Tyler Dawn became passionate about studying the Hebrew context of Christianity in June of 2011, resulting in the writing of her Christian-crossover book, The Bridge: Crossing Over into the Fullness of Covenant Life, in 2014. By Don S 1st century Hebrew contexts require 1st century Hebrew interpretations, especially of Paul's writings, the one the church has so tragically misunderstood. In short, very much worth your time and the few bucks it takes to get it. However, I suggest reading the prequel first, The Bridge.

King, Kingdom, Citizen is written so that the average person like myself can understand it. Gaining the revelation that our God is a real King, not one in theory only, is vital to our relationship with Him. As a citizen of His Kingdom, it is our privilege to show Him honor by revering Him and walking in obedience to His Kingdom laws. One of my favorite parts of the book was the Acts 15 courtroom scene, outstanding! I now have a grasp on the people involved and the issues being addressed at the Jerusalem Council, and therefore have the confidence to explain this portion of Scripture to other believers. Tyler spends the last portion of her book explaining how the issue of citizenship in regards to the former Gentiles coming into covenant through faith in Messiah is the key issue being addressed in Paul's letter to the Galatians. This book is a must read for every Christian and Messianic believer!

By Chris Pope Until recently I had never heard about the Ancient Near East or Honor and Shame, but I knew that it was important to read and understand the Bible from the perspective of those who it was written to. If these topics interest you (and they should if you really want to understand what the bible is saying in a proper cultural context) then I suggest starting with King, Kingdom, Citizen by Tyler Dawn Rosenquist. This book touches on some very important topics that we as a Westernized Culture have no idea about. It's eye opening and I could not put this book down. The best part is that it is written in such a way that even a newbie can understand it. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone who wants a deeper understanding of the cultural context surrounding the scriptures!

Jack Turnbull, a hard-working family man, is threatened with blackmail after the discovery of a brief affair and he considers his options carefully. He can pay up, confess to his wife, or find another way out of his dilemma. In the event, he decides to remove the only obstacle in his path to continued tranquillity, Dennis Black. Jack enjoys fishing and Dennis loves to run on the fells, so Jack sits down to devise a plan to destroy his nemesis somewhere out on the Pennine moorland so dear to them both. As his grandson will later discover, the solution takes the form of a most singular murder. 3 - The Thirteenth Arch: Young Joshua Holland – erstwhile bookseller, budding academic and holdup man – is fresh out of prison and keen to come up with a new field of illicit endeavour. When he hits upon the idea of planning a kidnap he shuns traditional methods in favour of a more mobile approach which will send him scouring the Yorkshire Dales in search of a suitable victim. 4 - PAYDAY: When local tough guy Matt Grimton walked into a Payday Loan shop it wasn’t the end of the month he was worrying about. Busy working a scam to get himself away to sunnier climes, when the chance arose to augment his earnings with a foolproof murder in Spain he was quick to seize the opportunity to test his mettle and earn a quick fifty grand into the bargain.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. "That's when I first had the idea of murdering him...of making him disappear was the one that I couldn't get out of my mind." By Don Kidwell I can't help but keep returning to the well as I really enjoy this authors' writing style! This time around I gave "A Singular Murder" a read (no direct link from table of contents provided, but by searching the book by typing in the word 'singular' and punching location 632 it takes you there with minimal effort). Story about Grandpa relating a murder he was involved in rather than taking the story to his grave was a surefire winner. My favorite passage from the book would have to be, "He sat down opposite me with his coffee and the silence was what you might call pregnant, something I'd made sure Linda wouldn't be, not by me at least." Sure hope this author has more stories coming as I do enjoy them!

Sometimes It Pays, Sometimes It Doesnt By MissScarlett Having already enjoyed the third story, I didnt hesitate to get this collection of four stories. They were allvery readable. well-written and interesting. I cant say that there were any exciting twists at the ends ofany of them, but they were satisfying.

