The jagged blast of high explosives rips through the evening air. In the sky over East London the searchlights criss-cross in search of the enemy. On the first night of the Blitz, a corpse is discovered in a van in the back streets of West Ham. Detective Inspector John Jago recognizes the dead man as local Justice of the Peace Charles Villiers. But a German bomb obliterates all evidence. Villiers was not a popular man, both powerful and feared. As the sirens wail, the detective must start matching motive to opportunity – and it doesn’t help when his boss foists an intrusive American journalist on him. Jago soon discovers the dead man held many secrets, some reaching back to World War I. A lot of people wished Villiers dead – and an air raid is a good time to conceal a murder.

At first glance, the book would seem to be a police procedural novel. However, the underlying theme is the Londoners reaction to the German bombings of World War II.The main character is Detective Inspector John Jago, a veteran of World War I. Jago's usual partner was called to military service, so he was breaking in a new man, Detective Constable Peter Cradock. The mystery begins with the discovery of a dead man in a van during the German blitz. Jago recognized the victim, a Mr. Charles Villiers, a magistrate and owner of a printing company. Mr. Villiers had cuts on his wrists, which was consistent with suicide. However, Jago found a stab would on Villiers chest and began treating the case as a murder. Before he could get the police doctor and photographer to the scene of the crime, a German bomb struck the van and obliterated all evidence. Later, Fred Cooper, the last person to see Villiers alive, is also found murdered. As Jago digs into Villiers life, he finds more and more evidence that Mr. Villiers was not a nice man. Villiers was involved in some illegal activities and did all he could to profit from the misery of war. Cooper was a similar man and had a business relationship with Villiers. As is often the case with illegal activities, blackmail was involved and narrowed Jago's suspect list.Meanwhile, the Germans were bombing London on a regular basis. Mike Hollow did a fantastic job of describing the effects of the bombings and the different ways the citizens tried to cope with it. I found this aspect of the book more compelling than the mystery, which was solved by a piece of evidence that the reader was not aware of. Part of the lure of mysteries for me is trying to figure out the who the perpetrator was, which was not possible in this book. But the descriptions of the bombings and the reactions of various characters made up for the weak mystery plot.I did enjoy this book and found it worth my time to read it. It related the reactions to the German bombings very well, and brought to light consequences that I previously had not thought of. I recommend the book on this basis and think it would be enjoyable to any history buff.

It came from a bookstore in London, UK and arrived a week ahead of schedule. I truly enjoy English Police procedurals... and this one did not disappoint. A murder during the London Blitz. And believe it or not life does go on in spite of the Nazi's bombing the city. DCI Jago was a treat. I'd so recommend this book to anyone and everyone. A good read.

