Due to Language & adult situations this book is suitable for readers 14+ New York Times & USA Today Bestselling author Danielle Jamie brings you book 2 in the Happy Endings Resort Series! **This is a STANDALONE novella BUT I may bring you more Killian and Summer down the road.** On her 18th birthday, Summer left her small hometown in Nebraska and never looked back. For the last three years, she’s lived in Southern California, working as a waitress in a small diner and making just enough money to rent a tiny apartment on the Pacific Ocean. Materialistic things never mattered. As long as she had her surf board and her mini Dachshund, Blue, life was good. That is until one day a mysterious and incredibly sexy guy strolled into the diner. Sparks fly instantly between Killian and her. Summer knows immediately after only a weekend together that she's falling in love with him. When Killian asks her to join him on a road trip across the country with no destination in mind, she finds herself setting off on a road trip she’ll never soon forget. **This is Book 2 in The Happy Endings Resort Series. Each book can be read and enjoyed without reading the others but we highly recommend you check out each fun new story that are releasing at the end of every month!** *EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT* It isn’t long and Killian has his electric guitar in his hand and he’s center stage at the mic commanding the room. The second he opens his mouth and strums the cords of Ten Tonne Skeleton, the entire room has their eyes on him. To all of our surprise Killian isn’t just good, he’s fricking amazing! Like he should be touring the world kind of good. I officially think that his cover of that song is now my favorite, and I’m so happy I decided to record the performance with my iPhone because I will want to watch it over and over again. Each time he smiles down at me, I can’t help but smile back up at him. He has never looked sexier to me than he does right now. It must be that whole rock star thing he has going on right now as he rocks out on stage in black skinny jeans, military boots and the same Guns N’ Roses tee he was wearing earlier. He’s wearing the same black Hurley hat he was wearing when we first met yesterday. There are girls all lined up along the front of the stage dancing and singing along to each song he sings. But Killian spends the entire hour singing straight to me, making his words from last night ring loudly inside of my head. He sees no one but me when I’m in the room. He looks in his element up there singing to the crowd of party goers. He has them all eating out of the palm of his hand. As I watch him perform the rest of his set though sadness begins to cloud my happy mood. After tonight is over, his time in Newport Beach will be over too. He’ll be back on the road and onto the next town, the next bar, and possibly the next girl.

By Ashley Ziegler I was lucky to receive an ARC copy and promised to write a review:This book is very different from Danielle Jamie's works with the absence of her usual explicit sex scenes but this book was absolutely amazing without it. This book is about two people who experience a real love at first sight moment. Summer is a free spirited girl who has had a rough start in life by losing her parents at a very young age and being brought into foster care. In walks Killian, the smoking hot mysterious musician. Their connection is instant and not wanting to lose that very real connection, he invites her along on his adventurous road trip. Although their connection is unpalpable, Killian has been keeping most things about him a secret from Summer. Will these secrets ruin the love they have for one another? Join their journey to find out. This is one of my favorite works by Danielle. Summer and Killian's story is very heartfelt and real. I loved it and I definitely recommend it!

Killian is a rocker and is amazingly romantic, caring and protective. I absolutely fell in love with him. No one can create characters who touch me quite like you can!! Wow, what a wonderfully strong female Summer is. She is as great as she is despite her past not because of it. When Danielle Jamie told me I had to read this book because she had a surprise in it for me, I never expected her to have used my name for one of her characters. I will forever hold this book dear to my heart and I am honoured and privileged to have my name in one of your amazing books. Thank you. I really can't recommend this novella. It is a fun story with characters who grab you and take you with them on their journey, I easily award it 5 stars~ Rosie

Ebook PDF SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES: Out of the Darkness, by Benjamin Baruch

Out of the Darkness is designed to help Christians overcome in the matters of the heart. The book contains four parts, Matters of the Heart, Dark Counsel, Ministry of Death, and First Fruit. Matters of the Heart deals with uncovering the deceptions within the heart of man which are the strongholds that keep people defeated in their walk of faith, issues of pride, forgiveness, depression, and shame. Apart from the discerning and searching work of the Holy Spirit, we are unable to actually know what is in our own hearts. But it matters what is in our hearts, for within the matters of the heart are the issues of life within all of us. It is good to know the times we are living in, and the Lord has raised up many watchmen to warn us of the times which have come. And it is good to be able to understand all prophecy and to know the lateness of the hour, and to prepare. It is good if you can hear the sound of the trumpet and if you respond, but the primary issue that we have got to get right, is our heart relationship with the Lord, and our relationship with the Lord is totally dependent on the matters within our heart. And that is one area where it is very easy to be wrong. It is easy to make a mistake in the matters of the heart. As a matter of fact, it is the most natural thing to do, for to be deceived in the heart is the nature of man. The heart of man is deceitfully wicked above all things, and as a result, is unable to discern its own true motives and is unable to see the secret sins hidden within. Dark counsel The dark counsel is the belief system that was formed within us, and has become a part of our personality, and it is how Satan has access to us. It is the buttons the enemy pushes to divide and conquer the church. It is the buttons they push to ruin marriages, to destroy friendships, and that cause Christians to stand up against other Christians. It is the belief system in us that causes us to be so toxic to each other. Yet when we are operating in that dark counsel, we are so convinced that we are right, and “they” are not right. Have you ever noticed it is always the other people who have it wrong? It is never us. The dark counsel of our mind is the belief system that had its origin in the hurtful experiences of our life. We formed it to help us understand and cope with the painful experiences of this harsh world in which we lived when we were young and thus it became our truth. It is the way we understood and learned to relate to the world of the flesh, and thus we became trapped as prisoners of this dark counsel in our minds. Throughout much of our lives it remained undisturbed in the deep recesses of our minds, buried within wounded memories, hidden even from ourselves within the deep places of our hearts. It is the belief system we learned from the world, but in reality it came straight out of hell, and it is very well organized and much defined. It was taught to us from our earliest years and we learned it well. It is how we learned to view our true self or our identity as we understood it, and how we therefore, learned to relate to the world around us. The dark counsel within us is the core belief system of the inner man, and it is built upon a foundation of lies. Its architecture and the frame of its construction is often built with shame and rejection, fear and unbelief; while the outer façade of this fortress is covered in pride which has been tightly wrapped around our minds. This structure has landscaped gardens in our imagination that are beautiful to behold, where we seemingly enjoy the pleasures of this world, but in reality the grounds around this building are covered with only briars and thorns. And this dark counsel within us has made each of us so toxic that when it manifests, and it does, it affects everything in our life until we finally uproot it and destroy it.

