3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. great characters. By Anorak1229 MUCH Better than 'Cold Mountain'I enjoyed the Hattie Caraway book by the same author because it contained a lot of information about a little-known woman that I found interesting and even inspiring. So I got this one about the Civil War. Wow, I’m glad I did! I learned so much about American history, things I never heard of, and wondered why they are so little-known. ‘Gone with The Wind’ meets ‘Titanic’ is truly the perfect description of what the book is about. It’s based on true facts, and even includes a reference section in back with nonfiction books about things like the plot to burn New York City, Confederate secret agents, the fate of the steamboat Sultana, and even Women Civil War soldiers. I had no idea, and if you don’t know about these things, this is the right book for you because the information is presented so well through the main characters. No stereotypes, just interesting. Along with little-known facts, the fictionalized composite main characters are engaging. I found myself close to tears in several spots, but somehow the book manages to be uplifting and inspiring. I am recommending it to my book club. There are several themes that will make for a good discussion. I loved this book and think others will too. It is much better than 'Cold Mountain.' Waiting for the movie!

However, this little misstep did little to diminish the story and the effort that went into it. The author has perfected the art of character development to a degree seldom found in any work of fiction. Every major character was introduced in a logical progression and not overdone. For a writer of historical fiction to be able to master this degree of character development is a rarity. I would recommend this book to anyone that has an interest in the 19th century, particularly The Civil War. The work holds one's interest by avoiding being bogged down by time and place by keeping the story and its characters in a steady, headlong progression toward its tragic conclusion.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An excellent historical novel. By Shawshank A very good read. I especially appreciated learning about the Sultana tragedy and the related backstory of the graft and corruption that allowed this disaster to be the largest ever maritime loss in American history. The author also opens up a new perspective of the Jewish people caught in the middle of a war. Well written and wort your time for a very good historical novel.

The Path of Ravens (Asgard vs. Aliens Book 1), by P.K. Lentz

Review PRE-PUBLICATION PRAISE FOR THE PATH OF RAVENS:"In some ways it's one of my favorite manuscripts of the past few years, and I'm dying to read the sequel.  [PK Lentz is] on the highest professional level when it comes to creating a scene, whether it's a blood and guts action scene or a tender scene of hairwashing.... [T]hose kick-ass female characters ... are among my favorites of all time. This one is perhaps the best because [he shows] such genius in creating all the complexities of her character ... without giving her a single word of dialogue. This is a bravura performance." - R. G., early reader & SF/F publishing industry veteran "This is as good if not better than any epic novel that I have ever had the pleasure to read....  I am a fan and cannot wait for more. Thanks for the ride." - Norman M., decades-long SF/F reader, older than most rocks.

From the Author The Path of Ravens is suitable for readers from 13 to 113.

Gray Mix together a little Greek mythology and some Nordic Mythology, then throw in a dose of sci-fi creatures and you have a good start on The Path of Ravens by P.K. Lentz. This is a great, action packed fantasy adventure that kept me glued to its pages. The author did a great job of developing a storyline that never slowed down. It was full of fast paced action and adventure. The plot twists were just enough to keep me on my reading toes. I really like the way the author put it all together and made it seem so real. The characters in the book were easy to identify with and follow. P. K. Lentz has developed a cast of heroes and heroines that I found myself following as an unseen member of the team.I really enjoyed reading The Path of Ravens by P. K. Lentz and I highly recommend this book to all readers.

Unpredictable, Poetic, Full of Action By Cave Canem I read Athenian Steel and LOVED it, so decided to read The Path of Ravens -- and I was not disappointed.PK shows that he has other tricks up his sleeve, as this is a different tone from Athenian Steel, but the writing is beautiful. The characters of this drama coming to life at the beginning, after crossing worlds (in a way) is wonderfully described.Thamoth's hazy obsession with Ayessa culminates in one of the most interesting denouements I have ever had the pleasure to read.PK is never obvious and never predictable, but somehow delivers something even better than we might have hoped. There is a lot of mythology in PoR, Norse, Greek -- you name it.It's a tour de force of erudition, great writing and fantastic characters. You won't regret reading it.

But sometimes you stumble on something so good it just has to be shared. I was absolutely thrilled to discovers this writer. When it comes to the craft of story telling, PK Lentz is a true artisan. In this book, The Path of Ravens, he weaves the threads of Norse and Greek mythology together with a cast from Atlantis..and a host of evil aliens bent on world destruction, to create the fabric of an epic adventure that transcends space and time..don't miss it.

