By Roses are Amber Silence and Circumstance is mystery set around the eleven days in December 1926 that Agatha Christie mysteriously disappeared. Roy Dimond weaves a story around what could have happened in those eleven days when the world waited for answers. Told through the eyes of Charlotte Fisher, English governess to the Christie household, the tale begins with the arrival of a letter and a huge family row.The Christie's live in a house in Sunningdale, Berkshire. Agatha persuades "Carlo" as Charlotte is known, to travel to London on her behalf and attend an urgent meeting. When she returns home the household is empty and the police arrive to announce that Mrs Christie has gone missing.With the help of many, many famous characters from the world of literature and art they begin a quest to find a missing diary. Mixed with this is Carlo's introduction to various secret associations of modern artists and thinkers who are trying to bend the future of man towards enlightenment and insight. They warn of the dictators and tyrants of the world who wish to take over the free will of the people.The style of the writing is a meandering, twisting and turning of the reader's mind creating a great long mystery with its unravelling of clues and ultimate finale. I did have several issues with the language which hampered my enjoyment of the book, this was December 1926, England. I would have felt happier with handbags, not purses, gardens not yards, promenades not boardwalks, streets not blocks, streams not creeks, no Zebra crossings yet, it's too cold in December for nearly all butterflies. We take milk more commonly with our tea not cream. I question trains running at midnight from London and taking until late afternoon to reach Sunningdale only a short distance away and we always spell “gray” with an "e" in England.This review is based on a free copy of the book given to me by the author.

For anyone who loves the period between World Wars, and the great artists and writers of that period: this book is a real treat. The book speculates what happened during the 11 days that Agatha Christie went missing in 1926, and search that went on to find her.Charlotte Fisher, nanny to Agatha’s daughter and her friend, is the narrator of the book. In the novel, we are introduced to a collection of artistic royalty from the period all trying to solve riddle of Agatha’s disappearance. John Steinbeck, Arthur Conan Doyle, Dashiell Hammett, Ernest Hemingway, to name just a few, all join the search which spans all of Europe, and of course, involves a ride on the Orient Express.Charlotte’s voice seemed real and spot-on for the period, and we are pulled like her as innocents into Agatha’s disappearance and experience events as she does. We share her fear, astonishment, and confusion. We also get to see great authors and artists as people, not as the giants and cultural icons that they become later.This book was a journey, almost an amusement park theme ride featuring the figures and events of late 1920s. The looming threat of another war was something you could feel throughout the novel. along with the desperation and urgency of the people trying to do something to stop it.“Silence and Circumstance” will not disappoint anyone who loves this period in history, and also loves a good mystery. It is one of the best books I have read this year.

A funny collection filled with dark comic humour By Cearuil Swords Hands down the first two stories and the boy who turned into a boat were the most enjoyable to me. They don't miss a beat. They are funny and wicked. I enjoyed many of the other stories, in fact all of them had merit and a weirdness I liked, I just felt that some lines were over stretched or the pacing was a little off. Maybe it has something to do with how I hear them in my head. Even so there was some lovely, wry verses scattered throughout. The collection reminds me of Roald Dahl's stories and that isn't a half bad similarity to have going for your work.Poetry is to be spoken out loud and it would be nice to hear how the author intended the collection to be heard or at least their interpretation (I wouldn't want it said that I tried to clip anyone's wings). So we must have an audio version to accompany the book because you don't want to miss the illustrations! They fit the mood and twisted nature of the collection and add an extra layer of amusement. The writing and drawing combine to make a fine book with lots to recommend.

By Mark Kasniak Absolutely loved "The Troubles of Magnet Boy anthology of poems!" This is a fantastically weird collection that anyone can enjoy, children through adults. All the poems were clever and well thought out. My favorite part of the collections was the illustrations that went along with each page, they were top-notch and humorous. The drawings really brought the work to life and I can see them being especially helpful in capturing the interest of any children whom may read these poems. Some of the pieces were sad, some funny, some were about overcoming adversity and never giving up, but almost all had a lesson or message behind them. My personal favorites were "The Curiously Named Evil Doctor Strange" and "Little Zombie Susan" Highly recommend this collection for any fan of poetry or anybody in general whom is looking for a fun read of high-caliber literary fiction. A++

The poetry is well done, everything flows and the stories are very clearly understood despite their wonderfully bizarre nature. You really do not have a clue what is going to happen in these poems until the ending. Very creative and different from anything I've read so far. The layout is very episodic in nature and fun to read. On the surface they seem like children's poems but I think they are a bit too mature for kids. I believe young adults and beyond will be able to appreciate them and understand the underlying meanings without issue. Definitely a must read!

