When sixteen-year-old Ambry Csille's brother gets taken in a raid by Arcaian soldiers, her utter fear and panic should be enough to invoke tears in any normal world. But for Ambry, tears are a thing of the past. Because of a spell, people can no longer feel emotion; not enough to cry, and definitely not enough to defend themselves against the tyrannical soldiers stealing her people's magic. A rare vial of enchanted tears chooses Ambry to reverse the spell, and soon she finds herself the target not only of the Arcaians, but of battle-scarred Talon Haraway, who wants the tears for his own reasons. All Ambry wants is to rescue her brother, but when her tears get stolen, Ambry determines to work with Talon to get them back. Any day the Arcaians could drink her tears. Any day they'll succeed at draining her people's magic completely, and all hope will be gone--not only for her brother, but for her world.

Seriously, the story just propelled itself forward and there were periods I forgot I was reading. I was so caught up in Talon and Kiana's adventure... I was there in the hot moments (Talon is HOT!!!), the heart wrenching moments, the plot twisting moments... I think I stood up and screamed at one point. It's been a LONG time since I've read such an original fantasy story. Love the world building. Love the concept. Highly recommend. :)

I was excited to get a chance to read Such a Secret Place for the review tour. I'm a big fan of both fantasy and young adult literature, so I thought this would be up my alley. All in all, this was a decent read.I wasn't really a big fan of the main character throughout the novel, but I didn't hate her either- I still was rooting for her throughout the book. It just got to some points where she really, really annoyed me. It was kind of like that one friend that we all have that you love dearly but just want to shoosh them sometimes. Most of the time, I was able to push this aside to focus on other aspects of the book, such as the awesome world building. I really liked the way that magic was integrated throughout both the world that Pearson created as well as the plot of the story. I liked that there wasn't really instalove, though there is a romantic kindling. I adore Talon, and I can't wait to read more of him in the next book in the series. This book is rather complicated at times, but that's part of why I liked it. I think that's part of what I like about fantasy in general- the intricacies of a new world, and of the new creations or races or what have you that take up that world. The writing got a bit flowery for my liking in some parts, but overall I thought Pearson was really well detailed. It was easy to get lost in the story and swept up in Ambry's adventures.Unrelated to the content of the book, I also really like the cover design. I think it's a fair reflection of the story within, and it'd catch my eye on a display.I'd recommend this to fans of YA fantasy, especially ones that feature magic as a key part of the plot. While this wasn't a perfect read for me, I enjoyed it well enough and I would definitely consider picking up the next book to read more about Talon and Ambry. The strongest element to this story is the world building, which I absolutely loved.I received this book in exchange for my honest review.

By Mark Gardner When I saw the cover on NetGalley, I was going to keep browsing, but I came back for the description. I liked the story, but I did have a few issues with it. We all understand that Ambry is special – that’s kinda how these types of stories work, but oh, the angst! Ambry is angsty, her friends are angsty, even though their emotions have been stolen. I know that book titles don’t always represent the story contained within, but I never got the reference to a secret place. There were one or two places that could’ve been the secret place, but I was left hanging. I felt the same way with the over-arching plot: at the end of the book, major plot points are not resolved. This may seem like a negative review, but I did enjoy reading this story, and will definitely check out Stolen Tears #2 when it comes out. I'd give this one 3.5 stars.

Can newfound love survive the ravages of modern warfare in the land of the Queen of Sheba?

Twenty-something Ceseli Larson is mourning the recent death of her cherished father. His passing comes as she prepares to undertake a planned but harrowing expedition to the lost ruins of Axum. Axum, capital of an ancient kingdom and the possible resting place of the Ark of the Covenant, was also once the famous home of the Queen of Sheba. Ceseli hopes to uncover its long-forgotten archaeological mysteries.

What she does not count on, though, is that Benito Mussolini's invasion of Ethiopia looms on the horizon, about to be unleashed, sending an already dangerous journey into chaos. Nor does she expect the feeling she discovers for a young Italian doctor, nor the romance that blossoms between them.

Love in the Land of Barefoot Soldiers is a sweeping tale of romance and war, as Ceseli is caught between the movements of empires and her growing love for a member of the invading army. History and the destruction of the modern era collide in this exciting drama.

