The great increase in the use of furs during the past few decades has caused the fur dressing and dyeing industry to rise from relative insignificance to considerable importance as a branch of applied chemistry. The past eight years, moreover, have witnessed the virtual transference of the leadership in the dressing and dyeing of furs from Europe to America, and in the quality and variety of products, the domestic industry is now in every way the equal of, and in many respects superior to the foreign.

In the spring of 1863, General J.E.B. Stuart is in command of nearly 10,000 Rebel Cavalrymen… In Culpeper Court House, where Salina Hastings now finds herself, it’s hard to believe in spring. Not even an invitation to the Officer’s Ball and the rarity of her betrothed, Jeremy Barnes’, company can take away the deep chill of the icy winter past. Unable to wait on dreams postponed by yet another campaign, Salina makes a reluctant journey north to Pennsylvania, only to find herself caught squarely in the path of two converging armies and a horrifying three-day battle at Gettysburg – a battle that would come to be known as the High Water Mark of the Confederacy. Working side by side with her brother, Ethan, an Assistant Surgeon in the Medical Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia, Salina does all she can to aid the wounded and the dying. Stranded in enemy territory, Salina finds the measure of daring necessary to continue helping her fellow Rebels, but as the armies disperse, she must face a new challenge that will require all the courage she can muster. She must count the personal cost of battle. NOT WITHOUT COURAGE is the engaging drama of a Confederate family’s personal battle for survival, honor, and courage in the midst of one of the fiercest battles in history.

Set in an alternative mid twentieth century England full of fabled beasts and humans with magical abilities, Elves and Escapades is the second in a series of traditional school stories spiced with a dash of magic and a sweet dollop of romance. It's difficult enough being a Senior Prefect, especially when your rival is using magic to break school rules. When some girls at school get a little too close to old, dark magic, Charley finds that there is far more at stake in enforcing school rules than making sure the hockey team doesn't disgrace themselves. When the Christmas holidays change everything between herself and the girl she loves, Charley finds herself taking greater risks to fight for her future--and for the lives of friends and rivals alike. A YA fantasy school story with a sapphic twist.

Growing into its own By Prime customer The first installment in this series successfully established a world of magic and schoolgirls, introduced major characters, and taught the reader about the lives these girls faced. Now the series fleshes out the relationships beyween the girls, looks at their struggles, and begins to develop a longer term tension as protagonist forces come into play. I look forward to seeing this series develop, its quite well done.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Average pastiche By Paperartzy The writing in this story does not have the same attention to detail as pastiches that closely mimic the style of ACD. I found it formulaic with at least one glaring anachronism - Watson supposedly whiling away an afternoon in Llandudno visiting several antique shops and book shops. Curio shops or second hand furniture stores maybe, but antique shops in 1887? I think not. The mystery itself is reasonably well crafted, but overall not one of the best pastiches that I have read.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Don't bother By Ginny J I felt I was reading a rough draft. There were so many wrong word choices, misspellings, punctuation errors, and typos that it was very distracting. Having the story told by Holmes was not well executed. I wasn't always sure who was talking. Even ACD was not very successful in his attempts to do that. The story was interesting enough, but it was not in the style of ACD. I guess it was worth the $.99 for the groans it generated reading through/past all errors.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. ok short story if u get it free By NM Nancy Not much substance. The book was short to begin with, so repeated references to Regent's Park, and Sherlock storing his tobacco in an old Persian slipper seemed like a bad attempt to reach a certain word requirement. But at the same time, there were times when things could have been delved into more, and weren't. All in all, it was free so to me, it was worth the read. Also the word alerted was mistyped as altered. Does anyone proofread anymore?

