4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Aching Beautiful By Gary Ward Caroline Miller gives us the remembrances of a man from when he was a young boy in rural America of 1939. Through sketches of everyday life, family, relationships, good humor and anguish we feel a genuine love and connectedness to the stories and characters. The beauty of the human experience is discovered by the young boy and we get to revel in his ever deepening understanding. I was so moved by the first few stories that I had to put the book down for a break. Was I being so easily manipulated or was this beautifully told story really that good? After finishing it I decided that great art is in the experience of it and I had a wonderful, powerful experience. Bravo to Caroline Miller.

The oldest of two brothers packs family photograph albums after his mother's passing in 1979, and the images evoke memories from 1939-40.Sometimes funny, occasionally poignant, Heart Land is a first-rate, observant look at prewar life in a small Ohio town. It is a time and place that are mythic now. Honesty, courage, and caring, friends, relatives, family and community are linked in generational and geographic semi-isolation, and every one knows and (mostly) cares about everybody else. Adults try to understand, children struggle to live up to adult values, and small incidents loom large as major life lessons are drawn from them.Integrity and compassion underlie Heart Land's sensibility. Its people are real living, breathing human beings. Miller's work is engaging; an often lyric expression of small-town Midwestern America left not so long behind, with solid, reliable echoes that still lead to a simple, but well justified life.

Verbout In a nutshell, it's the story of two young boys and their misadventure throughout one year of their young life. The story is presented through independent chapters highlighting various experiences they share. Oliver, being the older of the two, have many of the stories center around him. His mishaps, misgivings and misunderstandings. Having had the privilege of reading Caroline Miller's other excellent books, it is amazing to me how Caroline writes dialogue for children equally as well as she does for adults, somehow knowing exactly how each generation would have spoken to the other. The feelings, conversations and activities of two young boys so colorfully placed onto paper. What a gift!! Difficult to pick a favorite chapter, but if I had to it would be Herman's friends mother as she attempted to teach her son how to cook with the short time she had to live. Another favorite chapter would have to be "Of Ghosts and Goblins and Little Green Men." Once you start reading this book you will not be able to put it down!! I enjoy Caroline's writing for a number of reasons. Without warning she throws fun, exciting new words, Her works raise you to a different level of understanding and I am grateful to her for that. Her style of writing is so appealing, informative, intelligent, relevant, full of a lot of terrific information. Also enjoyable are her metaphors which are quite often very humorous! Although sometimes they are exact opposite and just takes your breath away! I love to linger on some of her metaphors and almost always, on her last sentence. I admire her talent!Really a must read as I believe, at least for me, are all of her books.

Well, I was wrong! I couldn't have imagined the twists and turns. Readers get to see the fates of Syrinada,Malachi and Demetrius. Some old friends/enemies make appearances and some new characters show up and you either like them or you want to fight them. Some questions are answered about Sy and you see her struggle to be her own person and not who everyone thinks she should be.I loved that Jessica Cage put more action in this book. Romance is there, but Sy starts to show her power. I read this in one evening and even though I had questions answered more popped up. When I finished I found myself wondering when book 3 was coming out.

After reading book one in this series it seemed I waited forever for book two, lol! It was well worth the wait. Beautifully writen The Test is just as filling as The Call. I love a good fantasy book this one is also filled with mystery and action in the form of Syrinada's journey to her stone. I'll again wait patiently for book 3. I received this as a gift from the author but will be purchasing to show my support.

