I am sad that it is over, but at least I got two extra books when I thought it was ending after book 6. I love reading about Kara, David, Jenny and Peter. Their characters are very well characterized. I have grown an emotional connection to these characters. I am glad Kara and David got to live their normal lives. And I am super glad that Mr. Patterson was not gone forever that would have made me very sad if he was.

A mastery of writing to keep the focus on the storyline. Kim Richardson did an excellent job of keeping the reader in the story. I can't wait to read her next series

Do not look at reviews that will spoil this book for you. You have to read it for yourself. Form you own opinions as to what is going on and commit to reading the last twenty percent of this book in one sitting.Now I am sure that others might have figured this book our earlier than I did, but I admit that there were parts that had me wondering; closer to confused, as to why certain characters were acting the way that they were, but I did not put all of the pieces together.There are two storylines going on here. You have wild Dara and the practical more reserved Nick, sisters that are close in age and closer in relationship that is until an accident that Nick cannot remember that leaves beautiful Dara scarred. Now the sisters are estranged and when Dara disappears on her birthday, Nick thinks that Dara is pretending. Nick can hear her in her bedroom, can see her getting on the bus, and knows that she is in the house, but she ignores her when Nick knocks on her door or calls out to her.Then you have nine-year-old Madeline Snow. She too has vanished but the story that her older sister tells is not adding up. Nick becomes obsessed with this missing child and knows that Dara too was hiding a secret before she too disappeared. Is it possible that Dara was involved in something and that is why they are both now missing?The mind field of teenage sisters is difficult at best, but when you add in a neighbor boy that both girls become involved with, devastation is bound to occur. The book weaves the sisters’ story from flashbacks to present day leaving the reader fixated on who is talking and from which timeframe it is occurring so they can put the puzzle pieces together.To say that this book is edgy and leaves the reader bewildered is an understatement. The final truth of this book will completely blow the reader away. An out of left field sucker punch to the gut is how I felt when I finished. I did not put all of the pieces together. I had questioned a couple of actions of certain characters, but still, the light did not dawn. I loved this book. Loved how it completely blindsided me and yet I did not feel betrayed by the author. An awesome book that I highly recommend.

Must reading especially for teen girls who have sisters By Neal Reynolds Author Lauren Oliver paints well developed and absolutely readable characterizations. These characters are living and breathing teen sisters who capture the reader's heart from the outset. We get Nick's and Dara's point of view in alternating chapters peppered with blog posts. This is both a touching and feeling look at sibling relationships and a spellbinding mystery surrounding a young girl's disappearance. The author does take her time in getting to the real point of the story, but in doing so, she adds depth to the theme of sibling relationship.The ending is a bit of a shocker, but it's done smoothly and believably. I do give this a high recommendation.

She was in a bad car accident with her twin Dara and since then, everything seems to have crumbled away: the sisters' close friendship, Nick's other relationships, her sense of direction and self-worth. Her parents set her up to work at a local amusement park for the summer to get her out of herself, but nothing seems to be working. Meanwhile, a young girl goes missing from the backseat of her elder sister's parked car one hot summer night, and the local community is on edge.I am an intermittent fan of Lauren Oliver. I loved Before I Fall and liked Panic and Delirium, but was disappointed in the rest of the Delirium trilogy that followed. Vanishing Girls is Oliver in fine form as a portrayer of good teenage girls who find themselves in trouble, struggling with their own self-image and sense of reality. I have no problem with her writing, but with one of the basic premises and major plot-twist of the book, which I'm not able to go into here for fear of spoiling your read. (It just doesn't add up, looking back from the end of the book.)Other than that, Vanishing Girls is a thriller, an exciting read where Nick's increasing confusion and frenzy is finely portrayed through the language. My only problem except the plot-hinge is that we've seen these girls before: good sister and bad sister, smart sister and sexy sister, kind sister and catty sister. At the end, I'm not sure if the insight that they're both ironically feeling as if the other sister is the powerful one in the relationship is Nick's or Dana's? Has Nick matured and reached a new level of insight or not? What was the truth about their symbiotic relationship? I wish Oliver had stayed with and explored this question more, instead of focusing on the cheap thrills of building a plot-twist.

