July 1917: Joseph Reavley, a chaplain, and his sister Judith, an ambulance driver, are bone-weary as they approach the fourth year of the conflict; the peace of the English countryside seems a world away. On the Western Front, the Battle of Passchendaele has begun, and among the many fatalities from Joseph’s regiment is the trusted commanding officer, who is replaced by a young major whose pompous incompetence virtually guarantees that many good soldiers will die needlessly. But soon he, too, is dead―killed by his own men. Although Joseph would like to turn a blind eye, he knows that he must not. Judith, however, anguished at the prospect of courts-martial and executions for the twelve men arrested for the crime, has no such inhibitions and, risking her own life, helps all but one of the prisoners to escape.

Back in England, Joseph and Judith’s brother, Matthew, continues his desperate pursuit to unmask the sinister figure known as the Peacemaker―an obsessed genius who has committed murder and treason in an attempt to stop Britain from winning the war. As Matthew trails the Peacemaker, Joseph tracks his escaped comrades through Switzerland and into enemy territory. His search will lead to a reckoning pitting courage and honor against the blind machinery of military justice.

At Some Disputed Barricade (World War One Series), by Anne Perry

From Publishers Weekly Fans of the first three books in this WWI series from Perry, best known for her Victorian police procedurals, will eagerly pick up this fourth volume to learn more of the ongoing saga of the three Reavley siblings: Joseph, a chaplain working with soldiers on the front line in France; Matthew, a British intelligence officer; and Judith, an ambulance driver. (Newcomers may struggle to understand the backstory.) Matthew continues his search for the traitorous mastermind—the "Peacemaker"—plotting to align Britain with Germany to end the war, while Joseph is working on a smaller mystery: was British officer Howard Northrop killed by one of his own men? Exposition slows down the pace in places, but the author vividly captures the unspeakable horrors of the Great War. Readers won't have long to wait for the fifth and final entry in the series, We Shall Not Sleep (Reviews, Feb. 5). (Mar.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist The fourth entry in Perry's World War I series finds chaplain Joseph Reavley three years into his service in the trenches of Ypres on the western front. The British army has suffered appalling losses, and the men are exhausted, hungry, and afraid. Now an incompetent officer, the son of a general, unwilling to take advice from more experienced soldiers, is sending his men to certain death by making wrongheaded, uninformed decisions. When the officer's body is discovered, it falls to Joseph to determine whether he was killed by his own men. The investigation is complicated when Joseph's sister, Judith, a fearless ambulance driver, is drawn into the dispute. Meanwhile, their brother, Matthew, who works for British intelligence, is seeing indications of the work of the Peacemaker, who, under the guise of seeking an end to the conflict, is sabotaging Britain's war effort. Perry explores the shifting nature of loyalty, conscience, and honor when set against the backdrop of a blood-soaked battlefield, and her grisly descriptions of that battlefield are heartrending. They are all involved in WWI - Matthew in Military Intelligence, Judith is an ambulance driver at the front, and Joseph is the chaplain for the troops also at the front. Their parents were murdered before the war, because they found a treaty that would make an alliance between England and Germany, creating a major world power from a mastermind called The Peacemaker, a man high up in the government. The first half of the book is a bit slow, but it has to, to explain the enormity of the war and the horror and slaughter. The story revolves around some troops who try to get their inept division leader who is causing more death and injury to his troops to stop. In an attempt to scare him into reality, these men hold a kangaroo court, but something goes awry. It is up to Joseph to find answers and get the men back to a semblance of normalcy.BUT the 2nd half of the book sparkles!! While Mrs. Perry show the horror on the front, the filth and death and mustard gas, but she has yet to say anything about the flying aces of WWI - She vividly shows us dogfights and even has Joseph take part in one - he even crosses paths with the Red Baron! The brilliance of writing takes us there on the front and we feel the pain of war. There is one more book to this series, and although I am a fan of the Monk and Pitt series, I will miss this series -Perry creates a vivid picture of war.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Lest We Forget By Reader Leader Britain fought "The Great War" long before the U.S. entered the fight. Ms. Perry graphically shows the horrors of trench warfare. As an English and history teacher, I wish I had had a book like this available to enable me to awake in my students an interest in this part of the early 20th century. The author puts you right there with the soldiers and captures the attitudes -- the glue -- that held that country together. World War I was the tough-to-endure preparation that gave English men and women the stamina to withstand the continual bombings of World War II. You may feel that aspects of the book are romanticized, but no one who reads this book will fail to learn more about how the first 20 years of the last century shaped the 80 years that followed -- and continues even today. This series has been an education for me. Some may find parts of it slow moving, but I have relished every word.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A riveting, but heartbreaking tale. By Shirley Schwartz This fourth book in Perry's World War I series is just as good as the three previous. In it we continue to follow the lives of the Reavely family. Matthew is still on the trail of the "Peacemaker", and still finds that he cannot trust anyone. Joseph is still in Flanders with his troops. But Joseph finds himself far out of his comfort zone as he actually goes behind enemy lines to bring some English deserters back to face a court-martial. Judith is still driving her ambulance. The characters in this series are so very strong, as are the plots. I know that I have learned a lot about this appalling war by reading this series. The book is set in the summer of 1917, and the troops have been fighting a war that has gone on for three long years. And the death tolls for all people in this war were staggering. This is a totally unforgettable series with a totally unforgettable family in the centre of all this war to end all wars. We see war, death, love, intrigue, loyalty and, not only these things, but a really good story that will keep your interest until the end of the series which is to be the next book. I think that looking back on it from this point in time, it has made me realize how very tragic this war was, and how little it really solved.

