Samuelsen In An Oyster Shell – This was one of the better YA’s I have read in a long time, it’s a riveting story of a young teenager navigating life. I recommend it.The Pearls – My favorite thing about this book was the showing of a realistic teenager. I can’t stand when under-age people (is that the pc term?) are portrayed as having all this freedom and maturity that reflects the author not the character. Otte did really well in letting Lillie stand on her own two feet, and experience real teenage problems. I commend her for that.

Everything seemed in order. Except for her always missing-in-action father. She learned from so long ago not to hope for anything, any promise, from her dad.Despite the kinda slow pacing in the story, I enjoyed reading this a lot and have succumbed to the sighs and laughters and shocks that this book had in store for readers. Lillie, I think, is no-nonsense character, a typical teenager, a normal kid who longed for her father's attention. When she (and I) finally discovered the truth though, it felt like a basin of water was poured over my head. I understood her pain, distraught, confusion, longing and realization. I understood her innermost emotions.I strongly believe that when you choose an action, you also choose the consequences of that action. Lillie learned this the hard way. She indeed had evolved and matured. She understood and accepted and let go. Her relationships with her mom, bestfriend and boyfriend respectively, proved to be worthy of keeping in the end.I admire Kristen Otte's writing. It is distinct, well-depicted, heart-rending and impassioned. I think Otte did a really great job of creating flawed characters and making them grow. I would love to read more of her books in the ext coming days.

I felt for Lillie so much. She is a frustrated sophomore dealing with issues typical of a teenager. Otte really brought out the angst of a high schooler. I wanted to smack Lillie and hug her at the same time. She brought out the mother and former teenager in me.Lucky for me, I like young adult basketball because there is a lot of it in the novel, not in a distracting way but a teenager everyday kind of life way. Some of the phrases/jargon, I didn't understand; however, it wasn't distracting.I was pleasantly surprised to find a tad of suspense throughout the book. While Lillie is trying to find out her father's secret, Otte sprinkles enough one-liners to make you doubt your initial thought. Maybe he's part of the CIA. Maybe he's a psychopath. Maybe he has a dual life. Maybe her mother and him are in on something secret together. I don't know, maybe it was just me but I liked it regardless.I love the best friend Rachel. You can see in this book that she has her head screwed on straight. She is a tremendous role model for Lillie and I really liked that aspect. Rachel didn't change in her convictions regardless of the situation. The first book in this series is about Rachel. Now, I want to read it.