As an obsessive list maker I was delighted to find that this book is written entirely in lists spanning several days of this man's life. It is full of angst, learning about himself, and learning more about the environment that holds his wants and desires.I find the list writing to be brilliant and moving, a real testament about how we all probably use too many words and complicate issues that can be rather black and white when we get to their core. If we think back to childhood and basic needs it looks a lot like a list. Eat, Sleep, Cuddle. Back to basis for this lad and a win of a book for the author.

A Fresh, Unique, And Way Cool Book By Wilhelmina Zeitgeist "Me Being Me Is Exactly as Insane as You Being You" by Todd Hasak-Lowy may be pegged as being in the Young Adult genre but, believe me it is perfect for so many more than that age group. I'm pushing 60 and was delighted with the fresh and unique approach Hasak-Lowy took with this book.It's a story told in lists. I wasn't sure what to expect and it was a total surprise! In a good way surprise! I couldn't put this book down. I was fascinated with the format and the characters. I refuse to say anything more about the book except you will love it. If you see any reviews with a Spoiler Alert, look away and never look back. Trust me, you want to know nothing before you read it.This book is fresh, unique, and way cool. It's a book appropriate for teens grade 10 and seniors130+ should they live so long.

It's an intriguing idea: a novel in lists!I was not disappointed.The list format may be a gimmick, but is so skillfully used that I sank into the story instead of thinking, "Oh cool; I'm reading lists!" The lists range from revealing teenage boy humor to numbing heartbreak:Fictional Creatures Nate Sounds like While Puking:1. Chewbacca2. Frankenstein3. The HulkStorefronts Darren Walks Past until He Can No Longer Hear Them:1. Byron's Liquor2. Suds Coin Laundromat3. Saturn Cafe4. Fifth Third BankAnd I loved Darren. I cheered for him, felt so sorry for him, and genuinely wanted the happiest possible ending for him.Note: this book contains obscenities and multiple references to drug and alcohol use. This doesn't diminish the book at all for me, but may be a point to consider if you plan on gifting this book or using it in a classroom.

Good Reading By LAS Reviewer The past can be hidden, but it can never truly be forgotten.I ended up reading all ninety-two pages in a single day because I was so curious to see what would happen to this protagonist next. The pacing was so strong that there wasn’t ever a good place to stop and take a break from the plot. Every scene lead to one that was even more adventurous! I simply had to know how it all ended for Mount and his friends.At times I had trouble keeping track of all of the characters. There were more of them than I would typically expect to see in a short story, and there simply wasn’t enough time to get to know all of them as well as I would have preferred to do so. While I liked all of the characters, I would have given this work a much higher rating if I’d been able to get to know a smaller number of them better.By far the most interesting scenes for me were the ones that showed what Mount knew about healing the human body. He’d never had any kind of formal medical training as far as I could tell, yet he seemed to have a lot of tricks up his sleeve when he needed to act quickly. I was absolutely fascinated by everything he knew about how bodies work.I should note that this is the second tale in a series. I haven’t read the first one yet but had absolutely no problem understanding what was going on. They can be read out of order, although I’m now quite curious to see what I missed in book one!Mount II: The Next Adventure is a good choice for anyone who likes westerns.originally posted at long and short reviews

About the Author

Brian Harvey is a scientist and writer. He holds a PhD in marine biology and specializes in conservation of aquatic biodiversity. Brian’s first nonfiction book for a general audience, The End of the River, was published in 2008. He is currently finishing a second nonfiction book about sailing around Vancouver Island and is working on several fiction projects. Brian lives in Nanaimo, British Columbia.

