By Zou Zou Just Patty is a compilation of the adventures of Patty Wyatt and her best friends Connie Wilder and Priscilla. The book's publication date is 1911. The young ladies are in their Senior year at St. Ursula's boarding school. The novel opens with the three discovering that they will not be roommates. Each girl has been assigned a new and generally impossible roommate. The Latin Instructor, Miss Lord, has convinced the Principal, Mrs Trent, to separate the three mischievous friends. The girls plead to be re-united and returned to their former rooms in the West Wing (Paradise Alley). How they convince the Dowager to return them to Paradise Alley is ingenious and amusing. The girls' adventures continue from exposing a dubious fictitous romance created by the worldly Mae Mertelle to facilitating the romance of gymnasium teacher Miss Jellings and Mr Gilroy with a little judicious Gypsy fortune telling. It is amusing to read how the worth of a supposed Suitor is judged by his gifting a volume of Marie Correlli's Works. The girls' grousing on being required to attend Friday afternoon lectures on Woman's Rights is interesting when you realise that this book was published prior to the enactment of the 19th Amendment. These young women are aware of unions, strikes and the eight hour day. There is even a schoolgirl foray into the popular belief of spiritualism. Ghost parties and seances give rise to ectoplasmic mischief. This is a book of clever funny stories of young women at the beginning of the twentieth century. Recommended.

Jean Webster Amazes By Shirley Curtis Maybe this is an old title, almost historical, but it was so well written and interesting that you could easily see the events in Patty's life in your minds eye. Jean Webster was one of my mother's favorite writers, and having read another of her books out of curiousity, I had to read more. It's well worth it. Patty charms, tests, and changes you. A very good read.

By AnnaKayBook Full Review at my blog, Diamond&Coal Book Reviews:[...] When I downloaded this for my Kindle (it's free on Amazon as part of Project Gutenberg), I had already read Daddy Long-Legs and Dear Enemy. Jean Webster has a pretty sharp sense of humor and writes wonderfully relatable heroines, that put me in mind of L.M. Montgomery (only with some extra snarkiness, versus dreaminess) and her Anne series. I thought about reading When Patty Goes to College first since it was written before this one, but decided to go in chronological order by the actual setting of the book. I normally am not a huge fan of books told in short story/vignette form, but this one really was a pretty good book when it comes down to it. Patty is an absolute lightning rod for mischief and makes it a habit to deliberately misinterpret things that people say to her or instruct her to do - with mostly hilarious results. The other two girls are in the mischief with her, but Patty is most definitely the ringleader! There were some that were almost entirely humorous, like the incident where Patty and the girls strike for better/more equal treatment in Latin class, and the incident with one of the girls having a fake beau (boyfriend) to hurt another girl's feelings (Patty takes care of that one with some pretty funny antics). But there were also stories like the one where Patty is stuck at school for Christmas and decides to help a lonely and out of place student who feels abandoned have a meaningful holiday. Also, the incident with the prank where Patty accidentally encounters a real burglar and finds him a job when she goes trespassing on a grumpy, reclusive millionaire's property. Patty always means well, even when she's trying to get around doing things that she should (like studying to make up an exam that she misses). Overall I was impressed with this book and felt like the overall tone to it avoided the malicious spirit that books centered around pranks and boarding schools tend to have on occasion (whether by accident or design, things do move in that direction quite often). I am only sorry that Jean Webster died at such a young age, with so much potential to be a classic children's writer in the collective consciousness instead of nearly forgotten, as I feel she is in our present day. Also interesting to note is that Jean Webster was Mark Twain's grandniece. Who knows maybe his famous snark is some of the reason she manages mischief so admirably in her own novels! I highly recommend this one, especially for fans of classic books along the lines of Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, or the Betsy-Tacy series. My only real complaint is that I wish there were more to this book. It felt far too short, especially with the story Webster chose to end on.VERDICT: 4.5/5 Stars**No money or favors were exchanged for this review. This book is now available mostly in used bookstores, online, or maybe even at your local library.**

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Smart! By Terry Tyler Reviewed by me as a member of Rosie Amber's Review Team4.5 starsIn this further adventure of the Assassin Without A Name, our hero is recruited by his ex love, Liz, for a special mission. As with the other books in this series, I felt that its charm lay not so much in the plot itself as in the writing of the incidental parts. I am not particularly interested in reading long, blow by blow accounts of fights or daring escapes, but I love the bits about the Assassin's life, his thoughts, etc. I like to picture him in his 'working gear', climbing over his rooftop empire like a cat, unseen by the Black Guard who seek him below, and reading little snippets about his life, like his secret hideout in the deplorable Shambles area of town, where one takes one's life in one's hands simply by entering its streets...Scott Marlowe has invented a marvellous character, and writes beautifully, with wit and a wonderful turn of phrase. I'd like to see a novella telling about the Assassin's early life, something that makes more use of the writer's powers of observation, character portrayal and presentation of atmosphere. Again, this reminded me very much of some of Roald Dahl's stories; the style of writing is very similar. Good stuff!

