Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography A gunman agrees to do a rich man’s dirty work in this classic Western from one of the genre’s early masters. Donnegan is not proud of his past. But when words ran dry and matters could only be settled with a gun, he never hesitated to make things right. Now fate has led him to The Corner, a wide-open gold-mining town in the valley where two rivers join. An invalid by the name of Colonel Macon wants Donnegan to settle a long-standing land claim that’s been taken over by outlaws. Charmed by the colonel’s beautiful daughter, the gunman agrees. But nothing is as it seems in The Corner, where the line separating good from evil is so badly blurred it might not be there at all. A contemporary of Zane Grey and a major influence on Louis L’Amour, Max Brand was a true master of the Western. Gunman’s Reckoning is a fine example of the moral complexity, fluid prose, and nonstop action that defines the best of his work.

It's a tale of a tough guy who gets involved with an evil man with an angel daughter for whom the tough guy falls. His efforts to recover hers and her father's gold mine claims is the story. Not a lot of shoot em up but enough story to make one want to finish the bookto see how things work out.

Silver Voyage (Johnny Donohue Adventures Book 6), by Sandy Mason

From the Inside Flap 'Silver Voyage' is Sandy Mason's latest book - released in March 2015.   'Silver Voyage' is a fictional story based upon the wartime service of Alan Turing - the brilliant British mathematician. As the story unfolds, Turing's actions and those of his assistant, have ramifications leading to events in modern times.    Both men are working feverishly to reduce the number of casualties in World War II. Their well intentioned contributions to science become a source of greed and murder.   The main character in 'Silver Voyage' is modeled after William Higinbotham, a great mathematician in his own right. Higinbotham, like Turing, contributed greatly to the war effort. Their dedication saved hundreds of thousands of lives.   Alan Turing's actual life is depicted in the movie, 'The Imitation Game'. The movie provides an excellent view into wartime England, in particular the environment which surrounded the code breakers. Turing himself committed suicide at age 41 after being hounded by the British government for his gay life style. He laced an apple with cyanide, took a few bites and ended his tormented life.   The portion of 'Silver Voyage' detailing Alan Turing is, for the most part, pure fiction. There is evidence that Turing hid some silver bars during the war which were never found. 'Silver Voyage' is the mostly fictional story of what happened to that silver.   Sandy Mason's favorite character Johnny Donohue is called upon to find the hidden silver and protect the reputation of top atomic scientist  'Willie' Haggerty. He must unravel a modern day murder and save his childhood sweetheart, Jane Haggerty, from international criminals. Johnny is playing a difficult game competing against a sea of professionals who will stop at nothing to walk off with secret Nazi treasure.

Dodo Collections brings you another classic from Arthur Quiller-Couch, ‘Brother Copas.’To those who are acquainted with the literary standing of “Q” the lightness and slightness of his novels always come as a surprise. They have, however, a distinctive touch of learning here and there and a fair and elegant style. The setting in the present case is easily identified as the Hospital of St. Cross at Winchester, although Sir Quiller-Couch confusingly calls his town Merchester suggesting Melchester, the name given by Mr. Hardy to the cathedral town of Salisbury. The dissensions and difficulties in this community of noble poverty, the great unsettled question of high church or low church, and the final solution by means of that charity which covers a multitude of sins is the theme of rother Copas. There is a delightful Swinburnian translation of a late Latin poem-the sort of thing that Sir Quiller-Couch does con amore. There is a town pageant which brings peace after dissension and there is a perfectly unreal and perfectly impossible but equally charming American child. But, on the whole, there is enough background and enough setting, enough learning, and enough ease of writing to make the whole book very readable and pleasant for an idle half-hour. If this is the only way in which Sir Quiller-Couch can earn the liberty to do his literary studies we pardon his novels.Quiller-Couch was a noted literary critic, publishing editions of some of Shakespeare’s plays (in the New Shakespeare, published by Cambridge University Press, with Dover Wilson) and several critical works, including Studies in Literature (1918) and On the Art of Reading (1920). He edited a successor to his verse anthology: Oxford Book of English Prose, which was published in 1923. He left his autobiography, Memories and Opinions, unfinished; it was nevertheless published in 1945.