By TruthSeeker Page 31 says "GOD is not impressed with your knowledge of good and evil. You received this from the fall, and in fact, it is part of the sin nature within you. We operate in this knowledge through pride and through the mind of the flesh which is totally independent of the mind of Christ and if truth be told, it does no good at all"Why should you get this book????-- This book is filled to the brim with the truth and wisdom of GOD.-- Written in a way that is easy to understand.-- Tackles deep issues that are rarely (if ever) talked about at Church.-- Explains clearly the difference between the works of the Spirit and the flesh.-- Call us to be Holy as He is HolyThank you GOD!Can't wait to read the rest of this book and already ordered volume 2.

Like a surgeon's knife it will circumcise your heart and convict you, which is what is desperately needed in this complacent age. If you want to truly prepare spiritually for what is about to happen, please read the message in this book. I have never gotten this much freedom as I have since beginning to fast. Through fasting I was able to overcome major strongholds. Fasting seems to break down your hardened heart so that God can start working on your heart without all the pride and defensiveness (breaking up your fallow ground). For whoever has ears to hear. The time is short to get our hearts right with The Lord. I encourage all true believers to heed the messages outlined in the book. For those of us who are weary of false comforts and false assurances - this book will shine a light into your heart if you allow it to.

God Bless All who read and understand what the Lord is saying to us.

In this particular case, I know Harold and his Elditha will never experience old age, seeing as he died at the battle of Hastings. It makes me sort of weepy, and I am ridiculously glad that, as per this book, they had some weeks together before the momentous events that would transform England forever.Elditha Swanneck is an engaging character, mild but assertive, capable and wise. She handles her affairs in the way any wealthy noblewoman of the times would have done, she loves her children, her man. When Harold decides to marry - for real - she is understandably hurt, made fragile and invisible by his apparent disinterest. By choosing a new wife, Harold is sullying their union, relegating her to the role of mistress rather than mate, and I think Ms McGrath has done a great job in conveying all these feelings, further complicated by the fact that Elditha can't stop loving Harold, the man she has loved for more than half her life. She wants to be angry and send him away, but misses him too much to do so when he finally comes to see her. Even after he is dead, Elditha will always carry this larger than life man in her heart, attempting always to remain loyal to his memory.Ms McGrath does an excellent job in portraying all her central characters. From Elditha to Padar, from Gytha to Harold himself, these long dead people spring to life within the pages of her book, some of them so easy to love, some, like Queen Edith, portrayed as coldly pragmatic. To these vibrant characters must be added beautiful descriptive writing, pitch-perfect dialogue and a vivid historical setting. This author clearly knows the period she is describing so well that her details and artifacts, the glimpses she offers of interior design, of food and clothes, never become stilted or affected. She weaves harvest work and bee-keeping, herbal ointments and period pastimes, into her text with such skill that I am no longer here, but there, entering bower halls where women sit and gossip as they work, following Elditha into the chilly interiors of churchs, or into the welcoming warmth of a merchant's house.Further to this, Ms McGrath really knows how to write. POV is distinct throughout, Elditha quickly acquires a presence and a voice of her own, and I find it quite impossible to put this book down, so entranced am I by the elegant writing and the story as such. Is there a happy ending? Well, that is not for me to reveal, but I can more than warmly recommend this book, and I for one hope we will not have to wait long for the next one in the trilogy to come out.

Surviving the wreckage By Martin Lake I was attracted by this book because it deals with the aftermath of the Battle of Hastings and the early years of the Norman Conquest. This is a subject I have written about in my novels The Lost King: Resistance and Wasteland (The Lost King) and I was especially keen to read a novel which focused on the strong women who were forced to come to terms with a world where the old values and certainties were daily being swept away. This book did not disappoint. The central characters are brought vividly to life. Their motivations are complex and make the reader wonder just what strategies they will adopt in the months following the battle. I loved the central character Elditha and could see why she was so desired by the men of her time. I thoroughly enjoyed the depiction of her mother-in-law, the redoubtable Gytha.Although the book deals with the trauma of war these women are no adjuncts to the male warriors nor are they motivated solely by the events they are living through. They strive to salvage the essence of their lives and their families from the wreckage which the war has forced upon them. The story shows how the women's attempt to maintain a precious, precarious link to the past becomes increasingly difficult.I look forward to reading more books by Carol McGrath.