By Amazon Customer With Thief's Gambit, Scott Marlowe has created another thrilling tale about the Assassin Without a Name. Thief's Gambit comprises more than just a killing. This time, The Assassin Without a Name is hunted by Gwendolyn and her Black Guards - a nuisance as he's been recruited for a mission with Elizabeth West. As I mentioned in my earlier review - The Assassin Without a Name is quite a character and has some surprises for the readers. I was drawn into the story - hoping to not become his next killing order and wondering about the rivalling groups. The occasional shade of funny moments makes for a real enjoyable read. This is for you if you like fantasy, crime and - do not object to admitting that a killer can seem like quite a nice guy. ;-)The World of Uhl is addictive! :-DHighly recommended!4.6 stars

PDF Ebook The Irish Rebellion, by Joan Dillon

In 1641, an Irish rebellion broke out, led by Irish Catholic gentry who tried to seize control of the English administration in Ireland to force concessions for the Catholics living under English rule. The rebellion, however, developed into an ethnic conflict between native Irish Catholics on one side, and English and Scottish Protestant settlers on the other. Amid the chaos, violence, bloodbath, and loss, we follow Irish siblings Patrick, Mary, and Cullen and their English foster siblings, James and Mary, as they try to escape the bloodshed of their land and carve a new life of their own in a new land. America opens up new possibilities as well as new challenges: the land is beautiful, abundant, and fertile, but some inhabitants and settlers alike -Native Americans, Irish, Scottish, and English -are caught up in a web of intrigue, betrayal, lust, and passion, all of which threaten to destroy their fragile coexistence in the New World.

Mr. Grenfall Lorry boarded the east-bound express at Denver with all the air of a martyr. He had traveled pretty much all over the world, and he was not without resources, but the prospect of a twenty-five hundred mile journey alone filled him with dismay. The country he knew; the scenery had long since lost its attractions for him; countless newsboys had failed to tempt him with the literature they thrust in his face, and as for his fellow-passengers—well, he preferred to be alone. And so it was that he gloomily motioned the porter to his boxes and mounted the steps with weariness.

There aren't many printed version of this text, so my professor has to make due with what is available. However, NORILANA BOOKS ought to be too ashamed to call themselves a publisher. Sometimes, independent companies shouldn't do what the big boys do. This book has too many typos and the chapters are incorrectly numbered. For example, when I finished reading chapter 22, the next chapter was 13.Now onto the book: I'd rate it 4 STARS. The story is very interesting and draws the reader in from the beginning, because McCutcheon's is a good writer. I would recommend this story to anyone looking to read something outside their normal realm. I just would highly recommend they download the free Google Books version. Or see if there is another version offered on Amazon. But, DO NOT under any circumstances buy this book from this craptastic publisher.

Quyle The Graustark story is the simple/classic formula: 1) boy meets girl; 2) boy looses girl; 3) boy gets girl back. It's told with an overwhelmingly American gingoism, and some dialect portrayals that are not politically acceptable today. The book gives insight into the still-strong American pride in the republic versus monarchies that existed a century ago. I thought the plot devices were usually pretty transparent, but one or two did surprise me - in part because they were so out-of-left field. The book foretells a couple of significant political events unintentially -- the demand of reparations by a nation that wins a war, and the overwhelming burden it imposes on the loser -- as in WWI; and the expectation that a royal ruler who married a commoner would have to abdicate the throne -- as in 1930's England. I plan to read at least the first sequel to see where the story goes next. If this were a modern book, I'd give it 2 stars, but for what it reveals, it gets an additional rating score.

Powell Even though it was written 100 years ago, this still had the magic: adventure, romance, mystery, a little comic relief...second time around for me. It's not too long, and was a very enjoyable part of my vacation. I'm glad it's part of a series so the characters can grow and develop over the years. Although I have the actual original hardcover, by reading it on my Kindle I don't have to worry about damaging the "antique," and as a FREE book on Kindle, it was a great bargain! Either a man or a woman would be interested.

A forgotten gunslinger battles modern-day gangsters At seventy-one, the Wind River Kid is a kid no longer. In the last days of the Old West, he was feared in gambling halls across the country, a hard-nosed card shark who didn’t mind killing to prove a point. When he had gotten his fill of violence, he moved back to Elkhorn, a lonely mountain town that died bit by bit, its population dwindling until he was the only one left. It’s 1927 now, but to the aged Kid, it may as well be 1875. He’s been alone for decades, comforted only by the ghosts of a vanished West—until the modern world comes to visit, guns blazing. A dangerous young couple comes to Elkhorn looking for a place to hide out from the killers on their tail. Wild River just wanted to be left alone, but he will have to take up the gun again if he is ever to rest in peace.

