Yetunde is a series of stories that follows the every day life of 6 month old Yetunde as she's narrated African folktales by her mom Iya Yetunde whilst growing up in London. Iya Yetunde also tries to improve her Yoruba speaking ability, so we see a nice mish mash of Yoruba and English. The folktales are of West African origin. The book has been written in such a way that it can be enjoyed by both adults and children alike. Adults can read the book for their own enjoyment or as bedtime stories for kids ages 3-8 (even younger). Older children can read the book by themselves as it is also a suitable kids books ages 9-12. Each story has a moral lesson with colourful illustrations for early readers

A CHILDREN'S BOOK FOR EVERYONE - EVEN IF YOU DON'T HAVE CHILDREN By Amazon Customer This is so much more than just a ‘children’s book.’ It is an excellent look into both the mind and life of a baby. Yes, I wrote baby, and you need to read this book. It is well worth your time, and [now or later] your child’s time. The set-up: we are transported into a few days in the life of a baby, narrated by the baby herself. No, this is not like the “Look Who’s Talking” movies. This story is fun and realistic; the baby’s narration is age appropriate but interesting to adults; and the events depicted have probably occurred in every person’s life, when he or she was a child. To add to the story’s attraction to children [and also to adults], each chapter includes an interesting parable. This does not detract from the flow of the narration; in fact, these simple tales add to the story’s value to young children and provide an excellent segue from one chapter to the next.To add to the realism, interspersed with the mostly English narration, the baby’s mother speaks the Yoruba language [an African language]. Personally, I do not know this language, and did not try to translate it. However, translating it is not important. The use of the language is minimal; its use does not affect the flow or meaning of the narration; and although people who can read the language may receive additional meanings from the story, this is not a detriment to non-speakers. Instead, its sparse use adds authenticity to the story, and adds a flavor not normally found in children’s books. All in all, this book is an excellent read for children, whether read to a child by an adult or read by the child himself/herself. And in a weird but good way, it’s also an excellent treatise for adults on what a baby might be thinking. Believe it or now, you’ll probably be a better parent for reading this story.Five stars. Read it to your child, now. If you don’t have a child, read it for yourself.

I wish there had been more illustrations to go along with the story but the lack of them did not take away from the quality of the book. The only thing I struggled with is the language used in parts of the book, it wasn't translated so I wasn't sure what the character was saying. However the story flows enough that you can get the main idea of what the character were saying without knowing the exact words. Fun and cute and an easy read, I would defiantly recommend :)Ana Elise Meyer

Each chapter is a day in the life of Yetunde and at the end of the chapter, her mother tells her a bedtime story with a moral to it. This was a fresh approach to the telling of life's first lessons. I especially enjoyed the baby's view on the everyday things we do, and found myself looking forward to the end of the chapter for the bedtime story. A very entertaining book that would make perfect bedtime story or a fun read for a young child. (read on Kindle Unlimited)

Lethal Lore contains the broken remnants of folk tales, recast in blood. Four harmless legends--the jackalope, the doppelgänger, the lucky penny, the Green Children of Woolpit--become the stuff of nightmares in this collection. From campy horror to eerie gothic to nail-biting contemporary, each short story delivers a chill of a different kind. For fans of Twilight Zone and light horror (this isn't slasher gore). "Simple Math" A mathematician on the brink of suicide meets his doppelgänger, doubling his troubles. "Killer Jack" A naïve Cajun bags more than he bargained for during a jackalope hunt. "Hell Cent" Good luck for one person is bad luck for another, as The Professor soon learns. "The Bells of Bury St. Edmunds" A servant girl exacts revenge after her brother's death, unleashing terror on her medieval town. BONUS CONTENT: Explore the lore with facts, links, and illustrations. I could easily see them on as 'Twilight Zone" episodes. Monica's writing style is very straightforward and evocative. Her writing gives your imagination enough room to see the "Movie in your head". Of the 4 stories, my favorite was the "The Bells of Bury St. Edmunds" I had heard of the Green Children of Woolpit and it was cool to see the legend given a fresh take. I also liked how at the end of each story, she gave some background on the inspiration for each story. It was cool to see how she took the inspiration and transformed it into her original stories. The stories are fairly short and great for when you have a few moments to kill (Like waiting at the Doctor's office!).I was provided a copy of this book from Story Cartel in exchange for an honest review