Considered one of Willa Cather’s best works. It is the final book of her “prairie trilogy” of novels, preceded by O Pioneers! and The Song of the Lark. The novel tells the stories of an orphaned boy from Virginia, Jim Burden, and the elder daughter in a family of Bohemian immigrants, Ántonia Shimerda, who are each brought to be pioneers in Nebraska towards the end of the 19th century, as children. Both the pioneers who first break the prairie sod for farming, as well as of the harsh but fertile land itself, feature in this American novel. The first year in the very new place leaves strong impressions in both children, affecting them lifelong. This novel is considered as Cather’s first masterpiece. Cather was praised for bringing the American West to life and making it personally interesting.

My Antonia, by Willa Cather

Amazon.com Review It seems almost sacrilege to infringe upon a book as soulful and rich as Willa Cather's My Ántonia by offering comment. First published in 1918, and set in Nebraska in the late 19th century, this tale of the spirited daughter of a Bohemian immigrant family planning to farm on the untamed land ("not a country at all but the material out of which countries are made") comes to us through the romantic eyes of Jim Burden. He is, at the time of their meeting, newly orphaned and arriving at his grandparents' neighboring farm on the same night her family strikes out to make good in their new country. Jim chooses the opening words of his recollections deliberately: "I first heard of Ántonia on what seemed to be an interminable journey across the great midland plain of North America," and it seems almost certain that readers of Cather's masterpiece will just as easily pinpoint the first time they heard of Ántonia and her world. It seems equally certain that they, too, will remember that moment as one of great light in an otherwise unremarkable trip through the world.

Ántonia, who, even as a grown woman somewhat downtrodden by circumstance and hard work, "had not lost the fire of life," lies at the center of almost every human condition that Cather's novel effortlessly untangles. She represents immigrant struggles with a foreign land and tongue, the restraints on women of the time (with which Cather was very much concerned), the more general desires for love, family, and companionship, and the great capacity for forbearance that marked the earliest settlers on the frontier.

As if all this humanity weren't enough, Cather paints her descriptions of the vastness of nature--the high, red grass, the road that "ran about like a wild thing," the endless wind on the plains--with strokes so vivid as to make us feel in our bones that we've just come in from a walk on that very terrain ourselves. As the story progresses, Jim goes off to the University in Lincoln to study Latin (later moving on to Harvard and eventually staying put on the East Coast in another neat encompassing of a stage in America's development) and learns Virgil's phrase "Optima dies ... prima fugit" that Cather uses as the novel's epigraph. "The best days are the first to flee"--this could be said equally of childhood and the earliest hours of this country in which the open land, much like My Ántonia, was nothing short of a rhapsody in prairie sky blue. --Melanie Rehak

