torva, Eriana and Middy could stand against Kaygun. Before this can happen Irina must help change the mortals of Avangar. She must guide them down Fate and Tekarra's chosen path. Only she can lead the mortals away from the Erebus and guide them to the Divine Light of the Inaara. With her help the dragons will finally find worthy allies in the human world. When they stand together... victory is within their grasp.

How is this book unique?

Formatted for E-Readers, Unabridged & Original version. You will find it much more comfortable to read on your device/app. Easy on your eyes. Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc, by the Sieur Louis de Conte is an 1896 novel by Mark Twain that recounts the life of Joan of Arc. It is Twain's last completed novel, published when he was 61 years old. The novel is presented as a translation (by "Jean Francois Alden") of memoirs by Louis de Conte, a fictionalized version of Joan of Arc's page, Louis de Contes. The novel is divided into 3 sections according to Joan of Arc's development: a youth in Domrémy, a commander of the army of Charles VII of France, and a defendant at trial in Rouen. Originally, the novel was published as a serialization in Harper's Magazine beginning in April 1895. Twain, aware of his reputation as a comic, asked that each installment appear anonymously so that readers will treat the piece seriously. Regardless, his authorship soon became known, and the book edition published by Harper and Brothers in May 1896 credited Mark Twain.

From the Back Cover Twin's serious, impassioned, meticulously researched story about a compelling heroine, the Maid of Orleans. This is Twain's celebration of the ideal woman: gentle, selfless, and pure, but also brave, courageous, and eloquent.

About the Author Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was an American humorist and writer, who is best known for his enduring novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which has been called the Great American Novel. Raised in Hannibal, Missouri, Twain held a variety of jobs including typesetter, riverboat pilot, and miner before achieving nationwide attention for his work as a journalist with The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. He earned critical and popular praise for his wit and enjoyed a successful career as a public speaker in addition to his writing. Twain s works were remarkable for his ability to capture colloquial speech, although his adherence to the vernacular of the time has resulted in the suppression of his works by schools in modern times. Twain s birth in 1835 coincided with a visit by Halley s Comet, and Twain predicted, accurately, that he would go out with it as well, dying the day following the comet s return in 1910.

The true story of Joan of Arc is told from the point of view of a close friend. You are with her throughout her whole life, from her humble beginnings, her miraculous entry into French politics and rise to leadership of the army to her capture, trial and martyrdom. It is amazing how much she was able to achieve in such a short time. How she was abandoned and betrayed by the King she saved and raised to the throne is very poignantly presented to the reader. Well worth reading.

No editing; frustrating to read By michele I ordered both the volume I and II of "Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc" by Mark Twain through my Amazon Prime account. They were both atrociously edited with many typographical errors. Was there no one to read it before it was printed and bound for sale? The first volume was especially difficult to read since it was in courier font and had page breaks that were non-sensical. This was ironic since the volume cover said "High Quality Paperback" and it was, to say the least, not. (Filiquarian Publishing LLC/Qontro).The second volume, although it was a smaller, hardback edition, also had too many typos to count (one every second page or so). Which made for a very distracted reader. (Bibliobazaar, LLC)ALSO - if there are two volumes in a series like this - it would be helpful for Amazon to list that BOTH are required (that is, if you order volume 1 - that there is one more - volume 2 - required to complete the series. Maybe listing them together on your website? Or somehow connecting them on your website when searching for this title. Thanks for letting me vent my frustration. It was a required reading for a book club - otherwise I would have chucked them in the trash early on in the reading!