Enjoyable Love, Politics and Survival During the Norman Conquest By Tnafbrat Reading my way chronologically through British royal history, I am glad I came across this book. I am combining reading strict history/biography with historical fiction.Set around 1066 it covers the accent of Harold Godwinson to the throne of England, moving quickly to the Battle of Hastings against William the Conqueror and the aftermath of the Norman Conquest through the life of Harold's handfasted wife Edith/Elygyth.Handfasting during this time, whether done by witnessed ritual or private was in that twilight transition period between worship of the old gods and the incoming sweep of christianity. Though handfasting had been and was a normal, legal and accepted practice, the more christianity spread it's power, the less approved it was leaving wives considered more as concubines and not a true legal wives in the eyes of the Church.Harold's rise to King of England occurred upon the death of King Edward the Confessor without heir. William of Normandy was threatening as well as the Kings of Denmark and Norway. Edward had brought with him a large contengent of Norman lords and friends when he was recalled from exile in Normandy to be King lavishing them with titles and lands. The practice was for the Wittan (a gathering of the english lords) to elect a king in the abscence of an heir. The English, resenting this intrusion of foreigners, wanted a king from England, and fearing invasion from Denmark and Norway they wanted a strong warlord, They elected Harold. Wanting to secure the succession with legal heirs, the Church, english lords of strong christian practice and the Norman factions would not accept a handfasted wife as a legal and true queen therefore, they required Harold to marry someone acceptable in a christian ceremony, thus putting Edith aside and complicating her life an the lives of her children further after the Battle of Hastings. Still considered Harold's wife and their children legitimate by many english, she and her brood were a complication in the life and rule of William as having claim to the throne of England.Being historical fiction, there is obviously embellishment and some tweeking of facts, but in all, it gives the reader a good overview of the times. Geared more toward female readers, it is a good story of love and survival without being a "bodice ripper".

Secret of Betrayal: Book Two of The Destroyer Trilogy (Volume 2), by DelSheree Gladden

About the Author DelSheree Gladden was one of those shy, quiet kids who spent more time reading than talking. Literally. She didn't speak a single word for the first three months of preschool, but she had already taught herself to read. Her fascination with reading led to many hours spent in the library and bookstores, and eventually to writing. She wrote her first novel when she was sixteen years old, but spent ten years rewriting and perfecting it before having it published. Native to New Mexico, DelSheree and her husband spent several years in Colorado for college and work before moving back home to be near family again. Their two children love having their cousins close by. When not writing, you can find DelSheree reading, painting, sewing and trying not to get bitten by small children in her work as a dental hygienist. DelSheree has several bestselling young adult series, including "Invisible" which was part of the USA Today Bestselling box set, "Pandora." The Date Shark Series is her first contemporary romance series, and her first book in her upcoming new adult series, The Ghost Host, will be releasing 2015.

By Sneha *I received the copy in exchange of an honest review.*This series is taking a serious turn and has me on edge of my bed. I just couldn't post my review as my net was not working, it's good I wrote down what I felt. I will post the same thing.Darn! it ended :( but I don't mind *evil grin* I've third book to devour. It is continuation of first and it so awesome, with Libby accepting what she is and embracing being The Destroyer; Cassia and with determination to help Ciphers. As the story progresses, it gets more complicated, how and what they were told was all faux. It's brilliantly well written and when you get out after finishing, you will realize you read the whole book in one sitting. It's captivating and filled with mystery and suspense and romance. I don't have words to write my emotions I felt throughout the book and aftermath of finishing reading it.When I first read Inquest, after completing I zoomed to Smashwords to read first 20% of the book which after being through 3 chaps I realized it was third book. For that I stalled reading the Trilogy, till I forgot details. So I started now book two is out of the way and on book three.I just can't put in words, and scared and excited about book three, it will end and afraid to let it go.I don't want to dislike Milo and want Libby with him but Branden is that awesome, with whole things to find out and the chaos and anticipation, the prophecy and decision to choose between Braden and Milo it's a whole roller coaster ride. The betrayal, I'd never have guessed it would be him and I don't feel betrayed with Libby.Beauty in aftermath of Destruction. This line just stuck with me and I believe in it too. It's definitely a must read

It is the second book of the Destroyer Trilogy and I cannot wait to read the next installment. I found myself staying up way too late to see if they were going to be successful in freeing the Ciphers. There was a twist or two that I did not see coming. The characters in this book are not your typical teenagers in that they have special powers. Their attitudes however were spot on. I kept waiting on fist fights to break out between Milo and Lance. Then you throw in Brendon and it is surprising that they were all able to work together. Libby does not always make the right decisions, but that is part of being a teenager and she has a lot of tough decisions to make.I give this book 4 stars. I found it to be very entertaining and outside of the mainstream. It was something different to read and now I will not stop until I have read all three books. I like this author’s writing style so much that I have already purchased some of her other books.