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A great addition to an amazing series! By Shane jardine Originally posted at www.archeddoorway.comInfinity by Sherrilyn Kenyon was one of my prize discoveries last year, and while every consecutive book in the series has been better than the last, Kenyon has really stepped up her game with Instinct. It turned out to be one of the best YA books I have read in a long time, placing itself up there with the likes of Riordan’s Percy Jackson, or Sanderson’s Reckoners series. In the last year Nick Gautier has had to go through more than anyone has had to deal with. He’s fought of zombified high school football players, learned out to look deep into his future, and had to fight off hordes of ghosts and undead. That’s not to mention the demons and dark gods he has had to fight off or make deals with in the hopes of at least making it through high school. The only reason Nick Gautier has survived this long is because of the help his friends and allies have provided, and the protection of his Dark Hunter boss Kyrian. In Instinct Nick must stand on his own to save save the life of not only himself, but those of his friends and everyone else he holds dear.Instinct was definitely the best book in Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Chronicles of Nick so far. It has everything in it that I love about urban fantasy and YA in general. First and foremost it has a great story, the events of the last five books in the series have been building up to something big and I think Instinct is the beginning of the next major story arc. There is a great cast of characters and they make me love them enough I want to go out and start reading the Dark Hunter series just to read about them in their adult life. The only complaint I have about the book–or any other book in the series really, is that it is way too short and ends on a huge cliff hanger. Just when I am really getting into the book or I am coming to some huge revelation about Nick or his world the book ends. Every damn time. Then I find myself waiting a full year just to find out what happens next, only to find myself left hanging at the end of another book. The anticipation and the waiting is well worth it though, Kenyon hasn’t disappointed me with a book yet.I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Great read, but c'mon By drmrs I love this series. I started on the first book when I was in my early teens, and I ate it up. The problem is, you have to wait a year for each book. This worked for a while, but as a loyal, eager fan, I need more.I read Instinct in less than a day, and it was a great read. After finishing, I decided to poke around Sherrilyn Kenyon's website, already dreaming of the next book. Somewhere along the way, I saw that there is supposed to be a total of FOURTEEN books in the series. This shocked me. Really? I quickly realized what this meant:We're years into this series, and not even halfway done. At this rate, it will be 2023 by the time us loyal fans finally get our grand finale. As an avid reader, it's a lot for me to say that this is one of my favorite series, but it's true. So, after that, I have one thing more thing to say:RELEASE MORE THAN ONE BOOK A YEAR. PLEASEWill I be around in eight long years to have all my Nick related questions answered? I don't know. Hopefully. Will you? Maybe.I'm on my proverbial hands and knees here, praying that either time speeds up, or the author graces us with more releases so that I can get then next book into my hands.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. 100% Worth the read *spoiler free* By CGAB All the characters really grow and develop in this book. Especially Nick. It starts out with a good mystery and keeps you hooked and locked into the story. I started and finished this book in one sitting. It was entirely worth the wait, but I don't know how I'll handle waiting for the next one! Unlike the books in the series this one did not have a very set or secure storyline. You honestly did not know what was going to happen. The revelations are mind boggling and for as many questions are answered new ones are asked. Finally with this book I can really feel a sense of wholeness. The cast of characters, many new, each have such rich and fascinating stories. Many betrayals take place, and they are no the ones you would expect. Sherrilyn Kenyon has a true gift with world and character building. I can't wait for the next installment in this series!

What if a native legend came back to life and was saddened by the destruction of his people, their culture and their environment? What if that legend was the Haida creator god Raven and he spirited away the girl you were falling in love with? What if you didn’t believe in native spiritualism and found yourself battling Raven with only a shaman to help you? Inspired by true events that took place on the Queen Charlotte Islands, Raven's Lament centers on a journalist who investigates a killing tied into the destruction of old-growth forest and becomes tangled up in a spirit war. He finds love and meaning as he encounters a centuries-old Haida prince, formerly imprisoned along with Raven in a rare Golden Spruce tree. "After being stranded twenty kilometers from the nearest road at the tip of Rose Spit, Haida Gwaii, and having to push his spanking new SUV a few kilometers along the beach before the tide came in and we ran out of booze, my first reaction on being asked to write a back cover blurb was, “over my dead body." Some people will do anything to get an endorsement.” Susan Musgrave Review: From the lands and legends of the Haida Gwaii of Northern British Columbia Canada comes a paranormal suspense rich in traditional lore mixed with modern environmental concerns and forgotten taboos. You won't be able to put this one down until you've reached the surprising conclusion. Jude Pittman, author of Healing Spirits, Book 1, Bad Medicine