WWII hero Samuel Gable has weeks to live. Eighty-eight years old, his body ravaged by cancer, he's full of unrest for reasons that have nothing to do with the horrid disease. He has secrets to divulge, and local writer Pete Swift agrees to document what he assumes are a few tales of war. As Samuel recalls perilous days spent in the jungles of the South Pacific, however, Pete begins to live vicariously through Samuel's stories. A kinship grows as the saga moves from the deadly battlefield to one of the great love stories of all time, as Samuel recalls his love affair with Callie, the dark-haired beauty he fell in love with before being shipped off to war. Samuel's stories weave the past and the present, and the reasons for his unrest begin to unfold. Pete comes to learn that Samuel's son, Caleb, left home abruptly 30 years ago due to a tragic accident that ripped the family apart. Meanwhile Pete finds himself drawn to Samuel's daughter, Gabby, who moved back home to take care of her dying father. With Pete, Gabby has a shoulder to cry on and a diversion from the impending death that awaits her father. Their chemistry sets up a passionate collision course that threatens to undermine Samuel and Pete's relationship, not to mention Pete's marriage. Both Samuel and Pete are burdened by situation and circumstance but for entirely different reasons. Set in a backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Tennessee, these unlikely friends are in a race against time to heal the wounds of their hearts.

I was able to develop a close connection with the characters in the story. The author allowed me to feel the same emotions as the characters; I laughed, I cried, and felt connected to the lives portrayed. I wanted to shake some sense into Pete once or twice. This book would make a very successful movie. I am going to look for more books by this same author.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A story of Value and Redemption By North Carolina Girl The book is about values and redemption. The values of our mothers and fathers in the World War II era and the values of their offspring - the boomers and their children. It is a book that reminds us that some things do not necessarily progress and get better. It reminds us that family and relationships of those close to us is what life is really about. That is the secret that the generation of World War II had learned when they returned home from war and that is the secret that is relearned in this novel. What an excellent read! A heartwarming story of two families on the surface with layers of additional meaning beneath.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Buy this book today! By cmmiller "A Month of Tomorrows" is a novel that juxtaposes two very different time periods: a world of honor and romance in the 1940s where family and good food is all you need to make it through the day; and the world of a modern day writer too busy in his own universe to see much beyond the keys of his laptop. Samuel Gable the WWII veteran and dream husband and father, dying too soon from cancer (even in his old age), befriends Pete Swift, the struggling writer reluctantly taking on the task of recording Gable's story to leave as a family memento. Though reluctant to help at first, Pete is drawn into Samuel's amazing journey during the war, ensnared by the love story that follows his return, and puzzled by a dark secret in the Gable family."A Month of Tomorrows" is a tribute to soldiers and family and is a love letter to small towns and small life in Tennessee. It's a book about human transformation, love, and loss. The novel transcends literary genres and has a little something for every reader. I highly recommend this novel.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Tragedy to Vengeance By Janet Kilgore Jane Thompson's latest book is set in Nazi Germany. The suspenseful plot is set in motion by the T-4 Program, the Nazis' euthanasia program designed to get rid of the mentally and physically disabled. They described them as "useless eaters" and "life unworthy of life," and included the blind, anyone with any degree of mental illness, epileptics, prostitutes, and juvenile delinquents. The main character, who is bi-polar, escapes from a sanitarium just in time to avoid being gassed with the other patients. She becomes involved with the resistance in Germany and is eventually forced to flee for her life to Portugal. After many adventures, she eventually makes her way to England, where she vows to tell Eisenhower, the Allied commander, what is going on in Germany and get him to act on the information.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Despite All Odds By Sylvia D. Smith Jane Thomson’s best book so far, this narrative fiction takes the reader into the heart and horror of Nazi Germany where Hitler and his regime slaughters anyone viewed as imperfect—like the mentally ill. Claudia suffers from manic-depressive episodes and her family seeks treatment for her in a mental hospital. She isn’t there long before soldiers rush in and load patients into buses, and take them to be slaughtered. Swift thinking helps Claudia escape certain death. Driven to help those who can’t help themselves, she joins the resistance. Claudia refuses to settle for doing nothing, despite her precarious mental condition, and fights her way through seemingly insurmountable odds to do what she can to help those at risk.Thompson does an excellent job taking the reader behind the lines of Nazi, Germany and into the horror many Germans experienced, but who were helpless to resist.

She can’t control her thoughts and is given to falling into public rants denigrating Hitler and the Nazi regime. Her family commits her to an asylum for her own protection where her tirades will be dismissed as mere delusions of a troubled person. But they are not aware Hitler has plans for the elimination of weak and imperfect people. SS troops raid the asylum and take away the inmates. In a lucid moment Claudia runs, instinctually knowing that she is in imminent danger. In the freezing cold without resources, she is forced to piece together the puzzle of Hitler’s dreadful plan.Applied biology, by Jane Thompson, is a fast moving, terse presentation through the eyes of a bi-polar fugitive in Nazi Germany.

