On a spring day early in the 20th Century, the unthinkable occurs.

A horse-drawn wagon carrying a bomb loaded with dynamite and shrapnel explodes in front of the House of Morgan in New York. Dozens are killed, and hundreds are wounded. The Wall Street Explosion, as it came to be known, ensures that the corner of Broad and Wall will be associated with the dawn of organized terror in America. Although New York and the financial center of the world recover, U.S. foreign policy will never be the same.

Months earlier, New Mexico's statehood was threatened by Article X of the Treaty of Mesilla-the Revert Document. The document, that allows Mexico to reassert its claim over the territory, created an international conspiracy. Spanish-American war hero Adobe Centori, who fought to secure New Mexico statehood, returns in this sequel to Statehood of Affairs. Centori seeks redemption for the woman he could not save in the Revert Document conspiracy, only to be drawn into a greater conspiracy-a secret war against America. After the Wall Street bombing, a series of attacks in New York raises the stakes for all involved, none of whom can deny the sense of a coming catastrophic terror attack.

From New Mexico to New York, a search for anarchists and state-sponsored spies ensues. Centori joins a team of federal agents and city police officers in a campaign to stop the attacks, one that is fraught with dangerous saboteurs. They must uncover an international plot tied to Germany's ambitions in the coming Great War.

Cillis manages to take the reader from New Mexico to New York and successfully intertwine the historical realities of both locales. The result is a whirlwind of suspense and intrigue, brought to life by the men and women who artfully keep the reader engaged. Adobe Centori is both tender and heroic and he lets us witness his loves and betrayals as he travels the expanse of our nation in the early 20th century. I now want to read Statehood of Affairs, Cillis's prequel to Water Damage. I'm sure I won't be disappointed!

Water Damage is as much a story about intrigue, romance and adventure as it is a lesson about New York City’s rich history. Cillis captures the sites, sounds and emotions of city life in the early 20th century. I especially liked the vivid descriptions of the streets and subways during the spellbinding chase scene to catch the key saboteur, the intricacies of the buildings on Wall Street and clothes worn by the femme fatale, as well as the vast landscapes of the southwest. And who could resist the cowboy charm of the novel's main character, Adobe Centori! It's an adventure story with many twists and turns. Also loved the historic photos. Great fun!

Kaufman I have just finished reading Dan Cillis' book, Water Damage. That it enlightened me to facts about New Mexico statehood and the beginnings of terrorism in America is a testament to Cillis' skill as an author and teacher. (He is a professor of management and leadership at a major college.) While I don't easily give a five-star rating to many things, I make an exception herein. The word illustrations are exemplary in that the book grabs an intelligent reader and doesn't let go. The author's technique of writing in present tense also keeps the momentum going without letup and the scenarios grant the reader a true sense of visualization as the pages turn without stopping. The plot is that strong and unrelenting. The history of New Mexico statehood is described in absolute factual form. The historical characters portrayed include legitimate persona from our own American history and Cillis brings them to life with great aplomb. His depictions of life on a cattle ranch, small town incidentalia, interpersonal relationships, historical sites in New York, etc., along with the foibles of a man of determination and integrity are handled well throughout The denouement is surprising and somewhat not expected as the tension leading up to it doesn't let the reader go.I won't go into specific details of the story line, but would without hesitation recommend this work to anyone who is or is not a cowboy, as well as a true New Yorker. This book will stay on my bookshelf of notable books in my library.Good job, DanStephen F. KaufmanAuthor of Sun Tzu's Art of War, Musashi's Book of Five Rings, etc.