Brook Grant doubts his own value due to the memories of a verbally abusive father and a failed relationship. A snippet of news catches his eye and he is drawn back to Haida Gwaii, the Queen Charlotte Islands off the north coast of British Columbia. As a reporter Brook has a nose for a story but in following it he meets the beautiful Chelen Davidshaw and her Uncle Charlie, a shaman. The story twists between fact and fiction as easily as the sea mists that drift over the Charlottes.Through the legendary characters of the ancient Haida gods, especially Raven, Brook finally finds the strength within himself that was always there. Does he win the girl? I won't spoil that ending, read Raven's Quest to discover that for yourself.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Heading North By Erika A plot that evolves around native beliefs and legends in Northern British Columbia.Haida Gwaii.A little bit of romance, a little intrigue and of course, more than a little humour. This story has it all. I was on the edge of my seat. After reading this story, I'm looking forward to Mr. Talaber's other book, Shaman's Lure.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Modern Ways Collide with Primitive Myths By Stephanie A. Bridgeman "Ravens Lament" starts with a startling event - the chopping down of a rare 'Golden Spruce.' A misguided environmentalist makes the ironically twisted point: people shouldn't ever cut down trees (by cutting down a sacred tree)!I enjoyed seeing "The Shaman" ('Charlie') and his niece, 'Chelan', appear in the author's other novel: "Shaman's Lure". Next, he had to battle the Raven! Another character, a New York Times reporter ('Brook Grant') keeps the story action flowing, as he follows the trail of broken trees -all the way to Canada. The Golden Spruce was hacked down, like an ordinary pawn, though it had entombed a Prince and a God ('Raven'). The vicious act of chopping apart the Golden Spruce tree freed both (arch enemies for centuries). These two antagonists battled ferociously until the Raven prevailed. Then Raven Trickster caused mayhem, as he roamed among the unsuspecting people.Aging, by the minute, after being 'freed', the Raven searched desperately for the 'Rock of Eternal Life': that was buried in the Golden Spruce with them for "eternity". Brook, the reporter, found and kept the 'all-important' Rock. The Raven tried to trick Brook to give it away since rules didn't allow him to take it! Frank Talaber brings many of the disappearing Indian Myths to life that people in this modern age have forgotten. One of the myths explored in this book: tells us about the mighty 'Raven' who had once opened a giant clamshell, to birth the 'Haidas' Tribe. This action made Raven, first and foremost, the most powerful God in Haidas mythology. When Raven attempts to force the Haidas' people back to their primitive roots, they resist. Their "Raven God" goes berserk, and it takes 'all hands on deck' to battle him.I found the author's use of the words from the Haida language gives an authenticity to the book: showing his painstaking research. It was interesting to me, that a romance developed (with Chelan and Brook) amidst all the turmoil. I thought it was hilarious the way Charlie, the Shaman was described: he supposedly has God-like powers but suffers from 'lactose intolerance!' I was touched when I sensed the author's profound reverence for trees; especially when I read his descriptions of the 'sobbing trees' as they were axed down. This novel has the ring of an epic "Lord of the Rings" journey -this is one journey that I'll always remember!

My name is Julio Ramirez Jr. and baseball is my whole life. Since he was ten, Julio has lived in the shadow of his famous father.  Not just because Julio Senior is a pitcher for the Miami Marlins, but because he fled Cuba to play professional baseball, leaving his Julio and his mother and sister branded as the family of a traitor.  Now sixteen, Julio dreams of playing for Cuba’s national team—until he finds out his father's defection may destroy his chances.  When he’s given the opportunity to flee Cuba, he has to make the toughest choice of his life.  Can he abandon his family, just like his Papi did?  Will freedom be worth the perilous journey and risking prison if he’s caught?  Will his Papi be waiting for him on the other shore—or, with the Marlins in the World Series against the Yankees, has Julio Senior forgotten about his son?  Set against the backdrop of the Series on which everything depends, Game Seven is a suspenseful story of loyalty, survival, and baseball.