In 2067 the asteroid Jurbay severs the continent, amputating 22 western states and submerging them into the Pacific Ocean in the course of a day. Sixteen years later, caught in the 2083 post-apocalyptic world, Avery DeTornada, the 22 year old daughter of great leaders, struggles to step into leadership herself and release her community from the domination of The Third. Avery and her comrades Shaw, McGinty and Pasha operate undercover, working in the city of Reichel within the oppressive government of The Third. Their undercover status allows them to work quietly, developing covert strategies to assimilate information and pass it on to the others in The 28 United rebellion. Avery and her team have no idea how many of those loyal to the 28 United there are, and without that information it is impossible to move on to the next step of opposing The Third. In a dystopian society The Third successfully obtains the allegiance of its citizens by removing their memories of family and home, creating a need for misplaced devotion. The Third suspects there may be those inside their ranks that believe in an alternative government based on the outdated workings of democracy. They acknowledge the only way to root out the rebels is to place GEBs (genetically engineered beings) among the workers to uncover those disloyal. The Third secretly replaces chosen citizens with GEBs who collect information and report back to The Third. Avery discovers two of her own have been replaced, and by purposely getting herself arrested she is able to find and free Shaw and Pasha who join up with her and McGinty. Once The Third discovers the rebels have escaped they become the hunted and flee for Red Grove, the command center of The 28 United. Along the way they collect a ragtag army of dump pickers, library boys and minstrels, coming face to face with the creatures of the dump, the brainswappers of the forest and the effects of the 14 Deadlies. Avery meets Raben, a leader among the dump pickers. Through their intense escape, the danger of rebellion and the growth of The 28 United Raben and Avery find a love for each other, but Avery struggles with letting go of her longtime friend, McGinty and reconciling her feelings for him that have always bordered on more than friendship. Once they arrive at Red Grove Avery DeTornada says, “If only we knew how many loyal ones we are dealing with. Is it a hundred? A thousand? Ten thousand? With a hundred we are only trying to hide, avoid The Third and maybe convince them that we are no threat. With a thousand we might attempt planting a few more subterraneans inside The Third. But with ten thousand we form an army. With ten thousand we go to war. We have to get a count—have a roll call.” Pasha discovers how to send a secret message to The 28 United rebels and hundreds show up at Red Grove. After being compromised by GEBs, Avery realizes she must send the loyal ones up to the New Coastline to colonize and train for battle while she, McGinty, Shaw and Pasha return once more inside The Third, this time undercover in the night patrol, collecting valuable information for an offensive plan. After capturing Degnan, a scientist and doctor on the outs with The Third, Avery and the others join in an unholy alliance with Degnan, living by day in his hidden tunnel adjoining the GEB lab. They discover sinkholes sucking down sections of the city. There are secrets in the caverns of the History Labyrinth deep underground. Will Avery and her friends be able to escape The Third before they are discovered? With The Third on the verge of recognizing the rebels in their midst and Avery getting closer to the discovery of The Third’s battle plans, an army of four inside The Third isn’t enough. Who will stand with Avery DeTornada against The Third in hopes of restoring balance to the world, allowing The 28 United to rule with justice and eliminating the tyranny of The Third?

Roll Call: Book #1 in the Roll Call Trilogy (Volume 1), by Gwen Mansfield

Review "Mansfield begins her new trilogy by dropping readers into a future that's as propulsive as it is miserable. In marvelous, staccato prose, she describes Avery's world ... Although the novel is aimed at young adults, sophisticated jolts of turmoil charge the narrative, as when Avery has 'lost the time to let beauty perform its work on [her] spirit.' Overall, this masterful series opener is in better company with William Gibson's Neuromancer than safer fare such as The Hunger Games. An exhilarating ride full of sheer drops and whiplash curves." --Kirkus Reviews