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Keep the lights on and the door locked! By valkyrie Monica Shaughnessy has written an excellent collection of horror stories. They would be classified as dread-inducing horror, not the slasher-horror.My favorite was the Bells (last story). It has a very gothic feel to it and a thrilling feeling of dread as the story unfolds. My second favorite was Killer Jack. The voice in this story is unique and makes the story. Beware of sweet Jackalopes.Simple Math is a good twisted, winding story to make you finish with an "oooohhhhhh."Finally, Hell Cent is probably the closest to a slasher-type horror story. Those who like crazy, this is your story!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Four good stories based on classic legends. By Amazon Customer This book is four shorter stories, perfect for reading in one day, or one sitting. My favorite two were the jackalope story, called Simple Math, and The Bells of Bury St. Edmunds. The other two stories are Killer Jack and Hell Cent. They are all well written, but the jackalope has long been a favored tale of mine. This one was creative and had a good ending. The Bells of Bury St. Edmunds was good enough to be its own entire book. I think I have become a fan of this author's books. I need to go read more of her books now.My copy came from Story Cartel in exchange for my honest review and nothing more.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Comfy Quick Read By Melanie Francisco Montana Marrenger is a strong female lead character and in Tanglewood she shines as she teams up with another equally feisty female, Maggie Maguire. Together they solve the mystery of what happened to Maggie’s father in 1994. A nice little tale, very art heist movie meets your bread and butter procedural. Griffith has a knack of merging the cosy mystery with procedurals in a very compelling way. This story is a quick read, the first, second and third time. And you will want three reads just because you won’t want to leave these people behind. And I for one can’t wait to read the next one.

By Chime Braithwaite When he read the poetry, it seemed he was reading so fast that - before I could think about what he was saying he said something else. You should get this if you're not really interested in the entertainment value over just listening to some Poe and visualising his stories. It's "generic," yet good listening.

An Uncertain Choice, by Jody Hedlund

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—Lady Rosemarie Montfort was orphaned at age 14. Since that day, she has ruled her family's lands with the help of the abbot and has mentally prepared herself to enter the convent on her upcoming 18th birthday, in accordance with her parents' wishes and the Ancient Vow. The arrival of the Duke of Rivenshire, a family friend, throws all of Rosemarie's plans into disarray when he announces that there may be an exception to the Vow. If Rosemarie can fall in love and marry before her birthday—just four weeks away—she could continue to live among her people and be an active ruler rather than cloistered behind walls. In order to help Rosemarie make her choice, the duke has brought along three young knights to woo her and help her find true love. Although Rosemarie hesitates to deviate from her plan, she goes against the abbot's wishes and decides to give love a chance. But when potentially deadly accidents befall the knights competing for her affections, Rosemarie has to decide if love is worth the risk. There are few surprises in this historical fiction for teens. Savvy readers will know from the get-go who the villain is and which knight will win Rosemarie's hand. This book doesn't shy away from the less pretty parts of medieval times, such as illness, disease, poverty, and criminal torture. VERDICT A predictable historical romance for teens who believe in true love. An additional purchase.—Heather Webb, Worthington Libraries, OH