Ms. Vieta is thoroughly familiar with the settings depicted in this novel as well as the background of the Italian invasion of Ethiopia and it shows. Her characters are well drawn ---resourceful, high-spirited Ceseli Larson in unforgettable. A great way to get to know Ethiopia/Abyssinia, one of the only independent countries in Africa in 1935, as well as what it was like to travel there in tense times.

This book will join Alan Moorehead's Blue Nile as required reading for anyone traveling in the region. A privileged American woman becomes embroiled in the horrific pre-WWII Italian invasion of Ethiopia. The story is good. The historic detail is so compelling that I found myself researching the bits and pieces as I read the book. What an amazing place Ethiopia is and what a beautiful job the author does in explaining it against the backdrop of an unjust war.

By Michelle An engrossing, well-researched tale that takes place in pre WW2 Ethiopia -- I learned so much history while the plot carried me along. If only the author will produce a sequel, I'd be thrilled.

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Max has a pretty good scheme running. With his girlfriend Parvati and his best friend Preston, he sells lies of any shape or form to his classmates at Vista Palisades High under the name Liars, Inc. It's mainly small stuff like forging a parent's signature on permission forms or providing an alibi for teens who want to spend uninterrupted time with boyfriends or girlfriends. And, it's pretty lucrative-the three friends are making a lot of money for dealing in half-truths and fabrications. But all that changes when Max provides a cover story to Preston's parents so that Preston can go to Las Vegas to see a girl he met on the Internet. The trouble is, Preston never comes home. Preston's dad is a senator, and suddenly, Max is being interrogated by the FBI. He's on his own to find out the truth about what Preston was really doing and why. Liars, Inc. is an interesting mystery with enough plot twists and turns to keep teens motivated to keep reading. However, Max and the secondary characters are not developed enough for readers to truly care about what happens to them. Max's relationship with Parvati, which her parents disapprove of so much that they've forbidden her to see him, is mainly described in terms of their sexual activity; she seems to have little personality aside from her relationships with the men in the story-Max, her dad, and Preston. An additional purchase for libraries where mysteries or books with twist endings are desired. For those who wish to read about liars and the intricate web they weave, steer them toward We Were Liars by E. Lockhart (Random, 2014).—Traci Glass, Eugene Public Library, OR

Review “Stokes continues to masterfully plant crumbs and red herrings on the road to the solving the mystery. The action is nonstop in this dark, psychological thriller. Readers will be on edge until the satisfying conclusion.” (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA))“An interesting mystery with plot twists and turns to keep teens reading.” (School Library Journal)"Max is so well-drawn it's hard not to be completely sympathetic to his predicament...the author twists and turns at all the right moments. Even the keenest mystery buffs will be hard-pressed to predict the book's finale, which packs quite the emotional and physical punch. Captivating to the very end."--Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Max Cantrell has never been a big fan of the truth, so when the opportunity arises to sell lies to his classmates, it sounds like a good way to make a little money and liven up a boring senior year. With the help of his friends Preston and Parvati, Max starts a business providing forged permission slips and cover stories for the students of Vista Palisades High. Liars, Inc., they call it. Suddenly everybody needs something and the cash starts pouring in. Who knew lying could be so lucrative?

When Preston wants his own cover story to go visit a girl he met online, Max doesn't think twice about hooking him up. Until Preston never comes home. Then the evidence starts to pile up—terrifying clues that lead the cops to Preston's body.

Terrifying clues that point to Max as the murderer. But can Max find the real killer before it's too late?

Paula Stokes starts with one little white lie and weaves a twisted tale that will have readers guessing until the very end.

