"But you're goin' to join him, and you'll take me with you, won't you, Drew?" The lightness was gone from the older boy's eyes, his mouth set in controlled anger. "I am not goin' to do anything of the kind, Boyd Barrett." He spoke the words slowly, in an even tone, with a fraction of pause between each. Men of the command had once or twice heard young Rennie speak that way. Although difficult to know well, he had the general reputation of being easy to[...]".

I first read it as a young adult when it was first published and in my local library. Ms. Nortons's expert descriptions of the horrows of war--especially civil war--are still haunting. Her characters come alive! I feel I know them. The sequel to "Ride Pround,Rebel", "Rebel Spurs" is just as good and complements the first. Enjoy!

Snow Although now a senior citizen I still remember enjoying Andre Norton's early science fiction as a boy. I was therefore intrigued when I saw that the author's Ride Proud, Rebel! and its sequel Rebel Spurs were available free through Amazon.com. I couldn't have been more pleased at deciding to read these two books, which constitute a single coming-of-age story.A warning to those expecting Norton’s more usual offerings: There is no science fiction or fantasy in Ride Proud, Rebel! or in Rebel Spurs. The first book is a Civil War story, the second a Western, with the two linked by the main character, a young Kentuckian and horse-lover.Ride Proud, Rebel! follows the main character’s career as a Confederate scout as the Southern cause becomes more and more desperate. This is not a book that dwells on major battles but rather on the grim grind of war for ordinary soldiers, here portrayed not as fighting for some grand cause but for personal reasons, as is the case for the hero of the story who is estranged, with good reason, from his pro-Union grandfather. Not a story that waxes sentimental about the Lost Cause, one of the book's most memorable passages describes how foraging by Confederate forces out of military necessity becomes thievery and indiscriminate looting from civilians with no regard as to whether they are pro-Confederate or pro-Union. Dogged by hunger, exhaustion, and lack of all sorts of supplies, dwindling numbers of Confederate soldiers are portrayed as fighting well beyond any hope of victory. As the main character is a mounted scout, the important role played by horses and mules, and their suffering, is portrayed with care and sensitivity. For those of us with Confederate ancestors or others not minding a Civil War story told from a Southern perspective, this tale of friendship, loyalty, courage, and perseverance is well worth reading.