By Turning the Pages Secret of Betrayal is the sequel to Book 1 of The Destroyer Trilogy and Gladden jumps right back in to Libby's story. I love that Libby hasn't changed much. Even though she's accepting her fate as the Destroyer, she's still independent, strong, and speaks her mind without being overly aggressive or annoying. She's a character that it is easy to root for. While Inquest dealt mainly with Libby coming to terms with what being the Destroyer means to the rest of the world, Secret of Betrayal delves into the hidden role she plays and the mystery of why the Guardians fear her so much. Libby's trust in everyone is questioned as their motives are as secret as what she is supposed to do with her gifts. Gladden does an awesome job of building an in-depth plot without making it so overly stuffed that it feels as if your lost in details.Secret brings in Braden, who was introduced at the end of Inquest. I have to admit I am really torn over his character's presence and the role he plays. He definitely is the third point in the a love triangle with Libby and Milo, and I can see the attraction. But I love Libby and Milo. Milo in the first book is the only one who stands by Libby. But in book 2 he seems like a completely different character, so much that I wanted to reach into the pages and strangle him. It makes me very curious how Gladden is going to resolve this triangle in a way that not only makes sense, but also keeps the readers satisfied.Overall, this is an amazing continuation of The Destroyer Trilogy, and I can't wait to read the final book!

O Pioneers!, by Willa Cather

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—This work, written in 1913, was the first in Cather's "Great Plains" trilogy, and it was followed by The Song of the Lark and My Antonia. Strong-willed, intelligent Alexandra Bergson is the daughter of Swedish immigrants. She inherits her father's farmland instead of it being left to her brothers, Emil, Oscar, and Lou, because she has the vision and foresight to try new crops, buy additional lands, and take risks in order to reap future rewards. Cather's poetic and lyrical writing captures the Nebraska prairie and rolling hills. Using a variety of voices and capturing the dialects of the various immigrants who inhabit the novel, reader Betsy Bronson is impeccable. Her melodic voice imbues Cather's words with the sentiments of love, envy, jealousy, and peace that drive the story. This recording is delightful and leaves one with the understanding and appreciation that the land is always there for those who take time to truly see and appreciate it.—Patricia Ann Owens, formerly with Illinois Eastern Community Colleges, Mt. Carmel

Review The land belongs to the future... that's the way it seems to me....I might as well try to will the sunset over there to my brother's children. We come and go, but the land is always here. And the people who love it and understand it are the people who own it -- for a little while."O Pioneers! (1913) was Willa Cather's first great novel, and to many it remains her unchallenged masterpiece. No other work of fiction so faithfully conveys both the sharp physical realities and the mythic sweep of the transformation of the American frontier -- and the transformation of the people who settled it. Cather's heroine is Alexandra Bergson, who arrives on the wind-blasted prairie of Hanover, Nebraska, as a girl and grows up to make it a prosperous farm. But this archetypal success story is darkened by loss, and Alexandra's devotion to the land may come at the cost of love itself. At once a sophisticated pastoral and a prototype for later feminist novels, O Pioneers! is a work in which triumph is inextricably enmeshed with tragedy, a story of people who do not claim a land so much as they submit to it and, in the process, become greater than they were.

Review "The first of the Cather Scholarly Editions sets a high standard of quality. . . . Text and context reveal the splendor of O Pioneers! and enrich both the experience and study of Cather's extraordinary prose."-Western American Literature

139 of 143 people found the following review helpful. For a Dream, there is a Price By Robin Friedman Cather published her second novel, O Pioneers, in 1913 at the age of 40. Together with My Antonia it is the novel for which she is best known. Years after writing the book, Cather wrote of it " Since I wrote this book for myself, I ignored all the situations and accents that were then thought to be necessary."The book takes place on the plains of Nebraska in the late 19th Century as the Prairie is settled be Swedish, Bohemian, and French immigrants trying to eke out a living from what appears to be a harsh, inhospitable land. The heroine of the book is Alexandra Bergson who inherits her father's farm as a young woman, raises his three sons and stays with the farm through the harsh times to become a successful landowner and farmer. The books speaks of being wedded to the land and to place. In this sense it is an instance of the American dream of a home. It also speaks of a strong woman, not in cliched, late 20th Century terms but with a sense of ambiguity, difficulty and loss. This is a story as well of thwarted love, of the difficult nature of sexualtiy, and of human passion. There is also the beginning of what in Cather's works will become an increased sense of religion, Catholicism in particular, as a haven and a solace for the sorrow she finds at the heart of human endeavor. Above all it is a picuure of stark life in the midwest. There is almost as much blood-letting in this short book as in an Elizabethan tragedy. Cather's picture of American life on the plains, even in her earliest books, is not an easy or simple one. Some readers may quarrel with the seemingly happy ending of the book. I don't think any will deny that Alexandra's happiness is dearly bought or that it is bittersweet.I tendend to shy away from this book in favor of Cather's later novels. I feared that it would be conventional and trite. The stereotyping was mine, however. This is a thoughtful, well written story of immigrant life on the plains and of the sorrow pain, and strength of the American experience.