Raw milk has become the world's most controversial food. Proponents portray it as a miracle health food. Opponents claim it is one of the most dangerous foods known to mankind--so inherently dangerous it can kill you. Obviously, both sides can't be correct. The Raw Milk Answer Book probes more than 200 of the most tantalizing questions surrounding raw milk, in a refreshing conversational style. Among the questions it raises: What are the actual risks of becoming seriously ill from raw milk? Is it possible to become sick from pasteurized milk? How convincing to serious scientists is research out of Europe indicating raw milk protects against childhood asthma and allergies? How can I tell if a particular farm is a safe source of raw milk? Should I feed raw milk to my children? What if I want to feed it to my children but my spouse objects? It provides objective and straightforward answers, backed up by studies and data. This is the ultimate resources for individuals trying to decide whether raw milk is for them. "Gumpert churns out every answer to every conceivable question in the raw milk controversy. A must-read." Joel Salatin, Virginia farmer and author "David Gumpert explains in clear and lucid prose why more people are making raw drinking milk their personal choice. And beyond that, he provides valuable guidance on food safety, a review of the evidence for health benefits, and sound advice on sourcing this special food." Joseph Heckman, Ph.D., professor of soil science, Rutger University "The book presents the positions and reasons for the opposing views on raw milk, and gives the reader the opportunity to make a well-grounded decision whether to consume raw milk products or stay with pasteurized or conventional dairy products. I highly recommend this book to all consumers interested in raw milk." Catharina Berge, Ph.D., board member of the Raw Milk Institute "Thanks to journalist David Gumpert for writing such an easily digestible primer on such a complex subject. I know it will be welcome by those who want to understand why raw, unpasteurized milk has at once become so popular for those serious about their food options and at the same time become public enemy number one to dairy industry lobbyists and government regulators." Mark Castel, Co-founder Cornucopia Institute

The Raw Milk Answer Book: What You REALLY Need to Know About Our Most Controversial Food, by David Gumpert

About the Author David E. Gumpert is a journalist who specializes in health and food issues. He is the author of two other books about food civil rights: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Food Rights: The Escalating Battle Over Who Decides What We Eat (2013), and The Raw Milk Revolution: Behind America’s Emerging Battle Over Food Rights (2009). Both books include a preface by farmer Joel Salatin. He has written for a number of online publications, including Modern Farmer, Alternet, Grist and Huffington Post. His popular blog, The Complete Patient (www.thecompletepatient.com), has since 2006 aggressively covered a number of health and food rights issues, focusing heavily on regulatory excesses involving raw milk and food safety. It has been instrumental in launching a national discussion about restrictions on the availability of unpasteurized dairy products, and in highlighting an emerging debate over food rights. A previous book was co-authored with his aunt, about his family’s experiences during the Holocaust: Inge: A Girl’s Journey Through Nazi Europe. David is also a well-known business writer, having authored or co-authored seven books about various aspects of entrepreneurship and running a small business. His most recent business book, Burn Your Business Plan! What Investors Really Want from Entrepreneurs, provides entrepreneurs with concrete guidance for going beyond written business plans to attract investor interest. It has been widely praised by entrepreneurs, investors, and academics alike, and is used as a teaching tool in many business schools. He has also run several businesses. In 1995, he co-founded an Internet marketing company that grew to 20 employees and was acquired in late 1999 by a public corporation. It was David’s business experience writing about and running small businesses that stimulated his interest in food civil rights. He understood that small farms are often struggling businesses, and concluded that government attacks on small farms over raw milk and private food sales impede their ability to compete and survive. Prior to his book-writing and entrepreneurship career, he spent nine years as a staff reporter with The Wall Street Journal and seven years as small business editor of the Harvard Business Review. He was also a senior editor of Inc. Magazine. His bachelor’s degree is in political science from the University of Chicago, and he has a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

An Excellent Explanation of the Facts and Issues Pertaining to Raw Milk By Oil Painter11 My first exposure to raw milk was in my best friend's kitchen. She had severe digestive problems with all dairy for decades but just discovered she could modestly consume raw dairy without discomfort. Watching her drink a glass of milk straight from the cow was extraordinary and I had to learn more.I am a very methodical person. Before any large purchase or life change, I'm apt to research and read for weeks before making a decision. I wish David's book had been around when I was deciding if I wanted to make raw milk part of my own dietary shift to more traditional, nutrient-dense foods. Data that took me multiple books, articles and web sites to find are mostly included in this volume. And though I've been drinking raw milk for five years now and continue to read up on it, David enlightened me with information I'd never seen before. His approach is relaxed and very conversational. Yes, he supports the availability of healthy raw milk but freely admits it's not for everyone. His question/answer format brought up ideas I'd never considered and encouraged me to think more fully about my own choice. If you are interested in pulling away from our industrial model of food or have already done so, or if you're concerned about someone you know consuming raw dairy, this book will give you a broad, excellent profile of the most controversial item in the grocery cart. I made the choice to drink raw milk for health reasons only to be continually shocked at what a mine field of medical and political controversy swirls around this food. It became very personal when my own farmer was charged and went to trial for the "crime" of delivering our milk to our drop sites. I'm happy to say he was acquitted and is still delivering our milk as well as butter, eggs and innumerable other foods (if you get the chance to taste raw butter from cows grazing on green grass, do NOT pass up the opportunity!).David's book is a welcome addition to my personal library of books that have informed my journey as I learn to eat as healthily as possible.