Interesting, but rambling By Dee Ann Miller Provides valuable insights into the social issues in this era of American expansion conflicting with brutal, raw racism that was so prevalent in the 19th century. Idealistic and extremely magical in the simple fixes at times. Most unrealistic, to the point of being absurd were the frequent, superstitious "appearances" of the deceased mother who refuses to stop showing up in the form of bizarre visits, recognized as the scent of lilacs! I found that unnecessary part of an otherwise plausible plot to be simply annoying.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An Obvious Mystery By PT Dilloway To summarize this story in one sentence it's about a kid who is very, very deep in denial about his sexuality. It's pretty obvious to the reader after about 20 pages but it takes Sydney the whole book to finally figure out the obvious. There were times near the end where I wished I could have grabbed him and shouted into his face, "You're gay! Deal with it!"Perhaps as a way to mask his homosexuality, 16-year-old Sydney Derouski builds this whole elaborate fantasy about an "angel" named Kemory, whose "spirit" he's somehow absorbed and needs to give back. This has led him to slit his wrists in an attempt to enter the "spirit world" so he can meet Kemory again. He survives the attempt, but is sent to a mental hospital for treatment--for the third time at least.Then Sydney gets a look at teen heartthrob Kipp Kemo and wouldn't you know that Kipp just so happens to be a dead ringer for Kemory? So he starts obsessing about him, hanging posters on the walls and writing a letter and stuff.It all seems pretty cut-and-dried to everyone except Sydney and therapist, but then there's a new wrinkle: Kipp has apparently been drawing pictures of Sydney and seems to confirm the details of Sydney's fantasy. So Kipp's mother brings him to the mental hospital to see if that helps.It's not that surprising to find out the only way for Sydney to transfer Kipp/Kemory's spirit back is for them to make out as often as possible. He of course rationalizes this with the angel fantasy. Or at least it still seems like a fantasy except for how Kipp knows Sydney.What makes the book compelling is that bit of uncertainty about Sydney's fantasy. Even by the end this isn't fully resolved, so the reader is left to make their own conclusions. There are also some other pieces that don't quite fit the puzzle, the identity of Sydney's father for instance.Besides his sexuality and possible insanity, Sydney has a lot of other problems. His mother is a verbally-abusive alcoholic who uses him mostly for a maid. His small size and half-Cherokee heritage makes him a frequent target of bullies, who get tacit approval from adults. Be that as it may, it might explain why he fantasizes about an angel.Overall this is a well-written book featuring compelling characters and just a little twist of paranormal. I just wish it wouldn't have taken Sydney so long to wise up. Of course if we had a more open, accepting society especially back in the 1970s it would have been a lot easier for him. I'm just saying.BTW, there was one issue on the formatting: it seemed the publisher double-spaced the text, which looks odd.

Not because I didn't like Angel Kemory, quite the contrary, but because like Angel Kemory, I was afraid this book was going to make it difficult for me to be productive for a few days while I read it. My fears were proven completely true. I read this on breaks at work and lying in bed before sleep. Finished in two days, I got nothing at all productive done aside from my work duties.This book pulled me in and refused to let go. I connected with Sydney in a very different way than I did Kemory, and a lot of his reactions to things reminded me almost too much of myself. He was angry and frustrated at a world that had taken away everything he had really loved. He lashed out defensively at everyone around him, including those who cared about him and wanted only to help. Beneath that rough-edged attitude though, he held a passionate, romantic soul that was begging to be let out.At its core, this book is about a boy seeking independence, self-identity, and the love he had lost. He fought for freedom in all the wrong ways, and acceptance with all the wrong people. All very much like myself. Despite the unusual nature of their connection, Sydney and Kemory hold a special kind of bond that left me feeling both warmed and heartbroken, and remembering a love of my own, lost long ago.Short version: This book is beautiful, painful, heart-warming, and heart-breaking all at the same time. Read it. Seriously.

Gay romance is a favorite genre of mine, but I also love suspense and paranormal. Sydney's Spaceship had all of these!In the beginning, I kept reading because I was interested in this kid who was being bullied. He just got out of a mental hospital? I had to know if he was really crazy, or if he really did have some kind of an angel.Sydney seems like a troublemaker at first, but he's really a good guy who has had a difficult life and has been labeled a bad kid.Kipp is so different from Sydney, it's really funny sometimes! He is very prissy and Sydney is just NOT!When Sydney met Kipp, I wondered if he really was an angel or just someone he had known before and maybe because of his issues didn't remember. How long had they known each other? When did they meet?The romance was really sweet, and not false at all. I like how Sydney is always true to himself. His reactions are very real, and sometimes he is afraid of his feelings.

About the Author Emerson Hough (1857-1923) taught school before studying law at the University of Iowa, graduating in 1880. Hough was admitted to the bar in 1882 and practiced law at White Oaks, New Mexico, but found it had no appeal for him. He turned to a literary career by taking camping trips and writing about them for publication. His body of work eventually included 27 novels and hundreds of short stories and articles.