Set in the Georgian period, about 20 years before the Regency, These Old Shades is considered to be the novel that launched Heyer's career. It features two of Heyer's most memorable characters: Justin Alastair, the Duke of Avon, and Leonie, whom he rescues from a life of ignomy and comes to love and marry.

The Duke is known for his coldness of manner, his remarkable omniscience, and his debauched lifestyle. Late one evening, he is accosted by a young person dressed in ragged boy's clothing running away from a brutal rustic guardian. The Duke buys "Leon" and makes the child his page. "Leon" is in fact Leonie, and she serves the Duke with deep devotion. When he uncovers the true story of her birth, he wreaks an unforgettable revenge on her sinister father in a chilling scene of public humiliation.

Praise for Georgette Heyer:

"Wonderful characters, elegant, witty writing, perfect period detail, and rapturously romantic. Georgette Heyer achieves what the rest of us only aspire to." ―Katie Fforde

"Absolute monarch of the Regency romance." ―Kirkus Reviews

These Old Shades, by Georgette Heyer

Amazon.com Review A gentleman was strolling down a side street in Paris, on his way back from the house of one Madame de Verchoureux. He walked mincingly, for the red heels of his shoes were very high. A long purple cloak, rose-lined, hung from his shoulders and was allowed to fall carelessly back from his dress, revealing a full-skirted coat of purple satin, heavily laced with gold; a waistcoat of flowered silk; faultless small clothes; and a lavish sprinkling of jewels on his cravat and breast. The gentleman in question is Justin Alastair, the Duke of Avon, known by friends and enemies alike as Satanas--the devil. On this particular evening, the dangerous rake crosses paths with Léon, a red-headed youth of low birth who is fleeing a certain beating at his brutal brother's hands. On a whim, Avon buys the boy and makes him his page. It soon becomes clear, however, that Léon is not what he seems, and that Avon has an ulterior motive for bringing him into his household. Set in pre-Revolutionary France, These Old Shades follows a twisting course as young Léon (or is it Léonie?) is swept up in a dangerous mystery: how to account for the page's amazing resemblance to the sinister Compte de Saint Vire, for example; and why will this man go to any lengths to get the youth in his power?