Review Jody Hedlund, historical fiction author, pens her first young adult novel by telling the story of a fourteenth-century young woman faced with a life-altering decision. In An Uncertain Choice, Lady Rosemarie is one month short of her eighteenth birthday–the day she goes into the convent to fulfill her parents’ vow. She found out about the vow when her parents died from the Plague four years earlier, so she has had time to prepare for life in the convent. Rosemarie thinks she will still be able to rule her people from behind the convent walls. Her late father’s close friend, the Duke of Rivenshire, arrives with three handsome knights to tell her that she has another choice–to marry before midnight on her birthday, releasing her from the vow. After being on her own, Rosemarie is torn between the possibility of marriage and entering the convent. What is God’s plan for her? As the knights compete to win her heart, someone is sabotaging the competition. One of the knights appears to be guilty, but is he? Should she marry or go to the convent? She has only one month to make the correct choice. As always, Hedlund brings a story with descriptive narrative, believable plot, and endearing characters, making it an enjoyable read–except, perhaps, for the torture endured by prisoners. An Uncertain Choice can easily be read by adults and teens alike. Fans of Lisa Bergren’s River of Time series and Melanie Dickerson’s medieval young adult books will also enjoy Hedlund’s medieval trilogy. Readers may want to read Hedlund’s novella, The Vow (available only in ebook format), a prequel to An Uncertain Choice. Recommended for teen collections in public libraries and school libraries. (Christian Library Journal)

About the Author Jody Hedlund is the author of over a dozen novels, including "Love Unexpected", "Captured by Love", "Unending Devotion", "The Preacher's Bride", and "A Noble Groom", winner of the 2014 Carol Award for historical romance. She received a bachelor's degree from Taylor University and a master's from the University of Wisconsin, both in social work. She lives in Michigan with her husband and five children. She loves hearing from readers on Facebook and on her blog at www.jodyhedlund.com.

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Light, Clean Romance By Jaidis Shaw Lady Rosemarie’s parents made a promise to the church when she was born. On her eighteen birthday, she will take her sacred vows and live her life as a nun. Rosemarie didn’t know of the promise until the death of her parents and after getting over the shock, came to terms with her future. Her life is turned upside down when a month until her birthday, an exception to the vow is found. If she finds true love and marries before midnight on her eighteenth birthday, she can live a normal life. She begins questioning everything she thought when three mysterious and handsome suitors are vying for her attention. Not only is she confused in matters of the heart, but her people are dying from illness and she wonders how she can best serve her people. Should she dedicate her life to the church, where she can focus more on her charitable deeds, or should she open her heart and try to find love?An Uncertain Choice was a quick and easy read. It flowed nicely and I loved the romance aspect. I’m a sucker for sappy love and cheesy pick-up lines so I enjoyed reading this book. Lady Rosemarie is a flawed character. At times she is a strong character who is putting her people above everything else. Other times we are reminded that she is just a teenager and may not be ready for the responsibility that she was forced to take when her parents died. My only complaint was that there was little mystery as to who was behind the shenanigans that occurred during the book. I wish there had been a little more suspense but rather it was all laid out perfectly so I knew what to expect. If you are looking for a light, clean romance, this will do the trick.I was provided a copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