By crpgnut Story: Royal parents leave the city to raise son in isolation because of antagonism towards their bloodlines. The story is of Nathan, their son, and his friend/girlfriend Ava.Negatives: Typical coming of age story; this time with Superboy and his incredible powers and zero faults. Tragedy strikes and Superboy, who is a beginning mage, a master blacksmith, a journeyman warrior, an archer, and also only 14. Amazing, huh! Too bad the author isn't Super-editor. The book mixes up names, verb tense, and many other aspects of writing. The author writes as if he is 14 too, but his picture is of an adult.Positives: Nice flowing story, a quick read, like-able friends and despicable foes. Your little ones can read this and stay innocent, though I'd wait for an edited copy to come out. This is a new release and needs some finishing touches. Though I picked on the guy in the first paragraph, he shows a lot of promise too and I'll keep an eye on his stuff.

Davault Perhaps not as bad as my three stars indicate, but one thing that bothered me in both this and the sequel is how quickly everyone learned and did things. Making a sword in an afternoon, already sharp and deadly, but no real indication that anything but a forge was used. Becoming an accomplished swordsman in a few weeks, no problem. Unfortunately, it isn't just the main character that has this issue, it is most of the central characters, though for some this shows up in book two, rather than here. The writing often sounds like it take time for these characters to learn, but then you find out only a week or two has passed as the character goes from rank beginner to accomplished in whatever field. Magic is the fallback explanation, but I felt it was overused, and so distracted me from the story. If you don't have a problem with that quick learner aspect, then you will probably enjoy the book, as it is a decent story.One advisory for parents though, the book contains a good deal of death and while off-page, there is also rape, so this may not be best for younger readers, meaning I would advise parents to read first. As I said, it is off-page, and while the repercussions haven't been fully explored by book two, I honestly hope the author deals with them later.On a side note, book one seems better edited than book two. Book two seems to have many more grammar and usage mistakes than book one, perhaps the author was just rushed, or perhaps I didn't notice them in book one.Again, overall a decent story and as part of Kindle Unlimited I will probably continue on with the series as it is released.