From School Library Journal Grade 7 Up--In Jim Burden's accounting of his life with, and without, Antonia Shimerda, listeners are transported to the hardscrabble Nebraska prairie and the rural immigrant experience. When Jim first sees the Shimerda family, immigrants from Bohemia, disembarking from the same train that is taking him West to live with his grandparents, he has no idea the impact they will have on his life. Nostalgically, he remembers the good and bad times they had on their respective farms and creates his portrait of Antonia, an independent and tough survivor. The brief biography of author Willa Cather at the beginning of the CD explains how her life mirrors Antonia's life in many ways, helping listeners understand the context of the story. Patrick Lawlor's rich, fluid voice lends an air of sophistication to Burden, reinforcing the class structure inherent at the beginning of the 20th century. Lawlor's attempts to create voices for the characters often falls flat. Since the novel is Burden's reminiscence, it would have been better told in Burden's voice alone. Since My Antonia continues to be a staple in many English curriculums, this is a good audiobook for schools and public libraries to have available.--Lynn Evarts, Sauk Prairie High School, Prairie du Sac, WA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. 181 of 193 people found the following review helpful. Some memories are realities By D. Cloyce Smith When Willa Cather was writing "My Antonia," she visited her friend, the journalist and war correspondent Elizabeth Sergeant, grabbed an old apothecary jar filled with flowers, set it in the center of an antique table, and explained: "I want my new heroine to be like this--like a rare object in the middle of a table, which one may examine from all sides. . . . I want her to stand out--like this--like this--because she is the story."This anecdote (recounted in James Woodress's biography of Cather) sums up almost exactly the technique that makes her novel both unique and unusual. Instead of writing the story from her heroine's point of view, or from the point of view of an omniscient narrator, Cather instead creates a bystander, the likeable and somewhat innocent Jim Burden, who has written down a series of memories where his and Antonia's lives intersect; "My Antonia" is a biography through the mask of autobiography. While this is Jim's story as much as it is Antonia's (she is barely mentioned at all in Book III), we are ultimately studying a much-loved thing of beauty from "all sides"--from the distance separating it and the observer.Although "My Antonia" relates a number of exciting, sentimental, horrifying, and even scandalous incidents (none of which will be divulged here), Cather very deliberately chose to write a character novel rather than an action story. Many of the book's pivotal "events" happen offstage; we learn what has happened only when Jim hears about Antonia or runs into her at a gathering or stops by her home. Such a detached approach is a departure from that used by many of the American naturalists (e.g., Dreiser, Lewis) writing during this period, yet her book is surely a model of realism. As Jim writes when he notes his reluctance to visit Antonia when they are both grown, "Some memories are realities, and are better than anything that can ever happen to one again."As with all of Cather's novels, the prairie town of Black Hawk (which, is of course, Cather's hometown of Red Cloud), is populated with a variety of hirelings and homesteaders, dreamers and pretenders, romantics and scoundrels. (Cather seldom sketched a character as downright wicked as the would-be rapist Wick Cutter.) But none of the townsfolk outshine either the affectionate, if platonic, rapport between Jim and Antonia or the unforgettable portrayal of Antonia herself.

Brick When I went to write the review of Cather's work, I was surprised to find that most of the reviews were written by high school students who were required to read the book. The strengths of "My Antonia", in my opinion, would not be obvious to most teenagers. Taken at face value, as a fictional story of the struggles of Bohemian immigrants to the mid-west, the story has merits which probably underlie its popularity among secondary teachers. However, that is not what makes this book special. Simply put, both the characters and setting of this novel are beautiful. Cather clearly loved the land she was writing about, and her passion for the farm country of her youth flowed through her writings. Her narrator, Jim, reveals the life of the immigrant Antonia, his childhood friend. Though most of the book is about their childhood together, it is written from Jim's view as an adult. This is tremendously important, as Jim's observations are clearly bear a mark of maturity that would be out-of-place if the book were written from the point-of-view of a child. Perhaps this is what many teenagers miss. Few of them have experienced the profound bittersweet feelings adults have when looking back upon their youth. These emotions were entwined through the novel from beginning to end, forming a scaffold upon which the story was told. To miss them is to miss everything that makes this novel great, rather than just historical fiction.

