Regarded by many as the most luminous example of Twain's work, this historical novel chronicles the French heroine's life, as purportedly told by her longtime friend — Sieur Louis de Conté. A panorama of stirring scenes recount Joan's childhood in Domremy, the story of her voices, the fight for Orleans, the splendid march to Rheims, and much more. An amazing record that disclosed Twain's unrestrained admiration for Joan's nobility of character, the book is matchless in its workmanship — one of Twain's lesser-known novels that will charm and delightfully surprise his admirers and devotees.

Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc, by Mark Twain

Review Joan of Arc is the lone example that history affords of an actual, real embodiment of all the virtues demonstrated by Huck and Jim and of all that Twain felt to be noble in man, Joan is the ideal toward which mankind strives. Twain had to tell her story because she is the sole concrete argument against the pessimistic doctrines of his deterministic philosophy. ---Robert Wiggins, Author, Mark Twain: Jackleg Novelist"I like Joan of Arc best of all my books; and it is the best; I know it perfectly well. And besides, it furnished me seven times the pleasure afforded me by any of the others; twelve years of preparation, and two years of writing. The others needed no preparation and got none." ----Mark TwainMark Twain comes furtively like Nicodemus at night with this tribute to one of God's saints. In doing so he tells a secret about himself. It is as though the man in a white suit and a cloud of cigar smoke thought there just might be a place where people in white robes stand in clouds of incense. ----Fr. George Rutler, Author, The Cure d'Ars Today

From the Publisher 14 1.5-hour cassettes

From the Back Cover Twin's serious, impassioned, meticulously researched story about a compelling heroine, the Maid of Orleans. This is Twain's celebration of the ideal woman: gentle, selfless, and pure, but also brave, courageous, and eloquent.

By Margaret Fiore I read Twain's Joan of Arc simply because it was included in a collection with 2 of my perennial favorites: The Prince and the Pauper, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. I loved Joan of Arc also. But it is a very different cup of tea.Nowhere else does Mark Twain rein in his irreverent spirit as in this work! He allows his sense of humor to emerge only in the stories of Joan's peripheral friends and fellow villagers (the Paladin, most notably, and even the narrator in the story of the love poem.) The sense of the author's genuine respect and admiration for his amazing heroine permeates the book. The story of Joan of Arc, always a moving tale, takes on greater weight when a man like Mark Twain - a worldly, cultured, highly intelligent, and totally irreverent man - not only gives 12 years of grueling research to it, but then produces a book that is so unequivocally respectful and devoted.Such a picture he draws! THIS is a character to excite anyone's admiration, and to inspire us all to give our best selves. And throughout the tale, while one recognizes that it is indeed a "story", it rings convincingly true. No matter what construction a religious or non-religious reader may put on the happenings of Joan of Arc's story, it is still a story of an enduringly noble character and amazing intellect. A woman who stood - and still stands - above the remainder of her species. This is an inspiring and uplifting piece of work.

Before we began I thought the 452 pages would be a bit daunting but by the time we finished we wished the book was longer. This was an incredible story told by a wonderful storyteller. The characters became more than just names in a history book. We now have an in-depth understanding of the time period, the politics, and the corruption of the Church. This book by Mark Twain, which took him two years to write and involved twelve years of research, is written in the voice of Joan's page and secretary, the Sieur Louis de Conte. De Conte knew Joan as a child and was the one person who was with her through everything up until the fatal end. The book is divided into three sections. The first section details Joan's life as a village peasant when her Voices came to her directing her to take up her mission to rid France of the English, and crown Charles VII the king. In the second section, Joan's military campaign is described and explored. Militarily speaking, it was a triumph. After all, she was the only person in all of history to hold the supreme command of a nation's armies at the age of seventeen. And she was a girl for goodnes sake! It was unheard of at the time and would still be remarkable today. The third section deals with Joan's trial for witchcraft where her strength of character is especially evident. To the end, she claimed her Voices came from God not from Satan as charged. She was unwavering on this point up until she was burned at the stake. Her trial was a sham designed to further the interests of the infamous French bishop, Pierre Cauchon of Beauvais. She died a martyr's death while her beloved France and her King looked on doing nothing to save her. This book was particularly impacting for my daughter as it dealt with a young girl who was remarkable for her character, her religious devotion and her strength. It was a special experience to share it together as a read aloud and I would recommend it highly to anyone looking to further their understanding of a remarkable young girl who changed the course of history.