About the Author Henry van Dyke (1852–1933) was an American clergyman, educator, and author. He graduated from Princeton in 1873, and from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1874. He was pastor of the Brick Presbyterian Church, New York City (1883–99), professor of English literature at Princeton (1899–1923), and U.S. minister to the Netherlands (1913–16). Among his popular inspirational writings is the Christmas story The Other Wise Man (1896). As President Wilson's ambassador to the Netherlands from 1913, Van Dyke was a first-hand witness to the outbreak of World War I and its progress, and was a key player in the President's diplomatic efforts to keep the U.S. out of the conflict.

I immediately felt inspired by the story and wished I had read it years ago. To see that someone had illustrated the story was so exciting. I bought the book as soon as I saw it. The illustrations add to the story and make it so adult and child alike can appreciate the message given. This will be a book I will read yearly at Christmas time.

After reading it, and understanding one of the reasons that this book was talked about, I have to say that I really enjoyed the message. It is one of forgetting oneself and focusing on the needs of others, which is something that is often forgotten in this world. It is a simple book, short, and a lot of life's meanings can be found from this.

Since that time, I have incorporated it into my thinking on a daily basis. The significant point of the story is "What Counts, That which is truly given; Only that good that is done for the love of doing it; Only those plans in which the wellfare of others is the master thought; Only those labors in which the sacrifice was greater than the reward. And only those gifts in which the giver forgets himself" This insight has enabled me to find comfort over my daily bread.

I think this was a great story that the author did a great job. This story is about Tara and having to go back to the afterlife to save the Real Real word. This book as well as the first is so creative, and interesting to read. This book is great for the middle school child. This story is well written and so creative. Nothing was left out. I love how strong and brave Tara is and how she doesnt let anything stop her. Even though in the real world she is treated poorly but in this afterlife story she is treated well and is on top of her game. I am so glad I was able to read this story and the first one. I feel this adventure is perfect to read.I was provided a free copy from Lola's blog and the Author and want to thank them both for letting me review this book. The review of this book is my opinion.

She has been working long hours doing her boss' editing work for him, including the editing of an upcoming hot release by a scion of high society, Frederick Little III; however, in this pre-feminist prohibition era, the owner of the publishing house does not want the truth to come out and is not willing to promote Kathy into her boss' position. For the office gossip and some of the police detectives investigating the murder, suspicion begins to build around Kathy, but when Freddie Little discovers who his true editor is, he is attracted to her strong spirit and decides to help her find out who the true murderer is. However, as their private little investigations takes them to the speakeasy underworld of the city, both become targets for a crafty criminal protagonist. This book is a nicely developed historical cozy mystery romance. The historic flavor of the Gershwin era is well represented, but basically, the heart of the tale comes from the snappy interplay of two very independent people as they push past their differences and society's dictates to form a partnership that will last beyond the current mystery and danger they are facing.

Reminiscent of Agatha Christie By Literary R&R Charlene's Review:Kathy Briscow, secretary at Healcroft House Publishing, becomes the number one suspect in a murder when her boss, who she was secretly editing for is murdered. Her supposed motive? Promotion to senior editor and to finally take the credit she deserves. Author, Freddie Little, upon learning of Kathy’s work, demands she stay on his book, and fearing he knows the truth, teams up with Kathy, and together, they set search for the killer.This is a delightful book, set in a fascinating era. As Ms. Bannon takes us through the mystery surrounding the editors death, we are privy to the edgy, glamorous underworld of the 1920's. Set in speakeasies and alleyways, and ever mindful of a woman's place, its like stepping back in time. Touching on socioeconomic differences, sexism, and Prohibition, there is a lot of meat to this story. Ms. Bannon balances all of this with a ballsy protagonist and a sweet, tough guy, fighting the truth, and maybe finding a little romance.Fascinating Rhythm is reminiscent of Agatha Christie or Dorothy Sayers’ novels of the time period. The author did a wonderful job with her research and brought the era and the characters to life.After her boss is murdered Kathy finds herself the prime suspect, she teams up with socialite Freddie Little to discover the real killer. Kathy is an Irish-American who works as a secretary at a publishing house but has been editing Freddie's book. She is struggling to be taken seriously in a man's profession. Kathy is ahead of her time in many ways and modern women will cheer for her. She is a spunky, strong-willed, and determined to remain single.Freddie is a tender-hearted socialite with a somewhat dark past. His book is based on real experiences and sheds light on the corruption of the elite. He's never met a smart woman like Kathy before and the two hit it off well.I didn't find the mystery fast-paced, but it did have a steady pace. I liked the sweet romance aspect between Kathy and Freddie. I was sad when I finished the book because I'd been so sucked into the story. Definitely a sign of a great read.I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

