The Mystery of 31 New Inn, by R. Austin Freeman

Review 'This man Austin Freeman is a wonderful performer' --Raymond Chandler

About the Author R. Austin Freeman is the doyen of the scientific division of detective writing, is best known for his character Dr John Thorndyke. A close and careful investigator and the outstanding medical authority in the field of detective fiction, R. Austin Freeman not only tested the wits of the reader but also inspired many modern detective forensic methods. Much of his long life was spent as a physician and surgeon at the Middlesex Hospital, London. He also held posts in West Africa and later was a medical officer at Holloway Prison. The most famous of the Edwardian detective writers, he rescued the detective story from "thrillerdom" and made it acceptable to a more discerning class of reader.

The background added so much to the story, and the descriptions made one feel as if they were there. The mystery in itself was well-woven, even if the reader connected the stories before the detectives did. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and am looking forward to more Dr. Thorndyke mysteries.

By Anne Wingate http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002RKR9Q4/ref=cm_cr_rev_prod_imgI LOVE Dr. Thorndyke, no matter which narrator is telling the story. This was especially good, with red herrings cluttering up the crime until it is hard to determine even whether there WAS a crime, much less who did it and why. I did figure out what was going on, but that might be because of specialized knowledge I have: Dr. Thorndyke is a CSI before CSIs were invented, and I was a CSI before being a CSI became fashionable. So I was able to follow, and a few times (because the point-of-view character wasn't one of the usuals) to precede, Dr. Thorndyke's reasoning. You might be able to. But whether you succeed or not in solving the crime before Thorndyke does, you'll certainly enjoy this old-time detective story.

By ATB / Molly Black Having gathered together a list of mystery, detective, and crime writers from Agatha Christies Secret Notebooks I turned to both Munsys and Gutenberg to find any of these influences and contemporaries of Ms. Christie. My delight upon finding myself thoroughly engrossed in this novel after the terrible dullness of a previous writer was great. I found that though the story is told in such a way that I knew the reasons and the murderer very quickly that none of my enjoyment in this very readable novel was hindered.I intend to read as many of this author's work as I can as not since Collected Works of Anna Katharine Green (25 Books) have I found such a readable writer from their shared era. This is the third book starring the very learned Dr. Thorndyke. His friend, and as of this book his junior, fulfills the role of sidekick in a typical manner. Dr. Jerris learns and shares, and even if you find it difficult (as I did) that he would not put two and two properly together, I at least found his learning certain things via his friend as instructive of good scientific reasoning as propounded by Dr. Thorndyke.I'm writing this review on an iPod Touch which has the Kindle application. That makes it difficult to keep track of my review. But it does mean I can rate this Kindle eBook properly - the mistakes and typos were few and the formatting unobtrusive and the eBook as a whole looked decent. For free I don't expect linked TOC - though it would be nice.On completion I can say that I highly recommend it.

Succeeds Both as a Captivating Detective Tale and Rich Historical Novel By A Customer A prominent Los Angeles trial lawyer, author Patrick Lynch has penned a complex tale that succeeds both as a mystery amateur detective story and a rich historical novel. Set on the Southwest Mexican-American border just after World War I, “Calexico” features an unlikely central character in the person of Abraham Lincoln Heller, a Brooklyn-born Jewish doctor who has fled a New York persecutor to start a second life practicing in the California desert town of Brawley, California. Reluctantly drafted by a wealthy American to track down his playboy son who has gone missing in Mexico, Heller’s odyssey takes us deep into the cultural mix that swirled around the international border towns of the region: American speculators, ranchers and oil barons, Chinese workers and Japanese businessmen, Hindi laborers, Mexican revolutionaries and prostitution slavery rings. As captivating as it is as a detective story, where Lynch’s novel really shines and sets itself apart from the not infrequent lawyer-writes-murder-mystery genre, is at the level of a rich historical novel. Swirling around Heller’s are the turbulent historical events of the time, including some rarely covered by American historians – the turbulent struggles for political power in post-revolutionary Mexico between General Álvaro Obregón and President Venustiano Carranza; the effort by Baja leader Coronel Cantú to maintain autonomy for his prosperous region with the support of American interests including Los Angeles powerhouse Harry Chandler as well as the Japanese government seeking to outflank China’s economic interest in the region; and the warring factions in our own American government as President Woodrow Wilson lay secretly incapacitated in the White House. Lynch masterfully intertwines the two threads right to the climactic end of this fine novel. I can’t wait to start the second book in Lynch’s Abraham Lincoln Heller series, “Holtville” – set in the backdrop of the construction of the Boulder Dam.