A great book about an extraordinary person By Robert W Hazlett A master storyteller tells the tale of one of the most remarkable persons in known history. How a young, illiterate farm girl became commander-in-chief of France's armed forces at the age of 17; leading her army, which had become accustomed to defeat, to victory after victory, putting a reluctant king on his thrown and in the process, for a brief time, becoming the living embodiment of France to its people. It is a story of Joan's courage, intelligence and most of all her unswerving faith in her destiny and in her God, and how in the last year of her brief life she stood totally alone against her persecutors, whose sole objective was to have her die by fire.Twain's admiration for her shines through every page, and the more I learn about Joan of Arc, the more I share his admiration. This is a great book, and a must read for anyone interested in Joan of Arc.

Classic Crime Press presents you The Teeth of the Tiger in a fantastic ebook edition. Another action-packed mystery by Maurice LeBlanc! This story has to do with the final Will of a man named Mornington, who, in the year 1900, left behind the sum of $400 million francs. Of that, three-fourths went to his adopted country - which left $100 million francs to be distributed to his heirs. The executor of the estate was Mornington’s friend, Don Luis Perenna (AKA Arsene Lupin). The problem, however, was that no one knew where (or even who) some of the heirs were. If no heirs were to be found within 3 months, the entire $100 million francs would go to Perenna. And Perenna/Lupin had a reputation as being something of a rogue. It is definitely a race against time, as the heirs seem to be turning up dead at an alarming rate.

Lupin versus The Tiger By Karen Amrhein Arsene Lupin (as Don Luis Perenna) is out to solve a series of murders -- and prevent another -- in "The Teeth of the Tiger". This seems to be the conclusion of Lupin's adventures, and it's a clever tale, if a bit dark -- darker than is my preference for Lupin stories, but well-told, nonetheless. If you enjoy Lupin tales, or Raffles, or Sherlock Holmes, or The Saint, I wager you'll enjoy "The Teeth of the Tiger".

By Amy Lieber After reading about this book and young new author through facebook I was thrilled while reading this first book in a series I hope never ends! Ms. Sunseri has an amazing imagination which she puts into words so smooth and clean the only time I realised the book had ended is when I turned my kindle around hoping for...well I'm not sure what I was hoping for. I recommend Ms.Sunseri for any type reader but if you have a young adult at home who you wish would read more start them off with Awaken and they'll get hooked!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Riveting and Compelling Story By Melissa I absolutely loved this story and the way it was written. Normally I don't like the books that skip around from past to present but the way the author set it up so that you were learning the past at the same time the main character was regaining lost memories is absolutely brilliant. This was one of those books where you are saying to yourself "just one more chapter". I couldn't put it down. The most amazing thing is that this is a first novel for young teenage author, Maggie Sunseri. I am just in awe and cannot wait to see more from this extremely talented young lady.Read this book and buy it for your daughters!

It is comprehensive and formatted well. I have found no errors to date. It has working links from the contents page. It features just about everything Stevenson has done including letters. There are also three biographies included on his life by other authors. Value for money. 5 stars.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde......... By Keene One of the greatest stories ever (Jekyll & Hyde). Treasure Island was right there as well. This is an amazing collection from a writer that was totally astounded by the diversity, beauty and ugliness of life and had to tell his tales, had to get it out there. What stories they were! His own life story was something else, very interesting. A biography is included. A great collection. All of these Delphi Kindle collections are tremendous. There have been several film versions of Stevenson's Jekyll and Hyde story, the best in my opinion was the one with Frederick March. It was closest to Stevenson's vision and writing.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. The writing speaks for itself, the price and convenience are recommended By Kindle Customer It's not necessary for me to review Stevenson's work, so this review is really about this e-book edition. I have an old hardcover complete short stories of Stevenson that is falling apart now, but I really didn't want spend $25 to replace it. This e-book allows me to read all of those stories with relative ease and at a great price. Plus, it has all of his novels as well as some of his other work that I haven't read before. All for $2.50. Some previous reviews mention that it's hard to navigate and doesn't have a clickable table of contents. Those comments must be about an older version from this same publisher because this one has a clickable table of contents and is fairly easy to find your way around (for an e-book).