The ballerina and the prince Mirande has a coveted place in the ballet chorus of the Paris Opera. However, her mother’s ruinous debts leave her only one choice – to find a wealthy patron who will support her in return for her favors. The Viscount de Valonne seems ideal: handsome, young, wealthy and unmarried. Surely she can overlook the fact that she does not love him, and that each day she becomes more and more convinced that there is something wrong with her fairytale romance. Bernard has a fine title and little else. Discharged from the army following a serious wound at Sedan and widowed shortly thereafter, the Prince of the Crimea is trying to rebuild his life. When an old colleague asks for his help in tracking down a German spy, how can he refuse? The Viscount de Valonne is a young man of distinguished family, and proving that he’s a traitor is going to be difficult. He only has one weakness – the beautiful ballerina who is his mistress. Wooing her to reach Valonne seems like a good idea until Bernard begins to realize how dangerously tangled his own feelings are becoming. Can both of them survive this web of intrigue under the gorgeous dome of the Paris Opera? In this deadly world of spy and counterspy, the prince and the ballerina must be enemies – or lovers.

Wish writers would stop making girls look like they don't know who to choose and such. I did love how much it drew me in with the characters. You would love to just yell at them for the things they do. Everything kind of goes as you would think it would up until the end. Then you are slapped around and wondering how all the twists and turns came so unexpectedly. Made me want to get started and find out what happens. All I have to say is that I hope Klaus finds it in him to forgive her and that Saul gets what's coming to him.

A Company of Swans, by Eva Ibbotson

About the Author Eva Ibbotson, born Maria Charlotte Michelle Wiesner (21 January 1925 – 20 October 2010), was an Austrian-born British novelist, known for her children's books. Some of her novels for adults have been successfully reissued for the young adult market in recent years. For the historical novel Journey to the River Sea (Macmillan, 2001), she won the Smarties Prize in category 9–11 years, garnered unusual commendation as runner up for the Guardian Prize, and made the Carnegie, Whitbread, and Blue Peter shortlists. She was a finalist for the 2010 Guardian Prize at the time of her death. Her last book, The Abominables, was one of eight books on the longlist for the same award in 2012.The following interview appeared in the Fall 2001 Preview MagazineDo you have any rituals?I can write anywhere if I have to because I still use a pen and paper -, but when I am at home I go to the old carved desk I inherited from my mother who was a writer too, and told some fantastic stories. The morning is best for ideas, and I have to be wearing warm clothes because when I am thinking hard I get cold. And I have to have a waste paper basket handy for all the pages that have gone wrong.Whom do your share your writing with first?I don't really share my work until it is published, I feel too uncomfortable about unfinished work. When did you know you wanted to be a writer?I don't think I ever knew, it just happened. One day I wrote `author' in my passport and that was that..What were you doing when you found out that your first book was going to be published?Cooking supper for my husband and children. My agent phoned and I shouted and we all danced about, except my husband who saw to it that the sauce did not burn. What did you treat yourself to when you found out that your first book was accepted for publication? My first money as a writer came from a short story in a magazine. It was a very small sum, and I bought Mars Bars for everybody in the family. What was the first book you remember reading as a child? Did you have a favorite book as a child?I don't remember the name of my first book, but I know it had a picture of very bright berries, green and red in a forest- and people lived inside the berries... Perhaps that's where my passion for forests comes from!Do you read reviews of your own work?Yes, when I am sent them, but I don't go out and look. What’s the best question a teen has asked about your writing?I don't know what the best question is, but by far the most common is `Where do you get your ideas from?' - and the answer to that is very difficult (and therefore interesting). What are you reading right now?The Wizard of Earthsea, by Ursula Le Guin.Susan, your editor, tells me Journey to the River Sea is a book you've wanted to write for years. How did the idea first come to you? Journey to the River Sea was written quite quickly but it spent years and years inside my head. It started with my hearing about this fabled opera house a thousand miles from the mouth of the Amazon and I thought it was one of the strangest things I had ever heard - I meant to go there and see for myself but then I realised it would mean going back into the past because everything is quite different there now. So I went on reading and dreaming and researching and then one day, I picked up my pen to start a new book about witches and ghosts and found I had started to write an adventure story set in the jungle.