The walls of Ninurta keep its citizens safe.

Kai always believed the only danger to the city came from within. Now, with a rebel force threatening the fragile government, the walls have become more of a prison than ever.

To make matters worse, as Avan explores his new identity as an Infinite, Kai struggles to remind him what it means to be human. And she fears her brother, Reev, is involved with the rebels. With the two people she cares about most on opposite sides of a brewing war, Kai will do whatever it takes to bring peace. But she’s lost her power to manipulate the threads of time, and she learns that a civil war might be the beginning of something far worse that will crumble not only Ninurta’s walls but also the entire city.

In this thrilling sequel to Gates of Thread and Stone, Kai must decide how much of her humanity she’s willing to lose to protect the only family she’s ever known.

By Tonyalee All the FEELS.Gates of Thread and Stone was one of my favorite reads of 2014, so of course I would be all over The Infinite. To be quite honest, the is one of those rare occasions where the sequel is better than the first. The Infinite starts off not too long after Gates of Thread and Stone ended. Kai is staying at the White Court, struggling with the “loss” of Avan and now having lost access to the threads of time. Now that they are starting the rebuild of the city after the death of Ninu – the tension heats up with rebel sentinels, a brewing war and whether or not Kai can embrace her powers as Infinite.Hello, beautiful world. I mentioned in my review of Gates of Thread and Stone that I felt like the world building was info dumpy and I was lost on several occasions. But here, that was not the case. I ate it up! I can’t even explain how happy I am to get MORE of the world and how it’s branched out to the cities and countries surrounding Ninurta. It is nothing like I have ever “seen” and the descriptions are so vivid.Kai, in my opinion, has really come a long way and grown so much in The Infinite. She is still feisty, tough and so loyal to those that she loves. But she is now more involved with the political side of things, and has been training with Mason. She is struggling with guilt and she is really torn up about the events that lead Avan to becoming Infinite. She is also struggling with her powers and what it means for her if she embraces her Infinite side. The Infinite is full of angst. The scenes with Kai and Avan are so beautiful but heartbreaking at the same time. I couldn’t imagine having to see the one you love day in and day out, remembering everything but they remember nothing. And same goes Avan – to feel such a pull and strong emotions for someone who you can’t remember, and having to look at them knowing that they are suffering because you can’t remember and you’re not even sure you want to. But there is a lot of back and forth – on whether or not they will be together, or if they will ever be able to build a relationship. Avan doesn’t know who he is, literally. I was also a little thrown by the THING with Mason – but I thought it was handled well. It’s not a love triangle – to me. But that is all relative. Now, romance aside…I love that Lori doesn’t hold back. With anything. I have high respect for authors who are able to punch you in the gut with feels. Ones who kill off good people and main characters and have no hesitations about having their characters suffer. The Infinite has that ten fold. It adds more layers of despair and really makes you appreciate the characters and what they are going through. Also for what they are doing for the ones they love. Something major happens in the middle of the book – and I just could not handle it (in a good way). It was so sad… it was perfect. (I KNOW, I am awful). As with Gates of Thread and Stone – there were several plot twists thrown in. It’s actually quite hard to get into details without spoiling anything, so I wont even bother. Just know there are new characters introduced. New friends & enemies; more Mason. And death, betrayal, action, kissing and FEELS. ALL THE FEELS.Overall – If you couldn’t guess, I absolutely loved The Infinite. My heart was broken at the end, and I can’t wait for the next one — in hopes that Lori can mend it. I highly recommend this series if you haven’t started it yet.