Dr. Jerry M. Lewis, Professor Emeritus in Sociology at Kent State writes: "On May 4, 1970, members of the Ohio National Guard fired into a crowd of Kent State University students, killing four and wounding nine. This action contributed to the first nationwide student strike in higher education in the United States. 'Love and War at Kent State' by Jon Michael Miller relives the two and one-half year period from the Fall of 1967 to mid-May of 1970, Miller tells the story of the protest as well as the shootings through the experiences of a passionate love story of Jake Ernst, a graduate student in English, and Tasha Van Sollis, a French teacher in the local high school. As he struggles with personal relationships, Jake becomes involved in student protest against the Vietnam War. As a teaching assistant, he becomes a faculty marshal at various protests. He encounters the May 4 shootings in that role. Miller has told a creative and important story of the protest culture at Kent State. Readers of this novel will imagine themselves walking on the Commons area thinking about protest and the Vietnam War and about what these significant events have meant to the United States.

Love and War at Kent State, by Jon Michael Miller

About the Author Jon Michael Miller, author of stories, novels, and a memoir, was a student at Ohio State University when the May 4 shootings at Kent State occurred. Ohio State had its own protest problems causing a campus shutdown. Thankfully no one was killed there. The Kent State shootings have haunted Miller ever since, however. Though the events have been studied, viewpoints aired, testimony given, conclusions proposed, we still struggle with questions of responsibility and justice. "Love and War at Kent State" offers a contemporaneous vantage point of campus events as they built through the months with no vision of what was about to happen that dreadful and lovely spring day on the Kent State campus. All other renditions the author knows about present the drama from hindsight, not as they began, simmered, boiled, and exploded in mayhem and death. Miller's novel presents such an imaginative vision of what many have seen as the climactic day of the national Vietnam protest movement.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A book about a critical time, a time of death on a college campus and the beginnings of the tremendous changes yet to come. By Tom B. Russo As historical fiction it works. I had a sense of the times, the situations and best, a sense of place. Kent State at a time in American history when the National purpose and direction of our country was being challenged by movements and social currents from war protesters to Black equality and to a small college trying to keep up with and adjusting to a younger view of Democracy. There are layers of conspiracy, manipulation and personal conflicts from love to parental prejudices and faculty failures and valiant adjustments. The author takes us around the campus, into the faculty rooms, into the minds of the radicals and the moderates. There is hope even after the disaster of the killings by National Guardsmen of four students. Two that were totally innocent of the dynamics that took their lives. A good book about a critical time in our Nations History.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Feeling History By Lit Student I love this book because it combines passionate romance with real history. Since I was only one month old when the shootings at Kent State occurred, the incident didn't mean much to me until I got to college and became more interested in the Sixties. Now, later, this novel gave me an opportunity to discover what actually happened, how it all started, and how difficult it is to establish responsibility amid chaos. Yes, I understand that such situations can be murky in terms of responsibility, but I am absolutely sure of one thing--those troops should not have shot those students. Mr. Miller shows us the murkiness, however, of placing blame, and does so step by step in the development of a complex and page-turning love story. Thank you, Mr. Miller for providing a format in which we not only learn history, but feel it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Life lived in turbulent times By LifelongReader I thoroughly enjoyed the intertwining of this well-written romance (from the male perspective!) and the engrossing details of a very turbulent time in our history. There are so many of us who remember the killing of students at Kent State University in 1970 -- those horrific photos on newspaper front pages across the country -- as if it just came out of nowhere. In this book we are right on the sidelines of history, watching for two and a half years as life on campus gradually careens out of control toward that heart-stopping moment. There were many unsung heroes in this story, and we needed to know that. An excellent read for both those of us who remember and those who didn't know.