It's length doesn't detract from the pleasure of reading it, however, you just get the enjoyment in a quick little bite.This is the second book from this line that I've gotten so I looked at the publisher's website and it says this line was developed for adult ESL students, reluctant readers and adults who struggle with literacy. I really like that! I think this is the perfect kind of book to get an adult with literacy issues interested in reading. While the language may not be challenging, the plot line and characterizations would not be insulting to adult learners. I think there's a real place in the book world for this idea. Anything that gets more adults reading is a good idea to me.Frank Ryan, a piano tuner by day and a jazz pianist by night, is working for one of his favorite elderly clients when instead of paying him in cash she pays him with an old manuscript. It's not what he wants but there seems to be no choice so he takes and it and, surprise! It's Beethoven's lost Tenth Symphony. Obviously other people are going to want this thing and come after Frank with a vengeance. This world of crime and violence is not what he's use to but he manages it pretty well and I found it pretty entertaining. Frank is a really fun character with an interesting personality, fun and engaging. I would have given it 4 stars but the ending was a bit predictable for me so I gave it 3 1/2.This would take about an hour to read if you were uninterrupted and my first thought, before I knew why this line was written this way, was "Why would I want to read such a short book?" I like books I can lose myself in for hours and days. But I've decided what a really good use for this type of book would be. I'm going to put it on the night stand in my guest room. All my guests are readers and they all love a good mystery. This would be the perfect thing to read if you found yourself somewhere and forgotten to bring a book or had finished what you brought. It's light, it's quick, it's entertaining and I would be quite willing to read more about Frank Ryan.I received this book through LibraryThing's Early Reviewer program in exchange for an honest review.

Entertaining By Toni Osborne Book 1This is a “ Rapid Reads” , a paperback of 139 pages in huge characters, one everyone could easily zipped through in no time. This book is excellent for readers with short attention spans and for young adult who like a fast paced mystery.This smart page-turner is well-written with no fuss and no extra words to bog down the flow. It has all good elements wrapped in few words: a piano technician as hero, a mystery around a manuscript of Beethoven’s first three movements of The Tenth Symphony and the required twist to throw us a curve at the end and pique our interest to pursue with this series.This is an entertaining quick read I am Happy to have received throw LibraryThing’s Reviewer program.·

About the Author James Fenimore Cooper was a nineteenth-century American author and political critic. Esteemed by many for his Romantic style, Cooper became popular for his depiction of Native Americans in fiction. Before Cooper considered himself a writer, he was expelled from Yale University, served as a midshipman for the United States Navy, and became a gentleman farmer. Cooper wrote many notable works including The Pioneers, The Last of the Mohicans, and The Red Rover, which was adapted and performed on stage in 1828. Cooper passed away in 1851 at the age of 61.

Patrick Killough One promotional review of Fenimore Cooper's 1843 book NED MYERS calls it both "engrossing biography of Ned Myers, a sailor and Cooper's companion at sea" as well as "this nautical novel." NED MYERS is, however, simply biography. It is not a novel. It is not a work of fiction. Admittedly, NED MYERS does display recurring elements of Cooper's 32 novels. These include chases, captures, escapes, storms and even a bit of romance. Other features found in some Cooper novels include encounters with pirates, struggles of conscience against drink, growth in personal religion and a handful of speculations on politics and morals. But all these elements were historical fact: part of the life story of one "Edward Robert Meyers" (Ch. I), born in Quebec c. 1793.In 1806-7 Meyers, who had changed his German name to Myers after slipping off as a lad to New York, shipped out on the merchantman the Sterling as a cabin boy on a trading voyage to England and back. Also aboard, but not lodging "before the mast" with the common seaman, was 16-year old James Cooper, the future novelist, historian and biographer who would add "Fenimore" to his name. The two boys became friends, and took in the sights of England together. They then went their separate ways for decades, as sailors do. In late 1842 Ned took the initiative to reconnect with his old shipmate. And they then spent five months at Cooper's home in Cooperstown, New York, putting together the manuscript of NED MYERS.This is a perfect little book, modest in its goals, sure in execution. Author Cooper assumes the persona of his subject and collaborator (they shared sales royalties later). He writes short, punchy sentences unlike the often contorted, clumsy ramblings of THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS or THE DEERSLAYER. Myers is made to tell his tale chronologically and there is something in it for every reader: was a royal prince Ned's godfather? How many ships did Ned sail on? Answer: at least 72 and closer to a hundred by another reckoning, which includes his transports while a British prisoner of war after capture on Lake Ontario in 1813. Ned spent most of his years sailing with the private merchant marine but also did three stints with the U.S. Navy. He learned Bengalee in Calcutta, traded opium from India for metals in Canton, China. He knew the Mediterranean, Antarctic waters, crused off South Carolina during the "nullification" threats and saw action in Florida during the Seminole War.One thing that strikes me in this biography is the economics of being a simple sailor. Ned told his story as a lesson to sailors everywhere on evils to avoid and good things to do. One lesson was that a sailor could easily save $100/year above his expenses for clothes, food and modest entertainment. And that, unless squandered, would be enough when added to down the decades to assure a comfortable old age in retirement. Often enough, Ned would leave behind a fairly tidy sum with a trustworthy landlord before shipping out again. But normally he would return to his home base (usually New York City) and within a month or two have blown his savings on giving parties and carousing. He early gave in to excessive drinking.Let me conclude this review with a passage underlining Ned's prevailing poverty between voyages. It also shows the laconic narrative style Cooper displayed in this biography. During an otherwise pleasant voyage to the Caribbean, Ned Myers's passenger-carrying merchantman the Belle Savage was struck by a storm a day's sail south of Bermuda, took on water and sank. Lifeboats were successfully launched. And a nearby brig the Mary picked up all survivors.Six days later, Ned and others were unloaded in New York City"at no great distance from Fulton Market. When my foot touched the wharf, my whole estate was under my hat, and my pockets were as empty as a vessel with a swept hold. ... I began to think I was born to bad luck, and being almost naked, was in nowise particular what became of me. ... but at no period of my life did I run in debt" (Ch. XII).-OOO-