The writing and the story are so wholey lovely, without pomp or ceremony. An immigrant father bequeaths his land to the care of his daughter on his deathbed, rather than to his sons, because he sees that her love of the land and her family runs deep and that she has the heart and spirit necessary to survive the harsh reality of the plains. So begins one of the greatest love stories of all time. I don't use the term love story loosely; this book contains love in its many intricate, shifting, and enduring forms: the love of the land, the love of a dream, love within families, love of the past, love of tradition, love of new opportunities, love between friends, the love between men and women, and the love of living. This book gets deep under your fingernails, like the very earth that it celebrates. And though, many of the events recounted are sad, it is the kind of sadness that is rich in hope

Mazza In "O Pioneers!", her classic novel first published in 1913, Willa Cather wrote, "The history of every country begins in the heart of a man or a woman." By revealing to us the hearts of those pioneer immigrants in this book, Cather offers a moving meditation on United States culture and history."O Pioneers!" tells the story of a community in Nebraska farm country. Her main character, Alexandra Bergson, is a Swedish immigrant. Cather creates a marvelous portrait of the community and its rich mix of European ethnic groups: Norwegian, Swedish, French, etc. It is especially fascinating to see the multicultural, multiethnic world they created in the United States. Cather also depicts the cultural and linguistic "shift" that takes place along generational lines.Cather's story deals with issues of economics, gender roles, and sexuality. In addition to the formidable Alexandra, she creates a cast of compelling characters. And her luminous prose style evokes all of the sensations of Alexandra's world: the smell of ripe wheat, the chirping of insects in the long grass, the golden play of light in an apple orchard. But this is Alexandra's book. She is a great American heroine who reminds me of such beloved characters as Zora Neale Hurston's Janie (from "Their Eyes Were Watching God") or Alice Walker's Celie (from "The Color Purple"). Like those great characters, Alexandra will break your heart, deeply touch your soul, and ultimately leave you feeling richer for having known her. Finally, as an interesting companion text to "O Pioneers!" try "Anna Christie," the 1922 play by U.S. writer Eugene O'Neill. O'Neill's life and career were contemporary with Cather's, and "Anna Christie," like "O Pioneers!", deals with a Swedish immigrant woman in the United States.

Islands in the Mist breathes new life into ancient Welsh mythology, masterfully weaving its characters into a rich tapestry of heroism and sacrifice.

The great warrior Bran has been called home from the battlefield to his mother's deathbed, where he vows to solve the strange mystery surrounding what fatally attacked her in the night. He travels to the Crossroads, seeking the wise counsel of Talhaiarn, high priest and advisor to his clan, where he learns similar attacks have been reported by clans to the north and east - horrors that Talhaiarn determines are the dark handiwork of the powerful Cerridwen, a rogue priestess of the sisterhood that dwells on an island surrounded by the misty waters of Lake Tegid.

On his journey Bran encounters the fiery, red-haired Lucia, widow to a Roman centurion, and her strangely gifted stable boy, Gwion, an enigmatic child graced with understanding far beyond his years. Lucia possesses "the Sight", an ability that has plagued her from the time she was a small girl, tormenting her with visions of terrible things that invariably come to pass. Fate leads Lucia to discover that many of her maternal ancestors were masterful women gifted with psychic abilities, and some of them have been watching her from the shadows for years.

Upon returning to his village, Bran finds himself at odds with the hot-tempered Aelhaearn, who is determined to become their clan's next chieftain. Much to Aelhaearn's disappointment, Bran's sister, now priestess in her mother's place, convinces the clan to choose Bran for the honor instead.

In the aftermath of their conflict, Bran learns something shocking about his rival. Slowly all are pulled into the seductive maelstrom of Cerridwen's power, and though many will fight bravely, only one is able to make the sacrifice required to defeat her.

By Gamyr Worf Ms. Hofer has brought something new and refreshing to the fantasy genre. It's so nice to hear a story that breaks away from the overused formulaic no name working class underdog turned unsuspected hero and all powerful wizard with the salvation of the world riding on his shoulders. It's particularly nice that she does so while exploring the Welsh and Celtic lore from our own world's history rather than finding the need to reimagine a fictional universe in which to base her story. Hofer's style is imaginative, rich in emotion, suspenseful, multi-layered, and extremely well thought out. For a first time endeavor, this break out author has got my full attention. Can't wait for the sequel! :)

I read it all the way through on a marathon because it was simply more interesting than anything else I was doing. The story is engaging, with characters I really cared about, as if I was watching complex lives unfold, yet in a natural environment filled with mystical realities. The background of mythology is skillfully interwoven and gives the entire story a feeling of truth and history, made more real with magic and mysteries. This story is a perfect holiday gift, packed with romance (my favorite) and filled with surprising, gutsy action. This is a world to get lost inside, in a way that has not been done before.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. and great plot twists By William Berge Although it had a been a long time since I'd read a book in the fantasy genre, I became completely engrossed in Islands in the Mist. I couldn't put it down. The characters are complex and well developed. The story is exciting and engaging throughout. Islands has everything one could want in a story, intrigue and betrayal, action and suspense, demons, heros and lovers, and great plot twists. Ms Hofer's writing is descriptive and beautiful. She draws upon a deep knowledge of mythology and geography as well as passionate creativity to give the reader an experience that is riveting, fun and exciting. It is an outstanding first endeavor. I can't wait for the sequel.

