Hatfield Colin Evans brings us a thrilling and pulpy second world war thriller featuring a quirky band of misfits fighting (and whoring) their way through the grim battlefields of the Russian front. Highly recommended for fans of Sven Hassel and Len Levinson. The only disappointing thing is the narrative ends on sort of a cliffhanger, and I am not sure if this is the first book in a series (the book was originally printed in the 80s and and searching the authors name yields little about what else he has written)

By Andre I like reading war stories and I enjoyed this novel immensely. Could not put it down and felt so disappointed to reach the end. It is raw, gripping and entertaining with highs, lows , bitter hatred, wanton revenge and the fervent will to survive. Laughs, love, when the opportunity presented itself, and sadness typical of fighting men with their backs to the wall. I tried to imagine myself in their precarious position in Torgau Prison. What would I have done?
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Well worth more than five stars and a real eyeopener. By James Folkner War is not a game and this book shows it. Set in the days before bleeding heart liberals and political correctness, the author clearly indicates how nasty war really is. Win at all costs is aim of the Reich, survival at all costs is the aim of PoW inmates held at Torgau prison. Instant death by firing squad or the meerest chance of survival and freedom. What a choice!