Game Seven, by Paul Volponi

From School Library Journal Gr 6–9—Julio Ramirez, Jr., son of a former Cuban national baseball hero known as El Fuego, is an outstanding player in his own right. He dreams of making the Cuban national junior team, but is viewed with suspicion because of his father's defection to the United States several years before. Julio's feelings toward his father are conflicted: he is proud of the older man's success in the American major leagues, but feels abandoned, as he, his sister, and his mother remain in poverty in Cuba while El Fuego enjoys the benefits of his multimillion dollar contract with the Florida Marlins. Unbeknownst to Julio, his father has made arrangements for him, his uncle, and his cousin to escape the island with the help of a guide named Gabriel. By means of a retrofitted '59 Buick, the four make the harrowing journey from Cuba to Miami, even as El Fuego is playing a starring role in the World Series. Arriving in the U.S., the group is put up in a luxury apartment, but much to Julio's disappointment, his father does not make an appearance. In a turn of events that stretches credulity, Julio is spirited into the Marlins's clubhouse by an ESPN reporter just before the beginning of the final game of the Series. He and his father discuss family issues as the game progresses. While their reunion is moving and appropriately equivocal, sports-savvy youngsters may find the prospect of a teenager chatting up his dad in the bullpen during game seven of the World Series a little difficult to swallow. VERDICT With its short chapters and simple vocabulary, the novel moves along briskly and would be a good fit for reluctant readers with a taste for baseball and adventure.—Richard Luzer, Fair Haven Union High School, VT

Paul Volponi once again writes an exceptional, edge-of-your-seat, page-turner!I've only attended a 1/2 dozen baseball games in my life, but this book made me fall in love with the game. That's brilliance. The intense action and fast pace is perfect for reluctant readers, and the subject matter will appeal to boys, but is certainly accessible to and will hold the interest of girls.Paul Volponi is an exceptional writer who creates scenes so realistic that you'll feel the boat rocking and tumbling, the heat pounding, and a baseball smacking right into your glove. Get ready to escape Cuba in a '59 Buick car converted into a boat, catch a baseball at 101 mph, steal a base, kiss the Miami beach as you reach freedom. FREEDOM, I realize, that many of us Americans so easily take for granted. This is a novel is SO MUCH MORE THAN BASEBALL! It's about a family in Cuba left behind by their father and husband, who defected to the United States while playing for Cuba's national team. For six years the family suffers without Julio Sr., living in poverty, barely making ends meet. Julio Sr,, aka El Fuego, is living the high life as a relief pitcher for the Miami Marlins, a source of pain and pride for young Julio aka Junior. The younger Julio plays baseball too. Coached by his uncle and cheered on by his cousin, a fellow teammate, Julio is a remarkably gifted ballplayer clearly following in his father's footsteps. But being El Fuego's son has its huge disadvantages, making life painfully difficult. When an incredible opportunity comes to Julio and his family to leave Cuba as defectors/traitors, each person has to decide what they want to do.There are many surprises and tear-jerk moments in this novel. The descriptions, especially about life in Cuba are so vivid that readers will have no problem envisioning the scenes and understand the antiquated life most Cubans live. (The exception: government officials.) The action is intense and I couldn't read fast enough to find out what was going to happen next, often what was unexpected.I can't recommend this novel enough. It's a must read, even if you can't stand baseball. It's a must for every library. This is the novel that will keep the attention of those who LOVE SPORTS and HATE TO READ. GAME SEVEN is a game changer in that department.Without a doubt, this novel is just one more in a line of outstanding novels by Paul Volponi that solidifies his title as the King of Urban YA Fiction.

I really cannot recommend this book to anyone, except perhaps a reluctant reader who loves baseball. I used to cover Major League Baseball, so I know the game well, too bad the author does not seem to share my knowledge of the game or my attention to detail. There were too many cliches and too many plot elements involving baseball that simply would not happen. Reporters cannot sneak people into stadiums and clubhouses. You need a credential, and there is a photo on the credential.

Reading is not his favorite thing, so whenever I pick a book for him that he likes, I feel like mom of the year. It's a great choice for baseball fans. I'll be scanning this author's books for more titles.