David Gerrard is a reporter for the tabloids with principals. He will only publish the ones he truly believes. For 10 years, Mark Long has been giving David stories from history and adding unique and substantial variations to each one. For the first time, Mark has requested a face to face meeting between them. Together they visit Mark's old friend, Tony Vargas, an expert on the Roman Empire period. Mark presents Tony with an ancient sword asking Tony to tell him exactly what it is. Tony states that it is a first century Roman sword and that it once belonged to a soldier named Casius; the name is engraved on the handle. When he and David are alone, Mark tells him that Tony was right; the sword had belonged to a Roman soldier named Casius. A Jew named Peter took the sword from Casius, and a Roman centurion took it from Peter. Mark tells him the centurion's name was Marcus Cartaphilus Longus. He had been stationed in Caesarea when he'd discovered his daughter was close to death. After learning Yeshua had reportedly saved others from death, Cartaphilus went in search him. But, his daughter died before he could reach Yeshua. Desolate over the death of his daughter and the subsequent death of his wife, Cartaphilus vowed to destroy Yeshua. Pontius Pilate was the Prefect of Judea, ordered extra troops to Jerusalem for the Jewish Passover, led by Cartaphilus. Upon arrival, Cartaphilus was ordered to arrest Yeshua. Led to Yeshua and his followers by a man named Judas Iscariot, a man named Peter grabbed Casius' sword and cut the ear off one of the men while trying to protect Yeshua. Miraculously, Yeshua picked up the severed ear and reattach it to the man's head. Cartaphilus placed Yeshua under arrest and led him to Jerusalem and the house of the High Priest. Over the next few days, Mark's story continues, reliving the final hours of Jesus Christ's life, and the following years. David listens carefully and questions often, impressed by Mark's in-depth account of this 2000 year old story. David becomes determined to disprove his story. He compares Mark's details to the Bible, and contacts a professional researcher, a genealogist, and a professor friend, asking them all questions to help him refute this story, but despite their best efforts they cannot. Over a few exhausting days David cannot find any flaws. The problem is, the only way Mark could know any of these details was if he had been an actual eyewitness, which is obviously impossible. Caught up in the emotion of the story, Mark had accidentally messed up by using the pronoun “we” instead of “they”. David, always vigilant, caught his slip on tape. Cornered by the recorded remark, Mark admits that he is Cartaphilus. David is angry at the waste of his time and thinks about leaving. But Mark says he doesn't need David to necessarily believe him, he needs him to believe the story; if David believes it, so will his readers and he needs to tell the world what really happened. David questions him about other events from the past 2000—including his participation in WWII as a Nazi—but Mark stops him, saying the stories must be told as they happened, not by skipping through the centuries. Mark hands him a daguerreotype of two men from the American Civil War, and David has it checked by experts. They all agree that the daguerreotype is authentic. One of the men in the picture is one of General Robert Lee's sons, and David has a very hard time telling himself the other is not Mark. David and the researchers have failed to disprove Mark's story. David allows himself to believe in the possibility that Mark is actually Cartaphilus. And if that is possible, how many other famous lies or half-truths throughout history could Mark have to share with him? Mark is called away on urgent business. Two months later, David receives a short email from Mark, stating when and where they should meet to continue. This time David is prepared.

Some of that might have been because I just happened to be reading it during Holy Week but I tend to think that it had more to do with how engaging the characters are. When Mark described The Passion, I felt his sadness. This book certainly hooked me in and I'm looking forward to seeing all the different places Mark will take us. Lead on Sir! I shall follow.