Hough's early works included "The Singing Mouse Stories," for children, in 1895 and the nonfiction "The Story of the Cowboy" in 1897. He had his first major success in 1902 with the novel "The Mississippi Bubble," which became a best-seller. "The Way of the West" followed the next year.

For Faith, Love, and Hope By Scrapple8 The historical novel 'The Mississippi Bubble' by Emerson Hough was well-received by the American reading public upon its release, ranking 4th in sales among all American novels that debuted in 1902. The book is a fictional account of the life of Scottish financier John Law, who reached his professional apex as the Controller General of Finances in France during the early 18th century. Law was appointed by Duc d'Orléans, the regent for King Louis XV, to implement his financial plan for the French economy, starting with the notes circulated by the public.Hough drew on a book by Charles Mackay called 'Memoirs of Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds' for his background knowledge of John Law and the Mississippi Bubble. The colorful portrait of John Law by Mackey forms the character used by Emerson Hough in 'The Mississippi Bubble.' Both books - the Mackey book and Hough's novel - are available for free as e-books from Project Gutenberg.Readers who want to make up their own minds about John Law will be disappointed by reading this novel alone. Still, the novel has some merit. The story establishes a point of view sympathetic to Law, through fabricated events and a generous consideration of Law's policies. Hough suggests that the Duke of Orleans and his advisors, D'Argenson and Dubois, were the parties responsible for the Mississippi Bubble by their mismanagement of Law's plan.The biography of John Law on Wikipedia has no mention of Law visiting America. The events of Book 2 in the novel appear entirely invented - however, Hough offers some excellent writing in this part of the novel, describing the American frontier from the viewpoint of one with a wealth of background knowledge of life on the frontier.Some may take exception to Hough's characterizations of 'hook-nosed Jews,' but such were the times. People make similar charges of Booth Tarkington, for his novels don't survive today's tests of political correctness. If those sorts of things bother you, then don't read the book.The subprime mortgage meltdown of 2008 brought the topic of investment bubbles back into public consciousness. The original version of this book was published in the wake of the 1901 stock market bubble, created when Edward Harriman and associates of J. Pierpont Morgan bid up the price of Northern Pacific stock.For a time, the Mackay book was discredited as too sensationalist for serious scholarship, which invariably tricked down to novels that relied on Mackay's narrative, such as The Mississippi Bubble. Historians have revised their opinion about Mackay, but The Mississippi Bubble by Emerson Hough remains largely forgotten today. Even the Wikipedia entry about The Mississippi Bubble, which discusses the Mackay book, has no mention of this novel by Hough.No topic has been written about like the American West, so invariably some of the famous, earlier scribes have been replaced by more modern voices. Emerson Hough is an underrated chronicler of the American West, and his novels and historical works deserve a second look. With The Mississippi Bubble available for free on PG, maybe scholars can take a second look on this novel. I enjoyed reading the novel.This review is based on the original version of The Mississippi Bubble published in April 1902 by the Bowen-Merrill Company of Indianapolis, IN. There was a version of this book available for free from Project Gutenberg that had about thirty minor errors and variances with the paper version of the book. Those errors have recently been corrected by Project Gutenberg. By Interested Reader This book is not my normal genre, but I started reading it on my wife's kindle and couldn't put it down. Between the accurate reporting of the early World War II history and the compelling romantic developments, this is a book that is information rich. The complex relationship between Merrylei and her Japanese love interest is presented with the complexities that existed at that time in Hawaii and the United States. The final resolution is warm and satisfying without being syrupy. This is a book that a man can read without reluctance or scruples. Ms. Wilding knows how to write.

A Beautifully-crafted Historical Romance By Enthusiastic Reader This is a book that offers much to the reader, even if historical romance is not the typical genre one invests time in. But this is not your typical romance; rather, there are well-crafted characters, an exciting mystery and vividly-described locales, all set in the historical period surrounding the attack on Pearl Harbor. The main characters, Merrylei Wentworth and Jamison Sumida, are imbued with a deep sense of honor and family as well as, of course, a need to love and be loved. Ms. Wilding has created a compelling story in a beautiful literary style, and I look forward with great anticipation to her next novel!