As a huge fan of Christian Historical Fiction and debut authors, this book fit great! Mike Hollow writes with authority about England during WWII, police procedures during this time in England, journalism/writing in USA and England during WWII, and life/events during WWI. From the start this book grabbed a hold of me and kept my interest all the way until the end. Mike Hollow definitely kept me on the edge of my seat throughout, twists and turns that kept me surprised until the end. I really enjoyed how Mike Hollow wove together fact and fiction throughout this book. I found myself learning more about WWI and WWII in this book. I love learning more about these times in our world's history. I found the characters well written and very real, especially Detective John Jago. He is a complicated character with his own struggles both personal and professional. I found his process of solving crimes very interesting and I enjoyed learning about him. As I stated above this book really did grab a hold of me from the start, all the way through the end. I loved the twists and turns. As I read this book, I really felt like I was there with Detective Inspector John Jago watching him investigate and solve the murder. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Mystery Fiction, you will not be disappointed. I look forward to reading the rest of the books in this series! I give this book 4 STARS.I received this book from Kregel Publications for no charge in exchange for my honest review of this book. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Fierce's mother has left her pack to become a human. Left behind, Fierce is determined to have nothing to do with humans. But one day she finds a woman who reminds her of her mother in the forest. She hesitates for a moment, just long enough for the woman--Princess Jaleel--to turn her into a human with the wild magic. Soon Fierce is dragged into human concerns about the effects of the misuse of wild magic by Princess Jaleel. Will Fierce choose to be human and save the world or to be a hound again and save herself? "One of my favorite authors." Orson Scott Card Praise for The Princess and the Hound, the first book in this series: "[P]owerful, surprising, moving, and deep. . . The Princess and the Hound is a classic. It defies rules and formulas. It does nothing in the way that other fantasies have taught us to expect. Yet every rule-defying decision by Harrison is exactly right, leading to a breathtakingly right ending." Orson Scott Card "Fans of Robin McKinley, Patricia McKillip, Franny Billingsley, Cornelia Funke and Sherwood Smith should add this to their "must" be read list." Heidi Anne Heiner, SurlaLune Fairy Tales "Not since Tale of Desperaux have I opened a book and wanted to read aloud so much. In her prologue Mette Ivie Harrison evoked exactly the tone and voice of a classic fairy tale in the oral tradition. . ." interactivereader.com For The Princess and the Bear: "The relationships between animal and human, and the magic in being both, are exquisitely delineated, and the love story between the two strong protagonists is all the more powerful for being intensely restrained." Kirkus, starred review. For The Princess and the Snowbird: "Once again, a strong female protagonist, romance, magical adventure and provocative questions will capture teens." Gillian Engberg, Bookilist "Harrison's fairy tales always feel like they are full of untapped depth to me." Melissa Baldwin "The love of the hound and the bear is one for the ages. . . . This unusual princess story is less about castles and gowns and more about characters and journeys." Jessica Harrison, Deseret News Other praise for Mette Ivie Harrison's books: "[A]n extraordinary novel . . . I cannot recommend this novel highly enough . . . Mira, Mirror is one of those rare things - an imaginative fantasy that is also a deep novel about the human spirit. One of the most original, insightful fantasy novels ever written . . .This is a classic; you don't want to miss it." Orson Scott Card Mira, Mirror "grips you from the very first page all the way to the surprising conclusion." Holly Black, author of The Spiderwick Chronicles "Enchanting story . . . Mira is perhaps the most intriguing and complex protagonist ever to grace the pages of a re-told fairy tale. . . .Mira, Mirror is truly original." Amie Rose Rotruck, Children's Literature "Harrison brilliantly recasts a minor prop from the original story as a tragic heroine, and, in doing so, adds a whole new dimension to the tale, for a job well done." 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. great voice, awesome price By Amazon Customer Fierce has been an outcast in her pack ever since her mother left to be a human. As a hound she is fearless and one of the best hunters in her pack, and though she is not treated well by the others in the pack she loves the forest and her life as a hound. Then she is changed into a human by a princess looking for her precious horse. The wild magic that this princess wields so recklessly has endangered the balance of the world. Fissures form in the ground and from them come white worms that eat the life around them and then imitate it to cause destruction.Fierce arrives at the nearest human residence to somehow make a life among humans. There she discovers Red, the boy who cares for the hounds. He wishes to learn the language of the hounds, and Fierce finds it comforting to spend time with the other hounds. As they form an acquaintance a woman comes to ask the Lord of the manor for help when the wandering princess turns her husband and daughter into animals. The Lord turns his back on her plea, but Fierce knows that this princess must be stopped and so she and Red go after her.Convincing a spoiled princess to change her behavior is quite a challenge, as well as facing the worm creatures that are now traveling the forest and harming people. They must return them from the fissures they came from before they alter the world permanently, but such a task requires great cost from those that fight the substance.I am really loving the fact that authors are now independently putting up books in series that their publishers dropped, because it means I got to read another Princess/Hound book by Mette Harrison. The price recently went down to 99 cents, which is a total steal! I was so excited when the book went down to that price and snatched it up immediately. In fact, it is still at that price right now. If you are interested in the book at all you should consider picking it up while the price is still low.I always find something that annoys me in these books, yet I always keep coming back to them because I really do love the voice of the series. This book also has that wonderful fairy tale feeling, and yet still feels substantive. The author often combines vivid emotions and profound views of human nature, but does it in a way that comes naturally from the world and characters. It also has the interesting romance story that managed to feel the same, but still ended up having a twist that surprised me. For some reason I find the human changed into an animal or vice versa to be a very interesting romance trope in the series. The author managed to find so much tension and conflict in how such a dramatic change affects the characters and how that plays out in the romance plot line.My complaint is that the world felt a little bit fuzzy to me. Some of the scenes felt odd in that I felt like the setting faded. A entire mob came into the forest to confront the Princess and the her entourage, but I wasn't exactly sure how they all fit in between the trees enough to have the confrontation the author described. There were several other examples of that where I felt the author was so focused on telling the story she forgot the little background details that makes a story feel sharp and clear.Despite that I still really enjoyed the book and really enjoyed the story and the characters. Totally worth reading if you are a fairy tale fiction fan.