Freshly stained with the blood of Caesar Gallus, Agent Numidianus must spy on a rising Franco-Roman hero rescuing Roman Gaul from Alemannic raiders. The dashing General Claudius Silvanus once betrayed Marcus’ father but later saved Marcus himself from execution. Is Silvanus now the man to save the Roman Empire of the West—or destroy it? Should Marcus warn him of treachery in Emperor Constantius II’s court or let the Fates exact revenge on his behalf? The Wolves of Ambition is a thrilling espionage adventure set in the post-Constantine era. It plunges Marcus Gregorianus Numidianus into a contest between military heroes versus intrigant courtiers for influence over the paranoid Constantius—all of them embers of an empire blindly smoldering toward extinction. Packed with action and suspense, the Embers of Empire series is delighting fans of Bernard Cornwell, Steven Saylor, and Robert Harris.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Murderous intrigues at the Imperial Court By JPS This is a rather excellent book – the fourth in the Series - on another event that followed the demise of Caesar Gallus during the little known reign of Constantius II, the last surviving son of Constantin. The event is historical and related by Ammianus, who was a rather biased eyewitness on the staff of General Ursicinus. Ursicinus was Master of Cavalry of the Roman Army in the East and retained this command until AD 359, when he was finally blamed for the fall of a couple of fortresses to the Sassanid Persians and disgraced despite not having received the military support that he was expecting. The physical description of the ageing warlord was a very good one, however fictitious it may be.The main quality of this volume (in my opinion, of course) is that it very much follows what is known from the sources while introducing some elements which, even if fictional, are at the very least plausible and credible. A related feature are the inner workings of the Emperor’s Council and the plots among its members, most of which, including the scheming eunuch Eusebius, the Prefect of Gaul and the Consul (and ex-general) Arbetio, are historical. Also good and mostly convincing is the depiction of the character of the intelligent and paranoid Emperor Constantius II who, unfortunately, have every reason to be paranoid, as also shown in the book. Another historical character to be introduced is a young, unsure and (rightly) fearful and bookish Julian, the future pagan Emperor, just before he became Cesar in the West.Another interesting character is that of Sylvanus, the other “great general” of the Empire at the time, and the Commander of the Gallic Army. He was the son of Bonitus, one of the Frankish warlords who had submitted to Constantine, fought for him and served him loyally and with distinction, although his ferocious Frankish mother is largely if not entirely fictional. He was responsible for Constantius’ victory at Mursa five years before by betraying Magnentius as mentioned in this volume and described in more detail in a previous one. He had, by the time this volume begins, accumulated a number of successes in North-Eastern Gaul and Germania, started to re-establish the Rhine frontier and had recaptured Claudia Agrippina which he has made into his headquarters and his forces were a mixture of Gallo-Roman and Franco-Roman battle-hardened soldiers, including those of the elite regiments of the Petulantes and Brachiantii. Finally, he was pushed into usurping the purple out of what can only be seen as a rather desperate gamble. With regards to the intrigue, Ursicinus was sent to relieve Sylvanus of his command and the latter was summoned to explain himself to the Emperor on the basis of forged letters, as shown in the book. Where some fiction has been introduced, however, is in the exact circumstances of his demise and what exactly the Emperor’s intentions may have been in reality.I do however have a few reservations, some of which may have been already expressed in reviews of previous volumes in the Series. One is about the Agentes in Rebus themselves which, like any other schola, were at the service of the Emperor. It is therefore entirely anachronistic to portray them, once again, as being at the service of some greater good, whether it be “the Empire” or “the truth”. Apart from being anachronistic, his was simply impossible in the Fourth Century Constantinian Roman Empire which had become absolutist and a theocracy that was very dominated by the Emperor himself.I also have a handful of little grips of a more technical nature. Although the author does have the hero running into trouble along the way, having Numidianus galloping up and down the roads and mountains between Mediolanum (modern Milan) and Agrippina (modern Cologne) at full speed through what had essentially become a war zone required suspending disbelief from the present reader. There are of few more such “quibbles”. I was, for instance, a bit surprised to learn that the actual city of Mainz, which was one of the key fortresses on the Rhine, was held by only a couple of hundred frontier troops at the time and is described as having been previously (that is before the insurrection of Magnentius in AD 350) held by a single cohort.Four strong stars for a good read and a book that has been carefully researched and crafted (despite a few typos here and there).

This author did a great job of portraying life during the beginning of the 20th Century. It also really made me think about love and how it can grow and mature. Also, it made me realize how difficult life can be when you don’t have enough money to pay for the basic necessities of life. The main character was smart, even if she did have a few flaws, but you couldn’t help but cheer for her. She was relatable and interesting, but definitely not cliche. I enjoyed the quasi-diary method used to indicate the date of each chapter. It was also interesting to see the main character change and grow as life threw her curve balls.

The House of Mirth reveals Edith Wharton as a powerful storyteller with a sharp eye toward the uncivilized ways of some of New York high society’s most outwardly civilized citizens.

First published in 1905, The House of Mirth shocked many with its candor and piercing insight into New York’s fashionable society. Lily Bart, impoverished though well-born, lives in this shallow, new-moneyed class, in which men make the money and women spend it.

There amongst the glib diversions of the newly rich, Lily seeks a husband who can not only maintain her in this charmed existence, but can also provide unstinting admiration.

