Nowhere to Hide, by Sigmund Brouwer

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—William Lyon Mackenzie King lives on McNeil Island, a quiet, isolated location housing a federal prison and its employees, across the waters from the southern end of Puget Sound. Blake and MJ, King's closest friends and computer whiz kids, are off the island for a few days, taking a break to work with CIA agent Evans. To King's surprise, at Evans's request, his father, Mack, arranges for him to meet with Blake and MJ, which leads to a growing panic of insecurity, considering the treacherous moments he endured involving Evans one month before. To further his surprise, it is not Evans who flies in on the helicopter to retrieve him but Don Mundie, CIA, who instantly arouses King's suspicions by calling him William. Upon their arrival at the hotel, Blake is clueless as to Mundie's identity, so King knows what he has to do. Together the three boys overpower Mundie, make a run for it, and run straight into Evans at the door. Mundie attempts to convince the boys that Evans is conning them but the boys place their faith in Evans and exit with him. King and his friends must make a choice, and the choice leaves them nowhere to hide. This fast-paced thriller full of unexpected twists, addressing deception, identity struggle, and inner peace, deserves its place on the shelf. VERDICT For fans of plot-driven conspiracy-theory fiction.—Susan Harris, Ridgeway High School, TN

"Nowhere to Hide" is a fantastic follow-up to the first book starring teens King, MJ, and Blake, Dead Man's Switch, and has the same non-stop action as the first book. I was riveted to my seat as I was drawn back into their world and into the middle of a conspiracy where nothing is as it seems. The characters are expertly developed, and readers will find themselves cheering on the 3 teens as they race to discover exactly what is going on. Something I really appreciated about this novel especially is that King has some serious challenges to overcome, and he shows that we don't have to pretend to be perfect (and in fact that doing so can actually only make things worse!) I also like the special bond King has with his parents, and think that if more parents had the openness King ends up having with his mom and dad that there would be a lot less problems in this world. I encourage parents to read this book along with their teenagers, because not only will they be completely entertained, but they will have the opportunity to talk about when it is okay to lie or not lie. The author even brings up some examples from the Bible that fit well into the story and can also lead to some further discussion. Both teens and adults who love an action-packed plot with tons of twist and turns should plan on adding "Nowhere to Hide" to their collection. Not only will they find themselves immersed in a well-told story, but they will appreciate how this novel celebrates family, faith, and friendships."Nowhere to Hide" is young adult fiction at its best. 5 out of 5 stars.Book has been provided courtesy of Harvest House Publishers for the purposes of this unbiased review.

Here’s my thoughts on hi YA novel:What I liked:After reading the first chapter of this book, I did realize that this was a sequel, but with the exception of a just a few comments, I did not feel that I needed the first book to understand who people were and how they functioned in this series.King. The main character’s name is William King (called King) and like most of Brouwer’s characters, he is incredibly smart and resourceful and extremely likeable. King is suffering from PTSD (from the first novel), but still has to pull it together to help out the rest of his crew. The crew. I really enjoyed the characters of MJ and Blake. They added a lot of humor and fun to a book that really dealt with serious CIA issues. MJ, was of course, both annoying and fun. I found that their personalities were really fleshed out well.Spiritually, the novel is light on things, but it brings up the topic of when is it okay to lie. At what point does God think lying is okay (i.e. Nazis) and at what point shouldn’t you partake in it. Deep stuff. What I didn’t like:I found it a bit cliche that these kids are so brilliant that the CIA needs them, but then again the CIA wouldn’t need them if they weren’t so brilliant. The ending. How the mystery wrapped up was so random to me that it was almost jarring. I was like wait, what?Romantic scale: 0Overall, a fun mystery with charismatic characters.

The characters continued to switch their loyalties and everyone was good, then they were bad, then, wow! They were all good again! I read until the end, desperately hoping for some conclusion to be reached, but their important quest to rescue a girl turned out to basically be staged by a good guy (who you thought was bad) to educate them... or maybe to give him an excuse to throw a pool party, which he did with all the characters at the end. There was nowhere to hide from the confusing plot. I personally do not like this book and would not recommend it.