Great fast read By mzangee Although I did not learn anything that has not already been on TV and online I came away with a greater appreciation of what the life was about. I only wish that we could hear about his life now such as U.S. His family sti in contact with him. Does he have communication with the child that was young that he wanted to be close to and also is there any way that he will ever be off if 23 hour lockdown. Lord knows that that could literally drive a person crazy and no person should be punished in that way.will there be any more books about pistol Pete or is he faded into oblivion since he is locked away. I would have like to hear from anyone that does have contact with him.

77 of 79 people found the following review helpful. Queasy on Creasy? By Nancy R. Fenn No less an authority than John Keegan has given this book his blessing, so don't be mislead by negative reviews. This book is a classic in the field of military history. No history is unbiased. History is an art not a science. And it is a great art. It can move and inspire as well as instruct us about human nature. Historical writers who can weave myth and symbolism in to their writing carry forward important ideas and concepts for the collective. This is precisely what Creasy has done in his book, organizing his material around the idea that war is productive of something. He influenced every writer of military history who followed. That in itself is enough to promote the book. "15 Decisive Battles" is an excellent introduction to general military history, a perspective often missing in college history courses. I read it many years ago and have since read many different treatments of these basic 15 battles. Ultimately one picks one's preferred viewpoint. Creasy is a generalist but for that very reason, this a good book to start with. Incidentally, I challenge the reviewer who questions the description of the Battle of Teutoburger Wald. I have read the Latin version in Latin and the German version in German and they are absolutely consistent with this British version. I was quite amazed, so try it and see for yourself. I love this book and I really want to recommend it to you. I give it 5 stars and no, I am not queasy on Creasy.

It was a bestseller in Victorian England in 1851, rivaling Darwin's Origin of The Species. It was reprinted 38 times before the turn of the 20th century that obviously appealed to British sensibilities. The background and context of the battle, the personalities involved, the grisly action, the aftermath and historical importance are superbly written. If writing about combat while respecting history can be said to be literature, this book is it.This book started a trend in making war books about battles popular. The selection of battles has stood the test of time. Every library of military history should have this classic. Written long ago, it necessarily omits more recent military candidates, but it vividly captures 15 moments when history stood at a cusp (perhaps Marathon and Waterloo in particular).The free version contains no maps, which are really necessary, so you might consider paying a little extra to get them.I first read this book decades ago, and it's still a classic of style and erudition.