By Christina (Ensconced in Lit) I've been following Paula Stokes' career for a while now. She started off with the ambitious historical thriller romance trilogy (Venom) that just got better from book to book, then the absolutely sweet and endearing Art of Lainey that just makes you want to jump up and hug the book (okay I hugged it, sue me). Now she comes roaring back with Liars, Inc. a clever YA whodunit that I didn't even see coming. One thing I really look for in authors is that they take risks and try something new. Stokes does just that in spades.I feel like clever YA contemp thrillers are lacking for the most part. The ones I've read were passable at best. Most of them I would eventually start skimming through in boredom to get to the answer at the end, which is what I figured out in the first 5 pages. This book was so far from that.I don't really like doing synopses in my reviews-- you can easily find that anywhere. So briefly, Max starts a business in his high school to lie for other people so they can be places they "shouldn't" be, and on top of that, he gets paid. But when his best friend ends up missing, he becomes the main suspect.First, we start off with a great protagonist. Max is that deadbeat guy we all knew in high school. Some readers won't like him because he's not very driven and is laidback to the point that he sometimes lets his life run him over instead of taking charge himself. But that's why he's so awesome-- he's realistic, and he has opportunity to change. But he's not my favorite character. Parvati, his girlfriend is. She's not your sweet, doe eyed character--she's a force to be reckoned with, and steals every scene she's in. Stokes does a good job of reeling her in enough that we don't get swept off with her instead of paying attention to Max. That said, I have a feeling that we'll be seeing her again in maybe her own story-- she's just that intriguing.Stokes does a terrific job of keeping a good, quick pace all the way through the story. I never felt bored, just wanted to know what was happening with the characters and where the story was going. She gets bonus points for surprising a jaded and hardened reader who can sniff out a plot twist a mile away.Overall, this is a great YA thriller mystery in the same vein as the new show, How to Get Away with Murder. Stokes keeps surprising and impressing me with each new book. If you want a book that will keep you reading into the wee hours of the night, this is the one.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. So Much Fun! By kindlemom1 (My Guilty Obsession) Oh the tangles webs we weave when first we try to deceive. Is it wrong that I actually really liked this book? I mean, considering it is all about lying? I couldn't help it though, I loved the premises and I even liked devious Max.This is one of those stories that you don't have to connect in anyway to the characters, in order to be invested in the rest of the story and while that would sometimes bother me, it really worked for the theme of the story. After all, in this story, no one is who they seem to be and everyone has a secret. And even though I knew what was coming for the most part, this was such an engaging read that it didn't even matter. I liked the suspense and the mystery and all the deception. In fact, this book couldn't possibly have a better title than the one it does, it fit perfectly with everything going on.Once again it was a joy to get a story with a male protagonist. One who was brutally honest in all that he thought, said and did.I loved that this was very real even though it wasn't real. Doesn't make sense I know but if you read it, it will. I loved the family bond between Max, his mom, and his sister. It just worked so well for this story, especially since the friendship bond just want there. But instead filled with the most lies and deceit of all. This troy just worked and it worked for no reason at all other than the engaging writing. A non stop plot, and an interesting, almost thrilling mystery. This was pretty well done and I enjoyed it much more than I expected I would. I look forward to picking up whatever else this author decides to write in the future simply because I know I will have a great time while reading it.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. I wish I liked this one By Angela R I was looking forward to reading this book because of all the reviews, so my hopes were high. Perhaps my hopes were too high and that's why I borderline-hated this book. Did I read the whole thing? Yes- I'm the type of person who needs to finish the book to find out what happens, and sometimes the ending changes my perspective of my opinion.I'm also horrible at describing why I like/dislike books, but I'll give it a try (bear with me, this is the first review I've ever written). The whole book was so unrealistic that it skewed my opinion to the negative. I liked the main character for the first 50-60 pages, but then the idiotic decisions and choices began happening. Normally I can bypass stupid decisions of a character, but these were just so inane that I couldn't get past them. You know how in a horror movie, you're yelling at the screen telling the main character not to go outside because that's where the killer is? I thought the characters in this book were worse than that.No matter how I didn't like the plot/decisions of the characters, I will say the writing was exceptional, and the book is a fast read. I finished it within a couple hours, and while the general plot was okay, the un-realness of the whole thing took away everything for me. I hope you like/liked this book more than I did!

How is this book unique?

Formatted for E-Readers, Unabridged & Original version. You will find it much more comfortable to read on your device/app. Easy on your eyes. Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography The Age of Reason; Being an Investigation of True and Fabulous Theology is an influential work written by English and American political activist Thomas Paine. It follows in the tradition of eighteenth-century British deism, and challenges institutionalized religion and the legitimacy of the Bible (the central Christian text). Originally distributed as unbound pamphlets, it was published in three parts in 1794, 1795, and 1807. It was a best-seller in the United States, where it caused a short-lived deistic revival. British audiences, however, fearing increased political radicalism as a result of the French Revolution, received it with more hostility. The Age of Reason presents common deistic arguments; for example, it highlights what Paine saw as corruption of the Christian Church and criticizes its efforts to acquire political power. Paine advocates reason in the place of revelation, leading him to reject miracles and to view the Bible as "an ordinary piece of literature rather than as a divinely inspired text". It promotes natural religion and argues for the existence of a creator-God. Most of Paine's arguments had long been available to the educated elite, but by presenting them in an engaging and irreverent style, he made deism appealing and accessible to a mass audience. The book was also inexpensive, putting it within the reach of a large number of buyers. Fearing the spread of what they viewed as potentially revolutionary ideas, the British government prosecuted printers and book-sellers who tried to publish and distribute it. Nevertheless, Paine's work inspired and guided many free thinkers.