Some fiction is inspirational also, yet, I love being able to say, "Wow, that really did happen."This book is SO encouraging for me, a believer in the most-high God, the Father, and His Son Jesus. I know there is no other way that Joan of Arc could have performed and accomplished those historical feats. And that was only 550+ years ago- much sooner ago than Biblical history. Her attitude and behavior are absolutely beautifully inspired by God as a human can be. I appreciate her humanity, which reminds me that I could be so inspired as God leads. I appreciate her humility and meekness, as I aspire to be also.I love the contrast of the pride in volume one of the character Paladin.I'm still reading this book a little each night at my bedboard. To me, her story is an outward manifestation of an inward truth of the spiritual battles we fight every day of our own adversity and the temptations to be less than loving and honourable. And most especially is the encouragement of the times we are living in of the current world empire. Even though I may not like the choices of attitudes and behavior of others, I realize that God has a purpose and plan for each person, city, and country on the planet. I can learn to remain calm and peaceful in spite of the turmoil, knowing that God truly is in control and can guide people's choices very well without forcing anyone to do anything. This was so well depicted in the chapter when the deer was scared out of the bushes into the British garrison, causing the men to cry out for joy of fresh meat, and allowing Joan's army to know their hidden location. Simple things like that, as God knows how people will respond and allows others to act out their desires to get the desired results. Kind of like directing the flow of a river, not by actually controlling the water directly, but allowing dams to be built by others, forcing the water in another direction naturally. -Just like the verse Proverbs 21:1 "The king's heart in the hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water: He turns it whithersoever He will."I just finished reading about Joan finishing her battles, crowning the king of France. I know I will continue to be inspired by her courage of knowing that she would have a dreadful end, yet be miraculously strengthened by God to endure it. That gives me so much hope when I fear what more may happen to us in this life before the nearing end. A most timely encouragement for all!

Lola Starke is a PI with a trust fund. Not that she gets everything she wants—or doesn't want. Like being rid of her Ghost, Aubrey O'Connell, for instance. But in Crescent City, Ghosts are commonplace and Hosts are supposed to be happy about it. So Lola's learned to bide her time. It's served her well as a gwai girl raised in a Chinese city. When two disparate clients won't take 'no' for an answer, Lola reluctantly agrees to both. She and Aubrey are quickly entangled in a murky puzzle of government officials, drug addicts, angry cops, and the gossamer threads of a dangerous plot. Soon enough, the past comes calling with bad news and worse enemies. This is the '30s and this is Crescent City, where mah-jongg parlours and film studios hold sway. Where the City's highest official is a Ghost with unimpeachable power and a history with Lola's mother. Where secrets last only as long as it takes money to change hands—or a gun to pry them loose. How is this book unique?

Formatted for E-Readers, Unabridged & Original version. You will find it much more comfortable to read on your device/app. Easy on your eyes. Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography Grimm's fairy tales was first published in 1812 by the Grimm brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm. The collection is commonly known in English as Grimm's Fairy Tales. The influence of these books was widespread. W. H. Auden praised the collection, during World War II, as one of the founding works of Western culture. The tales themselves have been put to many uses. Hitler praised them as folkish tales showing children with sound racial instincts seeking racially pure marriage partners, and so strongly that the Allied forces warned against them; for instance, Cinderella with the heroine as racially pure, the stepmother as an alien, and the prince with an unspoiled instinct being able to distinguish. Writers who have written about the Holocaust have combined the tales with their memoirs, as Jane Yolen in her Briar Rose. The work of the Brothers Grimm influenced other collectors, both inspiring them to collect tales and leading them to similarly believe, in a spirit of romantic nationalism, that the fairy tales of a country were particularly representative of it, to the neglect of cross-cultural influence. Among those influenced were the Russian Alexander Afanasyev, the Norwegians Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe, the English Joseph Jacobs, and Jeremiah Curtin, an American who collected Irish tales. There was not always a pleased reaction to their collection. Joseph Jacobs was in part inspired by his complaint that English children did not read English fairy tales; in his own words, "What Perrault began, the Grimms completed".Three individual works of Wilhelm Grimm include Altdänische Heldenlieder, Balladen und Märchen ('Old Danish Heroic Songs, Ballads, and Folktales') in 1811, Über deutsche Runen ('On German Runes') in 1821, and Die deutsche Heldensage ('The German Heroic Saga') in 1829.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An excellent read By James Bookreader This story is set in A.D.515 in a place called Angeln, which is now part of modern Denmark.Leofric is out hunting with his friend Chlodochar when they discover a woman's body in the woods. The woman, Ebba, has been stabbed, but who is the murderer? Suspicion immediately falls upon Wystan, the blacksmith from a nearby camp of wayfarers, families who are on their way to the new lands in Britain.Eadwig, Leofric's uncle, and Gladewine, elder of the camp, decide to hold a trial. Eight immediate suspects are counted with Gladewine, who is unable to offer an alibi, making up the ninth. It seems that most of the wayfarers suspect Wystan the blacksmith, as he is a stranger to them, and Eadwig is also keen to find him guilty, for reasons of his own.Unsure of Wystan's guilt, Leofric thinks up a way to discover the truth. But will his plan work?Leofric is an intriguing character. He is a man of principle, unwilling to see an innocent man be condemned. Although young, he is a natural leader, not afraid to stand up to his elders and speak out. A likeable character, with sympathy for the murdered woman, Leofric is determined to discover the true murderer and plans a way to discover what really happened. But will his plan work? While I would not normally read books in this genre, I'm pleased I picked this one. The author has created a fascinating world, painting a vivid picture of the wayfarer's camp and it's inhabitants.. The plot line is well developed, intriguing and unpredictable and kept me guessing until the end. There is humour here too, as the wayfarers joke amongst themselves, as they watch the trial. The characters are everyday people, easy for the reader to identify with.An excellent read. Highly recommended.

