It has been a time for rebuilding in Geyser, but rumors of a coming attack from the Odium band of cutthroat pirates are looming. Clyde, Nevele, Flam, and Rohm must strike out separately to find a way to stop them before it’s too late.Nevele scours the dark alleys of Adeshka’s neon-lit streets, paying for information from Odium defectors, and what she learns from one is terrifying—the gang has three days before the Odium attack Geyser. Their goal: to get at the deposit of wendal stone under the city and use it to create an army of fabrick weavers, which would make the Odium the biggest threat the planet Gleese has ever seen. What makes the threat so frightening isn’t just an attack from the Odium—it’s why.

Review “Post brings to life an incredible world where sky whales and frog-like Gworks live alongside magically talented weavers like Nevele and enhanced humans like Aksel Browne, who eats bullets to shoot from his eye. While continuing onward in a race against time, the allies must also look inward, “Peril is a stage when we don’t put masks on but instead take them off,” underlining the universal need for love, acceptance, and self-worth.”—Foreword Reviews

A great story By All Things Book - Review 4.5 StarsIf you haven't read Fabrick yet, I recommend reading that book first, or you will be lost from the start.A well wrote story that will keep you going to the end. I enjoyed reading this book, as the characters grew in potential more rapidly than in the first book. This book has well developed characters and a great plot that is constantly changing just slightly enough to stay with where the story is headed. As their are three separate factions in this story, you never quite know who is working for whom. Allegiance's change repeatedly, but you better pay close attention, or you will miss the hidden agenda's each person in the factions have.

Henry "Biggie" Abbott is the son of one of Finch, Iowa's most famous athletes. His father was a baseball legend and his step-dad is a close second. At an obese 300+ pounds though, Biggie himself prefers classroom success to sports. As a perfectionist, he doesn't understand why someone would be happy getting two hits in five trips to the plate. "Forty percent, that's an F in any class," he would say. As Biggie's junior year begins, the girl of his dreams, Annabelle Rivers, starts to flirt with him and suggests he should play baseball. Hundreds of people before his dream girl have told him to follow in his dad's footsteps and play ball, but Annabelle might be the one to actually convince him to try. What happens when a boy who has spent his entire life trying to remain invisible is suddenly thrust into the harsh glare of the high school spotlight?

Biggie, by Derek E. Sullivan

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—In this debut novel, Henry is an obese high school student weighing in at 300 pounds. Because of his weight, everyone calls him Biggie, and he has little desire to try to lose the weight. That is, until one day when he is forced to participate in gym class and pitches a perfect game in a Wiffle ball match. The unathletic son of a baseball legend, he's always had little hope of living up to everyone's expectations—until that Wiffle ball game, when he catches a glimpse into his possible future. Most of his motivation to lose weight and play baseball comes from Annabelle, the popular girl he's been crushing on since elementary school, but his chances with her are ruined when she finds out that he's been hacking into her email account for years. Despite this setback, Biggie plans to lose 80 pounds, perfect his curveball, and win Annabelle back by cozying up to the popular kids. The majority of the characters are well developed, although almost none of them are likable, including Biggie, who regularly drops f-bombs, purposefully alienates everyone, and makes poor choices throughout the novel. Some teens may find Biggie's attitude off-putting. In the end, however, Biggie redeems himself by realizing that he just might be the villain of the story. This novel is well written and fairly quick-paced, but only skims the surface on the topic of bullying. VERDICT Readers who persevere through the unlikable characters will find a thoughtful conclusion.—Candyce Pruitt-Goddard, Hartford Public Library, CT

Review Chosen as a Spring 2015 Young Adult BUZZ BOOK by Publishers Lunch."Some teens may find Biggie's attitutude off-putting. In the end, however, Biggie redeems himself by realizing that he just might be the villain of the story. This novel is well written and fairly quick-paced." School Library Journal, February 1, 2015"Venturing beyond the typical boy-seeks-girl story, this filters the agonies of adolescence through a largely unvoiced perspective with an honesty readers will appreciate." Booklist, March 1, 2015"Thoughtful and witty, Biggie tells a story full of physical and emotional highs and lows as debut author Sullivan empathetically addresses topics of self-esteem and finding healthier, happier versions of oneself (and what that even means)." Publishers Weekly, January 19, 2015"Biggie's story will resonate with all those students who feel invisible and alone. A bighearted story that will have readers rooting for Henry 'Biggie' Abbott." Kirkus Reviews, January 15, 2015