The Beasts of Tarzan, by Edgar Rice Burroughs

Review After Tarzan s son is kidnapped, Tarzan and Jane are lured into a dangerous trap that separates them. In their desperate search for each other and for their son, they are drawn deep into the dangerous African jungle, where the evil schemes of Tarzan's enemies Rokoff and Paulvitch threaten them at every step. The ape-man must draw on all of his animal strength and all of his human intelligence (as well as the help of the beasts of the jungle) to try to reunite his family in safety. --From the Publisher

About the Author Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) is the creator of Tarzan, one of the most popular fictional characters of all time, and John Carter, hero of the Barsoom science fiction series. Burroughs was a prolific author, writing almost 70 books before his death in 1950, and was one of the first authors to popularize a character across multiple media, as he did with Tarzan s appearance in comic strips, movies, and merchandise. Residing in Hawaii at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbour in 1941, Burroughs was drawn into the Second World War and became one of the oldest war correspondents at the time. Edgar Rice Burroughs s popularity continues to be memorialized through the community of Tarzana, California, which is named after the ranch he owned in the area, and through the Burrough crater on Mars, which was named in his honour.

I just started to read about the adventures of Tarzan and can barely put the books down. Edgar Rice Burrougs is an amazing author. "The Beasts of Tarzan" is no exception. After Jane and their son Jack are kidnapped, Tarzan has to return to the jungle. Once more he has to rely on his wits and his above-human strength and physique to survive in the jungle. Making several new friend (not all of them human) he has to track down Jane, his son and the men who captured them."The Beasts of Tarzan" is an excellent adventure story and well worth the read.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The bad guys make the mistake of kidnapping Jane and son By Lawrance Bernabo "The Beasts of Tarzan" is the third novel about the Lord of the Jungle by Edgar Rice Burroughs. "The Beasts of Tarzan" finds the ape lord settled in civilized London as Lord Greystoke. But he becomes the target of his enemy, Nikolas Rokoff, and his henchman Alexis Paulvitch. The pair abducts Tarzan's Jane and their infant son Jack. Tarzan ends up stranded on a desert island, but with the help of Sheeta the panther and Akut the great ape he makes it back to the mainland. There he meets Mugambi, the giant chief of he Wagambi tribe, a character who goes on to become Tarzan's lifelong friend and ally (a welcome relief after the way virtually all of the natives were just a different sort of jungle animal for Tarzan to torment and kill). This odd group heads off together after the kidnappers into the deep jungle and when Tarzan finds them he lets his inner beast come up with creative ways of making them pay for the mistake of taking his wife and son. If you start reading the Tarzan novels in particular, or the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs in general, in the same order that they were written, then "The Beasts of Tarzan" is pretty much around the time that it becomes clear that the storyline is usually the same. Our hero is separated from the woman he loves and spends most of the book getting her back. You can throw a baby into the mix, change the impediments placed in the way, or alter the locale from Africa to Mars, Pellucidar or the Land That Time Forgot (far and away the best part of the recipe), but the basic plot remains the same. Burroughs was also getting tired of having to write about Tarzan, which he would prove in the next book in the series, "The Son of Tarzan," where baby Jack grows up to become Korak the Killer. Unfortunately there were more than twenty more Tarzan novels to come, which would rely more and more of a formulaic approach.

7 of 9 people found the following review helpful. ride or die By jib n. smith I like tarzan books. This one was great as well. Tarzan finally got to see some of his enemies die, which was satisfying for me. Also, I enjoyed the "lord of nature" aspect of the book. Anyone that can control a pack of apes and a panther is pretty cool. After I read this book, I just wanted to fight another animal to the death. After I killed it, I would stand above it with the blood running down my throat and scream like tarzan does. I recommend this book for any father who is worried his son might grow up to be weak. Once again, great book.

Martin Hewitt solves a series of baffling crimes in this thrilling installment of the adventures of London’s cleverest detective An artist’s work is vindictively vandalized, and the artist is found murdered in his smoking room. Gold bullion totaling £10,000 mysteriously vanishes from the ill-fated steamship Nicobar as it sinks en route to Plymouth. A clerk disappears from a large London bank along with a rather substantial amount of the company’s money. A lunatic Frenchman, discovered beaten and bloody in the street, screams in terror when offered a loaf of bread. These dark occurrences have two things in common: The obvious solutions are not the solutions, and private detective Martin Hewitt is on the case. Not even the fabled Sherlock Holmes can best Hewitt’s talent for disguise and his ability to uncover the small, telling clues missed by others. Narrated by his good friend Mr. Brett, the investigative chronicles of Martin Hewitt are entertaining exercises in the fine art of deductive reasoning. This ebook features a new introduction by Otto Penzler and has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