Scandal, however, intervenes. Accused of being the mistress of a wealthy married man, Lily must withdraw from society. She becomes a milliner, but will she be able to survive the provincial life outside the hothouse?

The House of Mirth, by Edith Wharton

Review With an introduction by Elizabeth Hardwick, Contemporary Reviews, and LettersBetween Edith Wharton and Her Publisher " A frivolous society can acquire dramatic significance only through what its frivolity destroys."--Edith Wharton Lily Bart knows that she must marry--her expensive tastes and mounting debts demand it--and, at twenty-nine, she has every artful wile at her disposal to secure that end. But attached as she is to the social world of her wealthy suitors, something in her rebels against the insipid men whom circumstances compel her to charm. "Why must a girl pay so dearly for her least escape," Lily muses as she contemplates the prospect of being bored all afternoon by Percy Grice, dull but undeniably rich, "on the bare chance that he might ulti-mately do her the honor of boring her for life?" Lily is distracted from her prey by the arrival of Lawrence Selden, handsome, quick-witted, and penniless. A runaway bestseller on publication in 1905, The House of Mirth is a brilliant romantic novel of manners, the book that established Edith Wharton as one of America's greatest novelists. " A tragedy of our modern life, in which the relentlessness of what men used to call Fate and esteem, in their ignorance, a power beyond their control, is as vividly set forth as ever it was by Aeschylus or Shakespeare." --The New York Times Edith Wharton (1862-1937) was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in1920 for The Age of Innocence. But it was the publication of The House of Mirth in 1905 that marked Wharton's coming-of-age as a writer.

"From the Trade Paperback edition.""A tragedy of our modern life, in which the relentlessness of what men used to call Fate and esteem.... is as vividly set forth as ever it was by Aeschylus or Shakespeare."--"The New York Times" "Uniquely authentic among American novels of manners." --Louis Auchincloss "Brilliant....[Lily Bart] is a grand tragic heroine, fit to take center stage with Manon or Emma Bovary, Gwendolen Harleth or Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Anna Karenina or Isabel Archer." --Hermione Lee

About the Author Edith Wharton (1862-1937) was raised in New York City in a socially prominent family. She wrote the novels The Age of Innocence, Ethan Frome, Old New York, The Old Maid, and The House of Mirth.

MY FRIEND LILY BART By Charles Slovenski I stumbled upon a review of the recent film of THE HOUSE OF MIRTH in the TLS and, in order to have the novel firmly fixed in my mind (that is, before the lush, seductive images of film forever eradicated Wharton's novel from me) I dragged my copy off the shelf for a re-read. It had been 16 years since I last read of Lily Bart and her life, and I didn't realize how much I had missed her. For me, this is one of the great reading experiences, one of a handful that make reading a book the deeply moving and human exchange that it is. Despite the distance of wealth, property, time and manners, Wharton manages to make Lily's world and life palpable to anyone who will listen. The clash of money, morals, personality and circumstance is infinitely developed and played out in front of a never fading natural world. Once again, I was deeply moved by Lily Bart and at the end, felt I had lost someone myself.

By Jana L.Perskie Edith Wharton's "The House Of Mirth" is a sad, but brilliant commentary on the closed, repressive society of the rich, upper class, New York nobility, at the dawn of the 20th century. It is also the story of the downfall of one woman, who attempts to live by her own rules, with no sponsor and no money of her own. Her parents are dead and she lives with relatives.Lily Bart is one of society's most eligible women, at the height of her powers, when the novel opens. Though she has little money, she has family connections, good breeding and the hope of coming into an inheritance. Beautiful and very charming, Lily has been brought up to be an ornament, as were most women of her class at that time. She is a gilded bird with a noble heart, but clearly she is not aware of the restrictions of her cage. Part of Lily's tragedy is that she does have character, spirit, and a conscience. However, she does not know how to align these attributes, with her ornamental avocation, and her ambitions to marry a wealthy man of good birth. As expected, Lily is popular with both bachelors and married men. Most of the bachelors propose marriage at on time or another. The only man she has real affection for is her dear friend, Lawrence Seldon, a barrister, whose lack of income makes him entirely unsuitable as a husband. Lily had developed a gambling habit to support her lifestyle, and supplement her allowance. An unfortunate losing streak has put her into debt. In her naivete, she forms an unsavory business alliance with a married man. Later, she is unjustly accused of having an affair with him and their business arrangement also come to light. Her family cuts her off without a penny. Society friends and connections reject their former darling, trying to extricate themselves from any repercussions Lily's indiscreet behavior may have on their reputations. Former friends turn vicious. The irony is that Lily has never committed any of the sins she is accused of. Several of her friends have, and frequently...but their sins are committed with the utmost discretion. Lily's crime is indiscretion. Her beaus disappear, as do her marriage prospects. The hypocrisy of her class becomes more apparent to her, as she searches for a means to survive, with all the familiar doors closed in her face.Lily seeks employment as a seamstress in the New York City slums, and lives there also, in a humble room with no refinements. Having no formal training and no real ambition, (her ambivalence about work is obvious), she sinks into deep depression and begins to decline. Laudanum helps her to sleep, and she becomes dependent on the drug.Lily's descent, from society's beautiful darling to a disheveled, desperate woman living in a shabby hotel room, addicted to drugs, is disturbing reading, to say the least. Her decline seems inevitable, especially after we read of her many poor and self-destructive decisions. She seems to sabotage herself. However, Lily Bart is ultimately the victim of a cruel society that sacrifices anyone who does not conform to its expectations. After reading "House Of Mirth," for the first time several years ago, Lily's character has remained clear in my mind. I think of her from time to time with great poignance and a sense of personal loss.

