An Uncertain Choice, by Jody Hedlund

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—Lady Rosemarie Montfort was orphaned at age 14. Since that day, she has ruled her family's lands with the help of the abbot and has mentally prepared herself to enter the convent on her upcoming 18th birthday, in accordance with her parents' wishes and the Ancient Vow. The arrival of the Duke of Rivenshire, a family friend, throws all of Rosemarie's plans into disarray when he announces that there may be an exception to the Vow. If Rosemarie can fall in love and marry before her birthday—just four weeks away—she could continue to live among her people and be an active ruler rather than cloistered behind walls. In order to help Rosemarie make her choice, the duke has brought along three young knights to woo her and help her find true love. Although Rosemarie hesitates to deviate from her plan, she goes against the abbot's wishes and decides to give love a chance. But when potentially deadly accidents befall the knights competing for her affections, Rosemarie has to decide if love is worth the risk. There are few surprises in this historical fiction for teens. Savvy readers will know from the get-go who the villain is and which knight will win Rosemarie's hand. This book doesn't shy away from the less pretty parts of medieval times, such as illness, disease, poverty, and criminal torture. VERDICT A predictable historical romance for teens who believe in true love. An additional purchase.—Heather Webb, Worthington Libraries, OH

Review Jody Hedlund, historical fiction author, pens her first young adult novel by telling the story of a fourteenth-century young woman faced with a life-altering decision. In An Uncertain Choice, Lady Rosemarie is one month short of her eighteenth birthday–the day she goes into the convent to fulfill her parents’ vow. She found out about the vow when her parents died from the Plague four years earlier, so she has had time to prepare for life in the convent. Rosemarie thinks she will still be able to rule her people from behind the convent walls. Her late father’s close friend, the Duke of Rivenshire, arrives with three handsome knights to tell her that she has another choice–to marry before midnight on her birthday, releasing her from the vow. After being on her own, Rosemarie is torn between the possibility of marriage and entering the convent. What is God’s plan for her? As the knights compete to win her heart, someone is sabotaging the competition. One of the knights appears to be guilty, but is he? Should she marry or go to the convent? She has only one month to make the correct choice. As always, Hedlund brings a story with descriptive narrative, believable plot, and endearing characters, making it an enjoyable read–except, perhaps, for the torture endured by prisoners. An Uncertain Choice can easily be read by adults and teens alike. Fans of Lisa Bergren’s River of Time series and Melanie Dickerson’s medieval young adult books will also enjoy Hedlund’s medieval trilogy. Readers may want to read Hedlund’s novella, The Vow (available only in ebook format), a prequel to An Uncertain Choice. Recommended for teen collections in public libraries and school libraries. (Christian Library Journal)

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Light, Clean Romance By Jaidis Shaw Lady Rosemarie’s parents made a promise to the church when she was born. On her eighteen birthday, she will take her sacred vows and live her life as a nun. Rosemarie didn’t know of the promise until the death of her parents and after getting over the shock, came to terms with her future. Her life is turned upside down when a month until her birthday, an exception to the vow is found. If she finds true love and marries before midnight on her eighteenth birthday, she can live a normal life. She begins questioning everything she thought when three mysterious and handsome suitors are vying for her attention. Not only is she confused in matters of the heart, but her people are dying from illness and she wonders how she can best serve her people. Should she dedicate her life to the church, where she can focus more on her charitable deeds, or should she open her heart and try to find love?An Uncertain Choice was a quick and easy read. It flowed nicely and I loved the romance aspect. I’m a sucker for sappy love and cheesy pick-up lines so I enjoyed reading this book. Lady Rosemarie is a flawed character. At times she is a strong character who is putting her people above everything else. Other times we are reminded that she is just a teenager and may not be ready for the responsibility that she was forced to take when her parents died. My only complaint was that there was little mystery as to who was behind the shenanigans that occurred during the book. I wish there had been a little more suspense but rather it was all laid out perfectly so I knew what to expect. If you are looking for a light, clean romance, this will do the trick.I was provided a copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. I didn't expect the book to end the way it did -- with such a cliffhanger!! By Melanie I read the prequel novella, The Vow, prior to An Uncertain Choice and I definitely recommend reading it first. It gives a lot of insight into the characters and backstory. An Uncertain Choice is Jody Hedlund's first YA novel and a really good one! I enjoyed the characters (my favorite was Sir Derrick!) and the mystery in the book. I also loved all the knights and how they tried to woo Rosemarie. I did feel that at times the story was a little predictable, but there were also some surprising twists, so it evened out for me. ;)I didn't expect the book to end the way it did -- with such a cliffhanger -- and it makes me eager to pick up the next book when it releases. I have to know what happens next!!Overall, a good story with an almost fairytale feel. If you enjoy medieval novels and YA fiction, I think you'll like this one.*Disclosure of Material Connection: I received one or more of the products or services mentioned above for free in the hope that I would mention/review it on my blog. 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A sweet story of a young lady faced with a decision that will impact the rest of her life. By Amanda Marie I was surprised how much I liked this book. Lady Rosemarie Montfort is an almost 18 year old heiress of Ashby. After her parents’ death of the plague four years ago, Rosemarie learned of a vow they made before her birth: At the age of eighteen she would enter the convent. That is only one month away. Then the Duke of Rivenshire, Rosemarie’s godfather, arrives with some interesting news. There is an exception to the vow Rosemarie’s parents made: If she falls in love and marries before midnight on her eighteenth birthday, she does not need to enter the convent. Along with delivering this news, the Duke also brings three knights who will attempt to win her heart: Sir Collin Goodrich, Sir Bennet Windsor, and Sir Derrick Harding.Rosemarie agrees to the Duke’s plan to allow the three knights to court her and, if she happens to fall in love, marry one of the them. This is all to the dismay of Rosemarie’s long-time advisor, Abbot Francis Michael. The story is a clean Christian romance (it is Christian fiction) with some really nice twists. Sure, I could pretty much guess who Rosemarie was going to fall in love with but some of the twists were really surprising, especially near the end.The world-building, however, wasn’t there. We have no idea of the size of the village by Rosemarie’s castle. We know there are the poor that Rosemarie cares for, a town square, the estate of the sheriff, the castle, and the convent. That is about it. Rosemarie is said to the love the poor and she goes to help them bringing food and medicine. But we really don’t know anything about them as people. We don’t even know the names of any of them. I just wanted to know more, I guess. This is a nice addition to the Christian Young Adult genre. A sweet story of a young lady faced with a decision that will impact the rest of her life.I received this book for free from the publisher via NetGalley for review consideration. This in no way affects my opinion of the title or the content of this review. This review first appeared at Orandi et Legendi (catholicamanda.com).