Oracle by Susan BoultonI must admit that I was drawn to this novel by reading the first chapter and getting acquainted with the Oracle; a character; who reminded me of another character in something I recently read. In Diamond Eyes by A.A. Bell there is a blind girl not quite blind who sees the past (not the future) and rambles on about things and is generally ignored. But where Oracle is allowed to roam and live off the charity of others Mira was institutionalized and often kept sedated. Both are integral to the plot of the story and both seem to embody the most innocent of characters. (Though Mira does have the spirit of an imp in her.) And somewhere around there the similarity ends and the Oracle takes on her own life as I dig into the story.This novel is billed as Gaslight Fantasy and mentions Steam power also on the cover though it is only the vaguest of reference drawn to Steampunk and this book surely does not lean much into the Steampunk. Gaslight or Gaslamp as some would have it, seems to be where this story is. I'm not sure whether to call it Victorian or Edwardian; but that is mostly my own deficiency. Its historical fiction of a slightly altered world that has a lot that borders onto the Paranormal. It is a landscape of intrigue and suspense.We have trains; possibly steam trains though there is no real depth taken in their description. The train is important, because the first half of the book is a bit of trying to understand the Oracle's fractured predictions: possibly to save the day. There are two characters that seem to be the main characters in the novel although it took me a bit to finally decide that. Through careful elimination as many characters became duplicitous and multifaceted and deceitful. Finally it devolved down to Pugh Avinguard and the Oracle (who is really his ex-wife; Claire). Pugh is a quite well developed character while the Oracle's development is often stunted by her being two personalities struggling to control one form.One hindrance for me throughout the novel was that the shifting point of view would give me several different explanations of events in peoples lives-somewhat based on rumor so that it was often difficult to tell which story was the truth. As an example the rumors ran everywhere from Claire being dead to her having eloped with Pugh then running away and having the marriage annulled. And finally; to her father arraigned the marriage for political reasons and Pugh having cast her out and divorcing her and thwarting his father inlaws dreams. And I might not have all of that correct; but there were other characters as equally misrepresented this way.This world in which the Oracle exists is one where slavery is practiced under another name and passed off as the best way to take care of the poor. There is change in the air and the Oracle is in tune with this though the political climate is still fraught with those who are comfortable with things staying the way they are. But rebellion is afoot and foreign interest would love to see the country fracture under the stress of social upheaval.The Oracle has a future that seems to be heading into a dark area of things, but the reader is not to fear as there is some hope of redemption; though it may cost the few that are near to her.There is an end to this story that can satisfy the reader, though there seems to be a large number of threads that are left hanging; or perhaps left to the imagination. It is difficult to tell from this if the author will seek to visit this land again.Overall the novel has solid writing with a fair to sprawling plot that only resolves, at the end, if we look strictly toward this being the story of Clair and Pugh.I would have loved to see Claire come out stronger in the story especially when there were other strong female characters such as Elizabeth who delivered my favorite tongue in cheek statement. A world of complexity, depth, and tactile wonder wrapped around a story that charges ahead like the steam engine on its cover By Cynthia Radthorne There is a compelling allure to Susan Boulton’s steampunk-oriented novel Oracle. It stems from any of a number of sound reasons: the intricate political intrigue; the nuanced characters who say, but don’t always say, what they really mean; and throughout the course of the novel, the compelling story of Oracle and who she was, who she is, and what she means to different people and factions. Overlaying all of this is one of those oft-neglected parts of the novel craft: texture. You feel yourself in Boulton’s world: you touch the wood and iron, you sense the steam wafting around, you smell the varnish and the crystal decanter and even the suppleness of a chair’s fabric. Such attention to detail brings Boulton’s world to life such that the story feels rich, the world fully realized, and the characters an integral part of a whole. This is very solid, very entertaining read and brings a talented voice into the genre.

I hadn’t read any gaslight before, so this was definitely something new for me. I was immediately smitten by Susan’s prose and her characters, especially the title character Claire/Oracle, a women caught in a current she can’t always control. As Oracle, the character blurts out seemingly random snippets of prophecy at deliciously inappropriate moments, and as Claire she struggles to reclaim her past and come to grips with her two sides.The novel tells a tale of political intrigue and religious fervor, of class clashes and an establishment stubbornly stuck in the past and refusing to budge. Trapped in the middle of all this turbulence are Claire and her former husband, Captain Pugh Avinguard, and Claire/Oracle’s prophecies may be instrumental in unraveling the events taking the country of Timeholm by storm.'Oracle' centers around prophecy, but not the well-ordered prophecy we often see in fantasy. Instead, the messages are disjointed, confusing, often appearing absolutely useless and bizarre. I found myself thinking, over and over, that this is what prophecy should look like. Something strange and alien that makes no immediate sense, not even to the one who spouts it.The plot had lots of twists and turns and a really great setting. I’ll certainly be keeping an eye open for future novels by the author.

But it's what I call a good, old-fashioned campfire tale By Stephen Kozeniewski I could eat Kimberly Giarratano's prose with a fork and a steak knife. There are no workmanlike sentences here or flowery turns of phrase. Every word is tight, muscular, and load-bearing. Her novel, GRUNGE GODS AND GRAVEYARDS, was the same way.This short is not a sequel to GGG, but they are of a piece, and even share the same universe (with a few winks to the latter.) I wasn't sure what I was getting into here...it's described alternately as romance, supernatural, paranormal, and mystery. But it's what I call a good, old-fashioned campfire tale. In fact, after the first few pages the rising dread I felt in my gorge reminded me of nothing quite so much as an Edgar Allen Poe piece."One Night is all you Need" is short enough that almost any plot description would count as a spoiler. In both a good and a bad sense it's over before you know it. I hadn't expected to even get through it this weekend, but I sat down, opened it up, was quickly absorbed, and in half an hour was finished...and still a little spooked out.I've said for quite some time now that KGG is going to be a major new talent, partly because I believe it, but mostly because I want her to invite me to all her movie premieres and SNL hostings and so forth. The rest of you still have time to jump on the bandwagon. For only $0.99 you can learn the rules of the road with "One Night", and when you're ready you can jump in for a longer road trip with GRUNGE GODS. I highly recommend both.