By Melanie I read the prequel novella, The Vow, prior to An Uncertain Choice and I definitely recommend reading it first. It gives a lot of insight into the characters and backstory. An Uncertain Choice is Jody Hedlund's first YA novel and a really good one! I enjoyed the characters (my favorite was Sir Derrick!) and the mystery in the book. I also loved all the knights and how they tried to woo Rosemarie. I did feel that at times the story was a little predictable, but there were also some surprising twists, so it evened out for me. ;)I didn't expect the book to end the way it did -- with such a cliffhanger -- and it makes me eager to pick up the next book when it releases. I have to know what happens next!!Overall, a good story with an almost fairytale feel. If you enjoy medieval novels and YA fiction, I think you'll like this one.*Disclosure of Material Connection: I received one or more of the products or services mentioned above for free in the hope that I would mention/review it on my blog. By Amanda Marie I was surprised how much I liked this book. Lady Rosemarie Montfort is an almost 18 year old heiress of Ashby. After her parents’ death of the plague four years ago, Rosemarie learned of a vow they made before her birth: At the age of eighteen she would enter the convent. That is only one month away. Then the Duke of Rivenshire, Rosemarie’s godfather, arrives with some interesting news. There is an exception to the vow Rosemarie’s parents made: If she falls in love and marries before midnight on her eighteenth birthday, she does not need to enter the convent. Along with delivering this news, the Duke also brings three knights who will attempt to win her heart: Sir Collin Goodrich, Sir Bennet Windsor, and Sir Derrick Harding.Rosemarie agrees to the Duke’s plan to allow the three knights to court her and, if she happens to fall in love, marry one of the them. This is all to the dismay of Rosemarie’s long-time advisor, Abbot Francis Michael. The story is a clean Christian romance (it is Christian fiction) with some really nice twists. Sure, I could pretty much guess who Rosemarie was going to fall in love with but some of the twists were really surprising, especially near the end.The world-building, however, wasn’t there. We have no idea of the size of the village by Rosemarie’s castle. We know there are the poor that Rosemarie cares for, a town square, the estate of the sheriff, the castle, and the convent. That is about it. Rosemarie is said to the love the poor and she goes to help them bringing food and medicine. But we really don’t know anything about them as people. We don’t even know the names of any of them. I just wanted to know more, I guess. This is a nice addition to the Christian Young Adult genre. A sweet story of a young lady faced with a decision that will impact the rest of her life.I received this book for free from the publisher via NetGalley for review consideration. This in no way affects my opinion of the title or the content of this review. This review first appeared at Orandi et Legendi (catholicamanda.com).

I never knew that your childhood was like this but I am extremely happy that are grandmother's spirit was there to protect you. I literally got chills when you mentioned her in a blue dress because I remember her in that because I spent a lot of time with her and I was 5 when she passed. I still remember how her house looked and how it always felt so safe and peaceful. She was an amazing person with a beautiful spirit and I'm truly happy that she was there by your side through it all!!!!

I would've liked to see some dialogue and character interaction, however, I know that will be in the novel. The presence of black magic reminds me of Alison Hobbs & makes me very curious to see what other details will be added to the full novel.

The sense of foreboding came out of nowhere. It was so strong that I couldn't even speak at first. My eyes lifted in horror to Blair's smiling face. "Death stalks you tonight," I warned. "Stay inside your house. Don't go out for anything." Clarissa was just pretending to be a fortune teller for the school carnival until she made an eerie prediction of danger that came true. Damien survived the vicious attack but began to exhibit strange behavior. Werewolf romance

WOULD YOU TRAVEL BACK IN TIME? A twenty-first century teacher. An eighteenth century sea captain. A journey that will bring them together, but for how long? "It's just a dream," Melissa Smith whispers as Captain Isaiah Reed offers to escort her to his cabin. The man, ruggedly handsome and dressed as though he's stepped off the set of an American Revolutionary War movie, would be over two hundred years old if he were real, which he is not. As enticing as the vision before her appears, Melissa knows with certainty that she lives in the twenty-first century. She is chaperoning her sixth-grade class as they sail aboard the schooner Shenandoah around the island of Martha's Vineyard. Her students are not visiting Plimoth Plantation, or the Boston Tea Party Museum, or the Concord Bridge reenactment. Therefore, she is dreaming. Isaiah Reed will vanish. She will wake up. How then does the touch of Isaiah's hand send bolts of electricity through her veins and ignite a fire in her heart the likes of which she's never felt before? How can a dream lasts for weeks on end? And if she's not dreaming, then Melissa's traveled back in time. Improbable. Illogical. Impossible. But here she is in 1770, uncertain how she arrived, when she'll go home, or if her heart could bare to be parted from Captain Isaiah Reed. As war looms on the horizon, only time will tell if Melissa is given a chance at life and love with Isaiah, or if she'll be swept forward once again to her previous life.