I won't attempt to review Mr Morrison's writing skill but I will caution that the Martin Hewitt story collections listed on Amazon (and elsewhere) show overlap of content and some cases of multiple titles for the same collection. Before selecting a collection, be sure to look at the table of contents to see whether you might already have the stories in another collection.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An Excellent Mystery Short Story Collection By Fantasyman Just finished reading this, liked it very much. The stories in this collection run the gamut from murder and theft to anarchists and disappearances. These stories have stood the test of time very well, published almost a century ago, they still have the ability to hold the reader's interest.Arthur Morrison's detective, Marin Hewitt, does seem to have a touch of Sherlock Holmes in him; he is very observant, keeps his solutions to the mystery to himself until he has proved his theory, and solves the mysteries he tackles with a certain flair. On the other hand, Martin Hewitt doesn't have the obsessive idiosyncrasies of Sherlock Holmes; he is not addicted to cocaine, has no obsession with music, and doesn't go into a blue funk when there is no intriguing mystery to challenge his intellect. Quite the contrary, Mr. Hewitt maintains a perfectly respectable business in private investigations, even to the extent of having an office and a clerk. Martin Hewitt seems to be a perfectly normal person with an abnormally keen insight into investigations. Of the two, Holmes would certainly make the far more interesting character study, yet, Hewitt seems somehow to be more real and less of an artifact of the imagination, if it is possible to say such a thing about a fictional character. For free on Kindle, it would be a crime not to nab this collection.

18 of 18 people found the following review helpful. The Original Mean Streets By James Paris "Down these mean streets a man must go," wrote Raymond Chandler on the subject of the detective novel. Few knew he was paying tribute to another writer, now almost forgotten, who wrote about the mean streets of London's Docks around 1900. In TALES OF MEAN STREETS, CHILD OF THE JAGO, and THE HOLE IN THE WALL, Arthur Morrison wrote about the world into which he was born. (Interestingly, he also wrote some great detective novels at the same time that Doyle was writing his Sherlock Holmes stories.) Some of the stories in TALES OF MEAN STREETS seem sentimental today: There is no lurid sex, the cursing is subject to the "code" of Queen Victoria's day, and much of the violence takes place off stage. If you accept the givens of that day, you will enjoy Morrison; and you will see how the American detective novel and the film noir owe far more to Morrison than to Conan Doyle or anyone else. Morrison deserved to be remembered and honored.

The Great Impersonation by E. Phillips Oppenheim. Brand New Copy. The Great Impersonation is a mystery novel written by E. Phillips Oppenheim and published in 1920. German Leopold von Ragastein meets his doppelganger, Englishman Everard Dominey, in Africa, and plans to murder him and steal his identity in order to spy on English high society just prior to World War I. However, doubts of the returned Dominey’s true identity begin to arise in this tale of romance, political intrigue, and a (literally) haunting past. The story begins in German East Africa, where Englishman Everard Dominey awakens to his doppelganger host, German Leopold von Ragastein. They spend the night drinking and sharing their dark pasts. The next day, Leopold and Dr. Schmidt hatch a plan to make Everard disappear in the wilderness, thereby allowing Leopold to steal his identity and fulfill his special commission for the German government. In London, Everard seems very different from his peers, but is so familiar with his own past that he is accepted back. Unfortunately, his wife, Lady Rosamund Dominey, is still insane, and still thinks that Everard killed Roger Unthank, who disappeared just before Everard left and has not been seen since. Princess Stephanie Eiderstrom recognizes Everard as Leopold immediately, and threatens to reveal him if he does not meet with her later. Everard speaks with Mr. Seaman and reveals that Leopold killed a Hungarian prince, the husband of his lover the Princess Eiderstrom, which is why he was banished to Africa. He sends Seaman to the princess and lets her know that they cannot be together until he is done being Everard. Seaman, in turn, informs him that his true mission in England is to keep an eye on Ambassador Terniloff. Princess Eiderstrom informs Terniloff of Leopold’s true identity. The Prince means to ensure that Leopold is a spy for peace, not warfare, and he assures the Prince that the former is true.