Booth WARNING: SPOILERS THAT ARE VERY PREDICTABLETo Editing: The editing is miserable. You can read all the other comments detailing how painful it is to slog through the poor editing and try to figure out which character the author is talking about. No kidding, the author mixes up his characters' names from time to time, and that is highly annoying for me. Unfortunately that wasn't the deal-breaker.The Dialog: Listening to these characters talk to each other was painful. Read this aloud and you will soon realize that no-one talks like this. The dialog is very stilted and awkward and pulls you out of the story. The characters use absolutely no contractions and their speech patterns are all the same. None of them talk differently from each other. Let me Explain: I like to use the word 'Obnoxious' and my friend likes to use the word 'annoying.' So we each say the same general sentence differently.Me: That's obnoxious.My Friend: That's annoying.See the difference? That's one of the difference between an 'okay' or 'decent' author and the greats like Tolkien. Tolkien made his character's vocabulary and speech patterns differently. Some used slang and contractions, while others used flowery words and poetry to convey their thoughts. In this book, the vocabulary of each of the characters is basically the same.The Time-Frame Issues: The author obviously didn't put any research behind any of the skills these characters posses. They master tough crafts like archery and sword fighting in a few weeks. I have been shooting a bow since I was ten and I still miss my shots, while the main character mastered archery in just over/under a month. In addition to that, the time-frame of the hero forging items is very unrealistic, as he manages to complete what should have taken months. The facade of magic doesn't explain Sharon's sudden combat abilities, nor does 'natural skill,. so the author has nothing to fall back on. In addition to that, I feel the facade of 'it's magic' is used much too often in this book. Often used to write away the glaring time frame issues.The Main Character: The main character is... painful. He's supposed to be a young man struggling to find his purpose and lot in life. At least that's what the book wants you to think. He doesn't develop much after the killing of his parents, even though his abilities do. The side characters also suffer the same issue. He doesn't ever demonstrate psychological issues from the murder of his parents then the subsequent murder of his entire village. Or the bodies he has piling up. That either indicates that he's a sociopath or... poor writing(I believe it's the latter). This guy should be almost in shambles with everything that's happened, even if he manages to hold it together on the outside. Also, he never seems to ponder his parents or the villagers or the people he has killed death's. He should at least think of them a little or have nightmares about them, but no, he lives in perfect bliss. He should have Survivor's Guilt and a horde of other issues at this point. Either that or the main character is too dense to be having thoughts this high level. There are other flaws with the main character that you will pick up on in your reading of the book.The Side Characters: They don't exist. Seriously. They are very basic outlines that weren't fleshed out with details. They have very basic backstories and two-dimensional personalities with one dominant trait. In addition, the characters don't develop much. Their abilities develop, but not the actual characters themselves.Ava: Childhood friend who turns into lover. 'Smarter' than the hero but always needs to be rescued. Really hot. Becomes an amazing healers.Sharon: Another childhood friend, but is older than him. Flirtatious and suffers issues from her kidnapping. Really hot. Becomes an amazing warrior.Rose: Ava's spunky kid sister... yes that's all she is. She is used to provide 'comedic relief' with jokes that fall flat with the reader.Compliments: This is an AWESOME idea, but executed very poorly. Honestly, with a little more editing most of these issues could be fixed easily. The more complicated issue is fixing the characters, which will need a lot of love to come to life. Rose is the most flat character, so she will be the hardest to fix. Not only because I found some new authors to love, but the twist on these fairytales is genius!! I of course had my favorites, but there were all just so good! I’m impressed with the imagination and talent on how the stories were twisted, making me think “that was so much better than the original!” OK I am going to give a teeny tiny, abbreviated thought on each story ;) but I really enjoyed the writing style of all the authors, even if I didn’t like the story.**Unlocked by Wendy Owens ~ twist on Little Red Riding Hood- Very interesting! What a fun twist on this story. Exciting and full of action and suspense, and a twist I never saw coming!**Blayze & Ash by Jessica Sorenson ~ twist on Beauty and the Beast- FREAKING LOVED this story! Beauty & the Beast is my fav Disney story, so I was nervous for this one, but it was great! I really loved how it came together, so different yet the same. The ending made me tear up a tiny bit and left me warm and smiling.**The Little Mermaid by K.R. Wilburn- GREAT twist. Really enjoyed how the tables were turned in this version, and the ending was perfect. Twisty greatness ;)**Dance with Me by Tish Thawer ~ 12 Prncesses- This was a good story, honestly, the only version of this story I know is the Barbie version my 3 year old loves, and boy was this one different! This brings out a lot of different emotions and I really liked the way it ended.**Awakened by Kristen Strassel ~ Sleeping Beauty- Dark and twisted! Not at all what you would expect from a Sleeping Beauty story, I enjoyed it very much**Priceless by Sarah J. Pepper ~ Rumplestiltskin- I freaking LOVED this story!! The minute I finished it I went straight to my computer to stalk this author and get some more of her work, which left me very pleased after seeing her books! I am surprised how much I loved it, because this type of story isn’t really my genre, but yep, epic! And I can’t wait to read more by her!!!**The Snow Queen by Shannon Morton- This one was very hard for me to read  the writing and imagination of the author is great and she is without a doubt talented, but the story itself left me with a tummy ache. I literally hate the main character! LOL Just a vile and dark creature. I kept waiting for the turning point where she realized she was an evil demon spawn of satan…but it never came. She was just an evil human being and I had a hard time reading about the joy she got from destroying beautiful souls  I really want to go read something else by this author so I can write a review for a story that leaves me happy, because I did enjoy her style very much!**Caged by LP Dover ~ Rapunzel- Great love story! Full of hope, heartache, betrayal, and a fight for your heart that is inspiring!**Puss in Boots by Brynn Myers- Another great love story with a twist that just makes you smile….and cringe a little in places, but all in all just a fantastic story that has you really cheering on the characters.**Rell by Amy Daws ~ Cinderella- I really loved this twist! Made me cry in all the wrong places, yes I said that, because I’m a weirdo and cried at all happy parts, and I didn’t want it to end! Great great story!**Casting Crowns and Other Curious Things by Elizabeth Montgomery ~ Alice in Wonderland – This was a fun and dark twist that I very much enjoyed. Will be looking for more from this author.**Hansel & Gretel by Cameo Renae- OK, I’m not gonna lie, I went into this book purely to read this story! I am a sucker for a Cameo Renae story! This epic tale was set in the ARV-3 world and just…so….freaking….AMAZING!!! Hands down my fav in the book, and once again having me long for book 4 or anything from this scary and fantastic post apoc world!**Real Boy by Kellie Sheridan ~ Pinochio- I really liked this twist, totally creepy for me because I already have a fear of robots taking over the world LOL but I just felt like it just ended way to fast. It got all intense and exciting!! I sat up in and got anxious and then BAM! It just spun and was over  I wanted just a little more drawn out ending. But I guess me wanting more is a good thing. It must be hard when it’s a short story.**Jaclyn and the Beanstalk by M. Clarke – This was another fantastic twist with a great ending, one that left you satisfied, but also with the giddiness that there could be more of a story to come, fingers crossed!So all in all I adore this book full of twisted fairy tales by such amazing and talented authors! Even the one story that hurt my heart to read was amazing and well written. A book that is a must read and can’t wait to get it on my shelf!