Fierce is a hound and runs in a pack that doesn't really accept her very well. Her mom has abandoned her to become human and she has hard feelings toward humans. She is quite alone but stays with her pack because that is all she has known. Then she meets the Princess with her wild magic. Her life changes from that point on.The thing I love about he The Princess and the Horse is that once again there are wonderful characters and a great tale with twists and turns. I love this princess. She is spunky and full of wild magic. I love Fierce too. The characters seem so real to me and I enjoy looking into their hearts and knowing more about them.Great enjoyable story that I will read again I am sure.

How magic can take over By Kindle Customer Becca A story of how magic corrupted a princess and the efforts of her victims to reverse it and her conversion back to good. She turns animals into humans and humans into animals and keeps them with her, believing she is always right.Writen mainly with the interesting viewpoint of a hound who has been turned into a human against her will.Happy ending and a little more surprise at the end.

By Victoria Pitts Caine Adventure begins to unfold for young Marc when he first finds the haunted tree. Its power both draws him and frightens him. He learns that he, too, has powers of his own.Recovering from the Ice Age, Britannia emerges to reconstruct and survive. Food is sparse and rival tribes many. An evil king plots to take over and Marc will cross the path of the king’s lackeys all too soon. The Wizard Oren brings Marc and his friend Valeria into the world of magic teaching them skills and secrets. While Marc discovers his path in life, he and Valeria realize there’s a different kind of magic growing between them, but first there’s a kingdom to defend and Marc may not survive the battle. It is obvious Mr. Scheller has taken years to hone his craft. Haunted Tree is heart stopping and a resounding page turner, yet there’s a well thought out plot and underlying meaning to the story. The characters are carefully developed and the descriptive prose holds the reader’s attention far beyond the last page. Well done.

Characters are so and so, especially the main female who felt like a romantic tool for Marc. Now the long version. The language is good, evocative but not pompous, fluid and well-honed. Good job to the author. The action scenes are brief and reasonable, mostly, and the tension is good. The pacing could be improved, tension goes down too often for too long. What really put me off is the Christian theme so explicit. When characters continuously say "God bless you", "God bless me", "Thank God for that", while living in a kind of apocalyptic context, that seems absolutely unrealistic to me. That's when the worst gets out of people, and they might plead forgiveness to God or Gods but with fear, resentment, desperation: not with overflowing gratefulness. Those kind of expressions are put as common sayings, yes, but are also present in the introspective bits of all main characters. It sounds to me like the author's belief system got too involved in the tale, at the expense of internal coherence. There is also another thing that needs work: character development.Marc is too scared/afraid of magic, unreasonably so since he greatly respects the wizard Oren. Now, either he shouldn't be so afraid, or he should not respect Oren so much. There needs to be a reconciliation between these two, but I didn't see it. Yes, later this changes under Oren's tutelage, but I find the "premise" unrealistic.Valeria is a bit stereotyped, and she kind of acts like Marc's support only. She dearly loves him, she helps him out, she quench his fears. She's a mother-wife before being even romantically involved with him. I prefer strong, well characterised women in my fiction. To conclude, I think the author has potential and the next novels will probably be stronger. However, I doubt I'll be buying the sequel of this. Not my cup of tea.

By Megan A creative tale of hardship in a mysterious past. Marc and his village struggle to survive after an endless winter has fallen on the land. When times are particularly hard, Marc ventures near the Forbidden Vale, a murky wood that houses rumors of death. An accident forces Marc to become sensitive to the magic all around, drawing the attention of the powerful wizard that protects the village. Regardless of his intentions, Marc grows in strength, as a man...and a magician. The setting is Roman-esque England, with hints of Robin Hood and a dash of Merlin and Chiron! It's a little slow to start, but I particularly enjoyed the relationship between Marc and the wizard Oren; the story seems to really hit its stride when the tutelage begins. Marc grows as a wizard, as a leader, and as a man, swearing to find his father's killer, and giving in to his feelings for his friend Valeria. It reminded me of a blend of The Once and Future King and The Clan of the Cave Bear.