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. as best as Ned could remember By James Gillies This format is a booklet and tough to read due to very small print so bought it for a Kindle...story follows much of the life of Ned. in the late 1700s to 1850 approx..almost on a daily basis.Mr. Cooper has written the book from Ned's memories...as best as Ned could remember.

Fresh and inviting setting, but disappointing character development By Outtrip Gal Animal magic, the ancients vs humanity, and things are not what they seem. The stage is set for an epic fairy tale, and maybe if I hadn't jumped in on this, book #2 in the series, the back story would have filled in more of the holes. As it was, the characters felt flat, the animal magic never quite inspired and the epic battle felt a little predictable. I'd love to see more multi-dimensional characters and a few more twists and surprises in the next book, because the premise felt fresh and inviting.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It's OK By Reader2 I somehow missed the fact that this was book 5 of the 'Princess and Hound' series. I floundered a bit in the beginning trying to figure out exactly what was going on. (There wasn't any back story explaining that humans could change into animals and vise versa.) The story had a lot of potential, but for me it fell short of what I'd hoped for. It's a rather long story and I felt like it dragged a bit in places. Before I got to the end, I had a pretty good idea how it would end. It's not a bad book, it just wasn't quite as good as I think it could have been.

By RaGoddess I would recommend still reading the main novels one and two in the series before reading these novellas, but you MUST read these after reading books one and two. With that stated, I was really blown away how enraptured I became in reading about Celaena's past adventures. I thought since I knew how things would end for her that I really wouldn't be able to get too into these novellas and would feel forced to hold myself at a distance so I didn't get too close to any one of the characters knowing what I knew. I was very wrong and I fell in deep as I began to read. I will admit at times I thought Celaena could be a bit of an immature, selfish and very naive girl for growing up as an assassin like she did, but I think that really was just a bit of the growth you needed to see in her life to better understand the woman she became. These novellas did solve some of the mysteries of her past that were left lingering within the the novels. I would recommend getting the novellas as a bundle as it made it slightly cheaper and you got the feel of it being more of a novel than novella. No cliffhangers but you will want her next adventure right after finishing the first novella. Overall very impressive and well worth every cent spent. Highly recommend this author for a greatly weaved suspenseful fantasy with an outstanding female heroine.

When I was a little girl, my parents once asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. Without hesitation, I smiled and said "An assassin!". Which was met with much silence and wide-eyed stares. As an adult, naturally I gravitate towards books with a strong heroine with kick ass killing abilities. I love the main character and I can't get enough of these novellas. I have read each and every single one the day they are released. It's great to have the novellas in this collection. You would be a fool to not read this book! Take the time to step into this amazing world that Sarah J. Maas has created and lose yourself to a world of intrigue and skill!