The Age Of Reason: Color Illustrated, Formatted for E-Readers (Unabridged Version), by Thomas Paine

From the Publisher COSIMO CLASSICS offers distinctive titles by the great authors and thinkers who have inspired, informed and engaged readers throughout the ages.

From the Author THOMAS PAINE (1737-1809) was an Anglo-American political theorist and writer born in Norfolk, England. In 1774, Paine emigrated to America, bearing letters of introduction from Benjamin Franklin. Soon thereafter, he became involved in the clashes between England and the American colonies and published the enormously successful pamphlet Common Sense in 1776, which was widely distributed and contributed to the patriot cause throughout the American Revolution.

About the Author English-born Thomas Paine left behind hearth and home for adventures on the high seas at nineteen. Upon returning to shore, he became a tax officer, and it was this job that inspired him to write The Case of the Officers of Excise in 1772. Paine then immigrated to Philadelphia, and in 1776 he published Common Sense, a defense of American independence from England. After returning to Europe, Paine wrote his famous Rights of Man as a response to criticism of the French Revolution. He was subsequently labeled as an outlaw, leading him to flee to France where he joined the National Convention. However, in 1793 Paine was imprisoned, and during this time he wrote the first part of The Age of Reason, an anti-church text which would go on to be his most famous work. After his release, Paine returned to America where he passed away in 1809.

196 of 205 people found the following review helpful. A defense of deism and a polemic against theism By D. Cloyce Smith Thomas Paine, like others among our nation's founders (Ethan Allen, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Joel Barlow), considered himself a deist, a term that encompasses a wide range of beliefs but is principally based on "religious rationalism": that, initially created by a benevolent God, the universe operates on rational rather than supernatural principles. Paine (and Allen), however, departed from the cautiously nuanced approach to religious issues adopted by his peers and vociferously rejected Judeo-Christian tenets and scriptures. In "The Age of Reason," Paine outlines his objections to theism and his belief in deism, and he dissects the inconsistencies in both the Old and New Testaments.Paine published the book in two parts: the first he hurriedly finished in January 1794 when he realized he would be arrested during the French Revolution (passages were in fact written from the Luxembourg Palace in Paris, where he was imprisoned). The second part was written the following year, and he responds to the critics of the first part with a no-holds-barred attack on the veracity of the Bible.Paine presents his basic belief that "it is only in the creation that all our ideas and conceptions of a word of God can unite," and later in the book he says that "the creation is the bible of the deist." To Paine, the Bible is the word of man, not the Word of God, and he confronts many of the literalist beliefs proffered by the clergy and worshippers in his day. Many of his arguments, once shocking and blasphemous, are now taken for granted. For instance, he analyzes internal evidence in the books allegedly written by Moses, Joshua, and Samuel to show that it's impossible for Moses, Joshua, and Samuel to have written them--a view that most Christians and nearly all biblical scholars acknowledge today. In other ways, he is way ahead of his time, pondering the minuteness of our world in the immensity of the universe, speculating that other planets around other stars may well hold other intelligent species, and mocking the resulting conclusion that "the Son of God . . . would have nothing else to do than to travel from world to world, in an endless succession of death."Paine believes that God made a complex multi-world universe (rather than a single world) so that it would serve as a textbook for humankind: "As therefore the Creator made nothing in vain, so also must it be believed that he organized the structure of the universe in the most advantageous manner for the benefit of man." It is through this "revelation" of nature that believers can know God: "The principles of science lead to this knowledge; for the creator of man is the creator of science, and it is through that medium that man can see God, as it were, face to face."Even if one disagrees with Paine (and many obviously do),"The Age of Reason" is an essential book both historically and philosophically. It should be read whether you hope to provide support for your own beliefs or to discover what non-Christians thought two centuries ago. It's inevitable that every reader will approach this book with an agenda, but even Christians should wrestle with Paine's arguments--since many of them are still heard today.