Australia's most beloved children's author returns.

Like many of his mates from the bush, Frank Ballantyne is keen to join the grand adventure and do his bit. Specially as a chest full of medals might impress the currently unimpressed parents of his childhood sweetheart. So Frank ups his age and volunteers with his horse Daisy...and his dad.

In the deserts of Egypt and Palestine he experiences all the adventure he ever wanted, and a few things he wasn't expecting. Heartbreak, love and the chance to make the most important choice of his life.

From Gallipoli to the famous charge at Beersheba, through to the end of the war and its unforgettable aftermath, Frank's story grows out of some key moments in Australia's history.

They were loyal creatures, the men and horses of the Australian Light Horse, but war doesn't always pay heed to loyalty. This is the powerful story of a young man's journey towards his own kind of bravery.

Review Tender and terrible; beautiful, brave and brutal, Morris Gleitzman has written a most remarkable story of men and horses in war, uncompromising and unflinching in its portrayal of the agonies of the First World War for men and horses alike. Sparely and supremely well written, this is quite simply one of very best novels I have read. MICHAEL MORPURGO. Michael Morpurgo

Illustrating man’s capacity for kindness alongside the senselessness of war and violence By Alpha Reader During WWI nearly 150,000 horses were transported from Australia and conscripted to the army – majority of their owners joined the Lighthorsemen, and were sent to the Middle Eastern theatre. When the war ended in 1918 some of the 150,000 horses had survived. But only one would be sent home.‘Loyal Creatures’ is the new novel from children’s author Morris Gleitzman.I am a huge fan of the famous Australian author, but even this book surpassed my expectations and is most certainly a favourite of 2014. Even more so since last week I had the absolute pleasure of attending a performance of the book’s first incarnation – as a stage play – in an event hosted by Penguin Teacher’s Academy and the Centre for Youth Literature at the State Library. Actor Paul-William Mawhinney was the protagonist in the powerful one-person show of ‘Loyal Creatures’, playing 16-year-old Frank Ballantyne – and the performance added new dimensions to the book for me and wrung new emotions from the page.In 2012, the National Theatre of London was preparing to bring the stage production ‘War Horse’ to Australia. To bring an Australian perspective to the play, adapted from Michael Morpurgo's 1982 children's novel of the same name, they approached renowned Australian children’s author Morris Gleitzman. In 2005 Gleitzman had released the first children’s book in a four-part series called ‘Once’, set in 1942 about a Jewish boy called Felix who is searching for his lost parents. The final book ‘After’ was released in 2o11, and was the end to an emotionally draining, heartbreaking but daring series that explored the Holocaust in a most important way for children – and Michael Morpurgo obviously knew Gleitzman was in a good position to tell a new war story, also for children. Thus ‘Loyal Creatures’ the stage play was written.Available from Penguin Teachers is the entire script of the ‘Loyal Creatures’ play, which includes a brief note from the author explaining why he then wanted to adapt it into a novel; “Writing the novel gave me the opportunity to further develop Frank and Daisy’s story, add extra characters and include incidents and details that there hadn’t been room for in the play.”I am so grateful that Gleitzman decided to create play and novel. Both are remarkable in their own right – emotionally wrenching and telling an aspect of WWI history that is almost entirely unknown. Indeed, Morris Gleitzman only stumbled across the information about 150,000 horses sent to war, and the one coming back, during his research. And I can understand why so little is known about this aspect of the war – it reveals the army’s bureaucratic cruelty and goes against the most celebrated ANZAC legend. It instead is a subversive story about the cruelty of man and the sheer pointlessness of war … while also celebrating humankind’s connection to the animal kingdom, and perhaps what that reveals in our own capacity for kindness (when we allow it).