As a wife and mom to six kids, she carves out time to write between carpool pick ups and date nights because words are her heartbeat. She lives a ferry ride from Seattle and is a total Pacific Northwestern'er who drinks chai lattes and wears Birkenstocks and has dreadlocks. She's a cliché, but doesn't mind it. Not even a little. A YA dystopian read that twists and turns throughout. I liked knowing some of the backstory so we are not kept in the dark as well. I can’t wait to read the next in the series and see what happens to Lucy and what she learns.Lucy was born the day the lights went out. A virus swept the world and very few are left in an unbreathable environment. She lives in a compound with her parents and a few others for the past 16 years. She can only go outside for a few minutes if she wears a hazmat suit and then decontaminates upon return. There is no power in the world, no light. Her parents were “preppers”, having been scientists before the lights went out and have sustained their compound up until now. They are running out of food and planning the next steps. A rare stranger visits the compound and tells of breathable air and an existence outside of their dark sealed off bunker.Lucy and her mom embark on a journey to find The Light, a refuge for women and children. The same stranger they saw at the compound helps lead them to the pickup point for The Light after giving Lucy a choice to come with him. She chooses The Light as her mother is adamant this is where she must go.They reach The Light and learn it is run by men called Humbleman and their prophet, the Nobleman. Women are Vessels and each are assigned a job to do around their marble encased structure. Lucy doesn’t like their polygamist ways and how the women are treated. She wants out to live a life of freedom and explore the world she never thought she’d see. Until she meets the Nobleman and everything changes. He is full of light and Lucy holds a light of her own that she keeps secret and maybe the two can figure it all out.

Visually appealing prose. Can't wait to read book tow, and see where the storyline goes. Strongly recommend that you consider this author

It was Lucy's journey of survival that kept me there. This is a series that as soon as you finish the first one you immediately start the second. So, instead of leaving spoilers- all I am going to say is that this story was well crafted, clever in how the 'cult' was set up and how when struggling for survival sometimes the scariest, harshest option is the safest. Love this book. Love this author. Finishing this review so I can start the next book now :-)

“The kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.” Tenuously clinging to their foothold in the Middle East, the people of the promise have abandoned the rule of judges and opened the door to their own destruction. Pushed by a demon-crazed tyrant, the Israelites battle endlessly against the technologically superior Philistine hordes. Drafting young men into his war machine, the frontier towns of Israel are left defenseless for roving bands of Amalekite and Ammonite raiders. Generations come and go and the adversary tenaciously assaults the moral fiber of the nation. The shadow of the king looms over the planet as Israel grasps for hope. Fearless prophets cry against the sins of the people and rebuke kings for their apostasy. A son must choose between loyalty and truth, outlaw renegades find in their leader the hope for Israel, and an old warrior must find the strength to stand against his own blood. Peace is a fleeting thought as pagans constantly assault from without, and Satan corrupts from within. If the promise is to be fulfilled, the people that carry that promise must survive.

History has repeated itself. The ancient Christians of the Middle East are being attacked by their neighbors. They are killed, deported, and forced into conversion while their women and children are raped and sold in the sex slave markets in Iraq and Syria. Yet another genocide is in the horizon—the fifth genocide in less than a century. The Christian Assyrians—the predominant Christian population in both Iraq and Syria—have formed militias and have armed themselves to defend their families and what is left of their honor. Unsupported by the international community, outnumbered and lacking the necessary weapons to fight back, the Assyrians must now depend on their Christian faith, loyalty, and integrity to face a ruthless enemy. Battle drums echo throughout the land as war is on the horizon. It is a historic battle of good versus evil that will determine the future of the Christian Assyrians in the Middle East.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. What if Right Now..... By Khavurta A Bold AwakeningTalk about an action packed, realistic novel set in the contemporary Middle East! This one has it all, good guys, bad guys, family, twisted international politics untwisting to protect the vulnerable long enough to have Americans and Russians cooperating without the unneeded vestiges of Cold War pride and blame.Assyrians scattered to the corners of the Western world as a result of the genocide perpetrated by a still unrepentant Turkey. They struggled to retain identity while building new economic lives in social settings where they adapted well to their surroundings whether in Moscow or in San Jose, California. While they formed enclaves to preserve language and culture, clustered in churches to hear millennia old chants in the language that had become the lingua franca of the later Assyrian Empire, they nonetheless felt comfortable enough in their Christianized settings to enter many vocations. Some became bankers and architects, while others continued the traditions created during the late 19th century in northwest Iran of pursuing careers in medicine or education. But some also joined the military services of the countries that had given them shelter from the fanaticism of the Middle East. And that is where this author plucks his main characters: from the ranks of Russian generals and intelligence officers, ace fighter pilots in the US Air Force and Navy Seals. If a move is made of this action packed story, there will be no role for Tom Cruise though a Top Gun is in the mix. What is the common denominator among these men and women? That narrative of displacement and persecution, a legacy of treating Christians as infidels by the Muslim majorities, a legacy that is leading not just to kidnapping and torture and crucifixion of Christians, but also to the beheading of American and European journalists, and Muslim intellectuals like the senior archeologist at Palmyra, Syria.Because they are the easternmost indigenous Christians, geographically, in the Middle East, they have taken the brunt of persecution for their faith with the spread of Islam. That is why they were the first to take Christianity to India (Kerala) and China along the Silk Road in the 7th century as Islamic forces advanced. And due to their geographic isolation among fanatics today, they are in danger. What if….. the scattered diaspora got cooperation from those who manufacture the weapons? What if, the UN allowed them to protect the Nineveh Plains, even though the fanatics have already destroyed the remnants of their early civilization there? What if… and around these scattered thoughts a very exciting novel has been built. Bold indeed.