By Devin @ Devin's Book Hub I'm not one to read short stories, in fact the only other short stories I've read are the readings we have to do in English class from time to time. I've got nothing against them, it's just I'm more of one to tune into full blown novels with all the meat.Back in June I raved about Kimberly's book Grunge Gods and Graveyards because I absolutely loved it. So as any reader would do if they love a book, I looked up the rest of her work and discovered this short story and a few other works by her, some of which I added to my TBR pile.This short story features Margot, a teenager who is in Florida with her parents, as they were all helping her older sister move into her dorm at the University of Miami. Margot's parents decide to go on a tour of Key West, dragging Margot alone. Here she meets Sam, a local who she runs off with in the middle of a tour in hope of some adventure.The story was quick, the story was fun, and even though it was short it had some plot twists to it. I enjoyed it very much, although I wish there was just a little more action to it, although since it's a short story I know it's difficult to do. I felt as if just as soon as the book started it stopped, although isn't that kind of the point of short stories? I'd definitely read a full-length novel featuring Margot and Sam.The eBook is a free download, so go check it out if it interests you!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful Short Story By CK This is the first time I've read something by Kimberly G. Giarratano, and it certainly won't be the last. I'll admit, I don't usually go for short stories. I like to 'get into' the books that I read, and so I usually opt for full-length novels. However, I've been trying to read new authors, and read outside my comfort zone. I was intrigued with Giarratano through some reviews I've seen posted, so when this short story became available I jumped on it. I learned two things: (1) I still prefer full-length novels and (2) short stories are a great way to become acquainted with an author.While short (because, you know, it's a short story) One Night is all You Need gave me enough of a taste that I'm confident I will enjoy reading just about anything Giarratano writes. The story pulled me in, enhanced by Giarratano's beautiful writing style. While I became attached to Margot and her story, I didn't feel as if the story was incomplete. This for me is amazing given I normally feel short stories/novellas leave me wanting more. Don't get me wrong, I still want to know what the future holds for Margot, but I was able to appreciate this story as one glimpse into her life and be satisfied. I've already downloaded Grunge Gods and Graveyards, and can't wait to dig in!

The only negative: the Univ. of Alabama Press edition contains some typos and the print quality could be a bit better. However, the quality of Stribling's writing more than makes up for these deficiencies.

I've already reviewed the first book, The Forge, and most everything I have to say about this book was summed up in that review. The rating has been raised, as a result of the fact that I'm currently about 1,500 pages into the series and am nowhere near ready for it to be over. That's saying something.One thing that was different in this book was that there was a new fat character, and apparently her entirely personality was that of 'fat'. Seriously, he actually wrote :"I don't know," she called back flabbily, "I might want something to eat."How exactly does a person speak 'flabbily'?