I love historical romance! Especially when I can actually learn more about a place or time in history. I fell I did both with this book, as well as had a wonderful mystery and romance with characters that I really felt for.

As a whole, secular and religious works and or with strong religious undertones are clearly separated and isolated from each other. Yet authors such as C.S. Lewis and J.R. R. Tolkien have shown that it is indeed possible for works that are spiritual in nature or have Christian allegories and themes can thrive exceptionally well in both markets (Secular and Religious) along with being enjoyed by many different types of people regardless if they are atheists, Christian, or nondenominational. Whether Saving Elizabeth can thrive in a secular as well as a religious market will be discussed in the review.Elizabeth Bridges lost her faith in God after the death of her father and wants nothing to do with any spiritual or religious. Elizabeth's problems with her faith and coming to grips with the death of her father is very believable and something that many can relate to. The death of the love one is always tragic and sad but for Elizabeth, it turned her whole world upside down. She was taught to believe that God is good and loving yet she is frustrated with the fact that her father was taken away from her. Her prayers for her father to overcome cancer went unheard and Elizabeth blamed God for the death of her father.At the same time, the roles between the mother and daughter changed. Elizabeth for the longest time had to serve as a mother to her own mother who was an emotional wreck after her husband's death. Elizabeth is less than keen on moving away from her familiar places and faces but she doesn't say anything. Elizabeth's angst serves as the catalyst for the whole story. She meets a young boy named Riel-who is the gorgeous stranger from her dreams.Spoiler Alert! First of all, I loved the main villain, Lucifer. Nowadays, the Devil himself has been sissified, being turned into this Byronic character. Lauren Kate's Fallen series is one of the prime example where the Devil is watered down and utterly pathetic. If it is not that, the Devil is shown as being really over the top clichéd villain who just rambles on and on and on. But this is not the case in Saving Elizabeth.The depicting of Lucifer was spot on. He was the suave, charismatic trickster and master deceiver. Yet at the same time, he could instill fear in his minion's hearts and isn't afraid to unleash his powers, showing that he is not to be trifled with and poses as a serious legitimate threat to the main heroes in the story. Saving Elizabeth's version is fairly accurate to the entity in Christianity.Riel AKA the Archangel Gabriel actually sounds like and even behaves for the most part like an angel. A big problem is that young adult fiction has depicted angels-even fallen angels-having the maturity of a bratty teenager. But this isn't the case for Saving Elizabeth. The ending-which will not be revealed-was brilliantly executed. Earlier in this review, I would say whether or not can Saving Elizabeth thrive both in a secular and religious market.The answer would be yes. In recent years, stories with religious undertones and themes or ideas that drew inspiration from religion are becoming more mainstream and have a huge following behind them. The Ao No Exorcist (Blue Exorcist) manga which revolves around the fact that the main character who is the son of Satan along with demons and exorcist-being very popular in Japan as well as in the US and the U.K. El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron is a fantasy action video-game that is based off the Book of Enoch and other religious texts. El Shaddai is rather quirky but has a small but growing fan base behind it.Saving Elizabeth can do exceptionally well given the chance and with enough promotion. If you are looking for a great YA Christian paranormal romance, I'd recommend Saving Elizabeth.