Lee left us at, I was eager to be able to dive into the next book in that what now seems to be a series, not a sequel! (At least I truly hope there is a next book!)I continue to adore Kai as a protagonist. She's smart and savvy and still has that touch of hope about her. She lets her guard down and she's worried and still in love and I think that is amazing. Too many authors shy away from their kicking female protag to be head over heels at times and sometimes make questionable choices. She's also not all knowing-- she trusts and while her instincts sort of tug at her, she still wants to believe the best.We start off a bit after the first book ended, with things still in unrest and turmoil and Kai reacting in a way that is something you can truly relate to. Soon, things speed up a bit when a messenger comes from across the Wastelands--shocking everyone and made me pleased as punch to have it said out that yes, there are other people out there. The messenger is there because of danger to their community and they ask for help. Kai is sent with a contingent of sentinels to assess the threat.(Forgive me, I should have re-read GoTaS before reading this one and can't recall if Lori said there were other settlements.)She brings us this other community, like and very much unlike her city.So I won't spell out the entire book, I'll say that I adore the details of the city of Lanathrill, the bits and pieces put together and then talk of /more/ people and how much the world had changed. You get beautiful glimpses of the society that was there before and it paints a vivid image. The twists and turns do keep you on your toes (I suspected one, but not another) and keeps you turning the pages for more of what is going to happen.

We have Kai, Reev, and Avan dealing with the aftermath of what happened. Kai is dealing with finding out just who she is and what her powers mean. The end of Gates of Thread and Stone left me with a lot of questions and while some of those were answered, I feel like I have even more after finishing the Infinite!I absolutely love Lori M. Lee’s writing. There is just something about it that immediately draws me in and keeps me entertained and desperate to find out what happens. This book starts out with an amazing line just like the first book did. I love the descriptions in this book. I am always vividly aware of what is around Kai.Kai continues to impress me as a strong character. Her development and characterization in this novel is amazing and in some ways even better than in the first book. I really loved how Kai dealt with the events of both the first book and this book. This book takes us even further outside of Ninurta into a new land called Lanathrill. I loved how Lee expanded the world in this book. We realize that other people exist outside the walls of Ninurta and Etu Gahl. I also loved the new characters we are introduced to. They were a great contrast to Kai especially because they grew up in a different “world”.My only real complaint with this book is the lack of Reev and Avan for a lot of it. Yes, they are in the beginning and end but the middle part of this book is lacking. I came to really love those two and we do not get very much of them in this book. Especially Reev, the first book was all about finding him and in this book we continue to be with Kai who is not with him. Not having Avan for most of this book was sad because I love Kai and his interactions and those were lacking. However, we did get to spend more time with Mason which was nice. This was another great installment in this series and I cannot wait to see what happens next! The ending especially left us hanging now that we know who and what was behind the events of The Infinite.*I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

I appreciated the author's no nonsense approach to a topic that rarely seems to get serious, sincere examination. Loved the personal anecdotes - she obviously knows her subject well.I whole-heartedly recommend "The End of Ghost Hunting" by Julie Pellegrino. You'll never think of ghosts the same way again!Looking forward to her next book!

The author's compassion for those who've crossed over is readily apparent, and frankly refreshing. This was a very easy read and hard to put down. I felt as if I was sitting with a friend, drinking a cup of tea, while listening to this wise soul divulging her knowledge. Cannot wait for her next book!!

By Roy Branson Very informative book on the various aspects of spirit communication and the types of spirits we may encounter. Julie has a viewpoint that is different from mainstream but definitely rings true. It is nice to read something from someone who knows what they are talking about.