‘Loyal Creatures’ is the story of Frank and his father who both sign up for the war and bring their horses – Jimmy and Daisy – with them. But neither can anticipate that a war which is meant to be over by Christmas will see 416,809 men enlisted, of which over 60,000 will be killed and 156,000 wounded, gassed, or taken prisoner. But it’s the story of Frank and Daisy that dominates, as both man and beast navigate this God forsaken war the best they can. Far from home, Daisy is a constant and welcome reminder of home, of what Frank is fighting to return back to – they become true comrades, and in the play Frank is governed by his father’s words of wisdom: "If a horse does the right thing by you, he reckoned, you do the right thing by them."‘Loyal Creatures’, the novel and the play are truly remarkable texts. Based on a true, saddening story, Gleitzman imbues this long forgotten historical factoid with warmth and humour, madness and human weakness. He will make you look at war differently, critically, not least by illustrating man’s capacity for kindness alongside the senselessness of war and violence.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. funny, quirky By Wen I'm a big Morris Gleitzman fan. His stories are so endearing, funny, quirky, heartfelt...and sometimes heartbreaking. This was definitely a heartbreaker. Despite the tears, I don't regret nothing. As he says in his note at the end, this isn't a history book, although it's about history, and I learned a great deal. I'm also inspired to go and learn more about the Light Horsemen of World War 1. Thank you, Mr. Gleitzman, for another gem in my collection of your wonderful books.

Isabel of Castile was only 23 years old when in 1474 she inherited the Kingdom of Castile from her impotent half brother Enrique, who left her with a land in chaos. Robbers on the roads made travel impossible, footpads roaming the streets made everyday life a dangerous adventure. Nobles fought wars among themselves for control of land and the country exploded into civil war shortly after her coronation. Over the next thirty years by adeptly using the skills of a politician, diplomat, and warrior Isabel forged an alliance with Aragon and created a new country, Spain, that within a half century of her death became the greatest power Europe had ever seen. This novel which departs very little from fact opens a window into the mind and heart of the most ingenious women who ever walked across the pages of European history.

I might be biased because Isabel de Castilla is my favorite monarch, but reading this novel had me hooked from cover to cover twice. The author does a fantastic job of retelling history in the most beautiful way possible; by putting us in the front row of her life - everything from her romances to her grievances and even petty annoyances (that are absolutely justified given the circumstances of her life) are touched in this novel.Keeping in mind that this novel has enough credible sources to explain the important details, it is one that I look forward to using when I teach my own history lessons. It's an easy enough read to attract multiple demographics and simultaneously and an elaborate enough one to leave you in awe that this was actually someones life. . .There are a few teeny editorial errors sprinkled throughout - but it's not enough at all to take away from the flow or feel of the story.

He swaggers to keep up his spirits waiting for battle, but when suddenly thrust into the slaughter, he is overcome with blind fear and runs from the field of battle.