Age of Reason is still sparking debate By Sara It is evident to me that the staying power of Paine's Age of Reason is strong-- I need only look through the mixed opinions here at Amazon to see how dramatically it impacts those who read it. For me, it was a great wake-up call. I read Age of Reason at the beginning of this year and didn't know much about what to expect. From the first few pages I knew that I had found a book that reflects how I feel about religion. Paine offers a sensible alternative to atheism and the vast supply of revealed religions that abound in the world. To be logical, Paine points out, you need not give up a belief in a Higher Power. But you also don't have to sell your soul to charlatans and holy books written hundreds of years ago by men, not gods. The first half of Age of Reason outlines Paine's own beliefs as well as those he rejects. He gives reasons for every point he agrees or disagrees with and it is clear to the reader how Paine feels. Paine wants to spell out what his thoughts are so that he won't be misjudged by his peers. (Jefferson went through a similar ordeal-- because of his connections with France, he was labeled "a French infidel and atheist" neither of which was a true statement. See _The Religious Life of Thomas Jefferson_ for more info.)In the second half, Paine sets out to show the Biblical discrepancies to those who wanted to prove his ideas false by using the Bible as their "evidence". In a relatively small number of pages, Paine debunks and demystifies (in my opinion) a fair amount of 'Christian' theology and scripture. If one man can do it so well in only a few pages, what does that say for revealed religion? That question is for each of us to answer individually and Age of Reason is required reading for anyone who is serious in doing just that.

Rich If the title above seems like hyperbole, I am prepared to defend it: Thomas Paine was one of the most important figures of the American revolution, his pamphlet "Common Sense" did more to bring the colonies to revolt than any other document. After the revolution he went to France believing the French revolution to be the next step in the development of the freedom of mankind. While there he was condemned to death by Robespierre and detained pending execution. Believing that his death was imminent, Paine wrote Part One of Age of Reason, which is a compelling critique of the Bible and the faults of Christianity. His analysis is thorough, detailed and compelling, which is particularly impressive since he did it entirely without access to a Bible! This topic will offend many (which explains Paine's current demise from the pantheon of revolutionary heroes) but it should be read both for its analysis of the Bible and for appreciation of one of America's founding fathers.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Captivating! By Betty Vickery I thoroughly enjoyed the Queen's Tribute as much as I did Gifted Magic. The author's creative invention of an unusual genre of magical beings makes for refreshing plot possibilities. Kya uses a refreshingly original approach to magical to further develop the characters we met in Gifted Magic. The introduction of new characters into the series is done smoothly and believably with the unusual assistance of one theft prone, sassy horse named Barn. All of the characters take their place on the stage of the overall plot to rescue a kingdom in perill. This is not the typical rescue by any means. The characters and story are consistent, and the set up for the next book in the series is well done without leaving so many ends hanging that the reader is frustrated in having to wait for it. Rather, the reader is left with anticipation at how the next part of the story will unfold.

By Robin Although it could use a little more editing, The Queen's Tribute is a fast-paced adventure worthy of its predecessor. Indigo snagged me from her first appearance and from them on I couldn't put the book(phone) down. Loved it!