I anxiously awaited the release of Shenandoah Dreams just as much as I did Shenandoah Crossings and Shenandoah Nights and the book did not disappoint! I loved it just as much as I did the first two. The author, Lisa Belcastro, has such a great way of making you feel like you are there living the story. I could smell the ocean breeze and felt like I was on the ship. I love reading books where you connect with the characters to the point that you are disappointed when you finish the book because you feel like you have lost your friends and want to know what it going on in their world. She seamlessly brought you from the past to the present and back again and I felt this book really tied all three books together. If you want a great book to sit down and get lost in, this book (and the entire series) are the book(s) for you! I just ordered the fourth Shenandoah book, A Shenandoah Christmas, and cannot wait to get it!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. If you like time travel By E. Lopez Shenandoah DreamsAn absolutely delightful read. If you like time travel, Colonial America, sailing, and/or godly romance. GET THIS BOOK. It absorbed me from start to finish--got to sleep pretty late for a couple of nights. Lisa Belcastro takes the reader seamlessly back and forth from the present to the past and makes each engrossing. Her faith and her character's faith is not an "add in" but an integral part of the story. She also had me frequently laughing aloud as her character came to terms with what was real and what was not. This is actually the third in a 3-book series but stands well alone. In some ways I'm glad I read this one first. The only problem I found was that I had to immediately buy books 1 and 2, and I'm delving into those pretty quickly.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Take a trip back in time.... By Jalynn Patterson My Review: Time travel isn't possible but if it were, I would prefer to go somewhere throughout history. Maybe to somewhere I had only read about. The Civil War era would be an exciting place, for sure. Not on the actual battlefield but something close to it would work. In Shenandoah Dreams the main character, Melissa gets her chance to travel back in time when she chaperones her class on a educational sail around Martha's vineyard. Too me it would be terrifying to wake up to see a man standing there in front of me dressed on colonial style clothing. I would keep screaming and screaming until my head popped off. The boat that her and the class get to take on their trip seems best described as "haunted" to me. She thinks she is dreaming when she wakes to realize something just isn't quite right. But with all young ladies in these type of stories there is a love interest and his name is Isaiah. Because the incredibly handsome Isaiah, Melissa finds herself not wanting to leave and go back to her century. I read a lot of historical romances and seeing the cover it seems a bit misleading, because it doesn't look like what you might expect. At first because of this, I wasn't jumping to read the book. To me the cover can actual make or break if I want to read it or not.But this historical romance will surprise you!**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from CFBA.

From the Inside Flap Book 8 of L. Frank Baum's immortal OZ books, in which Ozma is lost -- as are all the known magical instruments in Oz -- and how the search party of Dorothy, the Wizard and other loyal friends embarks upon bizarre adventures and meets such strange creatures as the Frogman and the Lavender Bear while trying to find her.

About the Author Lyman Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 – May 6, 1919), better known by his pen name L. Frank Baum, was an American author chiefly known for his children's books, particularly The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. He wrote thirteen novel sequels, nine other fantasy novels, and a host of other works (55 novels in total, plus four "lost works", 83 short stories, over 200 poems, an unknown number of scripts, and many miscellaneous writings), and made numerous attempts to bring his works to the stage and screen. His works anticipated such century-later commonplaces as television, augmented reality, laptop computers (The Master Key), wireless telephones (Tik-Tok of Oz), women in high risk, action-heavy occupations (Mary Louise in the Country), and the ubiquity of advertising on clothing (Aunt Jane's Nieces at Work). Baum's avowed intentions with the Oz books, and other fairy tales, was to re-tell tales such as are found in the works of the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen; make them in an American vein, update them, avoid stereotypical characters such as dwarfs or genies, and remove the association of violence and moral teachings. Although the first books contained a fair amount of violence, it decreased with the series; in The Emerald City of Oz, Ozma objected to doing violence even to the Nomes who threaten Oz with invasion. His introduction is often cited as the beginnings of the sanitization of children's stories, although he did not do a great deal more than eliminate harsh moral lessons. His stories still include decapitations, eye removals, maimings of all kinds, and other violent acts, but the tone is very different from Grimm or Andersen. Baum was born in Chittenango, New York, in 1856, into a devout Methodist family. He had German, Scots-Irish, and English ancestry, and was the seventh of nine children of Cynthia Ann (née Stanton) and Benjamin Ward Baum, only five of whom survived into adulthood. "Lyman" is the name of his father's brother, but he always disliked it and preferred his middle name, "Frank". On May 5, 1919, Baum suffered a stroke. The following day he slipped into a coma but briefly awoke and spoke his last words to his wife, "Now we can cross the Shifting Sands." Frank died on May 6, 1919. He was buried in Glendale's Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. His final Oz book, Glinda of Oz, was published on July 10, 1920, a year after his death. The Oz series continued long after his death by other authors, who wrote an additional nineteen Oz books.