Georgette Heyer's historical romances tend to fall into two different camps: later novels such as Cotillion, False Colours, and Sylvester feature larger-than-life comic characters and romantic pairings more akin to Beatrice and Benedick than Hero and Claudio. Earlier works such as These Old Shades, however, tend to be darker, tinged with mystery and overshadowed by very real menace. What both types share is Heyer's fine storytelling and encyclopedic knowledge of Regency mores and manners--her books are the next best thing to a time machine. These Old Shades's greatest asset, however, is the charming Léonie: beautiful, brave, and loyal to a fault, with a fondness for swordplay and pistols and a delightfully incomplete grasp of the English language. Heyer herself was so fond of this character that she featured her in two more novels, Devil's Cub and An Infamous Army. --Alix Wilber

From Library Journal Justin Alastair, Duke of Avon, is called "Satanas" by enemy and friend alike. In the aristocratic circles of both London and Paris he has a reputation as a dangerous and debauched rake. He has the occasional odd whim, however, and when a semistarved, ragged child literally falls into his arms on a dark Paris street, Justin purchases the miserable scrap from his abusive guardian and makes the child his page. Cleaned up and properly dressed, Leon proves to be surprisingly comely, with delicate features and flaming red hair. His delicate manners coexist with a personality that combines innocence and arrogance with a fiery temper and a willful stubbornness. Strangest of all, he bears a strong resemblance to the Comte de Saint-Vire, an old enemy of Justin's. Before long Leon is unmasked as the girl Leonie, but the mystery of her heritage deepens. The strength of the characters rather than the plot fuels this novel. Justin cuts a dark and brooding hero figure; his motives are definitely dubious at the beginning of the story and remain questionable. Even the secondary characters are strongly drawn, distinct, and important to plot development. Narrator Cornelius Garrett does an excellent job, offering a rendition of Justin that is suitably languid. Highly recommended.Barbara Rhodes, Northeast Texas Lib. Syst., Garland Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review "My favourite historical novelist, stylish, romantic, sharp, and witty. Her sense of period is superb, her heroines are enterprising, and her heroes dashing. I owe her many happy hours" -- Margaret Drabble "Sparkling" The Independent

Like Tom Jones, it is densely written and it is intricate. The plot is not merely a structure for explaining how and why the characters fall in love. Instead, the love story is a natural element of the overall plot. The story is subtly developed, like a good mystery; clues are dropped throughout and the big climax scene is stunning. When I read that scene as a teenager, I was so amazed, I re-read it and then re-read the entire book to that point to figure out why I hadn't picked up on what was going to happen. Unpredictability is such a relief. The relationship between the hero and the much-younger heroine is developed slowly. He is urbane and dry, she charming and playful. Despite their age difference, it becomes clear that they are well-suited. She balances him, and makes him human rather than the cold and arrogant man he is at first. Another important element is that the dialogue often resembles the dialogue in a Jane Austen book; the formalities and conventions of rank and address are respected. Finally, the supporting characters are well-drawn and entertaining, and the villian is truly disturbing. Since I read this book many years ago, I do not think I have ever read a better romance novel.

75 of 79 people found the following review helpful. words cannot describe how WONDERFUL this story is By A Customer 'These Old Shades' is my absolute favourite by Georgette Heyer. Out of so many wonderful stories that she has written this book is in a class of it's own. No romance reader should ignore this book. It has it all - romance, intrigue and humour. It is more enjoyable because it doesn't have any of the heavily erotic love-making scenes that can be popular today. 'These Old Shades' is so well written that it doesn't need to rely on them. It is, purely and simply, a romance story in its truest form.In several ways Barbara Cartland's 'Love Me For Ever' is very similar to 'These Old Shades' - runaway meets cycnical Duke, is briefly disguised as his page, calls him Monseigner and becomes his ward. 'Love Me For Ever' is one of my favourite Barbara Cartland stories, but 'These Old Shades' has more depth and the characters, Justin, Duke of Avon and Leon/Leonie, and even the supporting characters are much stronger. Please read 'These Old Shades'if you get a chance. You won't be sorry.