Bloated on chaos, the Morrigan leaves the Scottish Highlands to gather power. A trip through Hell yields quite the assortment of allies tagging along behind her. Fell creatures straight out of myth and nightmare that haven’t darkened Earth’s boundaries for centuries heed her call. Heartily sick of the Morrigan’s maneuvering, the dragons are close to shutting their world off from everywhere, Earth included. If they do, every dragon shifter bond will be broken. Horrified, Lachlan and Britta launch a desperate campaign to hang onto their dragons. Magic may bite back, but if the dragons take their magic ball and go home, Earth will fade, along with all other worlds. That suits the Morrigan fine. War and anarchy are her favorite companions, and she collects misery like children gather beloved toys. Arianrhod’s fellow Celts found out about her fall from grace and her half-Druid son, Jonathan. With nothing further to hide, she goes back in time hunting Angus, Jonathan’s father. Forty years apart was a steep price to pay. The world needs Angus’s magic. And Jonathan needs all the help he can get. Late to accept the power thrumming through him, he holds a key role in keeping the world from spinning off its axis. Reluctant at first, Jonathan finally gets it. Absolute focus. Absolute commitment. Anything less and everyone he loves will pay an unthinkable price.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Wow! What a spellbinding finale for the series. The Morrigan gets what she deserves and everyone else gets their HEA. By SFF Dragon 'Dragon's Dare', book three but story four brings the truly spellbinding Dragon Lore series by Ann Gimpel to it's end. And what a fantastic end it is too. I was given a copy by the author in exchange for an honest review and absolutely loved it. I'd like to say I couldn't put it down, but it took me nearly five days to read this full-length novel. What I can say is I really didn't want to put it down and fell asleep clutching it three nights in a row. This action packed paranormal romance brings together all the characters and threads from the previous books, as well as a few new ones from other mythologies, for a final battle and a grand finale that gripped me from the first page to the last and I completely ignored everything I should've been doing in favour of reading this wonderful book instead. Thank goodness for slow cookers, microwave ovens, freezers and partners who can cook. It's hard to write something that will do this terrific story justice without giving spoilers and I could go on and on, but I will say this book made me laugh and cry. I became emotionally involved with the characters and there were times when I thought a happy ending wasn't going to be possible for some of the characters. I felt their sadness, despair and heartbreak when things looked really black for them and the joy they felt when things turned out alright. I was relieved and elated when some of the bad guys found they'd been lied to by The Morrigan and either withdrew from the battle or became good guys in the war against the chaos and evil she continually perpetrated in her drive for power and control.Filled with gods and goddesses, witches, mages and seers, dragons and dragon shifters, skirmishes and full-blown battles between creatures of myth and legend fighting for the future of not only Earth and all it's inhabitants, but Fire Mountain, home of the dragons and a whole host of other worlds. There's also love, laughter, steamy bits, and happily ever afters for Arianrhod & Angus, Maggie & Lachlin, and Britta & Jonathan, but they have to walk through fire to get them, in some cases literally. Jonathan finally finds his destiny and The Morrigan gets exactly what she deserves. Life goes on but.....This is a fantastic book, and like a lot of Ann Gimpel's stories, it's not really written to be a stand alone but the last in a series, and although you could read it on it's own, there's so much of the background to the characters and their relationships in the previous books that you would be missing out on a lot, not only on great stories with their own paranormal romances, but you'd get so much more from this one if you read the books in order. I'd like to give this book more, but since 5 stars is the maximum I can give, it gets 5 very well earned stars from me. I can't recommend it highly enough.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Wow! A great conclusion! By Karli This is a riveting, suspense filled conclusion of the battle to save Earth from total devastation at the hands of the powerful, evil, manipulative, shapeshifting Morrigan. Victory comes at a cost, however, and our band of friends and family will not go unscathed. This series has an overarching storyline that builds with each book, so it is best to start at the beginning, with Highland Secrets, the story of Angus and Airnrhod, the Virgin Huntress. Even at the end, they are still my favorite couple.Jonathan Shea grew up among witches, but barely tapped the storehouse of powers he held, largely because of watching as his father slipped more and more into the dream world. Then when his father totally disappeared when Jonathan was seventeen, he focused on computers and game design. That was until he met Britta and her bonded First Born dragon, Tarika, in book three and his life changed irrevocably. Now Jonathan is fighting to protect those he loves from the Morrigan, the Battle Crow of the Celts, who is subverting the Dragon shifter bond and collecting allies from Hades to defeat those who stand against her.

By Tammy Northington The final story is this series is about the fight to rid Earth of the Morrigan, aka the Battle Crow, & also a Celtic God. She thrives on chaos & destruction. The Reluctant Widow, by Georgette Heyer

Amazon.com Review Georgette Heyer is best known for her witty and charming Regency romances, but she is also responsible for a handful of mystery novels. On occasion, mystery would find its way into her romances, embroiling her well-born heroes and heroines in adventures that were alternately chilling and hilarious. In The Reluctant Widow, Eleanor Rochdale, a young woman of good birth but straitened circumstances, sets out to accept a position as a governess and ends up plunged into a tangle of foreign intrigue instead.