These short tales leave you wanting more and more.My Quick Thoughts:"Uncloaked" by Wendy Owens-Not a typical Little red riding hood story. It's vampires, or the reborn, vs. werewolves with the help of witches and fae."Blayze & Ash" by Jessica Sorenson-Modern day Beauty & the Beast. Blayze is self sacrificing and feisty. Ash is a prick but Blayze brings love into his life and turns his life around."Little Mermaid" by K.R. Wilburn-Navy Seal meets Triton's runaway princess. Great twist fairytale twist and just cute. Loved the dramatic ending."Dance With Me" by Tish ThawerWas unfamiliar with the original fairytale, so this whole story was a complete surprise. Overall just a strange story that ends with a good ending."Awakened" by Kristen Strassel-Sultry, Sexy and Hot! Vampire rockers finally succumbing to their lust, yep soooo not the classic sleeping beauty but great nonetheless."Priceless" by Sarah J. Pepper-Wow sooo basically no Prince Charming or Mr. Right but definitely a Mr. Dangerous & Delicious for the female lead. Loved the story and unlikely couple made the strongest because of who they really are on the inside, not external facades."Rell" by Amy Daws-Modern version of Cinderella. This time Rella has a dream to be a swimsuit fashion designer. Nice twist there."Casting Crowns and Other Curious Things" by Elizabeth Montgomery-Alice is the absolute heroine of this tale! No damsel in distress found in this tale."Hansel & Gretel" by Cameo Renae-If you've read the After Light Saga series this story is a great snippet into that world, but fairy tale style. I kinda hope we get to see Greta in the next books somehow cause she's just as awesome as Abigail Park."Real Boy" by Kellie Sheridan-Oh creepy! iRobot meets bicentennial man Pinocchio story. Bottom line never trust a robot man!! It's clear just stick to the real deal for a true HEA."Jaclyn and the Beanstalk" by M. I absolutely recommend this collection to EVERYONE.There are a few of these stories that struck a chord with me, and I want to give them specific shout outs.Uncloaked, A Reimagining of Little Red Riding Hood by Wendy Owens- This is a whole new spin on LRRH and I adored how the author was able to pull a well-known tale and pull it into one of my favorite worlds - Faery.Blayze & Ash, A retelling of Beauty an the Beast by Jessica Sorenson- this is no Disney movie people. It is emotional, raw, sad, and (other than a little magic) easy to relate to.Priceless, The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin by Sarah J. Pepper-Ok, I'm going to be honest, I didn't make great notes for this one, but the fact that my note attached to the end was "Oh hell yes!", you have to understand I loooooooved it I did. I just kept bad notes.The Snow Queen Retold by Shannon Morton-Holy F!@#. This one seriously screwed with me and I LOVED IT!~~~ "You are slaves to the feelings evoked by words on a page." ~~~OMG!! I AM!! How do you know that?! And that was just the prologue. The twisted wickedness evoked a lot for me, and the note at the end in my kindle? "Holy S@#$!" Yeah, that says it all.Casting Crowns and Other Curious Things A retelling of Alice in Wonderland by Elizabeth Montgomery- Alice in Wonderland has ALWAYS confused the crap outta me, I have never read the book and barely paid attention to the Disney version. So, I didn't expect much from this story. I was pleasantly surprised with my emotional bounty. My favorite quote:"Tyden, well, he is my happiness. His is the smile on my face each morning. The reason I know what it feels like to be alive."Now, if i didn't pick out a story, it doesn't mean I didn't like it. I enjoyed the ENTIRE collection. I will say, this needs to be read in spurts. I became overwhelmed trying to read it straight through, I mean, crap, it's FOURTEEN stories! You certainly get your money's worth with this one.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Fun filled fantasy land! By Amazon Customer I’m not usually a fantasy enthusiast so I tend to be rather picky about which books I read in this genre. I read a few reviews about this author and decided to try this short story collection about a strong willed girl, Clover, and her fiery protective dragon, Crimzon. As the author explains at the beginning, there is no book one in the collection as it can be obtained for free online. Also explained is why books eight and nine don’t contain the two main characters, Crimzon and Clover, at all. As much as I loved these characters’ adventures throughout the collection, it was actually the two books without Crimzon and Clover that I loved the most and I hope there are more stories involving the fairy folk and the wizard. I loved the world created by M.R. Mathias. It’s magical and entertaining. The characters are multifaceted and leads the reader to care about what happens to them. In one of the stories, something bad happens to a dragon (not Crimzon) and I actually felt really sad for this mythical, made-up creature. That is the work of a good writer. It’s also nice to have all of the stories in one large collection so that they can be read as one. It held my interest much better this way. The entire collection formatted to my ereader very well. Due to the fact that I read it on my ereader I really didn’t take notice of the cover and it had no bearing on my choosing to read this collection.