The story draws one in immediately by the author's ability to make you feel you are actually there. The author's imagination is exceptional. It doesn't take long to notice that you start living the parts of the characters, you feel their joy, their sense of adventure, their heightened scene of awareness when coming across the various creatures within a land of giant animals and peoples. You also feel the sadness and despair of the different characters when hardship arises in their paths of adventure. This book can be read and enjoyed by all age groups. This book is a must read and I found it to read as good as the The Chronicles of Narnia, The Harry Potter series, The Lord of the Rings, and The Hobbit. It will not be to far in the future before this book finds itself in the cinemas!

Are the heroes really villains or vice versa? Strange beasts and creatures appear....frightful or familiar? The three quasi friends take on an insurmountable task and must answer the same questions I had, just to survive. I was startled by the twists and turns at every juncture but was equally intrigued by how family, friendship and compassion for the most vulnerable in both worlds was masterfully woven through the adventure. The sweetest surprise was saved for the very last. My final question is..........what's next?

From the Opéra Garnier to the Eiffel tower, passing by the métro of Paris, it depicts very well the history of music, not just classical but also rap and pop.It was one of a rollercoaster of emotions on that third book for Maude confronts with many unexpected situations and even at the end!Needless to say i'm eager to read the sequel that looks promising!

After reading the first two books in this series I was really looking forward to the third instalment and it hasn't disappointed. In this book we see Maude develop further as an individual as she moves to a new school. This move sees new friends also opens Maude up to enable her to realise her feelings towards both music and people and pursue these feelings.I loved reading about this latest journey of Maude's and enjoyed seeing both the good and the bad changes in Matt and Maude's friendship. I can't wait for the fourth book to come out to read about where Maude's journey takes her next.

The book settled in very well with the preceding titles. You join Maude back in her world, where she makes some very important decisions. There are tons of secrets revealed, as well as a couple of plot twists. The story never got boring with all the adventures, humorous situations, and witty dialogue present. Also, the author's writing style just hooks you and makes you want to read nonstop.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Very Impressive Christian Fantasy Debut Short Story (Part of a larger Novel, More Volumes to Come!) By Peter Younghusband I discovered this short story via a Helping Hands Press email advertising the book and author. I bought it as soon as it was released. This is a very short read of 33 pages and the debut writing from this author.I really liked this short volume. It shows a lot of promise in what it sets out as far as characters, plot and intrigue are concerned. I can see that there will be some spiritual warfare topics arising in future volumes, good versus evil, demon gods, one introduced as Varen, against the One God, known as Ghaedesh-Mor.There are the beginnings of world building, we have a race of people called Ma'apone, another called Davarenges, we have unique names for days and time, days are referred to as Arcs, minutes as Units, Seasons are years. These two races live in the land of Aedistamen. Spiritually, we have a religion based on the number 5, Five Ordinances, Five Elements etc. We have the beginnings of the history of these two races and their religions, and of course, this involved a war between the two. We also have the beginnings of a prophecy originates from Ghaedesh-Mor and I believe will run throughout forthcoming volumes and be a dominant plotline throughout. We have murder, conspiracy, bribery, deceit, abuse of power, we have one race dominating the other and treating them as slaves. All this packed into a 33 page short introductory volume and it really does set the atmosphere very well.Hilling has one great imagination. He also writes well. I am hooked in this series. I believe he is onto something here. I am looking forward to seeing how this series develops and being absorbed in the land of Aedistamen.Highly Recommended

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. It was a waste of my money buying it By Amazon Customer This is the most inaccurate and strangely written description of Henry VIII.s court. It was a waste of my money buying it.