Eleanor's adventure begins when she inadvertently mistakes the carriage waiting at the coach stop for one sent by her prospective employer, Mrs. Macclesfield. She finds herself carried to the estate of one Ned Carlyon, whom Eleanor mistakes for Mr. Macclesfield. Carlyon, meanwhile, believes Eleanor to be the young woman he hired to marry his dying cousin, Eustace Cheviot, in order to avoid inheriting Cheviot's estate himself. Somehow, Eleanor is talked into marrying Eustace on his deathbed and thus becomes a wealthy widow almost as soon as the ring is on her finger. What starts out as a simple business arrangement soon becomes much more complicated as housebreakers, uninvited guests, a shocking murder, missing government papers, and a dog named Bouncer all contribute to this lively, frequently hilarious tale of mistaken identities, foreign espionage, and unexpected love set during the Napoleonic Wars.

This is probably my favorite Heyer so far. From the Inside Flap By chance, Elinor Rochdale is swept up in a thrilling adventure. Overnight the would-be governess becomes mistress of a ruined estate and partner in a conspiracy to save a family's name. By midnight she is a bride, by dawn a widow.

I actually discovered them by accident in a used bookstore where my older brother had a job. (One must patronize establishments where family members are employed.)I have loved her novels right from the start. I have read all of them more than once. Some I have read many times. The Reluctant Widow is one of the special ones that I have read so often I have lost count of how many times I have read it.I have noticed with the passing years that the novels that I first liked the most, the really romantic ones, have palled some over the years and that it is the funnier ones that I read over more and more. Maybe it is because I was lacking romance in my life when I started reading Georgette Heyer but now I have had more than enough romance and I appreciate humor more. It's true that there is not much romance in this novel, or not much outward signs of romance. It really is more of a comic mystery than a romance. Yet having read it so many times, I can now detect the subtle signs of developing love between Elinor and Ned, especially Ned. It seems that time after time Ned comes up with reasons why Elinor cannot leave and get on with her life. After reading it so many times, I think that Ned may very well have fallen in love with Elinor at first sight but is reticient to do anything about it for quite a while. To be truthful, the romance in all of Georgette Heyers novels is always secondary to the plot. In many of her novels, the hero does not make clear his intentions until the last chapter, sometimes even as late as the last 2 pages of the novel. If you are a romance addict, this can be very tiresome, having to wait so long for the romantic part. This Georgette Heyer novel is definitely one of her 5 star novels when considered as a novel and not necessarily as a romance. The comic elements in it never fail to amuse, no matter how many times it is read. It is a funny historical novel set in the regency period of England with just a tad of romance in the end.

A sampler of all Heyer's best skills By truefeather77 The Reluctant Widow is exactly what a book of this type should be: delightful and purely entertaining. The secondary characters in Heyer's best books leap off the page, vivid and hilarious. The plot involves comedy, intrigue, espionage, cloaks & daggers, and things going bump in the night - - served with a sauce of witty repartee that is the Heyer Hallmark. Unforgettable.

I've read several Heyers, many of which are some of my all-time favorite books, but even so I had some misguivings about reading "The Reluctant Widow" since reading the comments here and finding out that it was more focused on mystery than on romance. I decided to read it anyway, not wanting to pass on anything written by Heyer, and I am happy to say I was greatly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book!I loved both the story and the characters, and found myself constantly chuckling over the bizarre situations poor Elinor finds herself every day. The suspense in this book never ceases to keep the reader interested, the humor is always present (keep an eye out for Nicky and his dog, it nearly always kept me in stitches), and the relationship between Carlyon and Elinor is always engaging to read, despite their many differences and her obvious (and understandable) initial dislike of him. The resolution to the mystery was also unexpected... the villian was somebody that certainly commanded my respect, evil and merciless at he was, he was a great character.I also have to say that I disagree with the reviewer who said there was no romance here. It is subtle, but it is always there, I at least had no difficulty in deciphering the reasons behind Carlyon's interest in Elinor's welfare, however intent he was in hiding his sentiments from her. I think he might have fallen in love with her at first sight too, though perhaps he wasn't aware of that until much later... in any case, I greatly enjoyed his bantering with Elinor, perhaps the only female who didn't treat him with the respect and almost reverence he was accustomed to. His declaration of love certainly was no surprise to me, and it was very satisfying. All in all, a definite keeper!