82 of 90 people found the following review helpful. Antonia, "who seemed to mean to us the country, the conditions, the whole adventure of our childhood." By Jana L.Perskie In 1882, when author Willa Cather was nine years-old, her family left their home in Back Creek Valley, Virginia, and moved to Nebraska, near the settler country in Red Cloud where they farmed a homestead. Ms. Cather, often thought of as a chronicler of the pioneer American West, frequently drew on her memories of prairie culture and her own personal experiences. She wrote about the themes closest to her heart. Of primary importance was the drama of the immigrant struggling to survive in a new world, epitomized here in "My Antonia." In this extraordinary novel, Miss Cather weaves together the story of Antonia Shimerda, an immigrant girl from Bohemia who represents the optimism, determination and pure grit that newcomers to America needed to make a successful life, and that of American-born Jim Burden, our narrator.Burden, a successful and cultured East-coast lawyer, is returning to his childhood home in Blackhawk, Nebraska for a visit. On the long train ride, he reminisces with an unnamed friend about the place where they had both grown up and about the people they knew - especially their dear friend Antonia, "who seemed to mean to us the country, the conditions, the whole adventure of our childhood."When young Jim Burden was orphaned at age ten, he left his native Virginia to live with his grandparents on their farm, just outside of Blackhawk. At almost the same time that Jim arrived, the Shimerda family settled on their land. Mrs. Shimerda had argued effectively for a move to America so that the children, especially Ambrosch, the eldest son, would have the chance to make a better life for themselves, with more possibilities of moving up in the social hierarchy and of acquiring wealth. The Bohemian newcomers were the Burden's closest neighbors. Fourteen year-old Antonia Shimerda, the eldest daughter became a close friend of Jim's. He was immediately drawn to her warmth and friendliness. When Antonia's father, a sensitive, refined man, discovered that Jim was educated he asked the boy to teach his daughter to speak English. "Te-e-ach, te-e-ach my Án-tonia!" he told/asked Mrs. Burden. Together the two young people worked the land and explored the glorious prairie. And Antonia began to learn English.Unfortunately, Antonia's studies came to an end with her father's tragic suicide. The man missed his native land terribly and was not able to accept his family's extreme poverty or the demands of his wife and son. When he lost his only friends, he sunk into a deep depression from which he was not able to escape. After Mr. Shimerda's death, Antonia had to work even harder, performing the heaviest, most physically demanding chores, just to keep the farm from going under. She was not able to go to school with Jim, and began to slowly lose the refined ways she had learned from her dad.The author describes Antonia's life as Jim perceives it, and from information he gathers from others about the long periods when he did not have contact with her. Their widely different positions in society dictated their life choices and their fortunes. And their lives, their personal histories, parallel the changes and the transformation of the Great Plains. When Antonia and Jim explored the Nebraskan wilderness, it was a wilderness as far as the eye could see. "There seemed to be nothing to see; no fences, no creeks or trees, no hills or fields. If there was a road, I could not make it out in the faint starlight. There was nothing but land: not a country at all, but the material out of which countries are made. No, there was nothing but land--slightly undulating..." And, "I had the feeling that the world was left behind, that we had got over the edge of it, and were outside man's jurisdiction. I had never before looked up at the sky when there was not a familiar mountain ridge against it. But this was the complete dome of heaven, all there was of it." When Jim makes his return trip by train, years later, everything had changed.Willa Cather's prose is straightforward, the narrative is deceptively simple and crystal clear. Her characters are complex and the wonderful, richly textured descriptions of the landscape and life on the plains make reading the novel pure pleasure. The author also captures the interior landscape of her characters with great perception and sensitivity. This is a great work of fiction which depicts a people, and a place in time, which only remain on the pages of a book, preserved vividly by Willa Cather.I prefer to purchase Enriched Classics fiction whenever available. I find they offer readers more affordable editions of great works of literature with supplementary critical text. "My Antonia" contains: a concise introduction by Editor Cynthia Brantley Johnson that gives readers important background information; a chronology of Willa Cather's life and work; a timeline of significant events that provides the book's historical context; an outline of key themes and plot points; detailed explanatory notes; critical analysis, including contemporary and modern perspectives of "My Antonia;" discussion questions ideal for book club conversations; a recommended related bibliography.H.L. Mencken wrote, "No romantic novel ever written in America, by man or woman, is one half so beautiful as 'My Antonia.'"JANA