Poll The first volume of The Clandestine Exploits of a Werewolf was something I was anticipating for a long time, and it did not disappoint. This book tells the tale of an immortal werewolf, by the name of Ethan Garraint, who was present at the fall of Montsegur. He is on a vendetta to find and kill a priest that betrayed the Cathers on Montsegur and ensured their fall. They've been battling throughout the centuries and now they meet once more on the streets of New Orleans. This is yet another fantastic tale by Evelyn Klebert that will have you on the edge of your seat the entire time.

Set in a plantation in the Solomon Islands, it is blatantly racist towards the natives and started off with describing a disgusting disease which had infected many of them. Even the British plantation owner, who was the only white man there, had symptoms of the disease but he still needed to maintain discipline over his black workers who were recruited for five-year stints and paid very low wages. I cringed at the description of the disease and I cringed at the description of the discipline, but frankly, I couldn't stop reading.Written in 1911, this is a novel about a time and a place. It is also a story of a romance. And a story about a young beautiful liberated American woman named Joan who was raised free and wild in Hawaii, taught to captain a ship, handle a rough crew, and resist marital entanglements. When her ship runs adrift on the plantation owner's property, he naturally falls head over heels in love with her. What follows is nothing short of high adventure and I can well understand the title of this short 190 page novel. There are worker uprisings, long treks through the jungle, murder, revenge, a duel between two white men and a wild assortment of shady characters. The story moves fast and gives quite a sordid picture of life in the Solomon Islands at time. It is a hard life for everybody and yet, as Jack London describes it, is also a life of high adventure as well as a great example of the work of this author.

If you're a Jack London fan you will not be dissapointed By Phil Jack London’s detailed knowledge of the subjects he writes about astounds me, this level of detail can not be dreamed up, it must come from his real experience and to have been out amongst the world that he writes about is what I find most amazing as are the characters he discusses – never a dull moment. If Jack London were alive today I’d absolutely want to spend some time with

An average length book full of interesting facets and offshoots of activity that flow out into what I think is a masterpiece of story telling. The title, "Adventure," is most cleverly chosen and fits perfectly the "drift" of the narrative. I enjoyed it very much.

How is this book unique?

Formatted for E-Readers, Unabridged & Original version. You will find it much more comfortable to read on your device/app. Easy on your eyes. Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography At the historic pageant in Washington, when the remains of President Lincoln were being taken from the White House to the Capitol, a carriage immediately preceding the catafalque was assigned to me. Outside were the crowds, the martial music, but inside the carriage I was plunged in deep self-communion, until aroused by a gentle tap at the window of my carriage door. An officer of high rank put his head inside and exclaimed: "Dr. Leale, I would rather have done what you did to prolong the life of the President than to have accomplished my duties during the entire war." I shrank back at what he said, and for the first time realized the importance of it all. As soon as I returned to my private office in the hospital, I drew down the window-shade, locked the door, threw myself prostrate on the bare wood floor and asked for advice. The answer came as distinctly as if spoken by a human being present: "Forget it all." I visited our Surgeon General, Joseph K. Barnes, and asked his advice; he also said: "Cast it from your memory."

33 of 33 people found the following review helpful. a speech written by the first doctor on the scene By A Customer i purchased this out of an interest in learning more about the scene of LIncoln's death. Leale gives some backstory about how he came to be at Ford's theatre and the moments before Lincoln's assassination as well as his immediate involvement in treating the dying president there after. He also describes the actions of the people around him. including Mary Todd. Some of the information is heartbreaking but is at times delivered in the very detatched manner of a doctor describing his medical methods, with fair amounts of religious comments and a bit of self-puffing peppered throughout.Leale is very descriptive and after reading this i felt as though i had actually been there. Though it is short, LINCOLN'S LAST HOURS is a speech after all and i found it well worth the read.

I believe it was written by the attending physician, upon the assassination of Lincoln. Any history buff will find this first-hand account fascinating, simply because you get to be at the scene of the crime, through the eyes of the author. The book is very short. I picked it up on my Kindle, so I'm not sure, but it may be basically a periodical.
