No good deed goes unpunished. In 1920, in a remote corner of California, Dr. Abraham Lincoln Heller agrees to help look in Mexico for the missing son of a prominent farmer. He stumbles into an international white slavery ring, the last battles of the Mexican Revolution, the richest man in the world’s plan to spark a second war between the United States and Mexico, and the shady sideline of a rising Hollywood star.

Succeeds Both as a Captivating Detective Tale and Rich Historical Novel By A Customer A prominent Los Angeles trial lawyer, author Patrick Lynch has penned a complex tale that succeeds both as a mystery amateur detective story and a rich historical novel. Set on the Southwest Mexican-American border just after World War I, “Calexico” features an unlikely central character in the person of Abraham Lincoln Heller, a Brooklyn-born Jewish doctor who has fled a New York persecutor to start a second life practicing in the California desert town of Brawley, California. Reluctantly drafted by a wealthy American to track down his playboy son who has gone missing in Mexico, Heller’s odyssey takes us deep into the cultural mix that swirled around the international border towns of the region: American speculators, ranchers and oil barons, Chinese workers and Japanese businessmen, Hindi laborers, Mexican revolutionaries and prostitution slavery rings. As captivating as it is as a detective story, where Lynch’s novel really shines and sets itself apart from the not infrequent lawyer-writes-murder-mystery genre, is at the level of a rich historical novel. Swirling around Heller’s are the turbulent historical events of the time, including some rarely covered by American historians – the turbulent struggles for political power in post-revolutionary Mexico between General Álvaro Obregón and President Venustiano Carranza; the effort by Baja leader Coronel Cantú to maintain autonomy for his prosperous region with the support of American interests including Los Angeles powerhouse Harry Chandler as well as the Japanese government seeking to outflank China’s economic interest in the region; and the warring factions in our own American government as President Woodrow Wilson lay secretly incapacitated in the White House. Lynch masterfully intertwines the two threads right to the climactic end of this fine novel. I can’t wait to start the second book in Lynch’s Abraham Lincoln Heller series, “Holtville” – set in the backdrop of the construction of the Boulder Dam.