It all starts from a simple mission which Celaena Sardothien chooses to disobey, leading into her entire livery being crushed before her very eyes and into the bitter, jaded assassin that we know today.The five novellas each cover separate missions: one, to rescue thousands of slaves from a Pirate Lord, to teach a healer how to defend herself, to learn from the Mute Master of Assassin's in the desert, to help fight slavery from an evil crime lord and lastly, the assassination that was never going to pan out. In the first story, we see Celaena rescue thousands of slaves from a Pirate Lord, which sets the tone for the rest of the novellas. Celaena's past is one I couldn't tear my eyes from, as the events all lead up to her inevitable imprisonment in Endovier.In The Assassin's Blade, we see what shapes Celaena into the person she is today, with her love of finery, cocky confidence, intelligence and mastery of assassination present here. Her master and mentor, Arobynn has taken her in as his protégé and like a cult leader, she doesn't question his decisions. As the King of Assassins, he's given his group board, missions and even gifts in exchange to do his dirty work.One in his position of power cannot be infallible however, as his anger towards Celaena and Sam are enacted throughout the novel. With multiple layers of deceit and trickery, Arobynn's cruelty knows no end as he toys with Celaena and Sam with his influence and missions.Celaena is certainly a kick ass character and we are given some background as to why she holds herself to high standards and morals. Pampered and entitled as Arobynn's favourite, she has high regard for herself and her master, and she lets everyone know it. She even treats Sam as a competitor ready to swoop into her title, but slowly warms to him across the course of the novel. With all of her morals and penchant to do the right thing, we wonder why she's in her chosen career. The Assassin's Blade demonstrates to us that her love of finery and skill actually allows her to right wrongs against slavery and evil by dispatching the toughest enemies.The romance with Sam is slowly developed over the course of the novel, and we see her slowly regard him as a competitor, to companion, to someone who she truly cares for and loves. With his never ending devotion to Celaena, his honour and power protecting her throughout, he holds on his own against Chaol and Dorian. Having grown up with her, he really does know her the best out of all them. Sam just feels totally right for her, which reinforces my belief that there is no The One out there for us. There are several people who could become them, each with their different things to offer us.The Assassin's Blade is a compelling, in-depth prequel filled with fantasy, romance, action and deceit that fleshes out Celaena's background as Adarlan's Assassin. The author has taken her time to illustrate to us Celaena's relationship with her mentor, her moral high ground, and the protectiveness that her and Sam share. This is a MUST READ for any fans of the series and even as an introduction to the novel. I couldn't put it down, and it's the perfect filler until Reign of Fire is released.

As soon as I heard about My Best Everything, I thought it'd be for me. Appalachians, moonshine, and a romance? Yes, please! But My Best Everything quickly became a letdown for me. My biggest complaint with this one is that it seemed so damn long. It became such a chore to finish this book. I felt like I'd read for an hour and only get through 5% of it on my Kindle. For me, the writing style is what slowed this book down. It's written as a letter from the main character, Lulu, to the love interest, Mason. For the first few chapters, it was quirky and cute. I liked it. But after 15% of the awkward writing, I was completely over it. It would have been better to post a paragraph or two in letter form at the beginning of the chapters or something. Anything but the way it was written would be an improvement. Aside from my issues with the writing style, I did find myself enjoying parts of My Best Everything. As a fellow Appalachian small town girl, I understood where Lulu was coming from and her need to spread her wings. There was a connection between us because of that. But what I couldn't understand were her decisions. Lulu was able to plot up a devious and lucrative plan to rake in money illegally. But she lacked so much common sense. I know it sounds like I disliked this book so much. But I really didn't; I promise! My hopes were just a bit too high, I think. Teenagers will enjoy My Best Everything. It's got a slow burn romance that I enjoyed, a bit of finding yourself through illegal means, and the bittersweet feeling of being on the brink of adulthood. Overall, My Best Everything was an enjoyable read. I just wish that a more complete story had been told without the letter!**I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review with no compensation.