Horatio Alger, Jr. ( January 13, 1832 – July 18, 1899) was a prolific 19th-century American author, best known for his many juvenile novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of middle-class security and comfort through hard work, determination, courage, and honesty. His writings were characterized by the "rags-to-riches" narrative, which had a formative effect on America during the Gilded Age. Essentially, all of Alger's juvenile novels share the same theme: a teenage boy works hard to escape poverty. Often though, it is not the hard work itself that rescues the boy from his fate, but rather some extraordinary act of bravery or honesty. The boy might return a large sum of lost money or rescue someone from an overturned carriage. This brings the boy—and his plight—to the attention of a wealthy individual.Horatio Alger, Jr. ( January 13, 1832 – July 18, 1899) was a prolific 19th-century American author, best known for his many juvenile novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of middle-class security and comfort through hard work, determination, courage, and honesty. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The Flawed Little Princess By AvidReader923(@Hey, It Was Free!) For the third book readers are introduced to the young heir of Greece, the princess Phoibe. Tucked away from society, taught and raised by the priestesses Phoibe has only felt alone and fear. Her mother was the only kind person to her, but after her mother died and left her in the hands of the temple, Phoibe has known nothing but shame for her shortcomings. Phoibe prayed for a savior and Mismatch came promising to not only take her away but save her from the same fate he had fallen to and those in their bloodline. Knowing her mother is not dead but semi-alive in the grotesque state Phoibe is ready to venture out beyond the High Priestesses reach and search for her mother. If only she could outlast the Priestess while awaiting Mismatch return, her only friend and sense of strength is found in a shadow named Lantos. In the end he may just be her last hope of deliverance. Overall, heartbreaking story, Poor Phoibe is only 6 years old and has so much thrust upon her with responsibilities and politics that it's unimaginable to believe she is only a child. That High Priestess is pure evil and the things she does to innocent Phoibe makes you want to cry for the young girl. Seeing how strong Phoibe is now definitely shows she will only become a stronger character in the books to come.------Read more of my reviews at: http://heyitwasfree.blogspot.com/------

I can't wait to see what happens to her as the series goes on.Phoibe is next in line for the throne of Greece at the age of 6. Phoibe has been treated bad by the High Priestess because she has a lisp. They treat her like she is stupid and constantly put her down. She learns that there is a curse on her family. Mismatch asked her not to speak to anyone incase they tried to trick her into speaking the words that set into motion the curse. The curse turns them into a grotesque or gargoyle to watch over the temple.Lantos is Phoibe's only friend besides Mismatch. She isn't sure what he is but he is the only person she trust herself talk with. They have a connection. He tries to protect her. He teaches her to talk to him with her mind. I like the friendship they have. When everyone is knocking Phoibe down Lantos is building her back up. Who doesn't want a friend like that?I don't want to give too much away. I love these characters. I am dying to know what will happen next. Lizzy Ford has me hook, line, and sinker. It is very important that you read these stories in order. Book 1 is Alessandra. Book 2 is Mismatch. This is book 3. If you don't read them in order you will be lost.

Great addition to the Omega Series...story line and character are truly amazing By maricartav In the 3rd installment of the Omega Series you are given a clear view of Phoibe, the next Queen of Greece and a direct descendent of Mismatch who is only 6 years old. She is a lovely little girl with a stutter that leaves her handlers to be cruel and abusive towards her. As we get to delve deeper into her life you find yourself anxious for her rescue so she can be removed from all she is going through. She is fearful now of what her future holds and is counting down the time until Mismatch is supposed to get her and remove her from her horrible fate which falls all the royals of this line - to become a grotesque...a gargoyle. Since she is unaware of what has become of Mismatch you - as the reader are even more pained for her knowing he is not coming as he promised and unsure of what every day holds for her. It is a great third book and as with the other two books you become absorbed into this world and feel such a part of the story and characters. I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Even though the book does delve into the haunted stories behind the thirteen locations covered in the book, almost the majority the chapters deal with the fascinating and well researched history behind each site. I thoroughly enjoyed every chapter, and would highly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Arkansas history or the paranormal in general.

By craftygirl1961 I actually purchased this directly from the author during her visit to our local library and it was a joy to meet an author who so thoroughly enjoys her subject. I'm only 3 chapters in and thoroughly enjoying the book. While Layne does give the haunted history of each of her 13 venues, she gives an extensive and well-researched history of each as well. I learned things about my state capitol I never knew.I honestly hope she does another with more venues farther from her home area of Little Rock. It has made me want to take a trip to my state capitol to see some of the haunted places she ahs described so well. Seven of the venues are outside the Little Rock vicinity and it is certainly fun to read the history, haunted and otherwise of each historic site she chose.

"Oh Danny Boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling..." Annie sang quietly, holding Derek's baby blue cardigan and trying to detect a familiar smell. The same cardigan he was supposed to wear at his christening. Annie and her friends leave Ireland in 1926 young and optimistic, hoping to find a better life in Liverpool. Only things do not turn out the way they had imagined. Annie falls in love, marries and starts a family of her own. But with the onset of World War Two comes tragedy and loss, testing Annie's strength to the limit. Little does she realize that the salvation of her loved ones lies partly with a German woman named Hilde, whose life and situation mirrors Annie's own. Liverpool Connection is the second book of a trilogy and is based on a true story. The first book, The Night I Danced with Rommel, tells Hilde's story. The books are historical novels based on facts and tell the writer's family history.