70 of 76 people found the following review helpful. A masque of lace and steel By Brett Evill This is one of the landmarks in the Heyer canon: the most extravagant and adventurous of her romances. Set forty years before the Regency novels for which Heyer is most famous, 'These Old Shades' forms a series with 'Devil's Cub' and 'An Infamous Army', which relate the adventures of later generations of the Alastair family. (A Heyer afficionado may also detect a connection with the inferior 'The Black Moth', set yet earlier.)In 'These Old Shades' the Duke of Avon (the most ruthless and sinister of Heyer's heroes) pursues a passion for vengeance and Titian hair, and ends up catching the most flamboyant and daring of her heroines.Read 'A Civil Contract' for a lyrical love-story, 'The Convenient Marriage' for clever dialogue: and 'These Old Shades' for adventure.

On a November day in 1863, in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, President Abraham Lincoln spoke briefly at the dedication of a cemetery for soldiers fallen in the recent battle. He said, "The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here today", but this prophecy proved incorrect as Lincoln's remarks became one of the most famous speeches of all time. But what if, haunted by an unexpected tragedy, the words spoken by Lincoln that day were different, words that irrevocably changed not only the course of the Civil War but also American history itself? THE BLOOD OF THE FALLEN is a tale of Alternate History from master storyteller and bestseller James Reasoner, author of the Civil War Battles series. A compellingly different view of the bloody clash that defined a nation, this story originally appeared in the anthology ALTERNATE GETTYSBURGS.

The Seven Sixes! Seven six-sided coins that could grant their owner that most sought after power – the power to turn any object into gold. For King Midas, the first to possess the Seven Sixes, the golden touch meant saving his kingdom and wealth untold. But, the power of the golden touch came with a curse - a curse that brought heartache and sorrow to the great king. To make sure that no one else suffered as he suffered, King Midas sent seven of his finest soldiers, each carrying one of the coins, in seven different directions with orders to “ride until there is no land and sail until there is no sea” and upon reaching the ends of the Earth, each must cast his individual coin into the abyss. But in this they failed, because the Earth has no end. There is no abyss. And the coins survived to draw another whose greed and lust for power matched that of King Midas. Only a boy of fourteen with a talent for picking pockets stood in his way.

This is a great adventure book particularly for a younger audience By Mightypisces This is a great adventure book particularly for a younger audience. Being an adult, I still enjoyed the story and the characters. The author does a good job of establishing the setting as well and keeping the chase going to the very end. If I had to compare this book to something I would say that it reminded me of the "Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" TV show from the 1990's. Definitely a fun and enjoyable read!

Wonder about his motives, his thoughts, his time away at school. You want to know more about him other than the fact he's Meg's soul mate. You want to know the inner workings of Alex Aguilar. That's what BEFORE SOMEDAY is. It's Alex's Tell All. It's his opportunity to set the record straight and allow you to get to know him. You're going to hate him at times. You're going to want to shout at him to man the hell up. But you're going to love him, I promise you that. You're going to want him for yourself, for your daughter, for your niece, for your friend. Even with all his flaws, you're going to want to hug him and love on him for the rest of your life.