8 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Yikes... By The Secretary I thought this book was written in some previous time period, like in the Victorian era when people were so prudish. Stunningly this is a newer book. It is filled with major historical inaccuracies, a very narrowminded view of Henry III, and longwinded religious views that no one at that time would have spoken or even thought to themselves. This is more of a work of fiction than a researched, historically accurate biography.

Lady Susan, by Jane Austen

Review "I wanted them all, even those I'd already read." —Ron Rosenbaum, The New York Observer "Small wonders." —Time Out London "[F]irst-rate…astutely selected and attractively packaged…indisputably great works." —Adam Begley, The New York Observer "I’ve always been haunted by Bartleby, the proto-slacker. But it’s the handsomely minimalist cover of the Melville House edition that gets me here, one of many in the small publisher’s fine 'Art of the Novella' series." —The New Yorker "The Art of the Novella series is sort of an anti-Kindle. What these singular, distinctive titles celebrate is book-ness. They're slim enough to be portable but showy enough to be conspicuously consumed—tiny little objects that demand to be loved for the commodities they are." —KQED (NPR San Francisco) "Some like it short, and if you're one of them, Melville House, an independent publisher based in Brooklyn, has a line of books for you... elegant-looking paperback editions ...a good read in a small package." —The Wall Street Journal

About the Author One of England s most beloved authors, Jane Austen wrote such classic novels as Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, and Northanger Abbey. Published anonymously during her life, Austen s work was renowned for its realism, humour, and commentary on English social rites and society at the time. Austen s writing was supported by her family, particularly by her brother, Henry, and sister, Cassandra, who is believed to have destroyed, at Austen s request, her personal correspondence after Austen s death in 1817. Austen s authorship was revealed by her nephew in A Memoir of Jane Austen, published in 1869, and the literary value of her work has since been recognized by scholars around the world.

152 of 161 people found the following review helpful. Minor treasures from the Jane Austen treasure chest By JLind555 Jane Austen is known for six complete novels, each one a masterpiece. This Penguin Classics compilation features one novel unpublished in her lifetime and two unfinished fragments. This book is proof that even an incomplete Austen is better than no Austen at all."Lady Susan" is an epistolary novel whose eponymous anti-heroine, unlike the women featured in Austen's other works, is bad to the bone. When the book opens, Lady Susan, a stunningly beautiful widow in her upper thirties, has just been sent packing from the home of a family she had spent some months with, having been discovered carrying on a flagrant affair with the husband of the family, right under his wife's nose. She takes refuge with her kind-hearted brother and his sensible wife, who sees through Lady Susan from the day she enters the house and can't wait to see her leave. Also in the home are Lady Susan's teenage daughter, who has been expelled from boarding school after attempting to run away so that she won't be forced into marrying the rich, fatuous nobleman her mother has picked out for her; and the younger brother of Lady Susan's sister-in-law, who has heard intimations about Lady Susan's unsavory reputation; in retaliation for his initial disdain, Lady Susan sets out to captivate him and succeeds so well that she has him on the brink of proposing marriage to her, despite the fact that he is 12 years younger than she is, much to the alarm of his family. It looks as though he is about to fall into her clutches, when a chance meeting between him and the wife of Lady Susan's lover blows all Lady Susan's machinations, as well as her reputation, to smithereens.Lady Susan, to save what is left of her honor, ends up marrying the rich, fatuous nobleman she intended for her daughter; Jane Austen slyly hints that Lady Susan and her married lover will continue their affair under the noses of both their spouses. The book's ending is in a narrative style that appears simply tacked on, as if Austen got tired of both the story and the epistolary style she wrote it in; but on the whole, it's an enjoyable read, interesting mostly because it is so different in style and content from the books we're familiar with."The Watsons" is a delight from beginning to middle; I can't say "end" because, unfortunately, Austen never finished it. It's very much in the style of her six major works. Emma Watson is the youngest child of a large family and has been raised by her rich aunt since early childhood; she is thrown back on her impoverished family when her aunt makes an ill-advised second marriage. She is thus reintroduced at the age of 19 to her terminally ill father, two brothers and three unmarried sisters. Emma is a refreshingly original heroine very much in the style of Elizabeth Bennet; she's bright, astute, spirited, perceptive, down to earth, and unimpressed with mere good looks and money. She has no problem rejecting the town casanova who thinks he's all that and a bag of chips; nor is she especially impressed by the young lord of the manor who is infatuated with her. A footnote to the story says that Jane Austen told her sister how the book was to end; we could have guessed it even without the footnote, but it's a great story and would surely have been included in her major works if only she had lived to complete it."Sanditon" is probably the best known of Austen's unpublished works; it's also a fragment of a novel, very different in content from her finished works. Austen excels in writing about manners and morals; "Sanditon" is more about social commentary, and somehow, it doesn't work as well. The characters in "Sanditon" are not as interesting or compelling as the people in her other works; they are not nearly as well drawn; they're more like sketches or caricatures than three-dimensional persons. It's difficult to tell how she would have ended the book, and there's not really enough interest to the plot to make us want to know. "Sanditon" is the weakest of the three stories in this volume, but "The Watsons" and "Lady Susan" more than make up for its defects. One can see in these two works the development of a great writer.Judy Lind