Her first book "The Night I Danced With Rommel" gave us an insight into Hilde, and "Liverpool Connection" centres around Annie and the hardships a family face during wartime. I loved the way Hilde found a way into the story. (The German side of the story)All the characters we can all relate to, and are so likeable, that I felt I knew them, and felt for them every step of the story. I especially loved Annie, Flo and Kieran.I love the way Elisabeth writes, and it is a very easy read. I can see all the stories made into a movie. I look forward very much to reading her 3rd novel.

By Beverly Clark This was a great story.  I liked the friendship between Flo, Annie and Kiernan.  More than a few times Kiernan’s antics made me grin.  The author definitely crafted a perfect synergy between the three characters. There are moments of sadness but also moments of joking, giggling and enjoying the feeling of being young and alive.  We follow Annie as she ventures outside her comfort zone, eventually marries and has children.  I felt I knew Annie as the author writes in a way that makes the people come alive.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Lives that are entwined ... By Clement This is an intriguing family story set in the years leading up to and during World War II. Annie and two friends leave Ireland for Liverpool in the 1930s. They settle in among their relatives and friends who have already relocated to England. Annie soon meets and marries George, and over the years they produce six children. We read of their happy times and hardships in Liverpool's tenements before and during the war. The story also follows what happens to their family and friends who enlist for military service. As a result of the war, some of them become involved with characters in the author's first novel, 'The Night I Danced with Rommel'. This adds a different level of complication and intrigue, and we hear what happens from both points of view. There is plenty of hope, despair and some remarkable outcomes. The ending is clever, and leaves the reader wanting more. May I point out that the author's married name is Marrion, and that her first name is Elisabeth. Keep this in mind as you read 'Liverpool Connection' as this is a clue to an interesting turn of events.

By Em W This time, we’re catching up on what Talia and Eric are going through to rescue Kenly and also keep themselves out of containment. This book has all of the characters we readers know and love, and we get caught up with everyone’s ups and downs during this brewing war. The series characters have become complicated, well-thought out, and complete people. Each character’s personality leaps off the page, and the reader quickly gets pulled into the story. Seeing the progression of Talia and Eric’s relationship is especially interesting, and with this book told from both their perspectives, it really lets you see how much they are sharing and keeping secret from each other. They have a real relationship and deep connection, though it’s tested a lot in this book. I liked that this book was set simultaneously with Kenly’s story, as it shows readers all of the planning (and going off-book) that went into her rescue. It confirms how much Talia and Kenly mean to each other as mentor and mentee. This book is a quick, fast-paced read, with action throughout, so you’re never bored. The ending, like most Sophie Davis endings, leaves you hanging and wanting more, yet you’re also scared to find out what’s going to happen next. If you’ve read any other Sophie Davis books, this has to be on your must-read list; and if you haven’t read her other books, it’s time you finally started because you’ll be instantly pulled into the worlds she creates so perfectly.

By Ashlyn Barker I was excited to begin reading Unforgettable as I’ve enjoyed all of the Talented series by Sophie Davis and always look forward to the next book. The last book, Exiled: Kenly’s Story, and Unforgettable tell a similar story that covers the same period of time, but it’s written from different perspectives. Because Unforgettable is written from the perspectives of Erik and Talia it completely changes the story; you won’t feel like you’re reading the same book twice. I love the storyline of Talia and Erik so I enjoyed Unforgettable significantly more than Exiled. I found that this book transported me back into the Talented Saga that I fell in love with and will happily continue to follow.Sophie Davis does a wonderful job creating original stories that are believable yet fall in the paranormal/fantasy range. So many books in similar genres seem to follow overdone storylines so I love that Sophie continues to keep things fresh. Personally, I hope she sticks with the main perspectives of Talia and Erik in the future as those are the characters that I fell in love with and I find myself dreaming about what will happen next in the series. While I enjoyed Exiled and learning more about Kenly in the previous book, the book didn’t capture my attention nearly as much as Unforgettable. I would highly recommend Unforgettable! It took me a chapter or two to remember what happened in the last book and engage with the material, but once I did, I couldn’t put the book down; Sophie hooked me in yet again!*I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.*