Sooooooooo excited to finally read Alex ' s point of view. It wasn't just a rehash of Meg's books, either. I learned so much I didn't know, and now I have a question I never dreamed I'd ask: will there ever be a book from Amy ' s point of view? I realize it would need to be geared towards older teens/new adults, but her story is more powerful than I ever dreamed. And Alex is more kind hearted than I ever realized.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I was mesmerized by this series By DiDi GPBR Back in 2012 I “discovered” author Julie Prestsater when her book Against the Wall came up on my recommended reads list on Amazon and I figured for 99 cents, what the hell. No doubt it was one of the best 99 cent books I have ever read and I found not only an author whose work I thoroughly enjoy but a person I now consider a friend. That being said, please don’t think I’m giving her 5 stars because of that, I’m giving her 5 stars because this book, well really this epic journey calls for it. After reading the two books she had out in her Against The Wall series and “meeting” some of the students in them from her young adult Double Threat series I sat down and read that series when I don’t think I’d read a young adult book since I was probably 12.I was mesmerized by this series and having friends whose high school aged children were dealing with some of the issues brought forth in these books only made them more special. I wrote a review that encompassed the whole Double Thread series and said: “These books are beautifully written and they are told from Megan’s point of view. Honestly this is one of the reasons this series gets a 4.5 instead of 5 star review from me. As I sat back and reflected on this series (and believe me I’ve done a lot of reflecting) I realized we really didn’t get to see or get to know Alex very well at all. I would have loved to know more about what he was thinking and how he was feeling during the duration of these books and I really want to know what all went on during his time at Berkeley.” That set the ball rolling for Before Someday and I could not be happier with the outcome. Julie tortured me because while writing it she shared NOTHING about it with me, well other than to say things like “just wait until you read….” yep, torture but then again I’m glad because I got to experience the whole book from start to finish without having a clue as to what was going on and I can honestly tell you that I cried buckets, I physically hurt in places, I cheered, and I swooned because Alex Aguilar is a swoon worthy hero especially give his age. This is a story of young love, of heartache, of heart break, of teenage mistakes, of learning, of figuring out life, of growing up, and most of all of never ever losing sight of the big picture; their someday, their forever. (Seriously I’m tearing up as I’m writing this I am such an emotional reader.)Before Someday is written in four parts just like Meggie’s books were written as four books, one for each of her high school years. This is Alex’s “side” of the story and it covers his senior year in high school and his first three years at Berkeley and of course in this author’s style, a fantastic epilogue. The first two parts (The Wait and the Moment) I would consider young adult but the second two parts (The Hold and The Forever) I consider to be more New Adult. However, the whole book is just one big ball of awesome. We really get to see what a special young man Alex is and how mature he is even as a senior in high school. We see that despite wanting Meggie with all his heart he sacrifices his happiness to help someone who really needs it. We see him go from being “big man on campus” to a “tiny fish in the ocean” and we watch him struggle to adapt not only to college life but to being away from his parents whom he loves and adores and from Meggie and the rest of his crew. I’m going to admit I cried a lot during the part that encompasses his freshman year in college and Ms. Prestsater did a fantastic job in this part making the reader feel everything that was going on in Alex’s life. The feelings and emotions that she evoked really got to me and watching this strong, self assured young man struggle just about did me in. I love that there were snippets of events from Meg’s books but she didn’t just “retell” the same stories, Alex’s side was very different and I loved seeing the world from his eyes. Loved his openness about his life with his parents and loved seeing how from the moment he met Meggie he knew she was special. It was amazing to watch Alex come through the struggle and figure out how to make life work for him even when it about killed him to do some of the things he did and to know that not once did he lose focus on what he wanted later in life on the big picture. His “college crew” added so much to these stories and as much as I loved the original crew I give thanks to the new crew for keeping him sane, making him live life and really for understanding his devotion to his Meg.I have to stop, but I just want to encourage you to read this author’s work if you haven’t, and if you’ve read her adult books I urge you to take a chance on the Double Threat series because believe me I was the last person who thought I could love a YA series as much as I did this one. Julie I can’t thank you enough for writing Alex’s side of the story and I’m sorry I cost you many sleepless nights and lots of beer but you did it…you nailed this story; it is and epic love story and I loved it from beginning to end (well with the exception of the Amy time…but since Meg and Alex forgave her I can to, I guess…well not really because I’m not as nice as them but I have gotten over it, sort of). Thank you for listening to me and to all your readers who wanted to see this story told, thank you for a “nice guy” hero, thank you for letting them grow up knowing they were their own people, and thank you for giving them a chance to work things out in their own way over time. Everyone should be as lucky to have a love story like the one told in Before Someday because while it wasn’t easy their hard work paid off and their someday turned into forever.Review copy provided for an honest review.