MESMERIZED...Many reviewers have commented on the style (the story is told as if Lulu is writing a letter to Mason). For me, it worked brilliantly. Because it was an amazingly unique departure from any other YA book I've read. Plus, I was DYING to know how the letter would end!!! (PS: not spoiling, but it's amazing!)As for the romance, I fell hard and fast for Lulu and Mason. I just adored the way their flaws made them perfectly perfect for one another. From Lulu's desperation to break free of her small Appalachian town, to Mason's moonshine ties that shackle him there. The characters felt so fully drawn and real to me. They were easy to love despite moments of: OMG! NO, DON'T DO THAT! Yep, I know a book has me in its clutches when I find myself screaming at it.And can we talk about the writing? Glorious!!! The narrative is beautiful, authentically teen, and has that lyrical quality I find captivating. I actually had moments where I stopped just to savor the words. (no, really. i did.)Simply put, I LOVED everything about MY BEST EVERYTHING! Sarah Tomp's debut is a stunning snapshot of what it is to be on the brink of adulthood--to be fearless and fearful. The temptation even comes up to skip the review, and just rate it; that would be easier. But when a book is as good as Tessa Gratton's last entry into her United States of Asgard series, you just have to let people know about it.Set in an alternative (way cooler) world where Odin and Thor steer national policy, The United States of Asgard series has a ton of awesome going for it. Creatively interwoven into our own world, the reader is able to escape to a much more magical place, a place where you could not only get a good job or get to serve your country, you might even get the honor of being born a Berserker or earn your way into becoming a Valkyrie. You could get to meet Baldur the beautiful, or be able to help others by seething the direction their lives are heading. All of these things are fantastic, fun and enamoring. But you hardly notice them, because they are just a setting for the complex and incredibly well written characters.. You will KNOW Tessa's characters . You will be annoyed by them, you will be mad at them, you will be ashamed at and for them. But most of all, you will love them, because they are all real, and full and oh so human.The Apple Throne is this idea nearly to perfection - we get to know imperfect characters, and get to love them because of their imperfections. Perhaps best of all, we get to see how we can love others because of the power of her characters and how powerfully they can care for others, even when everything says they should not, they should be full of anger. I don't feel like I can even iterate how powerfully Tessa pulls this off; let's just leave it at, some of her characters leave me wanting to be a better person, and the bookworm/daydreamer in me just wishes the characters were real so I could actually get to know them.In a year of amazing books, this is one of my favorites. Do yourself a favor and read it.

A Masterclass in How It's Done By Kate Johnston Is it hyperbolic to open by declaring that THE UNITED STATES OF ASGARD might be the best books I've ever read? I don't care: they are, and THE APPLE THRONE continues this tradition with more style and grace than I would have thought possible.I think my favourite part about it was that the book dealt majorly with characters I didn't think I would ever get to see again. Gratton took the people I met (and loved) in GOLD RUNNER and wove them in with Astrid and Soren and Signy, and I really could not be more pleased about it. Every thread - from the books, the novellas, the online pretend magazines - was tied, however small it was, and it was FREAKING DELIGHTFUL.I also rather desperately loved Astrid's refusal to just be. She basically got her heart's desire (ish) at the end of THE LOST SUN, but she didn't let her destiny be her ending, and I liked that a lot. Also, she got to rescue Soren (twice!), and that is pretty great.And Signy. And Amon. And Su(uuuuuuuuuuuuuuu)ne. My heart.What will forever be the cornerstone of these books, for me at least, is the world building. Gratton has left nothing aside, and yet somehow there is never the worry that the reader will be crushed by all the details. It's just so effing real. It is the smartest thing I've ever read, which I think is why it's also the best, and the world is a big part of that. What THE APPLE THRONE says about girls and monsters (and some who are both), and inclusion and second chances and love and death and chance and fate is amazing.I look forward to rereading this series for the rest of my life, and I am SO GLAD I got to read this book.

I fell and fell hard for the story (and the audiobook version!) The Strange Maid deepened my love for the series. Reading The Apple Throne was so bittersweet. I absolutely loved it. However, I am not ready to leave the United States of Asgard yet! (I guess I had better savor the short stories in The Weight of Stars!!)With The Apple Throne the focus returns to one of the main characters from The Lost Sun – Astrid Glyn. I loved Astrid and hated leaving her at the end of book one. We see her briefly in book two but I was excited to learn more about her new life as Lady of the Apples. She’s no longer a regular girl but she’s not quite a goddess either. Watching her find her place in the world was so interesting!And of course there’s a quest. This one involves Soren! Astrid and Soren’s love for one another shines through the pages of these stories. I loved seeing Astrid take charge and do what had to be done to find Soren and help him right what was wrong.I’m trying to avoid spoilers here but it’s hard! I want to talk all about all the things!!! If you haven’t checked out The United States of Asgard books yet you really should! Such an excellent combination of mythology and the modern world!!