In a confused struggle with his own army's retreating soldiers, he is wounded but not by enemy gunfire. 117 of 122 people found the following review helpful. Great Story, Good Kindle Edition By Robert Brooks Unlike many others I was never required to read "The Red Badge of Courage" in High School. When I saw that it was among the many other classics that are now available for free on the Kindle I happily took the opportunity to read it; I am glad that I did. There are plenty of reviews of the novel itself on the print version, so first a note about the Kindle Edition of this book: I found no typos or poor formatting of the text throughout the Kindle Edition, which is a nice change from many of the other free classics. The only problem with this edition is that the table of contents does not work. It looks as if it should, but it is apparently just a large image within the text file, instead of clickable links to the relevant sections of the book. This is not a big deal, but it is always nice to have a working table of contents for reference. As for the story: The Red Badge of Courage tells the story of Henry, often referred to as the "Youth," and his transformation over the course of a few days. Considering the author never fought in a war, his reflections on the the way battles can change a person are truly insightful, and at times even breath-taking. Stephen Crane also had a talent for describing the world around Henry allowing the reader to feel as if they are in the novel. The book is quite short, but Crane does a great job developing Henry's character. As Henry goes from scared, to terrified, to arrogant, and eventually humble, you find yourself actively liking and disliking Henry through his transformation, as if you were there. There are two particular literary devices Crane uses that I particularly enjoyed and make the novel poetic at times. First, almost all of the characters have both a name and them also a character description. For example, Henry is "the Youth," he has a friend "the loud youngster" and so on for all the main characters. This reinforces the idea that this is not just a book about a particular person or group of people, but about people in general. The second device is the way Crane uses common themes. So, the word red is used an adjective of the novel, just as it is in the title. Or, another example, Henry is walking through the woods that remind him of a chapel: from that moment there is a chorus, steeple, etc., used as adjectives and metaphors for the next few pages. This is truly poetic.I am grateful that there are teams of volunteers that put this material together and release it for free for the Kindle. The Red Badge of Courage was a quick and entertaining read: if, like me, you did not have the chance to read it when you were younger I would certainly recommend it.

Not a kids' book By Amazon Customer As a British reader, I just recently read and reviewed this book over on Amazon.co.uk, and I thought I'd have a look at the US reviews for comparison - and immediately realised that this is obviously a "set book" in US schools. I can see the logic - the book is about a young person, it's short and (superficially) exciting, with lots of action, and it has some good moral/ethical themes ripe for class discussion.Nonetheless, I was not surprised to see a number of negative reviews from kids. I don't think I would have appreciated it as a 13 (or whatever) year old. The writing style (deliberately) reflects the state of mind of the protagonist - confused. This in NOT an "adventure" story, it's a blood-and-guts account of a dirty day in a dirty war. As such, it reminded me very much of some of the recent first-hand accounts of infantrymen in WWII, Korea, Vietnam or even Iraq. It's about the way the mind can obsess on tiny details in the middle of chaos - how sights, smells and sounds become almost hallucinogenic as the mind approaches breaking point. As such, it is astonishing. But if you want a REAL adventure story (not suitable for the under-13s!) read a biography of Crane himself. Hemingway meets James Dean is the only way to describe it.

Allison (dallison@biochem.med.ufl.edu) When I was in high school several years ago, this was one of the books required in one of my English classes. And, upon going through the many reviews below, I find that it is still a required book for today's students. But, several appear to find Crane's novel "boring," "difficult to read," and nothing that they can "relate to." I heard many of the same things in the early 1960s. But, then I found myself in an environment not too dissimilar of the main character of the novel. It suddenly became relevent and real. Crane's depiction of war and the thoughts of young men at war, both willing and unwilling, will always be relevant. This novel is the psychological study of a young soldier and his first encounters with the brutality seen in battle (many critics have regarded this book as the first modern war novel). The unnamed battle in the novel is probably Chancellorsville (1863). The young infantryman, Henry Fielding, faces his first battle wanting to prove himself a hero. However, when the battle is actually thrust upon him, he is overcome by fear and he runs. He joins the wounded but he has not won their "red badge of courage." He sees his friend Jim Conklin killed and he becomes enraged, particularly at the injustice of war. (I remember noting the significance of the initials J. C. for the soldier's friend; but, I later discovered that this observation was not original. The novel is filled with imagery. For example, even the horsemen of the apocalypse make an appearance.) This is a great novel and I hope it remains on reading lists for years to come.