By Julie Baswell This is a collection of ten stories involving a young girl, Clover, and her dragon Crimzon. It begins with how they met, and continues with adventures throughout their first years together. There are a couple of stories that doesn’t involve them, but introduces other characters, that cross their path.I love all the dragon stories by M.R. Mathias. They have such interesting characters. Although this was supposed to be ten stories, for legal reasons, book one was not included. It was, however, free to download. This was a bit of a hassle having to download twice, but well worth it. I liked having the full collection of their exploits. It made me feel like I learned as they learned.

A wonderful YA series By Anodein82 Crimzon and Clover: first of all toted as a complete box set, but it's not as book one is not included in this set, and while though free through Amazon. It's not as it is marketed as. Other that that it's a charming collection of short stories featuring Crimzon, an orphaned dragon 2days hatched, and Clover, the human girl who finds him and hunts for him so that he can survive. The series goes through their many adventures.For a YA book, it's a good length, and it keeps bring you back for more. They are short stories. So even a reluctant reader is able to read them. I enjoy this series and would recommend this into my friends.

I hesitate to start The Meeting because it is the start of a series and also short. I will wait until it is finished. But I did like the characters and will follow this story. It is a story of two young twin brothers, one injured, meet two young girls who want to help them, but are cautious. Both sides are cautious. Dylan and Dax, the twins, meet Cricket and Nina and the worlds for all are changed. This is just "the meeting" as it is titled, so very short, I am sure to tell you how these four did meet and the story will be developed in the Emerge series. I will be reading the Mindspeak series by this author and I am looking forward to reading more by Heather Sunseri.

I read this story prior to reading EMERGE. I was glad I did, as this story tells how the four young people meet under the difficult time of the aftermath of a pandemic that had decimated almost all of the American population. It is a strained time, because anyone could cause death to the others, due to an air borne virus.The girls help save the life of Dylan's twin brother Dax. Relationships are started. It leaves you ready for more.

My husband and I listened to The Viscount and the Witch on a road trip. We had fun chuckling together. The Viscount and the Witch is a fun historical mystery and romance. I guessed wrong on the perpetrator but was right about most all of the rest. My husband is not big on romance or historicals but he got a kick out of this story too. The narrator did a good job of voicing the characters and made a boring trip more fun.