I'd like to explain By Rita Before I write any further, I'd like to explain, from a librarian and writer's viewpoint, what the young adult genre of fiction really is. Many older adults shy away from the YA section in libraries and bookstores because they think the books are likely childish in the writing and subject matter. Not so.YA books are categorized as such because they leave out, for the most part, heavy sexual content, excessive language, over-the-top gore and violence, and other aspects that would garner an R or even X rating if they were made into movies. This doesn't mean that the plots and writing styles are watered down and sickingly sweet. On the contrary. Think of some books that made it on the big screen: The Fault in our Stars, The Hunger Games, The Lord of the Rings, etc. These are all listed as Young Adult books in our library card catalog.As for the books I am reviewing now, Fairy Tale Romance Collection, they each contain aspects of good quality writing. I asked my teenage daughter to read them along with me. She was fascinated with them and finished all five in a couple of weeks. She has asked if I could find her more!As for me, I love Melanie Dickerson's writing style and I applaud her for writing Christian romance that incorporates the princess theme within them. Young girls (and some of us older ones) will always be enthralled with the princess stories, hence the popularity of Disney and their continuing to reinvent the old princess yarns like Cinderella and Snow White. They just never get old.I think that, of the five stories by Dickerson, I like The Princess Spy the best. It is filled with a mysterious element that keeps me flipping the pages. The other titles are wonderful too. The Healer's Apprentice involves a mysterious woman who is hiding - from what? The Fairest Beauty reminds me a bit of Sleeping Beauty, probably because of the jealous stepmother and the lead character running away to escape her wrath. In The Captive Maiden, a ball is held by a boy (all grown up) who is now looking for a mate. Remind you a bit of Cinderella? It doesn't follow the traditional Cinderella theme, however. In The Merchant's Daughter, I had a more difficult time trying to find a parallel in the old princess stories, however, it finally clicked that this was a bit like Beauty and the Beast.Honestly, I loved them all.If you want to read good, clean books that are well written and will keep you reading and then asking for more, don't overlook the Fairy Tale Romance Collection by Melanie Dickerson. Then ask your librarian to find you more titles in the YA genre.*I received Fairy Tale Romance Collection in exchange for my honest review. My opinions are my own.*

By Stacey The Fairy Tale Romance Collection by Melanie Dickerson is a fabulous collection of stories based on popular fairy tales. All five stories are beautifully written and very engaging. They don’t obviously resemble the stories on which they are based, but it’s been a while since I’ve read a book that made me think. I highly recommend this collection for any age group!****Story #1, The Healer’s Apprentice, is a very different take on the tale of Sleeping Beauty. In fact, it took more than half the book for me to recognize echoes of the fairy tale. Rose is the apprentice of a healing woman who is in love with the future Duke. Lord Hamlin is also in love with Rose, but with his title comes a pre-arranged marriage. This beautifully written story will keep the reader captive until the final page!****Story #2, The Merchant’s Daughter, is Dickerson’s more obvious but just as creative version of Beauty and the Beast. Annabel has volunteered herself as an indentured servant to Lord Ranulf le Wyse to pay a debt her family owes and escape an unwanted marriage. In the midst of the challenges of life as a servant, Annabel’s heart’s desire is realized as she is able to read the Word of God for herself as she reads it to the lord of the manor.****Story #3, The Fairest Beauty, is an enjoyable twist on the story of Snow White. Sophie is the mistreated scullery maid thought to be the betrothed of Valten, Duke Wilhelm’s eldest son. When Valten’s brother, Gabe, learns that Sophie is in danger, he takes it upon himself to rescue the maid for his brother.****Story #4, The Captive Maiden, is Dickerson’s clever retelling of the Cinderella story. Gisela is the beloved daughter whose father dies, leaving her in the “care” of her stepmother. Valten plays the rescuing hero in this inspiring tale****Story #5, The Princess Spy, an engaging and inspiring version of The Frog Princess, is the story of Valten’s and Gabe’s sister, Margaretha. There are lots of surprises in this enjoyable story of finding love in the oddest of places.These beautiful, Christian based stories convey the spirit of the fairy tales woven with a thick, godly undercurrent. The story of “Sleeping Beauty” is retold in The Healer’s Apprentice. We are introduced to Rose Roemer. She is an apprentice under the watchful eye of her protector. Of course, you are familiar with the story and can guess the rest (;Next, in Melanie’s second book, The Merchants Daughter, we are introduced to Annabel as she must work for the the man that “has a beard and one of his arms is afflicted”. She finds herself inside the castle in the midst of a “Beauty and the Beast” retelling.In her third book, The Fairest Beauty, she begins to introduce characters we will see throughout the rest of her books. Sophie is a servant in her own father’s home because he has died and she is left with her evil stepmother. Nope! Not “Cinderella”! Not yet!! This is the retelling of “Snow White”.Now we have “Cinderella”!! In, The Captive Maiden, we find the story of Sophie and Valten. This, Valten, is the brother of Gabe (whom Sophie married in the last book!!)! I don’t need to tell you the details. You get the idea! It’s everyone’s favorite fairy tale!Lastly, The Princess Spy, is a retelling of “The Princess and the Frog”. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. gentle and quiet but nice By A Reader In the author's note at the end of this book, Jane Eagland writes, "I did not set out to write an accurate history, but to explore my version, my vision of Emile Bronte. As such, this is, appropriately I feel, a work of the imagination, and I apologize to any reader who is disappointed because my Emily is not theirs."I have to say that, for this reader at least -- and it should be noted here that I have a cat named Bronte, so I probably care more than most -- the apology is unnecessary. I liked her version of Emily very well, and in fact don't mind a bit that she has now taken residence in my imagination. The events in the book might not be completely factual or presented in the exact order they happened, but they feel true to me nonetheless.The story itself is gentle and quiet. It does go a bit slow, but that feels right here. There's no grand romance or exciting adventure -- as the title implies, this is more of an inward book. It's not going to grab a reader who doesn't care about the Bronte's, is my guess, unless it reaches a girl who will soon become a fan.The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because the intelligence of the actual Bronte sisters is so off the charts, it would be basically impossible to truly capture their true genius, without being a genius on that level yourself. The standards are so ridiculously high, in other words, that they are near impossible to meet. But anyone who is a Bronte fan who wants an intimate peek into the home lives of the sisters (and poor infuriating Branwell) will probably not be upset by this book. I feel like most attempts to recreate the Brontes (or Jane Austen) fall far shorter of the mark than this.