Oz All-Stars By Blake Petit Like the previous Oz book, "Rinkitink in Oz," this was an outing by Baum that scores by deviating a bit from the standard Oz formula. The characters in the book are on a journey, as usual, but instead of trying to get to the Emerald City, the characters are departing that city to find the missing Princess Ozma who, along with most of the powerful magical objects in Oz, has vanished. Furthermore, Baum puts together one of the largest primary casts ever in an Oz book, including Dorothy and Toto, the Wizard, the Patchwork Girl, the Sawhorse, the Cowardly Lion, Betsy Bobbin and Hank, Trot and Button-Bright and the Woozy, as well as adding the Frogman, Cayke the Cookie Cook and the Big Lavender Bear and the Little Pink Bear. While it's nice to see to many characters, it does hurt the book somewhat -- it shows really how superfluous Besty and Trot are with Dorothy around, and it includes a bizarre little subplot with Toto that doesn't really add much. Furthermore, the ending is really syrupy and saccharine, even for an Oz book. The addition of the Frogman is a major plus, though -- he is easily the most entertaining new character added to the series since Scraps the Patchwork Girl, and it was nice to have a book that for once didn't rely on the old villains like the Nome King or the old deus ex machina of Ozma's magic picture and Glinda's magic book. In fact, I kind of wish those two items had stayed lost -- other Oz books rely on them entirely too much for their resolution.

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. A Lost Princess By A Customer The Lost Princess of Oz is one of L. Frank Baum's most imaginative books. It begins with a serious problem, Ozma's disappearance, and with many of the favorite characters. Yet in a parallel story, an early chapter takes us to the Winkie Country and introduces us to some delightful new characters, The Frogman and Cayke the Cookie Cook. We know that Cayke's stolen magic dishpan is somehow related to Ozma's disappearance.I love the role that Scraps, the Patchwork Girl, plays in this book. We meet some whimsical new villages and the beings who inhabit them. We pay attention to small details that are nonetheless important to those most affected by them, such as Toto's missing growl. Illusions are turned upside down and inside out, making us think. It's a delightful journey, all in all, one that I highly recommend.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Great fun to read By F. Orion Pozo Tik-Tok of Oz by L. Frank Baum (Books of Wonder edition)Tik-Tok of Oz is a delightful book with an interesting story of how it came to be. A small Editor's Note by Peter Glassman on page 10 of this book tells the story. There had been two successful stage plays based on the first two Oz books and Baum wanted to write a play based on the third, Ozma of Oz. However, he found out he couldn't use many of the characters because he had already sold the stage rights to them. He took the plot of the third book and changed Dorothy and Ozma into two new characters Betsy Bobbin and Queen Ann Soforth. Then he used the popular Shaggy Man who was introduced in The Road to Oz and changed many of the incidents in the story to create a new script for the stage that he called The Tik-Tok Man of Oz. The play was a success so he then rewrote it into this novel. If you have read Ozma of Oz, you will indeed see the similarities. Once again an army of one soldier and many officers is led by a girl leader in an attack against the Nome King. This time it is Queen Ann Soforth from the smallest and poorest kingdom in Oz. She is young and tired of her tiny kingdom and wants to seek adventure. When her sister jokingly suggests that Ann raise an army and conquer Oz, Ann likes the idea. She convinces all but one of the eighteen men of her kingdom to join her army and they set out. However, the sorceress Glinda, learns of her plans and magically transports Ann and her army across the Deadly Desert and out of Oz entirely.Meanwhile Betsy Bobbin, like Dorothy in Ozma of Oz, is lost at sea in a storm with her companion Hank the Mule. They are cast up on shore of the Rose Kingdom where they meet up with the Rose Princess, the Shaggy Man and Polychrome, the Rainbow's daughter. This group goes on a quest with the Shaggy Man who is seeking his lost brother, a prisoner of the Nome King. They meet up with Queen Ann's army and Tik-Tok. This large group decides to go in search of the Nome King together.Their quest leads them to the fairy kingdom of the great Jinjin, Tititi-Hoochoo where they meet a young dragon named Quox. Their encounter with the Nome King is terribly amusing and their search for the Shaggy Man's brother has a remarkable outcome. What starts out as a reworking of another story takes on a life of its own to become an entertaining and amusing story. The John R. Neill illustrations are wonderful and there are 12 full-page color plates. The end papers present the first published map of the land of Oz.