Alice has some special abilities that could cause her problems. Rhys is asked by his uncle to help her with the lawsuit against her. He wants to help her especially after he meets her. I like her feistiness. Alice is not meek and missish. Rhys accepts her as she is. These are great characters that I love. The secondary characters are also good.

Like many witches from that time period she has faced and faces is the book many prejudices, fears and superstitions. The hero meets heroine and falls in love with her. He is such a delightful hero. He is sweet, loving and protective of the heroine. It was a light read that I highly recommend.

About the Author English novelist and playwright Wilkie Collins was a prolific writer with a body of work comprising thirty novels, over sixty short stories, more than a dozen plays, and a wide range of non-fiction pieces. Collins is best known for his novels The Woman in White, an early sensation novela genre combining shocking gothic horror with everyday domestic settingsand The Moonstone, which is credited as one of the first modern mystery novels. In the 1850s Collins met Charles Dickens and the two struck up a friendship, which lead to Collins becoming a frequent contributor to Dickens s journals Household Words and All the Year Round. Many of his stories have been adapted for film, including Basil, A Terribly Strange Bed, The Moonstone and The Woman in White. Collins died in 1889 at the age of 65.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Jessica Fletcher meets her match By Francine Smith I really enjoyed this book. It is the predecessor to a lot of the women detective books. Its about a woman who finds out her new husband was once accused of murder. She decides, against a great deal of advice including her husband's, to find evidence of his innocence. On the way, she meets a number of interesting and superbly drawn characters. The book does contain a good deal of Victorian romance and prejudice, however. I found the portrayal of a smart young woman as constantly overcome by her emotions a bit bothersome. Plus, I've never liked love stories and, basically, this is one.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Another Good One for Wilkie By John Benintendi I was not sure how I was going to like this book just finishing the Woman in White a short time ago. I knew going in that this was not one of his more famous works but I bought it since I have read five others written by him and I had so far very much liked all the others (Dead Secret, Haunted Hotel, Woman in White, No Name & The Moonstone). This book did not disappoint me and, in fact, I read it in a mere 4 days. This is a very easy read that keeps the reader guessing on "who done it".The story is about Valeria Woodville (Macallan) who married a man that she finds out married her under an assumed name. She is bound and determined to find out why which she does depite being asked not to by her husband and his best friend. Once she finds out why her husband married her under an assumed name, (hint - he was accused of the murder of his first wife) - she then decides to prove that her husband is innocent. However, the evidence looks pretty damning that her husband actually did murder his first wife. Here is the point where she meets several different people and the puzzle begins to come together. By the end, I had thought of at least 4 different people that I thought had murdered his first wife.I will not give away the end but it is not too surprising. However, this book was an easy read and an enjoyable read. If you like Wilkie's style of writing, you will like this book. This book is certainly not as good as the Woman in White, The Moonstone or No Name, but it is good nonetheless.There are parts of this book that tend to show the prejudice against women during this time. Many times throughout the book, Valeria is asked what can a woman do that the (male) lawyers did not do during the trial. However, Wilkie gives Valeria the love and determination to find out the truth and she does so. The comments about women did not bother me for I knew this book was written in 1870's and the times were different.If you like Wilkie and have read No Name, Moonstone and Woman in White, this is a good easy read by a good author. I look forward to reading more of his works.

By propertius Without coming a "spoiler" it is necessary to be rather circumspect about the plot of the and by anticipating the ending or knowing it, the entire plot becomes to obvious in the matter motivations and clues. This mystery is very clearly a book that is infused with Victorian sensibilities and attitudes. This is the biggest problem for the modern reader to overcome and once this has been done it is really a intriguing and engaging mystery which touches upon murder, marriage, identity and the all encompassing question of motive. Think of it as "Jane Eyre" with barristers and police.