By Amazon Customer I so enjoyed this book and was captivated by the poignant tale of a formerly well-respected Russian family adapting to their poor and hard life in pre-war Paris, and more so because I knew that it was based closely on the author's own family. The narrative of Tatiana's romantic plight is beautifully told and becomes such a page-turner that I much look forward to a sequel. A must-read novel!

Strange things are out there in our world to be rediscovered. And sometimes... feared. Some of what we may come to find that's been lost... would have been better left buried and forgotten. Morgan discovers this firsthand. She finds out what's in the Hoia Baciu and that it's been freed, mistakenly, by her uncle. She has to save him and also prevent a powerful, malevolent, demon from being able to walk, at large, in our world. What she doesn't know is that the demon wants her to come and find her uncle. It is a great story that keeps you guessing. Each character is so well written, you can almost see them on the page. I am eagerly looking forward to more. I would highly recommend this author to anyone that loves a good story, interesting characters and likes to be pulled into a story from the first page.

Your very vivid descriptions of scene after scene made the reader feel as if he was there experiencing it alongside the characters. When it comes to the paranormal genre, the sign of a good writer is one who causes a reader’s heartbeat to quicken. Mine did!

By Christine Richardson Please be careful and don't read too much about this book and spoil the ending, as this ending is much too powerful and thought provoking to miss reading for yourself.In my opinion, its a book and story much more suited to today then when it was written, but than again Chesterton knew more of governments and secrete societies and who was really behind them (its not what you think - read the book and don't even try and guess), then I do. He was somewhat connected without being part of the establishment, often on the outs with it.So this book, about a plan to bring down governments, but focused on England, is about the government infiltration of a group of anarchists - but you could see it as international terrorists - its all the same. The point of the novel is who is behind such groups, who supports them, funds them and who are the people who make up the leadership and cadre...Fascinating! Really, really enjoyed it, brilliant!