About the Author Gwen Mansfield loves words, and the thought of a good story sends ideas capering through her mind until they settle down into characters, settings and plot. This is her first novel in the young adult genre. The surprises she found on the pages of book #1 in this post-apocalyptic trilogy made it impossible to say goodbye to Avery DeTornada and her comrades. Book #2, Inside the Third (available in December 2015) and #3, Reluctant Warriors bring the characters back to war against The Third with determination that The 28 United will stand. Gwen completed her BA in theatre from Seattle Pacific University, her MA in theatre from Central Washington University and her MFA in Creative Writing from University of New Orleans. She lives in the Northwest with her husband and children. She is the author of the historical fiction Experiment Station Road, the musical Resistance and the stage plays: Grace Diner, Experiment Station Road, and You’ve Got 90 Seconds.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. 'When someone is replaced by a GEB what happens to the original?' By Grady Harp Pacific Northwest author Gwen Mansfield published her debut novel, EXPERIMENT STATION ROAD, in 2011, an adult historical fiction novel that dealt with social issues of cultural discrimination. Now she begins her trilogy on a post-apocalyptic theme written for young adults. In addition to writing novels she also is a playwright, not surprising when we note that she received her BA in theatre from Seattle Pacific University, her MA in theatre arts from Central Washington University, and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of New Orleans!Gwen's writing style is concise, never dawdling for unnecessary information that would clutter her action packed adventure. The manner in which she designs her `post-apocalyptic' zone is a bit too credible for comfort with the current environmental changes we see in the news daily (tornadoes, earthquakes, tsunamis in unusual locales, etc), but with the author's attention to detail and to character development it is obvious that that is her intention. She explains her locale and cast of characters well, even in the opening paragraphs: `DeTornada. That name and the legacy of leadership has been on my back, haunted me and tracked me down for most of my life. It sets me apart from others left on earth, and I hate it. Twenty-two is too young and too inexperienced to be thrust toward the front of the pack. The asteroid Jurbay fell and sliced us in half. Those of us who remained, The 28 United, now oppose The Third-- the rulership in power. But disaster doesn't care about enemies, and it doesn't discriminate against foes. It rips who it wants from comfort, from family, from purpose-- from life. Looking back on our shared catastrophe I realize, even with an enemy, disaster offers us something in common. Somewhere around mid-century the two parties of polar opposites within The United, our political world, forgot to watch their backs. Subtly, and with muchcharisma, The Third slithered in while the fighting wolves tore themselves apart in the government arenas of the Senate, the House and the Oval Office. And pretty soon there wasn't any Senate or House or Oval Office because Commander Dorsey slipped in the back door of power and assumed the front seat of command.'To clarify the complex plot, in 2067 the asteroid Jurbay severs the continent, amputating 22 western states and submerging them into the Pacific Ocean in the course of a day. Sixteen years later, caught in the 2083 post-apocalyptic world, 22-year-old Avery DeTornada and her comrades Shaw, McGinty, and Pasha operate undercover, working in the city of Reichel within the oppressive government of The Third. After discovery, they escape and are hunted, fleeing for Red Grove, the command center of The 28 United. Along the way, the rebels collect a ragtag army of dump pickers, library boys, and minstrels, but it's not enough. Who will stand with Avery DeTornada against The Third, guaranteeing The 28 United will remain? In a relative short novel Gwen has placed all the characters that will define a trilogy clearly in context and has allowed us to know them, care about them, feel the discovery of love amidst the devastation they face, most important for a proposed trilogy, glued us to their futures and the development of the plot she has so carefully carved. A fine Young Adults novel, this. Grady Harp, April 15

This is definitely one of those. It's 2083, sixteen years since an asteroid hit the earth, wiping out almost half of the United States, leaving only 28. In the aftermath of this cataclysm, a totalitarian government has taken control. Now, a small group of rebels, calling themselves The 28 United struggle to overthrow this government.Gwen Mansfield handles the struggles that these young people face with aplomb. Not just the physical struggles of working as spies, or running from an all powerful government, or dealing with death and murder...but the struggles that come with finding themselves in places of leadership, having to make decisions that may cost lives, and will definitely set up precedents in the new world that they are trying to create. Young Avery DeToranada says it best when she asks herself, "....what will we hand them? (the young ones of this current regime) A wandering existence that eventually must take a violent stand in hopes of a future that holds integrity as sacred?" When I read that line I thought that that is very much what I want for my kids and grand kids, a future that holds integrity as sacred. The characters in Roll Call are willing to pay any price to provide that future.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Can't Wait for Book #2 By Renee Spicuzza I absolutely love getting into a book that is connected by means of a trilogy or set because my devotion to characters can live on in future pieces of literature, which is just one reason behind why I liked this book. Roll Call follows Avery, a young adult destined to take charge during a post-apocalyptic era where tyranny has run rampant. During her quest to save two comrades, Avery discovers secrets that could change the way in which everyone lives in this newly destroyed world. This book definitely follows an apocalyptic like genre, which I have recently been reading and enjoying because each novel is unique to the genre. The societal systems that Gwen Mansfield has created within Roll Call, as well as the dynamic between characters make for a very interesting plot line that made me question whether or not our future could ever come to such a desolate position. The way in which Mansfield wrote her world is so believable because it is based on habitat destruction, a problem that we face in modern times and this could always become a problem in the future, so the book acts as a gateway towards acknowledgment of some of the changes that need to be enacted while still being a very interesting and entertaining novel.