A Woman of Love (Honour, Love, and Courage Series), by Marlow Kelly

Review readersfavorite.com/book-review/a-woman-of-loveReviewed by Jacqueline Varlotta for Readers' FavoriteA Woman of Love (Honour, Love and Courage series) written by Marlow Kelly was really fun to read and left me wanting to read the next book in the series. This short, historical story takes place in England, with characters that I could relate to, with their realistic qualities. Only a good author is able to do this with each character in their stories. Annabel was determined to fight to protect her child Beth, no matter what the cost to her own life. James put his life on the line to protect her and her child from Eliot, who had made Annabel feel trapped with no way out until she met James. Elliot was the wicked character in the story that gave the story its plot, despite how unlikable his character was. Elliot's motives had me rooting for Annabel to escape from his clutches and for James to save her in the end.Nicholas, James' brother who plotted the whole scene to catch the evil Eliot, was as likable as his brother. His investigation of Eliot and his involvement in this story, though brief, was interesting and left me hanging. Placing Annabel and her daughter in danger and involving his brother was something that made the story more intriguing. A Woman of Love by Marlow Kelly was a great short story romance that I really enjoyed reading. I recommend this story and I intend to go back and read the rest of the series.

A great second novella from Marlow Kelly By BevW I was given a copy of this book by the author to read in exchange for an honest review. This is the second book in the Honour, Love and Courage series and as with the first book A Woman of Honour, this one is novella length. The timing of receiving this book was interesting for me as another book I was currently reading was a factual book about sex trafficking, so the beginning of this novella was quite a shock for me. Set in Victorian England 1858, the heroine, Lady Annabel Peters, was forced into marriage and now was being pimped out by her husband to a man she had never met under threat of serious consequences. My initial reaction was to be extremely upset by this as it seemed to be a clear-cut case of sexual slavery. That is certainly what was intended by her husband, who was attempting to use her body to settle gambling debts. James, the man she was to sleep with turned out to be completely different from what she had expected and initially had no intent to sleep with her at all rather wanting to use her to incriminate her husband.Annabel and James had an almost instant appeal for each other and they did end up making love because Annabel pushed it being afraid of what her husband would do if she failed to appease his debt. She was shocked to discover that in James she had an ally willing to help her escape her current desperate situation and rescue her daughter from a prior marriage. How they managed to achieve all of this made for an interesting and engaging read. The reader will also meet James’s brother Nicholas who is a private detective and he was such an interesting character that I hope he will some day have his own story. This story ended with a new beginning and I would have loved it if the author had continued the story so we could learn more about Annabel and James. I will certainly look forward to reading any full-length novels she eventually publishes. There were minor areas that could have been clarified just a bit, but on the whole this was a great quick read and I will look forward to more in the series.4.5 stars

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fast Paced Historical Romance Novella By Haley Rating 3.5This is the first book I've read by Marlow Kelly. I didn't realize it was the second in the Honor, Love and Courage series, but it was a standalone novella. Set in Victorian England 1858 this was a fast paced read. I am always curious about romances where the woman is already married. It turns out that the lord had coerced the widow Lady Annabel Peters into marrying him for her money. The hero of the story, James, meets Annabel under interesting circumstances. Her husband expects her to sleep with James to pay off a gambling debt. However, James doesn't want to take Annabel against her will. He really just wants to question her. Things go far beyond questioning as there is an almost instant attraction between them. Annabel has been ignored and abused by her husband for so long that she craves a gentleman's touch, especially a gentleman as nice as James.Once Annabel confides in James that she is a victim and is afraid she and her daughter from a previous marriage in danger, he vows to protect her from her husband. It was an enjoyable read although I wish it had more substance. This novella was perfect when you only have a few minutes to squeeze in a good story.I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