Have you ever wondered what was going through the minds of those who were at Calvary? Wouldn't you love to read their diaries? With just a little imagination, you can do just that. In this creative series entitled Journals of the Cross, we explore the lives of those who were there. Why did Judas feel that it was necessary to betray Jesus? Why did he join the Apostles in the first place? What led him to repent and return the silver? In this work of Biblical fiction, we attempt to answer those questions.

Her trip back into her Cowboys time was fun to follow. I would have liked it to continue on a bit longer to see Becca and Warwick adjust together in their new life in the 21st century. The time travel experience kept my interest up.The wishing well as the time travel vehicle was creative. I did get a bit confused as to how Becca returned after she had been shot. This was an entertaining read. I would have liked to see it expanded rather than end quite so abruptly . I will be looking for this authors next book in the series.

I loved the use of historical facts, it adds so much realism to the events. The time travel twists certainly draw the reader to look forward to the next book in the series. It was a great book! Read it in one afternoon! Couldn't put it down! Loved it!

I read it in one evening. The adventure and romance were clean and readable and with plenty of suspense. Even the ending left one anticipating the next lucky couple transported in time through the witching well.

It turns out it is almost two books in one. One of what happens prior and one what happens after our hero comes to sunny Canada. Thanks for writing this. A truly moving novel. I smiled, I loughed and I wept when reading it. Thanks.

By Bookish Things 10 Things I Loved About Gods of Chaos Darlena can’t seem to stay out of trouble Scotland!!!!! (I love this setting) We get to see even more mythology, include Norse gods We learn more about Red Magic Hecate shows how awful she can be New friendships Cute boys Adventures that traverse many places Emotions come out Surprises about what is actually going on

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Thrilling adventure full of mythology and magic! By Ashley Ferguson Daughter of Chaos was an excellent start to the Red Magic series, and I have been really looking forward to reading Gods of Chaos. Since the final book in the trilogy is out soon, I realized I should really read it now, and I am so glad I stopped putting it off! Gods of Chaos was an excellent continuation of the series, and has me so pumped for the third and final installment. My favorite part of this series is how all of the different mythologies are combined. We get to see gods and goddesses from pretty much every major pagan religion, and even some minor gods and goddesses. The Red gods are, for the most part, incredibly terrifying and I fear for Darlena's life every time she goes up against one. I also enjoyed meeting the deities associated with the other magical paths - we're introduced to goddesses like Isis and Nepthys in this book and it was really fun to see how they interact with their witches.Since it's been so long since I read Daughter of Chaos, I had forgotten some of the details of what happened. Luckily, we're reminded of things that went on in the first book as the events and details become important, so I never really felt like there was something huge I was missing. Lena is still fighting against Hecate, but there are now more players in the game and some of them seem like they'll be even worse than Hecate. I'm already very concerned about how things are going to play out, and one of the Red gods doesn't even have any real power for most of this book! There is a little bit of a romance sub-plot in this book, but it's not forced and it's doesn't distract form the main plot. Lena also starts to form new bonds and friendships with some of the new witches she meets, and she learns that there's more to the magical world than she ever thought. Covens aren't just things found in horror movies, and the three paths she's learned about her entire life might not be the entire story. I loved learning things as Lena did, and I think it really helps with the world-building.I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who has read Daughter of Chaos, and this series to anyone looking for a great fantasy story that incorporates pretty much every major mythology (Greek, Norse, Egyptian, and Polynesian are among the mythologies that we get to see) into a thrilling adventure that will leave you wanting more. Jen McConnel writes beautifully and this is not one that you will want to miss! 4/5!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I loved this book and can't wait to read more about Darlena By Fizza Younis I loved it! Story continues from book one. Darlena is looking for another Red Witch. She thinks that together they might be able to defeat Hecate for once and for all. But things don't go as well as she had hoped. She did find the other Red but he is not too willing to help her in any way. Now she must think of something else to convince Marcus or maybe even use magic to get his help. There are many twists and turns in this book. The ending was totally unexpected and completely epic. Now I have only one question: When can we read the next book? I can't wait... :D

I think it is one of the better ones I have read since owning my kindle. I was excited to read it because of the time travel element, there's no one genre to capture all that this novel offers; it's truly an original. I found this book well written and intriguing. It kept my interest from the beginning to the end. Very good read with lots of action and humor. Great job Denniger!