31 of 31 people found the following review helpful. Enchanting By Audrey In 1912, Cambridge, Harriet Morton lives in an oppresive household with her dry, clutch-fist aunt and narrow-minded father. Like Anna (of A Countess Below Stairs by the same author), Harriet possesses the pure, luminescent quality that Ibbotson seems to favor in her leading females. Harriet's main joy in her life is her dancing lesson; she is offered a chance to become part of a troupe going to the Amazons. She meets at a neglected Yorkshire mansion an endearing, odd little boy named Henry that begs her to find The Boy; Henry is sure that The Boy is in the Amazons and that he will save the ruined household. Struck with this serendipitious sign, Harriet takes the chance to follow her dream to the far-away land. We meet the bumbling, insensitive suitor, and the tempermental, aging ballerina; we meet Harriet's roommate and friend, Marie-Claude, a beauty who wants to open an inn by the mountains. Sometimes, the secondary characters can "break-or-make" a story; in this case, they perform their roles to perfection.Like all good books, the plot seems fairly simple until you explain it. I can't go into detail of who The Boy is (surely you must have guessed anyway!) but I will leave in mystery WHO he has become and WHY he is where he is. It wouldn't be fair to compare this book to A Countess Below Stairs, which is what I incline to do. This one is longer, and sometimes does drag on; the agonizing love of Anna and Rupert is not repeated because A Company of Swans is lighter, and more suited to convention (which you will recognize if you've been a long-time romance reader). There is a villain, but unlike the bloodthirstiness in "modern" historicals (is that an oxymoron?) she does not receive her comeuppance as one is used to. But the threads of the story weave together to form an effortless plot and a sweet, charming tale. Rather Dickens-ish in its range of "coincidences" that bring Harriet, the heroine, and Rom Verney, the hero, together, A Company of Swans is nonetheless beautifully written and an engaging read.

I found myself amazed and laughing out loud when I thought about those scenes later. However, I was disappointed to find the author used one of my pet peeves. The hero and heroine made erroneous assumptions about each other that would have been cleared up if only they had communicated in a normal manner. They loved each other and wanted to marry, but each one thought the other did not. Therefore, they separated. I hate this. I wanted to rate this 5 stars due to creativity and ideas I haven't seen elsewhere, but I'm giving it a 4, due to the reasons for the separation. I was also a bit sad at the end thinking about the evil done to Harriet by her father and aunt.CAUTION SPOILERS: Following are brief references to two wonderful scenes. Page 203, after seeing Harriet dance, Alvarez decides to do something he previously was not going to do. Page 233, Harriet's unbelievable delight in describing herself as "ruined" after she sleeps with Rom.Sexual language: none. Number of sex scenes: none. Sexual subject matter: Although there are no specific sex scenes, there are some discussions about or references to sex. Setting: 1912 England and Amazon River in Brazil. Copyright: 1985. Genre: historical romance.

Otherwise, I would hate to get anyone's hopes up. There is nothing worse than saying, "I just read a fabulous book and you will never be able to find it yourself." This novel is set in Europe and South America in the early 20th century before WWI, a time period I would like to see used more frequently. The heroine, Harriet, meets a little boy at an English estate who tells her she must somehow travel to South America and find his lost uncle to redeem his faltering estate. Harriet enters a touring ballet company of "Swan Lake" as a dancer in the corps by running away from the stifling home of her father-professor in Cambridge, England. The troupe travels to South America to perform and there she meets the hero, Rom, the lost uncle. There are some amazing coincidences in this book that you might not accept in a lesser work. There are also some big misunderstandings between Harriet and Rom. However, this novel is so well written by its Viennese author that those plot devices cause no annoyance whatsoever. The author's writing style is quite distinct from an American's or a UK writer's style which I found a refreshing change since those two writing groups tend to dominate the market. There are also many humorous moments and characters that will have you LOL as you read. The prima ballerina and the insect professor, to name two, are absolutely hilarious. I am now trying to find this author's other novels, all of which seem to be out of print and I can only hope that I beat you other auction aficionados to the punch! Thanks to EP and LLF for recommending this over on an online message board. You couldn't have been more right about this novel.Visit my blog with link given on my profile page here or use this phonetically given URL (livingasseniors dot blogspot dot com). They’ll have to love without judgment or reservation, they’ll have to be wise and accepting beyond their years, they’ll have to forgive for things before they’ve even happened, they’ll have to trust without seeing, have faith without knowing, and they’ll have to light their own way in the dark when everyone else is blind to show them the way. And more than anything else… they’ll fight like hell to keep each other.

From the Author The very first edition was a pre-order "stand in" copy that never should have been released. It was an error. It's been corrected and you can download the corrected copy under the "Manage your Kindle" section. We are very sorry about the mix-up. It was across the board for all venues and reading device sites. I've announced several times about the mix-up on all my social medias about the pre-order and apologized. If I've never released a book with editing corrections in it and basically a first draft before and I wouldn't do it now. I'm not the first to have a mix-up with pre-orders and I won't be the last. So please, please, don't assume and write bad reviews based off of that, especially if the author has never had a problem like that before. Problems happen sometimes and we have no control. The best thing to do is go to the author's site or media pages and look to see if there's been a problem or announcement about it. I'm so sorry this happened, but I hope that you enjoyed Seth and Ava's story more than anything. Thank you for reading the Significance series and any of books, and continuing this journey with me. - Shelly Crane

I am in super Duper crazy fan of Shelly Crane and I love her significant serious I was very excited about this book and I couldn't wait to read it.I normally don't gripe about books that have typos or misspelled words or a word that doesn't read properly. I know that things happen in editing and sometimes things get messed up or missed but this one had so many that it really took away from the flow of the story. My other problem was with repetition of the story. So much of it was the same. I mean this in descriptive sense of book. Hand movement, neck nuzzling and there was more. It was over and over again. If the author reads my review please know I adore you but something went terribly wrong here. You need better editor and beta readers. The story is sweet overall and I did not revisiting my favorite characters. I won't give up on the series because I am a true fan.