Best Ebook PDF Enoch In the City of Adam (A Coming Flood Book 1), by J. L. Thompson

Enoch, seventh from Adam, began as an unremarkable “lad” with a speech impediment, but rose to the call to help his people in perilous times. Technological implementations and diabolical deceit were destroying the people, their civilization, and the very planet, and Enoch sought feverishly to gather out those who would listen to his message before the end came crashing down on them in planetary upheaval. This first book of A Coming Flood series is titled Enoch in the City of Adam, and chronicles the early years of young Enoch, the seventh from Adam. As a mere “lad” Enoch is not the most obvious choice to lead his people, being smaller and weaker than most of the young men of his village and having a speech impediment that makes him appear weak to many. Nonetheless, Father Adam recognizes in him one who will rise to the call to help his people when perilous times threaten on the horizon. Watchers, fallen angels, demons, giants, raiders, armies and Father Cain create intrigue as darkness hangs an ominous cloud over the land and young Enoch seems destined to take the weight of the troubled world on his narrow shoulders. The boy comes face to face with the reality of evil and employs every mental and spiritual power at his disposal to combat it. This is not your typical Sunday School or Bible Study treatment of the subject matter, but a comprehensive course that includes accounts and histories from several ancient texts, the most reliable of which have contributed to the telling of these antediluvian adventures. The world before the Flood was a cruel, dangerous and sophisticated place to exist. Satan, with his demons, fallen angels and fallen Watchers, meted out knowledge of sin, technology and weaponry with the purpose in mind of destroying God’s children and their planetary home. Sophisticated weaponry and technologies are a constant subject of the ancient texts, and author J.L. Thompson incorporates that unwieldy knowledge into The Coming Flood novel series to demonstrate the global path of destruction pursued for over 1,000 years by those who knew God, but rejected Him and his chosen emissaries.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Well worth reading!! By Rick A. The latest historical fiction novel by J. L. Thompson, “Enoch in the City of Adam,” gives us a glimpse at what the lives of Adam and Eve’s children - and their children’s children - may have been like.Far from mere speculation and conjecture, Thompson has obviously researched the scriptures - ancient, modern, and apocryphal - to pull together a vivid, engaging timeline and story that draws the reader in and engages him in the original struggle between Good and Evil. The reader will be amazed at Thompson’s ability to paint a landscape of characters, locales, and scenarios that are juxtaposed between being amazingly familiar yet strikingly new. He will be amazed at the lengths Thompson went to to gather and extrapolate so much information on a prophet who is only mentioned in one chapter of the Old Testament, yet was so righteous that he “walked with God… and God took him.”

It was okay, as long as you are able to ignore certain inconsistencies. But I was very disappointed in his character development. The only two characters that he bothered to actually delve into were Lady Janet and Mercy Merrick. Everyone else behaved like a caricature of whatever part of society they represented. Grace Roseberry's character was slightly fleshed out in the beginning, but instead of further fleshing her out when he had the opportunity, Collins turned her into a vile woman who apparently had forgotten about the hardships she spoke of in first chapter.Put plainly, this novel requires a great suspension of disbelief. Part of the plot just don't add up. In the beginning, it is discovered that a woman who has stopped breathing for a very long time can be revived. Though her physical health suffers, she's as mentally acute as before. That is downright impossible, to go half an hour without oxygen and suffer no brain damage. Also, he had one character writing another character, but how he could have ever obtained her address or she his is impossible to fathom. They met once, contentiously, then she left the country almost immediately. There was no way he could have even known what country she had gone to. Little things like that bother me, but maybe you can suspend your disbelief better. It might be because Collins couldn't make me like the main character that I'm finding all these reasons to pick the plot apart, but Collins has written better, by far. But, hey, it's free, so take your chances on whether you'll like it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. a good read By pondscum This book is the story of a "fallen woman" who has a chance to make a fresh start in life by assuming the identity of a dead "lady". OK, it's not much of a spoiler to say that she does take the chance.... and that her deceit eventually catches up with her. I thought Collins did a fine character study here and his sympathetic portrayal of the heroine, in contrast to the "lady", was probably controversial at the time this novel was written. The writing and plot construction are good except for a long digression near the end in which the heroine recounts the entire sad story of her childhood and life before the opening of the novel. Recommended.

It's about a young woman named Mercy who assumes the identity of a war-victim in order to make a new start on a troubled and unhappy life. In a time where a good written character is everything, Mercy is able to obtain a job as a companion to a kind old lady by using the dead woman's papers. But is the woman dead? Mercy soon discovers her new start on life may turn into a disaster of broken trust and broken hearts.