That being said, I feel like this story has so much potential and could've been taken further. I feel like there were just some pieces missing. I feel like there is more in Rebecca Davis! Let it out!

Hardly a page went by that didn't have an editing error. It was frustrating to read. The story is sweet but I didn't connect with the characters. The fun part of the relationship is alluded to in book 1 with this story being about hardship and love enduring. In my opinion this isn't a finished novel.

But the amount of typos took over the enjoyment of the story. Who proofreads these ? And through instead of threw. On and on, finally I gave up. Pity it was a good story.

Hope is an illusion meant to convince the broken to keep on living. That’s me. Broken. My father pays heaps of money for doctors at the Norfolk Psychiatric Center to fix me. I’ve spent six months of my prime teenage years at this residential facility – a place for teenagers who’ve gone mental. That’s me. Mental. Just when I begin to feel myself fade away, a boy with a wolfish smile and mischievous eyes reels me in. Julian is broken too, but he believes in me enough for the both of us. Through him, I begin to experience this thing called hope. Doctors can’t fix me, my parents can’t either, but maybe it’s not me who needs fixing. After all, mental is only a state of mind. It all depends on who’s doing the thinking. "MENTAL is a frightening yet hopeful story about a girl struggling for a little bit of normal with a fragile mind that’s anything but. Set in a hospital, Lucy meets Julian, who teaches her that normalcy is relative." - Patty Blount, author of TMI and Some Boys.

Review "MENTAL is a frightening yet hopeful story about a girl struggling for a little bit of normal with a fragile mind that's anything but. Set in a hospital, Lucy meets Julian, who teaches her that normalcy is relative." - Patty Blount, author of TMI and Some Boys. "This was a great read for me in between my usual fare (which almost never includes teen fiction). I would recommend it to anyone looking to understand serious mental illness better, but need a ray of light to keep them going." -- Under the Covers Reviews

From the Author EXCERPT:He leads me around a corner then stops in front of each door in an administrative hallway, looking for somewhere safe to hide. Most of the rooms have someone typing away at a computer. They look curious but mostly ignore us. Finally, we come across a janitor's closet. He yanks me in then slams the door shut. It's cramped and smells like bleach but still somehow romantic. Julian kicks the mop bucket to the side and we stare at each other, grinning and panting. "Are you sure you're real?" I ask, a little breathless. He raises his brows. "Don't you mean, are you sure I'm real?" Awestruck, I shake my head. "I don't know." He laughs then takes my face in his hands, but his expression sobers as he gazes down at me. "I'll never let anyone hurt you again, Lucy." He says this as if he has any control of it, as if it's his fault anyone has. It's intense and makes me feel funny - fluttery stomach and pounding heart funny. If he's not real, I don't want to know it. The small overhead light shadows part of his face but I can still see the intent in his eyes. He's going to kiss me. I don't close my eyes this time. I have no idea what I'm doing so if I screw it up, which I probably will, and he never kisses me again, I want to remember it. His breath smells minty, like he just brushed his teeth. His hands are warm on my cheeks. He closes his eyes, and leans in. Our lips touch. His are hot and soft and wet, and so much better than I ever expected. My mouth falls open, letting him guide me. Teeth graze my bottom lip and sparks shoot all over my body like little fire crackers that have just been awakened. I feel daring and excited and scared all at once. He drops his hands from my face and starts to pull away. I boldly follow then wrap my arms around his neck to keep him still. I'm not ready for this to end. He smiles against my mouth and I laugh. He chuckles too and we're lost in each other. Lost in minty kisses and the danger of hiding in a broom closet. It's unconventional, but somehow the best place for a first kiss. Urgent voices and footsteps sound like they're coming our way. Without missing a beat, Julian reaches up and pulls on the string that plunges us into darkness. His arms tighten around me and my body presses against his. I'm hyperaware that we're touching, all over, not just our hands or lips. I respond hungrily, rising on tiptoes to kiss harder, deeper, feel more of him. In the pitch black of that cleaning room, I learn an important lesson. Life is too scary and goddamn depressing not to make the most of the small moments of happiness we can find. This is a crack in the wall of my dismal existence. With Julian wrapped around me, his lips moving against mine, I finally feel the sun.