But from the very start James was totally not what she was expecting. Indeed, he may well be the nly way to save herself, and her daughter. This is one of those easy reads, not too complicated, not too mant twists and turns. A little bit of danger, a touch of violence, a splash of passion. Not too much to tax your brain but just enough to keep you interested.A perfect hangover cure, if ever you are in need of one!Written from both James and Annabel's POV, it pushes all my buttons. Its short, but thats just what a hangover cure/quick bath read/quick read before sleep/a lunch break read is, short and sweet. Took me 45 minutes in my lunch break at the dayjob.I loved Annabel. She knew that she needed help to escape her husband, and save her daughter. james was just the man to help her. Nicholas, James' brother, saw that, he knew she needed help, but equally that James needed help too.All in all, a solid 4 star read.**same worded review appears on Goodreads, Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk**

Can't Have a Coronation without a Crown By The Just-About-Average Ms. M Alain Duval, happily married to Eugènie, gainfully employed by the Ministry of Police, has apparently spent the four years since his work on identifying the would-be assassinators of First Consul Bonaparte on cases less demanding and certainly less high-profile. But where is the drama in routine police work? Every so often there needs to be a Really Big Crime, just to keep our favorite Parisian policeman on his toes. And we get one, on the eve of Napoleon’s coronation extravaganza. The lovely, jewel-encrusted imperial crown intended for Empress Joséphine vanishes from the workshop of the master jeweler, M. Margueritte. Not a theft in the middle of the night, or early in the morning before even the servants and apprentices were awake. Not as trite as all that. The crown disappears in the middle of the day when the workshop is literally crowded with folks, which means a true sleight of hand has occurred. The jeweler is understandably distraught, knowing he will be blamed for the loss. The Minister of Police, Joseph Fouché, cares only about recovering the crown as quickly as possible—he has about two full days—and with the utmost secrecy and diplomacy. Fouché doesn’t care about the jeweler’s plight, but he cares very much about the emperor’s displeasure, which will be swift and monumental. He also cares about discretion, since three of the people in the workshop at the crucial time were Napoleon’s sisters, Their Imperial Highnesses Elisa, Pauline, and Caroline. Quelle horreur! So Duval is called in, with all sorts of largely unnecessary instructions about the proper protocol for interrogating newly-minted imperial princesses. With his trusted associates, the presentable Fournier and the often disreputable but indispensable Lebebvre, Duval sets off to work his way through the usual suspects—workmen, servants, apprentices, acquaintances, and two of the equerries who had accompanied the princesses to the workshop to inspect their own jewelry. And with as much tact as he can muster, Duval will have to interview the princesses. It is well within his character that the clever, wily, and often dangerous Fouché handed this job off to someone else as quickly as possible. Elisa would have eaten him for breakfast. For those who know something about Napoleon’s family, especially his sisters, this little mystery is right on point. A kind person would compare them to the three witches in Shakespeare’s Macbeth, or a trio of harpies from Greek mythology. Both are accurate, and the sisters are portrayed with just the right amount of historical verisimilitude—Elisa is clever, sharp, and androgynous; Pauline is seductive, and sends poor Duval almost fleeing from her chaise longue in horror; and Caroline has all the charm of a teenaged fishwife from the docks of Marseille. The rest of this brief novel is, like its predecessor, an easy read, but not because it is somehow simple. No, it is well-written, and the historical details, in addition to the sisters, are spot-on. The author, bless her heart, understands that good historical fiction includes correct social norms, the appropriate cultural milieu, street names accurate for the time, and the other minutia of daily living in Paris in December 1804. Any historical novel that I can read without reaching for my virtual highlighter is a rarity. This is one of them.Oh, by the way, the solution to the theft is not only amusing but also very historically probable.

Alain Duval, a police officer in Napoleonic France is called in to find and apprehend the culprit or culprits who have managed to steal the Empress Josephine’s crown, just days before Napoleon is due to be crowned Emperor. Although the actual theft of the jewel encrusted crown is a work of fiction, the writer manages to engage the reader in a way that suggests the actual event was indeed factual. This is a clever technique and combining this with historical accuracy and understanding of the nuances and social behaviour of the period make for an entertaining read. The reader is kept guessing right till the last pages and can only speculate about how such an event would have been received in the Napoleonic period. Anyone who likes history and has a particular interest in the France of Napoleon will find the Duval stories to their liking. I look forward to another Duval story from this versatile and talented author.