By Mary Whipple Though Lady Susan is considered part of Jane Austen's "juvenilia," having been written ca. 1805, it was not published till well after Jane Austen's death and is still not counted among her "six novels." In fact, this seventh novel, though not as thoughtful or thought-provoking as the "famous six," is one of her wittiest and most spirited. Written in epistolary style, it is the story of Lady Susan, a beautiful, recent widow with no conscience, a woman who is determined to do exactly what she wants to do, to charm and/or seduce any man who appeals to her, and to secure a proper marriage for her teenage daughter, whom she considers both unintelligent and lacking in charm.Lady Susan, the character, has no redeeming qualities, other than her single-mindedness, and her problems, entirely self-imposed, show the extremes to which an unprincipled woman will go to ensure her own pleasure and ultimately a more secure, comfortable life. As Lady Susan manipulates men, women, and even her young nieces and nephews, her venality knows no bounds, and when she determines that her daughter Frederica WILL marry Sir James, a man who utterly repulses her, Lady Susan's love of power and her willingness to create whatever "truth" best suits her purpose become obvious.Austen must have had fun writing this novel which "stars" a character who to appears to be her own opposite. While this novel is not a pure "farce," it is closer to that than anything else Austen ever wrote. Containing humor, the satiric depiction of an aristocratic woman of monstrous egotism, her romantic dalliances and comeuppances, and her ability to land on her feet, no matter what obstacles are thrown in her path, the novel is a light comedy in which the manners and morals of the period are shown in sharp relief--Lady Susan vs. Catherine Vernon, her sensible sister-in-law; the free-wheeling Lady Susan and those who love the city vs. the moral grounding of those who live in the country; the sexual power of an unprincipled woman vs. the "proper ladies" who, along with their husbands, become her victims. While this novel is not as "finished" as her more famous novels (the conclusion is weak), it shows Austen as a more playful novelist than in her other novels, an author who is obviously having fun introducing a wild card like Lady Susan into polite society to show how ill-equipped men are to deal with someone so clever. This surprising novel by Austen shows her as a careful observer of society but a polite critic of that society at the same time. Mary Whipple

Not your typical Austen By Southern Housewife This short story is certainly not your typical Austen depicting a heroine's romance and then a happy ending. This story is in the form of letters, which was handled well, but I think limits Austen's story telling ability. In Lady Susan the heroine is in fact a manipulative villain with no redeeming qualities and I found myself frustrated with the other characters reactions to her schemes. I also thought the letter format limited character development and had this been in the form of her more traditional novels it might have been a very interesting story with a meddling mother and her daughter becoming our heroine. Worth a read but if you're a fan of Austen's novels this is quite a change of pace.