This book gave me all the feels I was hoping for, all the twists and turns I wished for, and all the love I expected and more. I'm so happy to have this series continue!Undeniably Chosen is the 6th book of the Significance series, though I think it can also be seen as the first spin-off book of the original series. The first 5 books follow Caleb and Maggie and their love story. But it is more than that. It is a lot of the history and big picture of the Virtuoso world that Caleb and his family, and then Maggie, live in. Consequence, the novella prior to Undeniably Chosen, is the story of Caleb and Maggie married with kids, and ties into the next book. Then Undeniably Chosen is the start of Ava (Caleb and Maggie's daughter) and Seth's (raised by the Watsons) story and the continuing saga of the Virtuoso world. If you are new to the Significance series, you could start with Undeniably Chosen, but you would be missing some big chunks of back-story. But you could also backtrack and start the series afterwards if you fall in love with Seth, Ava, Caleb, and Maggie, like I did.As for Undeniably Chosen, I completely loved it. This is not a reinvention of Caleb and Maggie's story. No, Ava and Seth have a story all of their own. From their first meeting, to their first confrontation, to their first misunderstanding, to their first kiss, and so much more, I was fully engrossed and entangled in how all their situations and predicaments would play out. I felt like I wanted their HEA as much as they did. But as much as I wanted everything to be perfect, like Ava did, I also loved all the twists and turns and the unpredictability of this story. I liked that I was kept in the dark and guessing how things would turn out. I was just so stinkin' happy to be back in the Virtuoso world, and I loved following along with Seth and Ava's journey.Speaking of Seth and Ava, I loved them. They were two characters I loved by themselves, then throw them together, and even through all the difficulties, I loved what they brought out of each other. We've got Ava, daughter of Caleb and Maggie, who is sweet and hopeful. She inherited all the good things from her parents, but with her own level of spunkiness. Then she gets matched up with Seth, who is not only a super hot firefighter, but also a sweetheart. Having been raised by the Watsons, though not a Watson himself, he had all the potential to be a terrible person, yet his good heart was able to survive his childhood. I loved getting to know him, and it's no wonder Ava fell for him. Ava and Seth are such a great couple! In addition to Seth and Ava's love story, and the ever-evolving Virtuoso world, we are also treated to some old favorites and newbies I really want to know more about. Is there more Caleb and Maggie? Yes! I was so happy to see them again, together like always, and with their children. Love them! Rodney, Ava's brother, was great. I love the family dynamic, and I hope to get lots more Rodney in the future. Then there's Ember, Bish and Jen's daughter and Ava and Rodney's cousin. She is a hoot. Bish always had a special place in my heart, so getting a glimpse of him and especially his daughter was a real treat. I really want to see more of Ava's brother and cousins in the future.Speaking of the future, for some reason, and I don't know where I got this idea from, I didn't think there would be more books after this one. BUT THERE WILL BE!! I'm so excited!!! Don't worry. No big cliff-hanger or anything. You can thoroughly enjoy this one and then patiently await the next. But there will be at least another book. I'm so happy!!! I loved Undeniably Chosen, love the Significance series, and eagerly anticipate anything Shelly Crane wants to stir up and whip together for the future.

I received and ARC from Shelly and was over the moon to get the chance to read it. This is by far the most emotional novel in the series. I was blown way and left completely without words when I was finished with it. It is that good. I didn't think I could be MORE of a fan, but I am.Ava and Seth have a hard start from the beginning. Back to the beginning they don't even remember. They have been set up to be the final crack in the frame of their world. They are the two that are going to change everything, It can't be that hard, can it?Being from two different clans is the start of everything for Ava and Seth. Their entire relationship is full of circumstances that could pull them apart, but they both know that they are meant for each other. A love like that is one worth fighting for. The feelings that they experience, and the way that these are explained to us in the story, are some of the most powerful scenes I have ever read. The struggles that both Seth and Ava face while powering through these big changes are the type of struggles that make or break characters."You're mine, Ava. Nobody, with just a few spoken words, can undo that and take you away from me. You are completely safe with me and completely mine, I promise."This is one of the first novels that I have read in a long while where I wasn't sure if we were going to get the happy ending that we wanted. There were lots of glimpses of possible chances for the future, and most certainly clues that we MIGHT get our happy ending. These glimpses though, were exactly that. Small possibilities that also had the chance of failure. I love when a novel can give me that, when a novel can give me the sheer terror of no happy ending. This novel has SO many heart breaking scenes that I should have armed myself with some chocolate and a nice comfy blanket. This novel rips you to shreds. Some of these scenes most certainly had me in tears, so prepare yourself. This is your official warning. Then we had the issue of the rest of the clans and the problems arising with the Watsons. I don't know about you, but I knew that they would be coming back. There was no way that they wouldn't want revenge for the actions of Maggie and Caleb during their journey. This novel is the own all of this series. It opens up the flood gates and starts the war that we knew was coming at some point.I feel like I am rambling about this novel. It was so good that I still can't wrap my mind around it. You need to read it. You need to get lost in this series. Get lost with Ava and Seth.