A Bold AwakeningAmir AmiriRating: 4Review By: Sargena KaninyaSummary:◊ “A Bold Awakening” brings tears to your eyes and at the same time the feeling of pride and triumph as an Assyrian.◊ Throughout all wars, bloodshed, and even genocides that took place all over the history of the Middle East.◊ The Assyrian nation has always been threatened with notions of annihilation.◊ Others claiming to be the original people of the land have always forced the Assyrians out of their land persecuted Assyrian for the purpose of exterminating them out of the books of history.◊ Families are being torn apart; parents being brutally murdered and in cold blood in front of their young children. Events in the book start in the US then the body of the book continues in the Middle East.◊ The players and well-drawn and perfectly woven in the texture of the relevant events. An incredible amount of research and preparation were successfully done by the author to portray an accurate succession of events escalating in an artistic development of proceedings build up that keeps the reader attached to the pages of the book asking for more and laying in wait for the turn of events and the final action.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Must Read! By Sam A Bold Awakening is an amazing fiction/historical novel that I found to be leaning toward the reality rather than a novel. Starting from the fall of Mosul into the hands of ISIS and the cooperation of the neighboring countries has been carefully analyzed and crafted in this novel. With a little bit of fiction-mixing of the rise of the well-trained young Assyrians from all over the world, the novel gives an adrenaline-rush feeling of fighting the humanity’s number one enemy. This novel is written with simplicity, landing on the subject faster than a reader wishes for; therefore, this novel is in a fast-paste speed that requires an uninterrupted reading to grasp and connect the stories. The book is not written in a chronicle order purposely, which requires reader to pay more attention to stories happening concurrently.I highly recommend this book to whoever enjoys this type of novels. It is a fascinating and mesmerizing novel to read especially if you are an Assyrian!

30 percent of the Earths land mass is covered by forests, there is a good chance that a forest lays just behind your house, and if you live in a city it is just as likely that one lies just past the city limits. Yet most of us hardly notice them. Sam is a young boy who has played for years in his pleasant back yard under the shadow of a particularly old and looming forest, though age is not the only thing strange about this forest, or its keeper.

But I just couldn't put it down after I started. After reading it , I had a better understanding to the difficulties of rebuilding the peaceful society between the blacks and white, especially under the presence if KKK.It is a truly touching and sad book.