Like the soldier convicts of The Dirty Dozen By Frank Scozzari Inspired by a dream, THE TIME CARD is a hugely imaginative, humorous, well-written sci-fi story with a plot that will twist your mind. It is science fiction of the highest order. I read the entire story in one quick sitting and when I turned the last page, I wished it had never ended.Like the soldier convicts of The Dirty Dozen, the protagonist, Fogarty, gets a second chance; not by fighting Nazis, but by being a guinea pig in a time travel experiment. The mission offers more than a 5-year reduction in sentence. It provides an opportunity to undo the crime he never committed. The Time Card itself is a clever little device which enables a person to punch in a date and time and Wham!—off you go.As with all great time travel books, THE TIME CARD posses ethical and philosophical questions. What would you do if you could travel back in time? What injustice would you correct? Or would you just spend the time having fun and getting rich? If you enjoy time travel stories, I think you'll love this one.

Good for developing a fertile imagination. Fantasies are like dreams. In our dreams we have often done the impossible—levitate into the air, fly without wings, travel to places we have never been to, reconnect with dead people we once loved and not loved, and do heroic or scary things. When we come back to reality, our wakeful state, if is the experience was positive, we are happy to have had those moments, if scary, we are relieved to know what happened to us was only a dream. This creative, imaginative and fun novel by Denning Bolton has many elements of dreams. By reading this book, you will be transported to another time and place. You will meet famous people you have only heard or read about. Just like in dreams, you will watch impossible things happen, with a magical device called the Time Card. This book makes you think, because the plot is a unique one. Someone (Fogarty) is imprisoned for life for a crime he supposedly had not committed. He gets an opportunity to take a part in a time-travel experiment in exchange for reducing his sentence by five years. Fogarty has only 72-hours to time-travel and do all the things he wishes to do, including undoing the crime he has been accused of doing. The catch is there is a possibility that he may never return to the present. Many who got involved in the same experiment never came back. Here are questions to ponder on. Would you sacrifice your life for a 5-year reduction in your sentence? Granted that being a prison is one of the worst things that could happen to someone. After a while even such a place can be preferred to death. Breathing the air, seeing the sun, having a healthy mind to think and imagine. . . . With our imagination we can live in a beautiful world, far from our prison compound. We can time and space travel just like Fogarty, all these at no cost or hassle. With all these options available to you, would you still risk your life? Read this great book and find out what Fogarty did and what happened to him in the end.