A Short Story - Love blooms in 1930s Bahrain... “His deep voice was soft as the waters in the bay on a summer night and his words were the most magical I had ever heard. They sent a thrill racing through my body like a hundred tiny Arab horses galloping down my spine. I closed my eyes with an effort to shut out his face, then opened them again, the tension of his loving words made me want to touch his lips and trace the soft bow of his mouth…” * * * 1930s Bahrain, oil has just been discovered in the Middle East and Andrew MacInnis from Canada has come to work there. Andrew visits a Bahraini carpet merchant, who does not speak English. The merchant calls for his daughter, Noor, to act as interpreter. Noor is a devout Muslim and as such must not expose her face to men outside of her immediate family. She acts as translator for her father and although he never leaves the two alone, under his very nose, Andrew and Noor get to know each other and fall desperately in love. The lovers secretly plot to run away but the risks are terrible. Noor’s father may send members of the family to hunt them down and kill them. Do they escape? Will Noor have the nerve to follow Andrew’s plan or will centuries of a formidable culture and Noor’s upbringing prevent these two young lovers from following their hearts?

Delightful "forbidden romance" written beautifully By thea1710@aol.com I was sent a review file of "Desert Flower" and found the story delightful.Review of Desert Flower by Zohra Saeed.I loved this story. From the opening paragraph it gripped my imagination by its beautiful language and the evocative description of the heat of the desert rang so true. The story painted a picture of Bahrain in the 1930s when harsh laws were still applied, but the kindness and love within a family unit was strong and palpable, in contrast to the barren, external environment.A young Muslim girl falls in love with a white, Christian man. She believes that their love is impossible due to the stark differences in their cultures and beliefs. The story depicts a very sensuous love affair which is conducted via words and exchanged glances. There are no touches or embraces, no kisses. He does not even see her face except for a momentary accidental glimpse at their first meeting. The author has an exceptional talent for depicting such a deep, emotional and passionate love with just the medium of words and imagination. It is far more erotic than any explicit sex scene could ever be.I do not want to spoil the ending, so will say no more, except to highly recommend this book, and ask you to remember the author's name. I believe she has a talent that deserves to lead her to become one of the country's top authors.

This is the theme of Zohra Saeed's short romantic novel set in the tiny island-state of Bahrain near Saudi Arabia in the 1930's. She paints an authentic picture of the Middle-Eastern Arab culture and its influence on the dreams and aspirations of Noor who unexpectedly meets and falls in love with Andrew, a visiting Canadian. The comparison with the cactus flower which blooms in the harsh and forbidding desert wastelands cleverly highlights the title of the novel. The story flows well. I liked the local references which are nicely interwoven in the first-person narrative: Moroccan baths to make the skin as silken as the Persian carpets sold by Noor's father. Socializing over tiny cups of Gahwa, the thick, rich Arab coffee. Mule carts carrying the Abaya-covered girl who romances Andrew with her expressive eyes. What didn't ring true is the ending. Without spilling the beans, I can only say that the father's final decision is totally out of character. In conclusion, an interesting fact unrelated to the novel: the author was born in India and has spent considerable time there.

I've lived in Bahrain for fourteen years and the book took me back there in a flash. I could almost smell it. It was so well written, the words just flowed from the pages. I couldnt put it down and was sorry when it was finished. I wanted more! I do hope there is a sequel coming soon. I've read it twice and I'm sure I'll read it again and any other books this author writes.

How is this book unique?

Formatted for E-Readers, Unabridged & Original version. You will find it much more comfortable to read on your device/app. Easy on your eyes. Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography Lord of the World is a 1907 novel by Monsignor Robert Hugh Benson that centers upon the reign of the Anti-Christ and the End of the World. It has been called prophetic by Dale Ahlquist, Joseph Pearce, Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis.According to his biographer, Fr. Cyril Martindale, Mgr. Benson's depiction of the future was in many ways an inversion of the science fiction novels of H. G. Wells. In particular, Benson was sickened by Wells' belief that Atheism, Marxism, World Government, and Eugenics would lead to an earthly utopia. Due to his depiction of a Wellsian future as a global police state, Benson's novel has been called one of the first modern works of dystopian fiction. Writing during the pontificate of Pope Pius X and prior to the First World War, Monsignor Benson accurately predicted interstate highways and passenger air travel using an advanced form of Zeppelin called the "volor". However, he also presumed the survival of the British Empire and predominant travel by rail. Like many other Catholics of the era in which he wrote, Monsignor Benson shares the political and economic views of G. K. Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc.