By Mary Whipple Published in 1905, The House of Mirth offers a blistering social commentary on the lifestyles and behavior of super-rich society. Having grown up in this society, Wharton evaluates it here as an insider, and her trenchant observations give this early novel a liveliness and verisimilitude not characteristic of "aristocratic" novels written by outsiders. Set at a time in which the old, moneyed aristocracy was being forced to admit newcomers who had made their recent fortunes through industry, the novel shows moneyed society in flux, the old guard ensuring their exclusivity against parvenus who are not the "right type," at the same time that their sons and daughters were often securing large fortunes through marriage into some of these new families.Lily Bart, a beautiful young woman of good family whose father lost everything when she was only nineteen, is left dependent on wealthy relatives in this society until she can charm a financially secure suitor into marriage. At age twenty-nine, she is no longer a debutante, and the pressure is mounting for her to marry, though she lacks the unlimited financial resources of social rivals. Still, her wit and charm make her a delightful companion, and she is never at a loss for suitors. Intelligent enough to want a real marriage and not just a merger between families, she has resisted making a commitment to date, though the clock is ticking. As Lily tries to negotiate a good marriage and future for herself, she is aware that the competition is fierce. Women "friends" pounce on the latest gossip and spread rumors to discredit rivals, and Lily's reputation is tainted with hints of impropriety. Her opportunities for a good marriage begin to dwindle, and when her aunt, Mrs. Peniston, dies and leaves her a bequest that covers only her debts, Lily is no longer able to compete in the society so attractive to her and begins her downward spiral.Wharton creates a complete picture of turn-of-the-century New York society and its "important" people--their lack of scruples, their opportunism, their manipulations, and their smug self-importance, characteristics one may also see in Lily when she is part of this society, though there is a limit on how far she will stoop. But Wharton also shows how quickly a woman may become an outcast when the money runs out and she is thrown on her own resources without any training for any other kind of life. A well-developed melodrama filled with revealing details, this novel established Wharton's reputation as a novelist/commentator on the manners and morals of high society and those who would participate in it. n Mary Whipple

An ancient prediction will rock the modern world... Almost six thousand years ago – before the wheel, before paper – sages predicted that in the 6th part of the 6th millennium humanity would begin to tap into a well of infinite wisdom. The prediction was recorded in the Zohar, an ancient 13th century writing containing the words of sages from millennia past. ‘My idea was to create a story where the key to reality is buried within the plain text of ancient lore that has withstood the test of time, yet is continually debunked by modernity on the basis of being irrelevant to our day. I have often wondered as to how the Prime Mover would reveal the secrets that would help humanity make sense of it all. Why not embed these secrets in coded form with the plain text of simple stories which are understandable across the millennia, and whose more complex message can only be revealed with increasing technological sophistication as humanity evolves?’ says author John. Hazael, his grandfather Aaron and a Buddhist monk Vajrayogini dedicate their lives to studying and analyzing mathematical structures within these texts, certain that at a point in time sophisticated computers will be able to produce coherent patterns of information that will resolve into a beautifully simple explanation of our raison d’etre. At the point where some clarity becomes apparent, Vajrayogini co-opts two additional mathematicians, Jewish and Muslim, to help them fast track the project. Their groundbreaking work is to air publicly for the first time at an international conference in Jerusalem. But is the world ready for what the texts have to say? Fragment of Truth is a thrilling work of adult fiction that begins in 1948 but concerning the present day and the imminent future.

Powerful idea envisioning a future for all humanity By Terfel Jenkins Jordan Klepper said "Science fiction is powerful because it envisions a future for all of us. It’s an allegory for the people we can become: one that encompasses a multitude of voices and perspectives.” This would cover the incredible idea behind this book and I highly recommend that every person should read what could be.

Whit Branham At His Wry, Gritty Best By wayne d. dundee I've championed Richard Prosch's writing so often in the past that it's getting hard to find new praise to heap on, and even harder to believe that he just keeps getting better. But he does.HOLT COUNTY JUSTICE is a leisurely paced, low key gem that presents a somewhat more mature Deputy Whit Branham than we've seen before and puts him through his paces in a story full of colorful characters, danger, twists, and some real surprises. When the violence comes, it hits with an impact that makes it more than just another action sequence. The depth and individuality of the characterizations leave lasting impressions. And, as usual, Prosch's writing is distinct and tight.Strongly recommended,

A new county is being organized, but until that's done, he's the only law for that area. He's been called to cut down a body lynched by a vigilante committee, the third time in recent months. This time it's a woman, the widow Slocum, a so-called psychic that folks went to for their fortune telling.Branham is also babysitting, shepherding a judge's nephew who's local constable, the planned sheriff for the new county. There's also a secret about this whole lynching mess that someone wants kept secret, willing to kill to preserve it. Branham is on a tightrope as he tries to clear it up and stay alive.Another fine tale of Richard's native Nebraska, the latest addition to his impressive body of work..