By A Customer I first read The Great Impersonation twenty-five years ago and the memory of that first reading still keeps me breathless each time I reread this masterful story. The characters are well drawn (although they are typical of the genre - Pre-WWI, English upper class, and "foreign" royalty), the pace is swift, and the plot is both simple and ingenious. Although I consider myself savvy when it comes to "thrillers", Oppenheim kept me in great suspense until the very last page. In subsequent years, I have read as many of Oppenheim's books and stories as I can get my hands on - about a dozen, obtained from used book stores - (he wrote hundreds - practically all of which are out of print), and these certainly vary in quality, but I can state, unequivocally, that The Great Impersonation is his best, and, in fact, one of the best stories of all time.

By JAD This is the best of the many novels - over 180 - mostly international spy thriller type novels - which E P Oppenheim wrote from the Edwardian era into the 1940s. British writer Oppenheim was wildly popular - as popular as James Patterson is today. The reading public could not get enough of his books. They are still very good yarns by the man who has been called "The Prince of Storytellers".In "The Great Impersonation", Oppenheim's plot hinges around two very similar looking gentlemen, one from Britain and the other from Germany. To make matters more challenging, they happen to be related. The reader is kept in suspense. Is the one masquerading as the other in order to undermine the rival nation? Are these suspicions founded or groundless?International intrigue is the game, and the twist has to do with the protagonist of the story. Then again, perhaps the protagonist is the antagonist? It is up to the reader to try to figure it out.Of course there is romance! Oppenheim always includes romance. Imagine the poor woman the man comes home to--is she really welcoming her long lost husband, or is it the cousin / enemy / imposter? She has her doubts, as do we. And there are rather shady characters of all kinds to keep the mystery going! This is a great story, as other reviewers have noted, about possible mistaken identity or shall we say identity theft. How contemporary and timely! Snap it up and read it.The slapdash reader might want to compare this book with the great works of literature, and that would be a mistake. Although he was British, Oppenheim was NOT a Dickens or Austen; read them if you want that kind of a story. Oppenheim was, however, a good writer who treated his readers to a plot that unfolded deftly, set in sophisticated, glamorous locales. Yes, Oppenheim was a product of his era and nationality-and sometimes those prejudices show through, but knowing that, the reader can proceed without allowing them to become unpleasant intrusions. This and the others of his books are good for reading on the porch or beach on a lazy day, on a plane or train trip, or if you want to read a chapter before bedtime and actually remember what you read the next day. The storylines are easy to follow, the people have enough characterization to give you a mental picture of them, and now, with the distance of time, the books evoke an entire era. With the elegant settings and cultured, but idiosyncratic characters, one wonders why some enterprising Hollywood producer has not made a recent film of this book? It would benefit from a "Tea with Mussolini" type cast, score and camerawork. (It was filmed, in the early days of sound, but it deserves a blockbuster treatment). One of the readers says it reminds one of Agatha Christie. As a matter of fact, as reported by Christie scholars, E P Oppenheim was Miss Christie's chief role model when she began writing.A friend of F Scott Fitzgerald, P G Wodehouse, and many other luminaries, E P Oppenheim frequented Monte Carlo, in which several of his best tales are set. But no matter the setting, they were always peopled with crowned heads traveling incognito, dubious anarchists, world class financiers, powerful generals, cabaret dancers, card sharps and shady international beauties - all thrown together in cafe society intrigue that hints at the possibility that much of this is...about real people E P knew, thinly veiled as fiction.Of course, that is exactly what it is!A note to parents of teens-If your son or daughter has an interest in Harry Potter books you could dangle a few Oppenheims in their direction. They have all the thrills and there is no need to be concerned about gratuitous language or situations. These are just good stories well told.If you read this one, and like it, find and read my personal favorite "The Prodigals of Monte Carlo" next. It is about a man who has everything, who is given only a few months to live by his Harley Street physician. He asks his three best friends, leaders in various professions, what they would do, given such a death sentence-and then acts on some of their suggestions. Intelligent indulgence and altruism meet in a story that has Oppenheim's usual mix of romance and intrigue. If you find this review helpful, please take a look at some of my other reviews ranging from fiction, biography, history and religion to art and architecture. Happy reading!

Although a rather just-state-the-facts author, Oppenheim created a delightful story by doing just that: weaving facts into a web that cannot be deciphered until the final chapter. He led the reader through a seemingly straightforward spy novel, only dropping hints at what was to come. This is a great read for anyone who likes their classics served with a twist.