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A good immersive read, though not without its faults. By Elizabeth F. I read the Forge two years ago, and really liked it. I had meant to read the Store sooner after that, but for various reasons did not do so until now. The Store takes place about 20 years after the Forge, and I did not quite like it as much. It focuses primarily on one of the characters from the Forge, though it still includes others.Its still a good read, particularly in expressing the dichotomy of black and white viewpoints of situations and behaviors, particularly the failure of white characters to understand the rational behavior of black characters. I like the setting, 1884 Alabama, which I knew absolutely nothing about before reading the book. The change of seasons, political events, range of characters, provide a very immersive read.I have to remove a star because I don't think its particularly good literature. I think the plot is a little contrived, and some of the characters are not well drawn. Someone else mentioned, Ponny, whose character is only in being "fat". She was more well-drawn in the Forge. In particular, the author's belief in the occult, which was a small element in the Forge, is much more prominent in the Store. I do mean the author's belief, as well as some of the characters in the book, the belief that the dead can find ways to talk to people from beyond the grave, can reveal things they might not even have known when alive. This was a popular thing in the 1910s, 20s, 30s when this book was written. I noticed it also in Booth Tarkington's the Magnificent Ambersons, where he kind of screws up the ending with a bizarre occult twist. This same element in The Store devalues the plot which is otherwise pure historical fiction. Two characters in particular are driven by this true occult obsession/connection throughout the book, not just in one little spot as with the Forge.Someone might ask, why did this book get the Pulitzer and not the Forge. The Pulitzers prizes for fiction often miss the mark. Most of the best fiction from this era are not Pulitzer prizes, and most of the Pulitzers are forgotten for good reason. For example, the same year the Store was published, A Light in August (Faulkner) and The Thin Man (Hammett) were published. In addition, Pulitzers were often given to established authors AFTER they had written their best work. For example, they gave a Pulitzer for Arrowsmith after Sinclair Lewis had already won a Nobel Prize for his other books Main Street and Babbitt. (He refused to accept the prize.) They gave one to Hemingway for a book published 30 years after his best fiction was published, and for a terrible book by Willa Cather, 5 years after My Antonia was published. If you are looking for good literature, don't read the Pulitzers. There are many other good lists to go by.However, I would still recommend reading The Forge, and the Store, for the experience of the setting, the events, the viewpoints. I do intend to finish the trilogy and read the Unfinished Cathedral, and I hope that this silly mystical element does not take on an even bigger role.If you have not read the Forge, I think you can still read the Store as a stand alone novel. I had forgotten many of the details of the Forge, and I still found the Store to be readable. However, I think it would be better to read the Forge first, since I think it may be a better book, and because many of the characters are influenced by events of the past which are described in the Forge. The author himself was born in Tennessee. His father's family fought for the North, his mother's Alabama family fought for the South. The Catlins and Vaidens represent those families. So I think The Forge is a great place to start the saga.

But I finally got it back in my hands, and glad I did!The world and character building are far above average, which is actually rare for authors coming out. I was really surprised at the change of landscape, especially the temperature.A fantasy dystopia of a world being ravaged by winged beasts, and a small group of humans that have realized they are already dead, so what do they have to lose in fighting back? The worst possible scenario an enemy, or in this case, enemies, can face. An opponent whose every forward moving step, is a victory.The drastic changes in weather, vegetation, texture, animals and beings, elevations, and the like make this an easier read, when you start to understand the world they are living in.The relationship between the protagonist and her dog is actually realistic. I hate the dog/master scenario that would never emulate you and your pet in real life, but this one actually makes you glad to see her dog is just like yours.The other "warriors", (a title inwardly deserved, not via sword and brawn) on the journey are who I would want, if I was on the same quest. It is so cliche to have the same elite fighter force of raging steroid and max power heroes, that folks never realize, maybe the courage and genius of the guy that might be nothing more than an average guy bagging your groceries, was what was really needed.The protagonist has a personal agenda of answers she is searching for, as is expected with all stories. The difference here, is that the so-called "Heroine" is just an ordinary girl with a slingshot, someone easily underestimated, until that indifference towards her, turns out to be her greatest strength.Everyone is a liability in their own way on this adventure, but everyone has a special strength that makes up for the liability of another, making this group of everyday nobodies, relatable as being you and your neighbors down the street.This book is excellent in quality. Dark readable type, wonderful size. Quality pages, I never even cared about editing, because there was no real errors anywhere, and if they were, I had no interest in them, because of the readability of the story. The cover is what sold me before reading, and when the book arrived, It looked even better in person. I paid $11.65 at Amazon, and after receiving it, I would have paid as much $12.95 for it. Full of twists and unexpected developments, it keeps you surprised at every turn. Hepburn has a delightfully feminine voice, and she has some gems: "It's the beginning of the future. It could well be the end of everything" and "He's in my personal space and I sure didn't invite him." If you like fantasy, there's plenty to delight your interest. This is not a dark dystopian novel; it's full of light, and that's a good thing. It's a good start to her series, one that promises more to come.