By Just Another Reader The second book in the saga of Death Pope begins right after the first work, and feels like Roberto has really come into his own through the continuation of his burgeoning role in Renaissance Rome. All of the compelling side characters are present (along with additional friends and foes), and I was especially to see more interaction and development of the Gian Fu narrative arc. None of the subplots overstay their welcome, and the reader is fed enough information to want to continue reading. The same attention to historical detail is present where this alternative history is place within events and personalities of the time.As is to be expected, now that Roberto, the pope, is exercising more agency as both Christ's vicar and a sort of vigilante for a good, presumably higher power, there are more action scenes. One of the most compelling aspects of Death Pope's storytelling is the combination of clumsiness, skill, luck, mistakes, and even grace that befall the characters involved in the fighting events. An analogous example, for me, is the action found in the Indiana Jones films--Indiana fights the bad guys and gets beat up, and prevails in believable ways. The accidental and contingent occurrences found in Death Pope make the characters and their experiences plausible and gripping. It keeps the reader glued to the screen to find out what will happen next, who gets saved (or not), and who feels the touch of death. I cannot recommend this enough and I eagerly await the next installment.

Right then and there I was ready to see the Angel of Death visit someone... I wasn't disappointed.Oakes successfully deepens his characters in this second book of the Death Pope series to the point where they feel like family. There is a scene in the book where Roberto is out in the city for the first time as pope. It left me almost able to feel his conflict as the puppet pope. Right from the beginning of the book, I was waiting with Roberto and Cosimo to find out where this ride would take us next.In the first book, Roberto was a bumbling 16 year old boy with a new calling. Black Flame picks up right after the end of the prior book. We get to watch Roberto and his band of friends come into their own and learn more about their calling. It truly feels like a privilege to get to tag along while they hone their skills and continue down the path put in front of them.Again, I do have to make a complaint, though. It is quite rude of Oakes to not have DP3 ready by the time I was done with this book. I find myself waiting impatiently again. Luckily, it seems, his release schedule is one that supports needy readers like myself. If you liked the first book, you'll love this one. If you didn't like the first one, read it anyway. It feels like we're just getting started!

By Gia Giovenale Wasn't sure what to expect with the garish title and the beginning's unlikely story plot but it turned out to be one of the best-written books I've read in a long time. I was very quickly enmeshed in the story; so much so that when I finished reading it, I immediately bought the next book - and that rarely happens with me. I would be happy to buy anything John Oakes writes; he's that good.

I love the characters, ALL of them even Hades. I hope L.A. Starkey keeps writing she is an amazing author. The book not only held love, soul mates, and family but also finding hope and yourself. It kept you on the edge of your seat most of the time. It had laughs, tears, and smiles. The author made sure you got a feel for every character. Sam is a strong girl who wants to find herself. Marcus is a boy in search for the only girl who will ever hold his heart. Nick is a boy running from someone he never thought he could love. It was not one of those books where everything was about only two people which made it a lot more fun to read. And it added mythology to modern day soul mates! I thought the ending was great though I wish it told you more.Besides that it was an amazing book I will recommend to anyone. Great author and amazing book.I LOVE IT AND HOPE YOU DO TOO!!!!

Very descriptive; I had no issue finding my place inside the story, to witness the events. Well written, with a new side shown to the Gods and Godesses from Greek mythology. I really hope the author spins off this series, and expands on the other characters, Hades, Persephone, Prometheus, Pandora...and I truly hope Nichlas gets to tell his story now...Definitely recommend this journey!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A REALLY GOOD MYTHICAL SERIES FOR TODAY By Marigrah60 The first book "Deceived" I read individually and it had blank out pages. I bought the series and was able to catchup on the Story. I really liked it. It is a Greek Mythology type story with gods, Zeus, Promethius, Posiden. However, a curse that was created by the Zeus's wife because of a feud between Zeus and Promethius, the children born to Cloi beloved of Promethius the boy and girl. The boy soul was split into two boys. They were sent to earth and protected by two assigned protectors. The Soul Mate for the one child that had his soul split is sent to earth and does not know of her identity. They meet in dreams where the two brothers profess their love for the single soul mate. Her job is to break the seals and begin the curse and join her soul mate into one person. The adventures are really interesting and I loved the ending. I would recommend this as a light read.