A tricky one for the Emperor's agent By Eddie Nessuno Napoleon’s Police agent, Duval, faces one of his biggest challenges so far when the new Empress Josephine’s crown goes missing. He has to tread a dangerous path when suspects include princesses. As always, the author’s skillful writing and beautiful sense of the period take the reader on journey that is both gripping and instructive. A good read.

Pearls combines paranormal romance and alternate history for a story anyone can sink their teeth--or fangs--in to. Another kick ass series from one of my favorite authors. If L.M. Pruitt isn't on your watch list, she should be!--Rachel Rawlings From the incomparable mind of the writer who brought you the critically acclaimed WINGED saga comes a breathtaking, sexy, and dangerous new series Between the hell of humanity and the heaven of eternal life lies a world of guilty pleasures…. In the aftermath of the conquering of what had once been the United States of America, Marguerite Saint-Laurent was given a choice: lose her New Orleans home to the new vampyre rulers or become the lover of the King’s confidant, Duke Grégoire Barthlémy. Fifteen years later, Marguerite is a lady in her own right, a close friend of King Bienvenu, and headmistress of the Saint-Laurent School for Exceptional Young Women and Men. Her days are filled with educating future members of the demimonde, her nights with the Duke. But underneath the glitz and glitter of the New Orleans Court, discord and animosity are brewing—and no one, not even those closest to the throne, are safe. Political intrigue, civilized violence, sexual scandals… be sure not to forget your smelling salts…. (Part One of two--Part Two will be released in May 2015)

A Book to Sink Your Teeth Into By Amazon Customer Pearls is a unique, intriguing tale taking place in an alternate reality after the Civil War in which Vampyres, yes Vampyres, rule the day! Pearls is such a fun, juicy book to read, like a guilty pleasure, and will appeal to any Steampunk or Paranormal lover, all done with a little Dystopian flair. I only wish it had been longer, and I can't wait to read number two!

ANOTHER GREAT SERIES FOR L.M By Patricia statham Ok I have been following this author since I read her very first book in the Winged series and her Jude Madelyn series . This is a new series that I am absolutely in love with. I devoured this book in one day . As I do with most of her books I mean who wouldn't want to read a book set in a alternate time after the civil war. Where vampire are taking over and running everything . The humans are the minority as the vampyres are the ruling class. See I have you thinking already don't I. The story starts when we meet Marguerite is given the chose of loosing her house to the ruling Vampyres or becoming the companion to the Duke Gregoire Barthlemy. As we read we jump ahead 15yrs where we see Marguerite and Duke Gregoire happy and running the school for exceptional young women and men. Who will eventually become companions to the vampyres in court. The duke is the confident to the King . But if you have ever read anything to do with courts and rulers . There are always discord and backstabbing going on. There is no exception here . There is a a big discord brewing underneath all the glitz of the court. Will anyone be safe when the battle begins . I love the characters in this book, they are doing what is expected and willing to do. Marguerite was a young wall flower who did what she needed to do to keep her house. you see her become a very strong woman who is in love with a very strong man who also is a vampyre. You can feel the love that is between them as you read. They both together are such a great couple . L.M wrote them which such a passion , that leaps right off the page. The evil characters in the book are well you don't know how to take them . They are just evil but hide that evil so well under the guise of their titles in court . You just don't what is up with them but you know that all hell is going to let loose once they set their evil plan in motion. There is also a sexy smoldering side to this book also . You will swoon when you meet the Duke . I know my heart did a pitter patter when I met him. He is hot giggling and swooning . Now let me tell you , I adored this book. If you like vampyres with a great historical twist . This is the book for you . You will be devouring this book in one sitting. There is romance, intrigue and some laughter. You will swoon and shake your head . You will try and figure out what is going on and trust me you will love every second of this book. The pearl scene alone will make you rethink the way you wear pearls. Just read the book and you will get my point . Cause it makes me want to run out and buy a long strand of pearls . So if you want a read that you can sink your teeth into . Check out PEARLS . I know you will not be disappointed at all . I think you will thank me in the end LOL.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. very original teen novel By tia dalton I was hooked on this book. I thought after the first couple of paragraphs that it might end up being rudementary or boring but then I was hooked after the first couple of pages. It has a great twist instead of the typical magical background and had characters with great chemistry. It ended on a cliff hanger which seems to be the new way to write books but I didnt put the book down once I started and immediately wanted to buy the second novel.