Outstanding realism By janine gardner I received an ARC for my honest review.Mental was a gut wrenching, head spinning, extremely hard read for me because a lot of Lucy's issues hit home in a way that brought up a lot of thoughts that I have tried to suppress. But any book and author that can wring those emotions out of me is an extraordinary one. I would recommend this book to anyone who doesn't understand what it's like to have a mental illness. To those who think you can simply "snap out of it". Justice does a fantastic job at portraying the realism of what goes on in the mind of someone with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and paranoia. She also shows how, no matter how much those on the outside get frustrated having to deal with it, the person going down that rabbit hole hates it the worst.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. I hate thinking up titles, but loved this book. By Lina Sacher I truly enjoyed editing Mental. It was such an easy book to read and get sucked into -- it didn't feel like work at all. The characters came to life. And I found it very easy to relate to Lucy and her plight, despite never having suffered a similar condition. The descriptions were very vivid and it was very easy, as a reader, to become invested in the outcome of the story. I love Justice Serai's style and voice, so maybe I'm a little biased, but if I love it, I'm sure others do too. I would highly recommend this book to YA lovers.

By Rhonda Lane Hospitalized for schizophrenia, teenage Lucy finds hope in a friendship with a boy also in treatment but for an eating disorder. Their friendship blossoms into a chaste love. (Secret kisses, but nothing below the neck, FWIW.)When we meet her, the hospital has given her a plummy assignment - to paint a mural. She's a jumble of eagerness and ambivalence, and then she's thrown off by new patient Julian who wants to make friends with her. After all, no one else her age wants to be friends with her. What's wrong with him?Her family is supportive but frustrated, and adding to the tension is Lucy is sensitive to subtext. Her parents react in a realistic fashion. Good thing they have deep pockets and can afford to put her in a "nice" hospital. One thing I loved about MENTAL is we see Lucy's logic behind her episodes. They never felt like spontaneous rantings and outbursts. I also enjoyed the epigrams leading off each chapter, quotes about madness and then madness via love and creativity.

Eighteen-year-old Kricket Hollowell was looking for her place in the world when she discovered that the universe was bigger—and more dangerous—than she had ever dreamed. Now, whisked across space to the planet Ethar, Kricket learns that her genetic ability to see the future makes her a sought-after commodity…and the catalyst for war between her star-crossed parents’ clans. According to Alameedan prophecy, one house will rise to power and the other will be completely wiped out, and Kricket’s precognition is believed to be the weapon that will tip the scales.

A target of both the Rafe and the Alameeda houses, Kricket finds protection—and a home—in the arms of Trey, her Etharian bodyguard-turned-boyfriend. But her visions of what’s to come disturb her deeply, especially since she must discover whether the gift of foresight will allow her to rewrite the future, or if her fate is as immovable as the stars.

It all starts with the murder of a powerful political figure. When Kricket is arrested and accused of the murder, anyone loyal to her is deemed a traitor. When Trey and all Kricket's friends refuse to give information or turn on Kricket, they too are arrested and tortured for information. As if they didn't have enough to worry about, Kyon is revived by an Alameeda Priestess and is more determined than ever to claim Kricket as his own. When Kyon issues a declaration of war against anyone who does not immediately turn over Kricket, the whole Planet finds themselves choosing a side. Ethar is now at war. Kricket, Trey, and all their friends must find a way not only to escape from jail, but must also depend on Kricket's unreliable ability to see the future in order to stay one step ahead of Kyon and all who wish to use Kricket as a bargaining chip. As war rages, Kricket and her friends find themselves on the run from new enemies as well as old as they fight for their lives. In the end, Kricket and Trey will have to decide how much they are willing to risk to be together. This book is darker and more passionate than the first book. The innocence of the first book is lost as the characters brace themselves for the devastation that accompanies war. This book was beautifully written. The only downside is for those who hate cliffhangers, i will warn this one ends with a big one! I will be biting my nails waiting for the next installment!