By Felicity Barrington Like Kafka, and TV's The Prisoner (1960's), The Many Who was Thursday is a terrific read. Below this review is a spoiler, so don't read anything past this paragraph - I can tell you if you are wondering sometimes at what or who is behind the headlines - one can suspect that Chesterton had some interesting ideas about 'world wide conspiracy' and what or how was behind them. I feel lucky to have found this book, it was an unexpected joy, and will be read again.Warning: Spoiler Alert!!!In a surreal turn-of-the-century London, Gabriel Syme, a poet, is recruited to a secret anti-anarchist task-force at Scotland Yard. Lucian Gregory, an anarchist poet, is the only poet in Saffron Park, until he loses his temper in an argument over the purpose of poetry with Gabriel Syme, who takes the opposite view. After some time, the frustrated Gregory finds Syme and leads him to a local anarchist meeting-place to prove that he is a true anarchist. Instead of the anarchist Gregory getting elected, the officer Syme uses his wits and is elected as the local representative to the worldwide Central Council of Anarchists. The Council consists of seven men, each using the name of a day of the week as a code name; Syme is given the name of Thursday. In his efforts to thwart the council's intentions, however, he discovers that five of the other six members are also undercover detectives; each was just as mysteriously employed and assigned to defeat the Council of Days. They all soon find out that they are fighting each other and not real anarchists; such was the mastermind plan of the genius Sunday. In a dizzying and surreal conclusion, the six champions of order and former anarchist ring-leaders chase down the disturbing and whimsical Sunday, the man who calls himself "The Peace of God".

An Allegorical Nightmare By A Certain Bibliophile This review contains spoilers.This was originally published in 1908 when Chesterton, one of the greatest Christian apologists of the first third of the twentieth century, was still a Protestant. He wouldn't convert to Catholicism until the 1920s. Yet even as a Protestant, he had managed to do some wonderful writing, including "Orthodoxy," his classic defense of the inner workings of Christian faith. However, I found this book to be less successful. The characters were so obviously meant to be symbols of something above and beyond themselves that it comes across more as a fable (or, as the subtitle has it, a "nightmare") than a realist novel.The main struggle Chesterton presents - relentlessly forced down your throat until you almost can't bear it anymore - is that of anarchy versus order. Gabriel Syme (paladin of law and order) is a member of the Scotland Yard division that keeps an eye on political anarchists. He meets Gregory, an anarchist, at a party where they discuss what makes poetry poetic. Is it law, rationality, and reason - or disorder and anarchy? Syme suggests that Gregory is only a tongue-in-cheek anarchist, since he rightfully claims that total anarchy would never be able to accomplish its political goals. Gregory counters by offering to take Syme to an underground anarchist meeting to show him that they really do exist.The rest proceeds almost predictably: we find that one member after another of the anarchist council is also working undercover as a member for the Scotland Yard. In fact, of the seven members (each named after a day of the week), five of them are discovered to be police officers. The first time or two this is surprising; by the fifth time, I was almost rolling my eyes. By the end, we find out that not even the leader of the group, Sunday, is an anarchist. Instead, he too has been a force for good.In the end, everything comes off sounding like a paean to reason and rationality, but the message comes off as both heavy-handed and confused, as difficult as that is to imagine. Maybe it was the overt force of the message mixed with the phantasmagoric style on top of the need for Chesterton to turn absolutely into a symbol with some latent meaning. There were just too many things he was trying to do here, and none of them come off with any virtuosity.

The setting and the description of the medieval time absorbed me. The language in which the characters spoke helped to create an authentic world. Princess Serese was a feisty feminist heroine who continued to amaze me with her bravery, even when she made mistakes. Her love interest needed rescuing more than once. The faithful shepherd and the capricious king both wanted Princess Serese for themselves. The plot twists and turns and the cliff hangers throughout made me want to keep reading. This Fairy Tale reminded me on Harry Potter and The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. It's more than worth the price!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. But was I glad that I did By Geoff.Barnes. I read this book even though the subject wasn't my genre. But was I glad that I did. The story held me from start to finish. I wanted to know what happened on the next page. The characters were well introduced and described. The story moved along, it did not dwell for long in one place. The ending was a big surprise. My favorite character was Jonathon whose father played a significant part in this story. An excellent read.

Unimaginable twist of the supernatural and reality By P B Homan From the opening page, the reader is lead along a path where the supernatural and reality blend in a tale where the bizarre and believable and each chapter springs another unexpected surprise that keeps the pages turning.If the usual novel about the medlieval may ring untrue because its language is saddled with the vernacular of the present, here every turn of phrase seems to come from a writer living at that time. The dialogue rings true and the description of events so beautifully crafted transcends imagination usually by the present.Read and escape into a fantasy that will truly fly you away, while your are in this novel's gripping pages.