THE HAUNTING OF SUNSHINE GIRL is easily one of my literary highlights of 2015 so far By Cyrus Webb I have to be totally honest and say that like some readers of this book I had never heard of the web-series it is based on---and you know what: for me as someone who enjoys books more than movies that is probably a good thing. With that said, however, what Paige McKenzie has constructed with the character Sunshine is great on so many levels, and I'll share some of the highlights of the book from my perspective here.First thing that I love is the realness of Sunshine. She is not a perfect young girl who is having to deal with injustices heaped upon her. The way the book is written you are able to experience her feelings, her fears and the evolution of her strength.We are able to see what a move to a new place does to her as well as the way she responds to the darkness that seems to be trying to envelop her mother and her. Through the book we are also able to see that thanks to Nolan, Sunshine doesn't have to try to figure out things for herself. He is there to help, but are they really prepared for what is to come?I would have to say the great thing about this book is that it shows what someone who truly loves another is willing to do in order to save them---regardless of them danger to themselves. That, to me, is one of the greatest things about the way Sunshine Griffith is brought to life on the page. She truly loves the woman she calls mom, and that love takes her down a road that she can't soon escape.THE HAUNTING OF SUNSHINE GIRL is a fast-paced read that will make you want to see what else Paige McKenzie might have up her sleeves. Since reading the book I have not gone to the web-series (as I am sure others will as well), just to get an idea of what is next.Definitely a book that is great for readers of all ages to enjoy, this is one that is sure to be considered one of the highlights of 2015 for me.

Nenstiel An awkward, introverted teenager thinks her life is over when she relocates to a rainy Washington town. No, seriously, stick with me. Sunshine Griffith doesn’t need much in life, just her quirky antique wardrobe, her best friend, and her youthful, high-spirited mother. But when Mom’s job uproots them to gloomy Ridgemont, Washington, she feels adrift and useless. This feeling only grows when Sunshine realizes a ghost lives upstairs.Paige McKenzie starred in, and apparently co-created, the Sunshine Girl YouTube channel, producing fifty-seven episodes of Sunshine’s haunted house story between 2010 and 2012. This book, and an upcoming second volume, apparently presage an anticipated big-screen reboot, as McKenzie fleshes out details omitted from the original performance. The result isn’t particularly original, but remains nonetheless engaging.That first night, a little girl’s laughing voice and prancing footsteps echo throughout Sunshine’s house. But things quickly turn grim. Her ghost has bizarre, almost bipolar swings, wanting to play games and becoming suddenly destructive when Sunshine can’t oblige. A mournful pall hangs over Sunshine’s strangely large and well-appointed high school. Then, one stormy night, the haunting spills over, and dark forces turn her only ally, her mother, against her.McKenzie gives her young adult audience many traits they’ve come to expect from these stories—then turns them on their heads. She gives Sunshine a handsome suitor whose clever insights penetrate her crushing mysteries, but the young man’s touch makes Sunshine physically nauseous. She gives Sunshine a dark, morally ambiguous mentor, only to reveal that this mentor has ambitions that don’t necessarily require Sunshine to survive.This means the story feels both very familiar and strangely new. McKenzie evidently cherry-picks her favorite tropes from recent teen horror romances, then reassembles them in a funhouse mirror. Everything looks familiar, yet distorted: we recognize increments of Bella Swann, Clary Fray, and the Halliwell Sisters from TV’s Charmed. Yet McKenzie revitalizes them with her personal touches, and doesn’t just replay what we’ve already seen elsewhere.Despite mounting evidence, Sunshine’s mother refuses to accept the ghostly third tenant in their rain-soaked rental. Her Agent Scully-ish reliance on empirical science precludes the possibility of lingering spirits. So Sunshine, aided by her crush Nolan (I love you, don’t touch me!), begins collecting evidence. But they quickly discover that doesn’t refuse to see ghosts, she’s unable. Seems Sunshine’s strange, long-buried heritage might make her insights unique.I must acknowledge one trait I distinctly appreciate. McKenzie doesn’t force Sunshine into melodramatic “boo” moments or contrived chapter-ending cliffhangers. Despite this story’s filmic origins, McKenzie (with ghostwriter Alyssa Sheinmel) translates events into book parameters without leaving a huge scar. Novelizing a web series could’ve created a disappointing hybrid book, neither fish nor fowl. Instead, McKenzie emphasizes the creeping dread and psychological horror which print does so well.Dark spirits transfer from Sunshine’s house, into her mother. Their formerly warm relationship quickly sours. Several times, Sunshine, our first-person narrator, reports that this is the first time she’s ever lied to her mother, the first time they’ve ever had a knock-down-drag-out fight, the first time she’s ever cut class. Simultaneously, the intervening miles prove too much for another relationship: her best friend since second grade grows bored with Sunshine’s dramas. Only Sunshine has the power to exorcise the spirits severing her human bonds.Paging Dr. Freud, stat!How audiences receive this book probably depends on what they hope to find. McKenzie doesn’t tell an original, groundbreaking story, no; it’s difficult to cover two pages without recognizing some familiar trope from today’s busy YA publishing market. But McKenzie owns them, and more than once, she managed to twist something familiar into surprising pretzels, upending my jaded stoicism. No, this book isn’t original. But it sure is good.