Review Completed on:01/19/2015Review Rating:5 stars! Reviewed By Patricia Day for Readers' FavoriteThe story will capture your attention and you might even find it impossible to put the book aside. I could not. Her pain is described with such skill that you will feel involved in her immense struggle. Her lucky escape will keep you on the edge of your seat. A.K. Stauber's writing is beautiful. The story draws you in immediately and refuses to let you go. By the end of the book I felt I had been running alongside Anna.  I absolutely loved this book, despite its sad content. Heather Osborne       5 Stars!Remembrance: Part I: A Time for War by A.K. Stauber is the first installment in a gripping series about survival during the Holocaust. As an avid reader and writer of things surrounding the Holocaust, I found it to be very emotional as well as mostly historically accurate, a difficult thing to do when there are so many different accounts of events during the war. readersfavorite.com/book-review/remembranceCheryl E. Rodriguez           4 Stars!Remembrance: A Time for War by A.K. Stauber. It chronicles the war-torn life of her protagonist's character. The novel opens with a shocking sequence, grabbing you from the beginning. Baited and hooked you are held captive, feeling the drama of the conflict as it unfolds. Keeping you on pins and needles, the book is hard to put down. The plot moves quickly from one event to the next. Anticipation turns to expectation, wondering what's going to happen next.

From the Author Over the past twenty plus years I have read numerous books on the subject of the Holocaust- from memoir to fictional to historical texts. I have listened to personal accounts (on video), visited the concentration camp Dachau, and watched just about every movie that was made on the subject. Why? Since reading Anne Frank as a young girl, I became obsessed with the Holocaust and wanted to learn everything I could about it.  Since then it has been put into my heart to write a book on the subject. I brushed up on my research, took variations of the experiences of many and rolled them up into one person.  I took great care to be as accurate as possible- not just about the historical events, but the human experience. I hope I have not failed in that.

About the Author A.K. Stauber lives in Central Minnesota with her family and four dogs, including a sweet Pitbull who "adopted" her family. She has been writing stories since the age of thirteen, as well as dabbling in poetry.  Some of her favorite authors include Kristin Hannah, Stephanie Meyer, Dean Koontz and V.C. Andrews (early works). Besides writing, she enjoys drawing, painting, reading and spending time with family.