The books must be read in order to understand the series. I received an ARC from NetGalley. If you are familiar with Mrs. Bartol’s books, you know how her books are much more than words on a page. You know that they are poetry, written with a detail that is like no other author out there. They take you to an imaginary world so rich, you forget where you are.The book starts out where Under Different Stars leaves off. Kricket and Trey are getting ready to meet with Skye Command with Wayra and Jax. They believe that Kricket is going to be safe there. Kricket starts to have visions of the future and it doesn’t look good for her. The Rafian politicians are planning games with Kricket’s, Trey’s and the rest of the Cavar’s lives. To make matters worse, Kyon still wants Kricket to own as his consort and will stop at nothing to get her, including killing every Rafe on the planet. The story is “on the edge of your seat” action right from the beginning. There are aircraft chases, prison breakouts, sky-pack fights, drones, weapon fights and hand to hand combat. You meet new characters such as Giffen that has some handy powers of his own. You get to see some of the other priestess’s powers. The priestess’ are very interesting. I look forward to meeting the bird and the flower.About 50% in, we get some down time with Trey and Kricket. The scenes are perfect, well written and done in a way that Mrs. Bartol can. You lose yourself in their romance. Wow, Trey is perfect. Not only is he beautiful with his dark hair and violet eyes, but his soul is too. He loves with fierceness that I have only seen a few books. Kricket does at times remind me of another character of Mrs. Bartol’s, Genevieve Clairmont. She wants to keep everyone safe even if that requires her to sacrifice herself. The end is heartbreaking. Everything Kricket has ever wanted is taken from her. Everything she has led to believe was a lie. It is a cliff hanger ending. It will leave you with a book hangover. But it has never felt so good to be hung over.

Can't get enough By I Feel the Need, the Need to Read book blog I have loved Amy Bartol's books since I began reading the Premonition series way back when. However, when I started reading Under Different Stars, I was even more enamored with her. Yes, I love Evie and Reed and the rest of the gang, but there is something about Kricket and Trey and the world of Erath that speaks to my soul. Yes, you read right. This series affected me differently than the Premonition series. I'll try to explain it as best as I can.I think for me, the love between Trey and Kricket feels more emotionally driven and passionate. Some may argue that point with me, but read book 2 first before you comment. Amy intensified this in Sea of Stars. It's not that she takes their relationship to a new level, it's that she gets into the tiny little cracks and crevices of it. She puts a voice to their feelings and you can actually feel the little intricacies of their love. You can tell that she pours emotion into her writing and that there is a truth behind the words. The relationship feels real. Both Trey and Kricket are intelligent, strong, and I feel like I'm reading about real people.I said she took their relationship farther and she does. The way that she progresses their relationship to a more intimate place is beautiful. I was telling her that I was glad that she moved things to a physical relationship because it was time. If she had done the whole "Twilight" thing where they waited until marriage, it wouldn't have felt real and would have been groan and eye roll inducing. You can't be that intensely close to someone and go through the roller coaster that they have and NOT take it farther. I loved the scenes that she wrote. I thought they were alluring, romantic, sensual, and absolutely perfect. I know Amy is worried about the reaction to these moments by her readers, but I believe that it will all be for naught.Sea of Stars is an emotionally charged, action packed, tumultuous ride that will leave you breathless, frustrated, and completely spent at the end. There is a cliff hanger because Amy is a sadistic literary drug dealer who supplies you with the "crack" and then takes it away and dangles it in front of you right after you are hooked. And I love her for it. What does that say about me?? ;)

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. and oddly for fanfic the end was better than the beginning By Timothy Underwood My reaction was mixed, and oddly for fanfic the end was better than the beginning. The epilogue letter with its delightful use of the pragmatism and, well, scandalous nature of Lady Augusta's manner and mind was a lot of fun. The sequence where Elizabeth and Darcy declare they are in love with each other was sweet. Anne's character was also excellent. For that matter the Darcy housekeeper in London and the Earl of Matlock were also good minor characters whose sketches fit in the story in a non-cliche way. The character bits really were probably the best aspect of the story. It didn't feel very exciting or have many narrative payoffs in the first two thirds of the story though.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An enjoyable read! By Karen C Groves This was a very different plot for a P&P. What I enjoyed the most was the growing love between Darcy and Elizabeth. Also, that Darcy finally woke up to the fact that he was missing some things in regard to his wife and what he needed to do about that.I did enjoy this book but not quite as much as I did 'Caroline and the Footman' by these same authors. I did like it well enough to buy a copy to add to my library. All in all, books by Ms. McMann and Ms. Hanford are well written, clean, non-violent and contain romance without being graphic. I will continue to enjoy them and look forward to their next offering. Keep up the good work, Ladies.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An unusual take on P&P By Jules Well I did enjoy this different take on our old favorite, that Elizabeth and Darcy managed a HEA made me say "thank god". Seriously the ending was a little quick and if it had been fleshed out slightly I might have given this more stars. I loved that the book was still all about Elizabeth and Darcy and in saying that I was a little unsure especially after reading the sample. All in all a well written and interesting variation.

Jim’s is the voice reading the audio of Well-Trained Mind Press The Story of the World.