Review "Interesting it must be to all to whom the deepest convictions of a man's heart are of moment. And in the artistic balance and taste of Father Benson's literary power every reader will find delight." -- New York Times"Mr. Benson sees the world, four or five generations hence [this review was written in 1906], free at last from all minor quarrels, and ranged against itself in two camps, Humanitarianism for those who believe in no divinity but that of man, Catholicism for those who believe in no divinity but that of God." -- London Times"The book as art is beautiful, delicately balanced, deeply inspired, intelligently executed." --Putnam's

About the Author Robert Hugh Benson (1871-1914), enjoyed a celebrated and prolific career that lasted little over a decade. In addition to a great many non-fiction works, he authored a series of twenty novels and short story collections that combined a specific moral orientation with an astonishing popularity among the general public of the early twentieth century. As an Anglican and later a Catholic priest, Father Benson was in great demand as a speaker in both England and the United States. The most sensational English convert from the Anglican Communion to Catholicism since John Henry Newman, "Hugh," as his friends and family called him, was a son of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Benson wrote from a Catholic perspective, but with real understanding and sympathy for the Protestant position.

Like the novels that followed it By TJC I became interested in reading Lord of the World after I read that it was an early dystopion novel that preceded Brave New World and 1984 and ,in some respects, resembled them. In that sense Benson's novel is a fascinating step in the development of a very popular genre.Like the novels that followed it, it portrays a world in which the promise of earthly perfection although popular becomes for one person at least an all-consuming state that is indifferent to individuals. In what begins as an attempt to form a sort of world government capable of overcoming the divisive nature of religion soon reveals itself as even more intolerant than the religions it replaces. It all begins with the arrival of a mysterious American about whom nothing is known but who is able to captivate large crowds to such a degree that the nations of the world make him the President of the World. It isn't long before the price of world peace becomes the abandonment of religious belief, the acceptance of euthanasia and the annihilation of those who oppose an all-powerful government. As a caution, readers should know that the story is told from the point of view of a catholic priest loyal to his faith. As a result there are many descriptions and references to Catholic liturgy and belief. Any readers who find such things beyond their patience would be advised to stay away from this novel. On an entirely different level, the novel written in 1907 anticipated the future perhaps more clearly than did 1984 or Brave New World. The growth of air travel, the introduction of nuclear weapons, massive legislation limiting all sorts of religious or cultural choices, the totally secular state, globalization, the redistribution of wealth, the end of the supernatural, and the elevation of man as a divine being with its cult-like promotion of an all-wise leader are all here. Perhaps most fascinating is the degree to which this god-like figure called Julian Felsenburgh echoes the whole "we are the one we've been waiting for" vibe associated with Obama's glorification in 2008. As added touches, the novel offers hero-priest figure Percy Franklin, who becomes the pope while being the secular god, Felsenburgh's almost exact double in appearance and an apocalyptic ending. As flawed as it may appear in places, it is nonetheless a great read written by a long- forgotten writer of exceptionable imagination.

Robert Hugh Benson, a convert to Catholicism, captures the Catholic imagination about the end of the age in this beautiful and poetic work of fiction. Benson's ability to weave a biblical story line into an imaginative vision of the future is absolutely stunning. His writing brings to life what may be when the Lord of the World engages in the final battle against the Bride of Christ, the Church. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves well written literature.

But this edition with the boat on the cover is just not the one you want, I didn't realize when I ordered it that it is a full 8 1/2x11" size; this is not the best format for reading a novel and it also has some problems of poor editing from an OCR text. There is a similarly priced edition that is a normal size.I found this book a well-crafted, highly entertaining, thought provoking page turner. This was the most engaging thing I read in a long time. I already had bought it and had it sitting around, but finally got around to reading it after hearing Pope Francis promote it multiple times. The fact it's one of Pope Francis' favorite books makes it even more interesting to read. This is a super Catholic book, you will get the most out of it if you are familiar with the Traditional Latin Mass and for instance Latin Eucharistic hymns. If you are steeped in that then there is nothing difficult about this book. And if that is not as familiar to you, you will probably still make out what is happening though I could imagine the last couple pages to be difficult for a non Catholic to figure out. Like any futuristic book, a lot of the character of it is right from the time when it was written, so the juxtapositions involved in someone in 1907 describing the early 21st century can be pretty amusing. But what this book really explores is not what will happen to technology but much bigger questions, and Benson's vision about the nature and form of the showdown between the progressive anti-Christ "spirit of the world" and Christ is what makes this book compelling enough to be praised by more than one Pope. The basic gist of it simply rings true--he really puts his finger on something--and the only way to convey the idea this well is in a story--an essay or treatise is just not a substitute. The fascinating thing about Benson's scene of "the end of the world" is it is a scene so familiar to many devout and somewhat traditional-ish Catholics that you are right there in the scene. And if you still think after you read the book that Pope Francis is some kind of Communist plant, then you didn't actually read the book, because Pope Francis handily disabuses us of any such notion by recommending "The Lord of the World" as a favorite. Whatever Pope Francis is up to precisely, he understands that the battle lines are drawn, and Whose side he wants to be on.