Frankel The main strength of this book is the intense narrative focused on the horrific experiences of the Jewish female protagonist in Poland during World War II. For the most part, Anna is very credible. She is strong yet vulnerable, though events harden her over time.I have no doubt that Stauber studied the history of the Holocaust, yet this book betrays her lack of knowledge of the Hasidic Jewish community. I believe that it was an error of judgment to call any of these characters Hasidic. They should have been urban Jews from Warsaw or Krakow who were somewhat assimilated. Genuinely Hasidic characters would have had difficulties with the events of this storyline that weren't even mentioned once in the novel. The kosher diet of all Orthodox Jews is one prominent example. Hasidic characters would have given some thought to the lack of availability of kosher food in their circumstances, and they would have made a decision about it. The inaccuracies in the portrayal of these characters begin with their names which should be either Hebrew or Yiddish. A more minor nomenclature error is that the characters refer to a Hasidic man's strands of ringlets as "payot". That is Sephardic Hebrew. These characters were Ashkenazic Jews who would have spoken Ashkenazic Hebrew. The ringlet strands would have been "payas". This may seem inconsequential, but any reader who is familiar with the cultural context would see that mistake as a reminder of the author's shortcomings in this area. More importantly, the background of Pawel is riddled with contradictions. The explanation for these contradictions is unworkable. A Hasidic family would never have united in marriage with a family without the proper religious background. Arranged marriages have always been seen as a commitment between families rather than individuals. A Hasidic family would only consider someone from a similar type of family. This would be the most important criterion for a matchmaker in that community. It just wouldn't have happened. On the other hand, the cover of Remembrance Part I is worthy of praise. It has an impact. The sky is dominated by the Star of David surrounded by flames and dripping blood. I would call it a powerful artistic metaphor. The cover isn't such an asset in the black and white version that appears on my Kindle. Without the colors it doesn't make so strong a statement. I would also like to point out that the author's name is greyed out and nearly disappears in that version. Unfortunately, the favorable impression made by the cover in full color is ruined by the reader's first encounter with the text which starts with a misspelling. This is an error that should have been caught and fixed. I can't even type that misspelling in Word without seeing it underlined in red. It's the only misspelling in the entire book, but a reader who sees "Prolouge" would have no way of knowing that. Much later in the book Polish appears un-capitalized twice, but these slipups are much less noticeable. Typographical errors that appear in the beginning of a book have a negative influence on readers. They may even decide to stop reading it.The Hasidic cultural background of certain characters will presumably recede and become less important in future volumes, but I experienced the inconsistent presentation of this background as a significant flaw in this book. A consultant who is educated in all the rich complexities of Hasidic Jewish life would have been helpful.

After everyone in her village was brutally murdered as she watched from the woods, including her own family, she tries to seek refuge but the Germans always catch up to her. It seems like everyone she encounters is at risk or out to report her, and she isn’t sure how long she will survive.Remembrance is book one of the Remembrance series and introduces Anna, a Jewish girl in Poland who isn’t so sure God is actually looking out for her. She has good reason to doubt her faith, since God didn’t seem to protect her family from being murdered by Nazis, and worse He didn’t give her the strength to protect them, not even her 4 year old brother, which will haunt her for the rest of her life. It seems obvious that eventually the Nazis will catch up to her, but what she will do in the mean time to survive will make everyone reading realize how comfortable and wealthy we are. Anna is hungry, cold, hiding in pits and walls, and never quite sure who she can trust, even fellow Jews. I am a big fan of historical fiction in general, and so far this seems well researched and engaging. Of course the Holocaust is undeniably fascinating, as you can’t help but put yourself in the shoes of both the attacked and attackers and wonder where you would stand. I think that is part of the appeal of Anna; while she has no choice due to her heritage, she still questions her own morality and if she really is any better than the Nazis as she tries to survive. I hope to see more of Anna’s story, and like everyone else hopes she survives long enough to tell her story.

After the Germans devastated fifteen year old Anna’s town she is forced to go on the run and ends up meeting another young Jew named Pawel. Together, they hide from the Germans, knowing that to be discovered would bring certain death. This is a very intense story and was hard to read at times knowing things like this actually happened. The author has done a great job of portraying life for Polish Jews during this time period and the while book is very realistic. This story hit close to home for me since some of my partner’s family experienced some of the same things experienced by characters in the novel. The character of Anna matures from an innocent fifteen year old to a young woman who is slowly finding her hard edge. I truly loved this book although the cliff hanger at the end of the book was frustrating because now I have to wait for part two in the series. I read this on my ereader and it formatted well. The cover was not particularly enticing but the story was amazing.
