Kirov Saga: Doppelganger Season 3 of the Kirov Series opens with Volume 17: Doppelganger, where the answer to the dilemma that now faces Mother Time will finally decide the fate of the ship and crew. Battle still rages in the Atlantic, and Elena Fairchild arrives on the scene to discover the crisis aboard Rodney has made her quest for the lost key impossible. Yet there she meets one other uninvited guest, an American officer who reveals that he is not the man he seems. Together they consider what they may have lost, and how it might yet be saved Meanwhile, Vladimir Karpov has discovered that his own personal fate is also in jeopardy as his dwindling lease on time runs thin. Realizing the dilemma that had plagued Fedorov for so long, he rises in Tunguska, intent on seeking the heart of a gathering storm, in a desperate attempt to save his own twisted soul from the ravages of Paradox. As he peers through the shattered glass of history, deep into the mirror of time, he suddenly discovers his own self looking right back at him. The exciting alternate history of WWII careens towards 1942, as Germany now makes its great bid to destroy Kirov’s Soviet Russia and smash the last of the stubborn British resistance in the Middle East. Yet plans for new weapons of war will appear, strange doppelgangers spawned from the legacy of Kirov. Soon they will darken the battlefields of Europe, when the tempo of technology will leap ahead to produce a new generation of tanks, aircraft and the deadly art of missile warfare arrives years early. Don’t miss the premier of Season 3 of the amazing Kirov Series—Doppelganger

The last couple of books seem like Schettler is trying to tie together disparate threads from his previous works (not just the Kirov series). It doesn't really work for me.The books are becoming tedious and Doppelganger doesn't move the story line forward much. Maybe Schettler is trying to make this series his cash cow like the 'Game of Thrones' tv series.

By Anandasubramanian Even after 17 books, the author leaves us wanting more.No other series i have read, including Star Carrier series has done this.I was eagerly turning the pages to see what happened to Karpov, when bam!, the book ended.Spoiler Alert:1) This book is more metaphysical than others in series. Makes you think a lot more. Some passages i had to read twice to understand what the author was conveying.2) The idea that a second Kirov had landed, and Mother Time was placing the first one in Purgatory to avoid a clash was expected as author indicated. Still was a surprise how it was handled. Kudos to author.3) I can feel Tovey's anguish and suspense as to how the new & yet old Kirov will handle itself, knowing fully well the contents of his diaries in an alternate timeline. Tovey's character can be developed better. When i met him during the first of the revised series, his emotions were displayed more clearly.4) Fedorov as a free radical is stunning, although expected.5) What happened to the Submarines? Suspense.6) What happened to the Japanese, whose fearsome battleship battled with Kirov?7) How will the Soviet union battle the Wehrmacht this time, since all the cream of good officers still exist and are an equal match?8) The way Hindenburg quietly went away without battling is a let down. Especially after the HUGE build-up the author gave.Leaves still a lot of questions unanswered and i dearly hope to see the Germans bring one of their missiles against Kirov or the other new ships. Just for fun.

By Frank Days This series has morphed from a highly entertaining and well written alternative history war epic with a time travel twist (all worthy of 4 stars minimum), to a a jumbled, confusing, self reflecting, and tediously boring fantasy and science fiction discourse on time travel with a lot of tedious dialog and very little action. Trying to integrate elements from the author's (boring) "Meridian" time travel series into the Kirov Series story-line just doesn't work for me and I found it difficult to finish this book. Given the rate at which the author cranks these volumes out, one can forgive one stinker in the lot- my reason for giving a two, rather than a one star rating. I only hope the author gets back to his old page-turner form, even if it requires a longer interval between novels. I have just finished reading his Book 18, and can say that it is a better read than "Doppelganger", although still a very far cry from the standards set by the earlier books in this series.