This is one of the few books I read that deal with its after-math. It gives a well written illustration of the Reconstruction. The reader becomes the free slave, carpetbagger, poor white and bankrupt plantation owner. As each character meets Gideon Jackson each person discovers their importance in the development of humanity.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Reconstruction's Freedom Road By ROBIN MCCALL Even though this fictional book was assigned for a class in Civil War history, it turned out to be an enjoyable assignment. It is a very readable account of Reconstruction from 1865 to 1877. The book describes how well Reconstruction was working for recently emancipated slaves in South Carolina, and how bad it was going for the elite southern whites there. It does an amazing job of portraying the positive struggles of African Americans, and some working class whites, and how they were succeeding, until the final withdrawal of Union troops from the South. This book is fun to read in the beginning, but the sad consequences of Reconstruction bring it to the inevitable conclusion. This does not detract from the book's accurate portrayal of what really caused Reconstruction to fail. This is an excellent book that you will have no trouble reading in one sitting. If you read this book, you will understand what really happened during Reconstruction, and the real facts that they failed to tell most of us in high school. This book was published in 1944, long before most US historians recognized how southern historians had distorted the country's view of Reconstruction. Thanks to recent historians, we now have a much more accurate picture of this era.

It is a story about John Durham, and his desire to marry Fanny Frisbee, who is living in France and who became Madame de Malrive by marriage. Though separated from her husband and in custody of their son, Madame de Malrive fears that she cannot get a divorce which would allow her to marry John Durham. Durham goes to her cousin by marriage, Madame de Treymes, to try to determine if the family will allow a divorce. Madame de Treymes tries to work out a deal, but always there is a test of Durham's character involved, and John Durham is a man of high character. It is a fairly quick read, and it does hold the reader's interest for the most part, but I felt it didn't meet the standards of what I have come to expect from Edith Wharton's writings. The story was fairly predictable, and the moral contrast between the Americans Durham and Madame de Malrive verses Madame de Treymes and the rest of her family has been done better in other stories. That is not to say that this is a bad story, I am not sure it is possible for Edith Wharton to have written anything which falls into that category, it is just that this is far from her best or most interesting works. I wouldn't avoid this story, but I also wouldn't go out of my way to find it.

By Kindle Customer Those who follow my reviews know about my soft spot for indie authors, and when I find one worth sharing I like to let people know about it.Well, I found another one.So I'm letting you know.I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting when I picked up The Whitehall Trials--but I do know exactly that I wasn't expecting what I got. This isn't a light-hearted YA mystery. There's no sweet love story, no predictable plot. Instead we get bad guys who are truly bad, friends who aren't what they appear to be, unexpected twists, spies, secret agents, and even assassination attempts. This is brooding, a bit dark, even creepy--all in the best way.I wish the book was a bit longer because I think there was room for some more character development, and if you're one of those who can't look past misplaced commas consider this your only warning. There is just a bit of language for those who want to be aware of that. But I found these grievances to be very minor compared with the fun I was having getting surprised with the unexpected. I'm happy to recommend it to my 14-year-old daughter.Way to go Michelle! I had a blast reading your book! Now we just need to have a conversation about when we can expect book two...

I also love that it was clean and appropriate for teens... the only problem was the time it took away from my family while I read nonstop until I reached the conclusion, last night. And the only other problem is that now I have to wait for the sequel to see what happens next. I should probably just schedule a babysitter now, so I can have some good uninterrupted reading time penciled in on my calendar.

By sunrabbit Everything you want in a book--mystery, suspense, romance, action, and characters that become real to you. Truly a unique and original story about a girl who starts out plotting a confrontation with her sister's killer and ends up pulled into a world of illegal scientific experiments and espionage, discovering mind-blowing secrets about her past along the way. Give it a whirl--you'll see!

Reads like a novel because they felt like they were living a novel. But it's the real life ministry story of Al and Jo Haan, who chose to start churches and did it raising 6 children in 8 States, living in 31 houses. 10 new churches and a dozen or more assists, 15 buildings, They destroyed one church which was started and run by an escaped high level Gestapo agent of Hitler. It was a cruel cult, With a 21 year olf girl they found a way to destroy the church; They did things like building the first solar heated church in the U.S. because they couldn't get a gas tap. The President praised it and a solar showplace. Then that church developed in 3 years to 100 members and 1500 children in 12 locations throughout the State and 225 paid employees. With his brother Ray and two friends they started a program for severely mentally handicapped or all ages; 43 years later it has 100 staff members caring 24 hours a day for well over 100 persons. The method of working for Al and Jo was to never look for work but simply ask God to put in front of them what He wanted done and they would do it because He was in it. The had triumph and tragedy with everything in between. There work and life is clear evidence that we can do all things through Him who strengthens us.