I really liked the setting, the nods to Jane Austen, and the mystery in general. The plot was very well done; I was very invested in unraveling it, and had no suspicions or theories as to true motives of any of the characters. However, a lot of William's and Abigail's actions didn't sit well with me. I'm not an authority on 19th century propriety by any means, unless a solid love of Jane Austen's work and a tendency to immerse myself in regency period novels makes me an expert. But I just couldn't see a devoted man of the cloth or a well-bred lady doing the things that they did. I mean, Lydia Bennet would, but she brought shame down on anyone with a teaspoon's worth of sense. Frequently inviting a man into your bedchamber, being alone with said man in said bedchamber, coming upon a half naked man and then staying to chat, the super forward flirtatious remarks, the sensuous lingering touches- these are all commonplace and accepted today, but 200 years ago? Not so much. Definitely not without consequences. I was frequently disappointed in both of them. How often William risked her reputation. If he really cared for her and/or if he had integrity, he wouldn't have trifled with her, but would have taken the utmost care to treat her like a lady and preserve her good name.

It has all the things I love - the Regency time period, a mystery, realistic characters, a great plot, wonderful writing, and the inability to put the story down. Lately the books I have read have made me wonder where all the great fiction ran off to, but with this story I have hope for more great books again. :-)When Abigail Foster's family loses most of their money from a bad investment, Abigail decides to give up her dowry so her sister can still have her season in London. As she looks around for a cheaper, smaller house to rent, she begins to doubt they will find one acceptable to everyone. But then a chance comes for a nice estate to rent very cheaply. The only catch is that it hasn't been inhabited for almost twenty years and nobody will say why. When Abigail and her father arrive at Pembrooke Park, they are shocked at the state of the house. Everything is left just as it was twenty years ago even with the dishes still on the tea table. But why? When Abigail hears the rumors swirling around of a treasure hidden somewhere in Pembrooke Park, she hopes to find it to reimburse her depleted dowry. As she settles in the house by herself, she becomes friends with William, the curate, and his sister, Leah. Abigail starts to hang out with them a lot and begins to admire the curate. But then her first love and best friend, Gilbert, visits her new neighborhood leaving Abigail confused and flustered. Gilbert seems to want to be with her, but what about William? This story was sooo good! I loved how well everything came together at the end. So many little details you had to pay attention to with multiple stories and mysteries all swirling around the one big mystery. It was a fun read with some holding your breath moments, a little unpredictability, and some rooting for the guy you think she should have. ;-) I really liked Abigail. She is very smart, has a sweet spirit, and a lot of determination to figure out the secrets shrouding the estate. The parson was another great character. He was very giving and caring just how you would want a pastor to be. Thankfully, he wasn't at all like the parson in Pride and Prejudice. hahaIf you have never read anything from this author before, definitely try this one! You won't be disappointed. :-)I was given this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

One of her better books By MrsFordy I'm probably spoiled with Julie Klassen's books because they are SO good that none of the other ones ever seem quite as good as the FIRST book of hers you've read. That being said, I was really disappointed with last year's The Dancing Master. The Secret of Pembrooke Park was EONS better than the last book, and even if you thought you'd figured out the mystery, you were still left guessing up until the end. Without getting into spoilers, I thought the main characters were very 3 dimensional, definitely imperfect, made stupid decisions out of anger, fear, pride, etc, and that's what also makes them really likeable. We forget sometimes that people in the pulpit are just as human as the people in the pews. I really appreciated that Klassen made the curate relatable rather than Austen's Mr. Collins or Mr. Elton who were such stuffed shirt prigs. Book was very well done. The only real deviation that I see from the previous books is that usually the author has sort of a focus of Regency Era life, along with quotes from various source material before each chapter. I'm not really sure if she was attempting to paint the life of a local clergyman or steward, because it wasn't front and center as part of the novel. It was the profession of our male protagonist, but I don't feel like I necessarily learned something new about the profession from reading the book. With the previous novels, it feels like you come away with a history lesson as well as a happy ending. We still got our happy ending (duh), but I did miss that a bit from Klassen's previous novels. Still very enjoyable though, I read the book in one night, and I will definitely read again.