Hopefully I've already gotten you to read it (if not, no time like the present!).But why am I talking about Gae Polisner's first book in a review of her second? Because as much as I loved The Pull of Gravity, this book is even better.Francesca blames herself for her brother Simon's death. She was supposed to be watching him the day he drowns, and ever since, her family has completely splintered. Everyone fell apart and they did so in different directions.And when she meets a little boy, Frankie Sky, and becomes his babysitter, her life turns around. She won't tell anyone because she knows how ridiculous it sounds but she thinks that maybe Frankie Sky has a little bit of her brother's soul. The more she researches reincarnation, the more possible it seems.But as interesting as that is, it isn't the point of the story.The point is how Francesca (or Beans, as she is known to her family, best friend and beloved Frankie Sky) learns how to stop blaming herself for what happened to her brother, as well as the relationship she forges with Frankie Sky. And oh, how I love Frankie Sky. That little boy is pure magic and every scene with him was an absolute delight.This entire book was an absolute delight.I cannot possibly say enough good things about this book, so I will just say this: buy it now. Buy it from Amazon or Barnes & Noble or whatever bookstore you frequent. Buy a copy for a friend, so you have someone to discuss it with. (Or talk about it with me; I'd love that.) This makes an excellent present, as well. Do with that information as you will.Highly, highly recommended.

Her father seems to be hiding something, her mother can't look her in the eye, her best friend is dating the boy of her dreams and worst of all, she hates herself as she feels she's to blame for her brother's death.While trailing her father trying to get to the bottom of his odd behavior, Francesca happens to meet Frankie Sky, a boy who bears an eerie resemblance to her dead brother. But it's more than that, there are also inexplicable coincidences that lead Beans to believe her brother's soul might be living in Frankie Sky.Gae Polisner's prose is like poetry. It reads as if every word of every sentence is handpicked with precision creating a perfect flow like ocean waves. This book was so evocative, I smiled, I cheered, I cried. Francesca's story is haunting, yet hopeful and every time a new twist of fate occurred, my heart stopped, waiting to see what it might mean. I loved learning about Saint Florian, Christmas Island crabs, and sand dollars. I loved seeing how throughout the book Francesca grew stronger and further away from that place in her past, and closer to letting go.I fell in love with the characters in this book. So many readers will be able to relate to those characters with that air of sadness about them -- when you feel so heavy inside, like you're drowning, but have to continue to move and stay afloat on the outside -- the Schnell's, Mrs. Schyler, Mrs. Merrill. Lisette is a perfect best friend, and lovely, and I love that she doesn't act like she's beautiful even though she clearly is. I adore Bradley's, quirkiness and even Peter's peculiarity.Then there is Frankie Sky. Gae has written him so well...I picture him in my head perfectly. His voice is adorable and I'm sure will stick with me for a long time. I wonder if Gae spent a lot of time around 4 year olds while writing this because it seems so spot on. And I love his spirit, the spirit of a young boy, full of energy and adventure who believes himself invincible.I read Gae's first book, The Pull of Gravity, and her writing is even better than before (and it was beautiful before) -- This story even more beautiful and heartfelt. If this is what we should expect from Ms. Polisner in the future, I'm in.This book will resonate with me for weeks, I can tell. It will make me take a closer look at the world, at chance occurrences, coincidences and karma. I try not to live in the past and to live life profoundly and passionately like Frankie Sky, but sometimes I still need reminders, as I'm sure we all do, and this book as given me one.Do yourself a favor and buy this book. You won't regret it.

Thompson Summer of Letting Go has been one of my favorite reads of the year. More than anything, I appreciate the voice of this character and the way the story surprises at every turn, while feeling absolutely authentic. Francesca is an engaging, clever girl with close friends, yet is lost over the blame she feels over her brother's drowning while she built castles with him at the beach. How could you not feel to blame? Her best friend keeps reaching out to her -- but how can anyone understand how it feels to feel completely isolated from your mother (who has thrown herself into turning her brother's death into a cause) or her sweet but misdirected father, who she can't help worry is having an affair? Just at the point she feels at the crosshairs of wrong choices (falling for her best friend' boyfriend and breaking into the local country club to sleuth after her father) *someone* picks her out to be summer nanny for precocious toddler Frankie. Is it a cruel trick of nature or something more that has this little boy bearing such an uncanny resemblance to the beloved little brother she lost? Francesca is probably one of favorite teen voices, as she wrestles with questions of love, right and wrong, guilt and even the afterlife. She stands out as a humble heroine at a time when we could all use more strong and authentic female leads. Highly recommended as a gift, and recommended to readers 7th grade and up.