Pure and Beautiful Love By Jenny Rapp We first met Scott and Krista in Reconnected and Disconnected, and I was thrilled to finally read their love story in this book. I thought Krista was strong before, but man she really showed her strength and love for Scott and it was beautiful. She has such a genuine heart and it was touching to see her help a troubled teen movie star. Scott is surprised by something from his past, and again you get to see Krista's strength and how much in love the two of them are.I was excited to see how Liam and Katy, from the previous books in this series, were doing as well, since they make appearances in the story.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A cute story about friendship By Ashley Tomlinson This was one of the cutest books I've ever read. The story was so unique and well-written. A truly great story about friendship that I think a lot of people would enjoy reading. At first I thought it was a little strange that Oppie's best friend was a dragon, that apparently uses cell phones. It was a little difficult for me to picture a dragon having a cell phone, how big was that phone? Yes that was the difficult part for me to picture not the actual dragon part. Anyway, though I thought it was weird at first I thought about how awesome it would be to have a dragon so it felt less weird then.I would love to have a friendship like Oppie and Aurie! They were so inspirational. All the names in this book were odd. I gave up trying to figure out how to pronounce some of them. I like the magical concept because I love everything dealing with the paranormal. Though some things felt a little childish to me, like maybe a younger audience would enjoy it better than I. It didn't deter me from reading though, sometimes I need to read something like this - like a palate cleanser. This was a really cute story and I know book two will be just as good!

Splendid creatures and mythology are incorporated into an epic tale about friendship, love and good-versus evil. It was truly magical. It's jam packed with positive messages about acceptance and courage.YES! It was a bit slow to follow occasionally, as it is filled with unusual characters with unusual names. I find this to be inherent in a lot of fantasy books. ( Loved the Selkies! Selfies were part of my storytelling when my daughter was younger.) I won't spoil it. If you are looking for a clean read with super positive messages, I recommend this to you.The author writes with a great love of mythology and creativity. "For you, a bow and arrow, with an amethyst arrowhead that will glow a bright pink when you hit your target; and it changes anything life-threatening into something harmless - like a dagger into a fluffy white cloud or a dragon's fiery breath into cotton candy."

Truly Magical By Gladys #XOXOtheNerdGirl *** THIS BOOK WAS PROVIDED BY THE PUBLISHER/AUTHOR IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW ***This book encompasses everything that a young girl should learn about themselves growing up. It's not just a tale of myths, legends and creatures. It's a lesson of love, friendship and companionship.Alison Clarke has taken her main character, Oppie, through a journey with her dragon friend, Aurie, fighting an evil dragon named, Royzendeus. Along the way their army has grown and so does their friendship. Their sisterhood. Her writing is simplistic but beautiful non the less. It build a world of magic and myth but doesn't stray from lessons embedded deep in the character's development. I await more from Alison!!I tip my Nerd Girl hat to you!! 5 stars*** This review has been done in conjunction with Nerd Girl ***

