Epic in scope By deha Janna is forced to flee for her life, she sets out in search of her unknown father, hoping to avenge the death of her mother and bring the murderer to justice. Disguised as a youth, Janna takes shelter on a manor farm managed by the handsome nobleman, Hugh. There she encounters mysterious acts of sabotage marked by posies of rue, culminating in the disappearance of Hugh's young nephew, Hamo.It is Pulman’s characters that stay with a reader. So generously drawn and flawed and honest in their cruelties and compassion and righteousness and sacrifice, in their embrace of family, their reach toward spirit. The Stolen Child” is truly spellbinding. . . Epic in scope, exquisite in execution. In this deeply researched work, Pulmann captures her characters’ disparate beliefs, remaining impartial even as they pass judgment on the customs they find simultaneously fascinating and repellent in the others. The story conveys a raw beauty in its depictions and journeys, daily life within, and offers many intense impressions of conflicts and differences, yet it is most affecting when evoking its protagonists’ shared humanity and life force burning brightly within her. A stunning, masterful work of staggering depth. . . it is like nothing you have ever read, and read it you must. The Janna Chronicles is a feat, an achievement that is impossible to read without coming away shaken, possibly changed. All are profoundly researched and told in elegant, stunning historical epic . . great, heartbreaking novels, full of action and superb characters and an unblinking humanity The entire chronicle unfolds like a mystical vision. We experience their world in such tremendous detail [and] come away with a sense of intimacy and a respect.

This is an easy, enjoyable read with a good pace and well-drawn characters. It's classed as adult fiction, but I didn't realise this when I was reading it and assumed it to be YA, because of the writing style and content. It could safely be given to older teenagers to learn a little about history in the Middle Ages in Britain.