From AudioFile There is a sound of the door opening and closing, followed by quiet. Then the crackling of a fire can be heard in the background as an elderly voice says: "I am Sir Bedivere, the last of the knights of the Round Table. Please sit down there by the fire, won't you . . . while I tell you about King Arthur." Then come the stories--as captivating as only Jim Weiss can tell them--of Excalibur, the Lady of the Lake, the adventures of Sir Percival and Sir Lancelot, the creation of the Round Table and more. No mention is made of the tragic love between Lancelot and Guinevere or the final battle and the death of Arthur. This is idealized storytelling, perfect as a charming introduction to Camelot and a celebration of storytelling magic. J.C. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

A+ - Enchanting and enthralling tales of King Arthur By steve@glassman.org Everything by Jim Weiss is outstanding, but this tape stands out as one of his best. Even though we have listened to it many times, the kids and I enjoy it every time. We all have favorite stories and characters. After we first got the tape, the kids went off on a fairly long binge of acting out the King Arthur stories.Jim Weiss has the perfect reading manner. His voice is clear, his pacing is superb, his adaptations are very good. We have had a carload of antsy kids for an hour car ride and they are all silent and attentive for the entire tape. We have been known to sit in the car for 5 minutes after we have arrived to hear the end of a story (even ones we've heard before).I recommend this tape and any tape by Jim Weiss without any qualifications. They are superb for kids and very good for adults. You will not be disappointed.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. None Better By Michael T. Terry This CD is just terrific, as the sole other review says here. Both my children, a son 8 and a daughter 6, love this CD, and I have to admit that I really enjoy it too.The story is terrific, the productions first rate, and the actual telling of the tale could not be better. If your children like listening to stories, get this CD.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Very entertaining audio book By Jennifer Cook This audio cassette version of Arthur and His Knights was really interesting. This book was about King Arthur and his adventures as a boy up until his death. Mr. Weiss also told about several of Arthur's knights of the round table, including the great Lancelot. I enjoyed listening to this book because of the narrator's expressive tones of voice which added to the climactic points in the story. All in all, it was a great listening experience.

Don’t go out after dark. Stay away from the old graveyards. Burn your dead. Seventeen year old Iris Doyen knew all the rules of her world--a world where Queen Victoria was presented with a caged vampire on her Golden Jubilee and magician-priests haunt the corridors of the Vatican. But when Iris discovers that her mother has been lying about her father’s death, she also learns that the world she thought she knew is only half of the story--and that all the rules are about to change. Now Iris must undertake a journey across the untamed Dakota Territories, into the depths of Seraph Prison, and through the Fade--the boundary that separates the human world from the world of the supernatural. Her only ally is Skyler--attractive, rebellious, unstable...and a vampire. Iris thought she knew the rules--but nothing in her world is exactly what it seems. (Looking Glass is part 1 of the novel Fade. Approximately 110 pages / 34,000 words)

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Richly Written! By C. Zumwalt This series is a lovely blend of alternate history and urban fantasy. The writing is lush and descriptive without turning to purple prose. Iris is easy to relate to and her choices seem very much the choices of a confident seventeen-year-old who is certain she knows what the world is like - and when she is wrong, the action moves at a great pace. This is a lovely read and I'm excited for the next part already!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Wow! By Cassandra D'Errico A great book recommendation! The writing in this novel is deft and the characters are sharp; I genuinely want to see what happens to them. Even the villain draws horrified interest, if not sympathy. I hope to see the rest of the story published soon!

A CASCADE OF DEATH SWEEPS through a small town, and a quaint funeral home is at the center of the problem—but it’s not about the dead people there—it’s that some of them aren’t exactly dead. Fifteen-year-old Peter Livingston lives in the funeral home, but he doesn’t know about its gruesome connection to a maxium-security prison—some of the prison’s not-dead inmates are not-alive either. Shadow’s Prisoners is filled with horror and cliffhanger chapters and it’s a real page turner. In between the disgusting (rats) and the ugly (corpses) and the evil (plotters and schemers), there are also glimpses of warmth and humor that encourage the reader to stay hot on the trail with Peter, armed only with a flashlight, searches through everything and anything to solve the mystery. Who or what is killing so many animals and people in his town? There’s the doctor who rides a motorcycle through town to take care of his patients. There’s the teacher who is a recycling fiend. There’s Peter’s father who is struggling to keep the old mortuary from becoming as dead as its clients. There’s Peter’s uncle who understands, more than anybody else, why it is necessary to brave the worst to discover the unnatural truth. And there’s the FBI agent who is forced to accept things way beyond his skill-set. And these are all the good folks. Ultimately, this situation is for the birds—well actually a very special bird—who lives with Peter’s family and causes no end of havoc.