I was not one of those people who followed the Sunshine Girl videos on YouTube so I came into this unaware of what it was about and went off the book blurb to tell me about it. I'm not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing. I suppose I went into reading this without any real expectations.For the first third or so of this book, I was pretty enthralled. I liked Sunshine and her mom Kat right away. I liked the dog and the cat and the best friend and I was grateful that the author didn't wait until the last page to start revealing the paranormal aspects of the story. This seemed like it would turn out to be the kind of old-fashioned, creepy ghost story that relies a lot on the unseen to create terror. The it went a different way.I can't say that I didn't enjoy the rest of the book, I did, but in a bit different manner. Rather than being a ghost story, this book becomes more about the strange qualities of the main character and what her future holds. I thought the plot line was pretty unique, and I was still happy to continue reading, but I also was a bit dismayed that the story went from being about one thing and suddenly became about another. I'm not sure (again with the lack of videos) where the author will take this series, but it should be interesting to see.I do have to say, the final battle with the dark force in the story was not my favourite. It seemed a bit too easy and too convenient for such heavy subject matter. I also want to mention that the bathtub scene is possibly one of the most terrifying scenes in any book I've read. So, I guess it balances.Overall I think teens (and adults) will enjoy this book. I look forward to reading the next and seeing what happens to Sunshine in the future.This review is based on a complimentary copy offered in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Outstanding Historical Thriller By ManInBlack Imagine a hero who is equal parts Robert Langdon, Indiana Jones, and Danny Ocean gets recruited to change the course of World War II. Peter Kepler is that man. Although "Peter Kepler" is just the latest alias for a man who has been a student of Harry Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.Recruited by the OSS and aided by a cast of characters ranging from a beautiful Nazi filmmaker to a renegade Catholic priest to Sir Winston Churchill himself, Peter insinuates himself into the elite of the Nazi Party as an astrologer armed with a powerful prophecy aimed at convincing Heinrich Himmler to assassinate Hitler and end the war.Ranging over vast portions of the globe and mixing fictional plots with real historical events and persons, The Zodiac Deception is a juicy read for anyone who enjoys a rousing tale of spies, history, and adventure with just a dash of the supernatural thrown in for zest.Highly recommended. It adds so much and at the same time, the crisp writing keeps things from bogging down. The plot is bold and engaging. A new hero is born! I can't wait to see what David, Peter or whatever his real name is will do next.

By Quixote010 Stars: 4.5Let's start by admitting that The Zodiac Deception won't be compared to "The Eye of the Needle" or one of Frederick Forsyth's WWII-based thrillers. It will, however, stand up for readers who liked historically accurate novels sprinkled with well-known characters and twists.When a non-formally educated con man with "no given name" is recruited by OSS director William Stephenson to formulate a complicated deception that would ultimately lead to the death of Adolph Hitler, we begin a tale that takes us to all the hot spots of the European conflict. Along the way we discover a variety of skills owned by hero (now known as Peter Kepler), many attributed to his education from such luminaries as Harry Houdini, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Konstantin Stanislavsky, the Russian theatrical director. Add a guy who knows everything about gypsy plant concoctions, worked in a circus, has a photographic mind, and sees two steps ahead And you have a pretty formidable spy.Seeing how Kepler gets out of seemingly impossible situations and uses his skills to manipulate events makes this an interesting read. Why not five stars? Frankly I thought author Gary Kriss went into too much detail to explain a point. With some brevity this could have been just as good a book with 50-75 fewer pages. Still, Kriss has created a character we can expected to reappear in another entertaining novel.
