For the twentieth time Miss Meredith asked herself why her nephew had fallen in love with this unknown girl, Violet, from London, who loathed the country. From Miss Heredith’s point of view, a girl who smoked and talked slang lacked any sense of the dignity of the high position to which she had been called. She was in every way unfitted to become mother of the next male Heredith — if, indeed, she consented to bear an heir at all. It was Miss Heredith’s constant regret that Phil had not married some nice girl of the county, in his own station of life, instead of a London girl. And now she was unwilling to wear the ancestral pearls, and was leaving them in her jewel box there in her room . . . Such thoughts were immediately dashed from her mind, however — and she nearly tumbled, descending the staircase in her hurry. Vincent, at the table with the other guests, had risen at the sound of her hurrying feet. “Oh, Vincent, I was just coming for you — something terrible must have happened “ Miss Meredith began, in a broken, sobbing voice. “I was going upstairs to my room — when I heard the scream, and then the shot. They must have come from Violet’s room”

The Hand In The Dark (Detective Classics), by Arthur J. Rees

About the Author Arthur J. Rees (Arthur John 1872-1942) was born in Australia and worked as a newspaperman before moving to England in his twenties. He wrote numerous mystery novels starting with the Merry Marauders in 1913. He collaborated with John R. Watson on two books, The Hampstead Mystery (1916) and The Mystery of the Downs (1928). Other works include The Shrieking Pit (1919), The Hand in the Dark (1920) and The Moon Rock (1922). His last book, The Single Clue was published shortly before his death in 1940. At least one advertisement for The Hampstead Mystery makes a claim that he worked for Scotland Yard at one point, but we have been unable to confirm this fact.

Rettke This is a well-written and complex golden age mystery (1920) which should keep you in the dark until the end. A recently married young wife is murdered. At first, there is a dearth of suspects, then attention is focused by Scotland Yard detectives on one suspect on the basis of apparently clear clues and a clear motive. But wait, all is not what it seems to be! I don't want to reveal too much but a private detective is brought into the case and brings to light new information, another crime, and a new suspect. A search is made, two suspects finally tell their stories, some new clues are identified, and the mystery is finally solved. There's lots of old-school detection fun for the reader in this story and, as a bonus, the author has a knack for apt descriptions. (In some of these he smoothly deflates some of our pompous little cultural ideas about history and progress that usually pass unnoticed.) This Resurrected Press edition contains a short but interesting foreword about the author and is almost free of the typos etc. all too frequent in low-price Kindle mysteries.

Almost everyone is around the dining table listening to a macabre story about a ruby in a skull. A scream is heard. A shot rings out. A woman dies. A junior Scotland Yard investigator investigates, then his superior. Finally the famous private detective Colwyn is called in. Lies are told; facts come out anyway. How will it all work out? Plus the setting is in England on a war footing during WWI, with the interesting effects this has on everyday life. A fascinating read.