“I cannot find my way alone,” Serefina said softly. His arms came around her, his hands landing in the middle of her back, and he pulled her to him. She leaned there, her cheek on his shoulder, his strength solid beneath her hands. Her eyes burned with tears she refused to shed, the corners dampening, and deep within her heart a tiny speck of hope glowed. For once, she didn’t toss it aside, but fearful, clung with all her might. ----- Penniless and alone, Serefina Aguilar has nowhere to go but south to an unknown uncle her recently deceased aunt only ever spoke unkindly about. It seems the downward spiral of her life really is the spiritual test she’s been told. But, as long as she covers her greatest sin, the flaming red locks on her head, she can keep herself pure and make it to heaven. She hopes. Except a horrible encounter with a bank robber and a handsome man named Matthew Todd seem destined to send her to hell … and worse, take along with her what might be her only chance at love. After being brought up by an aunt the took the Bible and twisted it to fit her own despair, Serefina is shown that God is love and that God loves her as she was made. Matthew still has not gotten over the fact that Virgil married what he thought would be his life mate. Thrown together by quirky circumstances and a bank robber, Serefina and Matthew find each other and forgiveness for the past and hope for the future. A comfortable, enjoyable read. I hope there are more to come in this series. I was given a copy of this book for my honest review.

I loved reading about the characters from book 1 again and seeing how their life is progressing while being utterly wrapped up in Serefina and Matthew Todd's whirlwind courtship. Matthew's quiet assurance of faith override the remembered chastening words that haunt Serefina since childhood from her bitter aunt. Serefina, the aunt long dead now, travels to her uncle's home only to be swept up in a bank robber's whims that effect the rest of the story of her life. She learns to love, overcome harsh obstacles, and trust God. Loved this book. Bravo to the author.

From the Supernatural Case Files of Sherlock Holmes:

Many of Holmes's more fantastic cases have yet to see publication, since their grotesque and outré nature would have stretched the reader's sensibilities beyond any normal boundaries. They are, in a word, unbelievable, and I have held these cases in abeyance at Holmes' request to protect both his reputation and my own small credibility as narrator.

But the time has come to reveal them, per Holmes's instructions. I follow these instructions faithfully and humbly, and let my readers judge if we have done wrong to withhold them for as long as we did.

- John H. Watson, M.D.

Holmes and Watson encounter sinister dealings with an American ship from the town of Innsmouth comes to England in pursuit of an implacable revenge.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Another great tale By JVib Again, as with "The Adventure of the Solitary Grave", I am very pleased with this short story. It was well written in the style of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, with a supernatural twist. I haven't read much by H.P. Lovecraft so I can't speak for the style or the content in that regard. What I can tell you is the story is worth reading if you are a fan of the original Sherlock Holmes tales. I am very impressed with Mr. Klaver's writing and am hoping to see more Sherlock Holmes adventures from him. Thank you Mr. Klaver for another great tale.

By W Edgars Although I really like the first story in this series, I didn't have high hopes of this mash-up coming out very well, since the Lovecraft stories have a much different flavor and wildly more pessimistic themes, but the author really pulled this off. It's a darker story, like the Five Orange Pips, but fits both mythos shockingly well. Also the distinctive personalities of Holmes and Watson really shine here. Highly recommend!

All the characters still feel right, with some hidden depths that made it a really great read. Die-hard Holmes and Watson fans will love this one, too! I hope we see a lot more these! Write, Klaver, write!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. good storytelling By SteveH Wonderful story from first time author RJ Hinkemeyer. The author successfully captures the dynamic of small town/church politics in a compelling mystery. Look forward to more great stories from this author!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great read! By K H H I love the time setting and feel of this book. Set in Minnesota in the 1970's before sophisticated forensics you find Sheriff Jake with a murder to solve. The author's prologue alludes to a relationship that stretches years back - is it pertinent to the solution? The crime starts the book and the author deftly develops the characters of a small rural community while detailing the investigation. The Sheriff is hard pressed to solve the murder of a young nun while dealing with a cast of characters including family, friends, neighbors, bureaucrats and the Church. The author has developed an intriguing plot and a well structured novel. Jake who is in his 50's is a war veteran and has been a Sheriff for years does know the folly of human nature. The author's narrative skill makes this story and the human folly involved come alive. This is definitely a book to read and enjoy.