After crash-landing in the mountains far from New Alexandria, Kestrel and Caleb are on the run from the Harvesters, a mysterious tribe known only for their extreme cruelty. Along the way, she begins having doubts about her trust in Caleb, who revealed that the traditions of her tribe are built on lies, that the soon-to-awaken Ancestors will only tolerate a peaceful and harmonious world, and that those who fail to submit to the Ancestors’ vision will be eradicated. Kestrel is not sure what to believe, but she must do all she can to keep Caleb alive in order to use him as a bargaining chip to rescue her brother. And if it turns out that what Caleb says is true, it will fall on her to forge a peace accord between the proud and independent members of her tribe, the Ancestors, and the people of New Alexandria—a task, she’s sure, that will most certainly fail. But first, she and Caleb must escape a relentless foe. As their enemies tighten the noose, Kestrel must take ever-greater chances with their lives to avoid capture, or face horrors beyond imagining. Tribe Four: The Harvesters, is a 40,000 word young adult dystopian story. It is part four of a serialized work loaded with survival and adventure, science fiction and suspense. Join Kestrel Stoneheart as she is thrust onto a harrowing path of fast-paced action and thrilling twists. Stand with her as she faces off against indomitable enemies. Share her amazement and dismay as she begins uncovering mysteries that will not only shatter her beliefs, but also change her world forever. Q & A with Kaelyn Ross Question: How did you come up with the idea for the Tribe series? Kaelyn: I’ve always loved dystopian and sci-fi stories that are full of twists and turns, surprises, suspense, and mystery, so it seemed like a no-brainer to combine all those elements into a thrilling adventure with an exciting female lead. Q: Is Tribe for kids only? Kaelyn: Not at all. There are some very adult themes in Tribe, but I wanted to write a story that anyone of any age can enjoy. The heroine is a sixteen-year-old girl who lives a life that, at times, seems sheltered to those of us in the modern world. But at the same time, the traditions of her people forces her to do things that would knock most of us flat. Q: What other works inspired you to write Tribe? Kaelyn: I really enjoy what The Hunger Games, Divergent, and The Maze Runner provided for those of us who enjoy the young adult market, so it seemed natural to write Tribe. Q: What sets Tribe apart from the books you mentioned? Kaelyn: The main difference with Tribe is the underlying thread of mystery that runs through the entire series about what really happened to Kestrel’s world and why it happened—and I’m not giving that secret away until the last book :) Q: Why did you choose to serialize Tribe? Kaelyn: When I started thinking about Tribe, I knew it was going to be a big, deeply layered saga that would rip Kestrel Stoneheart away from her rather primitive lifestyle and force her to confront a secret and forbidden world that challenges everything she knows and believes. For me, a series of mini-adventures is the best way to gradually reveal things that neither Kestrel nor the reader would’ve ever guessed at the beginning. And, of course, that means leading up to a grand finale that keeps you glued to the edge of your seat. Q: Can readers get the whole series in one place? Kaelyn: Absolutely! Tribe: The Complete Saga (parts 1-5) is the best way for those who want to fully immerse themselves in Kestrel’s world, and also to save a bit of money while they’re at it! Q: Is there anything you want to say to your readers? Kaelyn: You bet! I love you guys! Thank you so much for reading! This story of the series is just as fast moving, suspenseful and surprising as the previous stories! The descriptions of the Harvesters did creep me out and I could well imagine how it would feel to be in that situation, facing the uncertainty of survival. But what can you do when it looks so hopeless? As a Red Hand, you face your fears and fight for your life with all your strength and abilities; at least die with honor! But the story twists and turns so quickly that Kestrel must be nimble mentally and physically. Caleb has proven that, even though he's rather clutzy, he is sharp witted, too. I had to shake my head at the city boy, Caleb, for being somewhat inept with the physical world. But they managed to survive and go "from the fry pan, into the fire" and out again to their rescue. But it is a mental challenge, joining with Kestrel, to figure out what those Ancestors had intended and what their plans are for her future and the future of her tribe. I'm definitely rooting for the tribal side!

I enjoy books like this that get better with each book. Some scenarios are not really believable, but still enjoy staying with Kestrel as she matures and learns. I also like that there are no scenes written involving intimate relationships or bad language. I look forward to more of these by Kaelyn and have liked her FB page to follow what's next.

The first of a trilogy based on the exploits of John Hughes, who founded a city in Russia in the 1800s In 1869, Tsar Alexander II decided to drag Russia into the industrial age. He began by inviting Welsh businessman John Hughes to build an ironworks. A charismatic visionary, John persuaded influential people to invest in his venture, while concealing his greatest secret – he couldn’t even write his own name. John recruited adventurers prepared to sacrifice everything to ensure the success of Hughesovka (Donetsk, Ukraine). Young Welsh men and women fleeing violence in their home country; Jews who have accepted Russian anti-Semitism as their fate and Russian aristocrats, all see a future in the Welshman’s plans. In a place where murderers, whores, and illicit love affairs flourish, The Tsar’s Dragon is their story of a new beginning in Hughesovka, a town of opportunity.