The Vanishing of Betty Varian by Carolyn Wells It is, of course, possible, perhaps even probable, that somewhere on this green earth there may be finer golf links or a more attractive clubhouse than those at Headland Harbor, but never hope to wring such an admission from any one of the summer colony who spend their mid-year at that particular portion of the Maine coast. Far up above the York cliffs are more great crags and among the steepest and wildest of these localities, a few venturesome spirits saw fit to pitch their tents. Others joined them from time to time until now, the summer population occupied nearly a hundred cottages and bungalows and there was, moreover, a fair sized and fairly appointed inn. Many of the regulars were artists, of one sort or another, but also came the less talented in search of good fishing or merely good idling. And they found it, for the majority of the householders were people of brains as well as talent and by some mysterious management the tone of the social side of things was kept pretty much as it should be. Wealth counted for what it was worth, and no more. Genius counted in the same way, and was never overrated. Good nature and an amusing personality were perhaps the best assets one could bring to the conservative little community, and most of the shining lights possessed those in abundance. To many, the word harbor connotes a peaceful, serene bit of blue water, sheltered from rough winds and basking in the sunlight. This is far from a description of Headland Harbor, whose rocky shores and deep black waters were usually wind-swept and often storm-swept to a wild picturesqueness beloved of the picture painters.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Pennington Wise, Detective By drkhimxz Not quite as sophisticated a detective as Fleming Stone, Pennington Wise, nonetheless, is a Whiz Bang Super Sleuth, when all else has failed to unravel a really knotty problem. Of course, the prolific Carolyn Wells, had other sleuths in her stable, but these are the two most memorable. Though close to a century old, this mystery still more than holds its own with the average locked room stories of today, and is inferior to relatively few. Naturally, there is the inaccessible old New England house (atmospherically similar to the English Mansion), from which there is only one known exit to the mainland. A small group from this house, together with some guests from the nearby Village, is on that lone exit road, on the way to a luncheon picnic, when the beautiful young daughter (and only child) of the Establishment, informs the others that she has forgotten her camera and must go back to the house to get it. When she does not return after a decent interval, her father goes back to get her. Neither returns. After another interlude, one of the young guests runs back to the house to urge both to return before it becomes too late for the picnic proceed. Astonishment and Dismay. The Father has been shot dead and the daughter is nowhere to be found. Where can she be? There is only one known exit from the home on its promontory; and that was straddled by the picnic group. There is no other way down from the rocks on which the house rests, any effort to descend from the pinnacle to the sea below means instant death.Local law is stymied. Distraught, the widow seeks the help of the greatest detective in the United States, Pennington Wise. From there, the story is suitably baffling. Wells is a gifted writer you can trust to keep you in suspense and to give you much more than one would expect at these prices. Give her a try.

GREAT IDEAS to make more money on your RE outside the standard "box" - truly new money-making ideas By J This book is a great inventory of ways you have probably never thought to make money on your real estate before. This isn't "raise rents" and insulate your hot water pipes. From leveraging the "sharing" economy, implementing other small business or advertising into your real estate, working with tenants to generate additional income for everyone, and even using your building as a re-broadcasting tool - there is something for every real estate owner in this book. The formatting with step-by-step analysis of each potential revenue source provides a clearer guide of how to approach each potential new stream of income. The author personally gave me a suggestion about adding bicycles to my Airbnb unit, and here's a recent message and a review from 2 booked guests:"The bikes as an option was definitely the cherry on top for us." - Ryan, Florida; April 2015"The bikes were also a wonderful way of getting around and checking out the area, which has lots of cute..." Courtney, TX, March 2015That's more bookings, better reviews, and more income! One weekend stay like this pays for the bikes in their entirety. And they are not the first! Even the guests that don't use them appreciate they are there. Thanks for the advice and inspiration Al Williamson!

Rental Property, Landlord, Rental Properties By Russ in Elk Grove This book is a quick read because you can glance at an idea and know immediately if that idea might be appropriate for your situation. Some ideas will work in high cost housing, others in low cost housing. Some will work if your clientele are college students, or millennials, or older folks. This book explains the situations where an idea has promise, and then tells you what you should expect to invest (time and money).I appreciated that he covers what the unintended benefits (increase property value) and the possible problems (do I need a permit or insurance to do this?). Some ideas can turn a problem (insufficient parking) into a profit stream (operating a shared car service that attracts tenants who do not want to own their own cars.I also like the step-by-step how-to-get-started list at the end of each section.Bottom line - if you own residential rental property, several of these 40 ideas are things that you can turn into profit streams. The rest of them will stimulate you to look at your property in different ways and perhaps come up with a few ideas of your own.

This book is on a different vein, but is as equally helpful. The book focuses on how to generate ancillary, or non-rent income from investment properties, as a strategy to increase profit without increasing number of properties or debt load. I love that he uses the term collaborative economy to point out that we can partner with others, including tenants, to raise the income of both parties. It takes creative thinking, which this book starts to prime those creative thoughts.I appreciated the format of one summary page for each income generating idea. It forced me to slow down and really ponder if that strategy had any applicability to my rental investments. Al gives a lot of useful information in these summaries, but one of my favorite is identifying some nontangible benefits.
