Seven emotionless princesses. Three ghostly sirens. A beautiful, malicious witch haunted by memories. A handsome, self-mutilating prince. Belonging to a race that is mostly animal with little humanity, a world obsessed with beauty where morality holds no sway, a little mermaid escapes to the ocean's surface. Discovering music, a magnificent palace of glass and limestone, and a troubled human prince, she is driven by love to consult the elusive sea-witch who secretly dominates the entire species of merfolk. Upon paying an enormous price for her humanity, the little mermaid begins a new life, uncovering secrets of sexuality and the Immortal Soul. As a deadly virus threatens to contaminate the bloodstreams of the whole merfolk race, the little mermaid must choose between the lives of her people, the man she loves, or herself. A complete reinvention of Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairy tale, this is a magical-realist fable that captures the essence of sacrifice and the price of humanity.

Review "The depth Dalseno weaves into her characters and her melancholy, dreamlike prose pair beautifully with Hans Christian Andersen's original tragic fairy tale.  DROWN is darkly romantic, lush, and broke my heartin all the best ways.  It's everything a good retelling should be."- New York Times bestselling author of the Splintered series, A.G Howard"Ms. Dalseno's tale did not disappoint. In fact, it delighted me, if youcan say that about a story that left me brokenhearted... Its lyricism wasdazzling and the story itself was gorgeous..." - TeganWren, author of Inconceivable!"One of the most magical, lyrical and stunning books I have read all year, this book needs to win awards." - Benjamin of Tomes, Teen Vogue, OfTomes Publishing, Curiosity Quills Press"...an incredibly intriguing and unique read.  Dalseno takes a well known andwell loved tale and creates something darker that will have you tearingthrough the pages.  The writing is beautiful, the story is unique and Iguarantee you have never read anything like this before!" - Laura Hartley, Whats Hot Blog"Have you ever wanted to know what really lies below thesurface of thewaters and the mermaids origins, why the Sea Witch seemedso much morethan ever written, and the littlest mermaid's true desire to be humanbeyond her initial feelings for the prince? A quick snapshot of Drown By Amazon Customer 'Drown" transforms the much loved childrens story into a lively young adult fiction - filled with desire, love ❤ and sacrifice! I loved reimaging the little mermaid and her underwater world and enjoyed turning the pages to follow her inquesitive nature down a dark and desperate path to experience life as a human (like the prince). Her quest unravels unfelt emotions and desires that were unexplained in the original classic. Drown is a must read for every little mermaid fan!Esther has an exceptional ability to articulate stories with passion, intrigue and mystery. Im looking forward to reading more of her repitore.

As an adult I never considered reading a fantasy book but I sure do love childhood fairytales. Drown opened my eyes to something new that I am so glad I had the chance to experience. Drown showed me that missing piece that I have longed for since childhood. The twist and turns this book takes you on will leave you longing for more and fiercely flipping through the pages. Great work Esther!

A haunting and very adult retelling of a childhood favorite. Lots of dark twists and turns. I thought it was beautifully written and the character development was consistent with the nature of the characters themselves. Creepy and beautiful. I would definitely recommend reading it, although it might make you reconsider your childhood longing to be a mermaid.