A classic of Slavic vampire literature from 19th century Serbian author Milovan Glisic, “After Ninety Years“ tells the tale of Sava Savanovic, who haunted the watermill in the village of Zarozje. Because Glisic wrote 17 years before Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” introduced bats and Transylvania to the vampire trope, he based his story on the folktales and folk beliefs of villagers in the mountains of western Serbia along the Drina River valley. As such, it represents a treasure trove of ethnographic information and offers insights into authentic vampire lore before the creation of the modern pop culture vampire. The language Glisic employs is the vernacular of the uneducated and illiterate rural population in the mountainous regions of western Serbia along the Drina River valley in the 18th and 19th centuries. In contrast to the heavily ornamented and wordy prose so common among his 19th century contemporaries in Russia and the west, Glisic deliberately wrote in a sparse, plain, and raw style, accurately reflecting the mannerisms of village life and culture, an approach used by Mark Twain in “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”. Similar to 19th century American author Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow or Rip Van Winkle, Glisic mined local folklore to retell the story of the vampire Sava Savanovic. As such, the text presents a wealth of ethnographic material. Glisic offers valuable insights into the roles of women and children in the traditional patriarchal Serbian zadruga, a family-based agricultural cooperative that formed the basis of village life. The role of alcohol in hospitality, causing and settling disputes is also quite evident. And village gossip plays an important role in the everyday life of both men and women. Of particular note is Glisic’s description of the folk beliefs surrounding vampires, how they are found, how they are killed, the forms they take, their physical appearance, etc. In this, Glisic accurately reflects folk beliefs still present today in many rural areas of the Balkans.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Undying Story By liketoread As someone from the Balkans I found 'Leptirica' (She-butterfly) one of the scariest movies ever, so it has been a real revelation to me that a noted author from the 19th century Milovan Glisic wrote (and, no doubt-revamped) the folk tale about famous vampire Sava Savanovic who also features in the terrifying She-butterfly.The story itself, like most folk tales, is uncomplicated and suited to an audience that will listen while sitting cosily by the fire.A great appeal of this published work might be in carefully comparing details in the novella with those in the movie, as James Lyon, the translator, and Andrew M.Boylan, who wrote the Foreword, have skillfully and thoroughly done, with lots of helpful observations and explanations. This undying story, now available in English, will definitely attract attention of anthropologists, collectors of folk tales, vampirologists, and will be enjoyed by a general reader, too.

About the Author Karen has been writing since she was twelve years old and has previously been published in numerous periodicals. She has recently retired from nearly 14 years with the K-9 Unit of Search and Rescue in Southern Oregon where she worked her beloved Dobermans in Area Wilderness Air Scent and Human Remains Detection. Karen and her husband of 42 years ran a business for 30 years together. Not only do they still share an office, they also share a love of laughter, family, and friends. Karen says she draws her inspiration from life, which she feels truly presents much more hilarity than her own overactive imagination can fabricate on a daily basis!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Digging Holes in Paradise By Roland T. Parker What a delightful novel! Even the minor characters were well drawn and interesting. I cared about all of them, even the bawdy ones Josette encountered along the way. Too bad Sam Elliot and Jodie Foster are too old - they would have been perfect for Wolf and Josette. The story's settings were given with a wealth of detail. It's obvious the author did a great deal of research into the furnishings of different buildings in the late 1850's. And her description of the wild west brothel was most convincing. Home truly is where a man can hang his hat. I like the way the author invested the story with wit and humor. That puts zip in her story and makes readers want to turn the pages

Take this chance to step into the era of the civil war and the gold rush, by getting to know a young, fiercely independent girl, Josette. She thinks she knows the ways of the world, based on her prosperous life in Missouri with its proper behavior and etiquette. She soon discovers that the wild west lives by other rules. A great story for history buffs or if you know a teenager ready to strike out in the world alone. I read it before going to the mining town of Bodie, CA, and it brought the dusty streets to life again.

My kind of book!Josette is feisty and full of ideals which prevent her from marrying the man chosen by her father. What choice does she have but to make a run for it? After she arrives in Nevada by stagecoach, the Wild West was never the same! She has to get out of one crazy predicament after another, each one funnier than the last. If you like humor and adventure with your romance, you gotta read this book!