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. I am Biggie, and... By Charmaine I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.Henry "Biggie" Abbott is me.I was the fat kid, the super smart kid, the kid who stood outside of the popular circle looking in. I preferred sitting in bed with a textbook (and the compulsory Mountain Dew) than feeling the weight (literally and figuratively) of trying to fit in at social events. Living out an entire romantic relationship with my crush in my head was simpler than waving to him in the hallway.Henry's inner monologue isn't pretentious and doesn't overshoot his age and maturity level. He's a teenager. A really, really smart one, but a teenager nonetheless. His complicated family structure (his stepfather's vacillating between indifference and contempt for Biggie, the early abandonment by his birth father whose legacy sticks around as a jabbing reminder) is written with a mature voice and heartbreaking authenticity. His boyish (bordering on outlandish) ideas and behavior regarding all things Annabelle are an amusing snap back to reality, reminding the reader that late adolescence is truly a study in contrast.Kudos to the author, in a climate of hyperbolized teenage characters and fantastical plotlines, for letting us into Henry "Biggie" Abbott's head for a while. In doing so, he shows us that even those kids without superpowers or tragic fates can leave an unforgettable mark on readers. Long live Biggie!

I generally lean towards books with more history, romance, and less baseball but I enjoyed this book immensely. I could not put it down and re-read some passages many times. It is not as expected and very different from a lot of YA fiction today. It has real characters, with normal problems, but told in a way that the reader is enveloped into Biggie's world. Biggie's weight is merely a jumping off point for a universal story of how kind we are to ourselves and others. And the ramifications of how we treat ourselves and others. I cannot wait to read more from this author!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Uneven writing, but this book will find its readers By Jane Easterly The writing in Biggie by Derek E. Sullivan is very uneven. In his acknowledgements, the author says he originally wrote a short story about an overweight teen who throws a perfect game of Wiffle ball in gym class. That portion of the book was for me without question the best part. The ending, which takes the Wiffle ball experience to a higher level, was very hard to believe, as was the main character’s encounter with his long-absent father. Biggie also quits the team and is taken back by his coach for the Big Game without too much fuss, and I did not find that realistic.I enjoyed the Iowa setting and the baseball theme in the plot, and the author does write some beautiful lines. For example:“To avoid being hit by spoken bullets, I have decided to never point that gun at anyone else. I keep my mouth shut at all costs.” (p. 3 of the advance reader copy)“[The boys] walk out. A few of them look over at me on the bleachers. They probably think I’m early for a meeting of the nerds or geeks or loners. Wait. Do loners have meetings? I think I’m losing my mind or having my first panic attack.” (p. 45 of the advance reader copy)At times Biggie’s voice sounded very real and natural, and at other times he was a little too self-aware (as often happens with first person narrators). Biggie and his stepfather have a troubled relationship, but the stepfather is not a mean stereotype. It is also refreshing to have a fat kid protagonist, and I’m sure this book will find its readers. It’s a decent debut novel. The author shows promise.I read an advance reader copy of Biggie.

Review “Sophie's thrillers are brilliant, you never know what's on the next page and you can't stop reading until you find out.” (Robert Muchamore, author of the Cherub series)“A terrifying, fast-paced thriller that you won’t be able to put down.” (Teen Now, four-star review)"Split Second is a rollercoaster of a read, full of twists and turns and betrayals" (The Book Bag)"Had me completely hooked from the first to the last page" (Kirsty, Overflowing Library (on Good Reads), four stars)"EXPLOSIVE!…It’s actually like being on a high speed train, heading to an unknown and dangerous destination. You think you are going to take one route and then the author switches tracks...it almost had an eerie premonistic feel to it, in the same way George Orwell’s 1984 did. A gritty, thrilling and fast paced novel.” (Serendipity Reviews)"Sophie McKenzie has her finger on the pulse of a future that is all too plausible…It just does not let up, & I found myself devouring it.” (ShrinAlpa (Blogger, also children’s bookseller for Waterstones Northallerton))"This political whodunit...boasts more than a dash of romance and plenty of action. The result is something of a cross between Pnina Moed Kass’ Real Time and Robert Muchamore’s CHERUB series." (Booklist)McKenzie’s fast-paced novel...is a gripping read...Readers may find themselves binge reading to the end." (VOYA)

About the Author Sophie McKenzie was born and brought up in London, where she still lives with her teenage son. She has worked as a journalist and a magazine editor, and now writes full time. She has tallied up numerous award wins and has twice been longlisted for the Carnegie Medal.

I glanced at my phone. It was almost 3 p.m. Three p.m. was when the bomb would go off. I raced along the street, my heart banging against my ribs. I had to find Lucas. Canal Street market. That’s what the text had said. That was where Lucas would be. My lungs burned as I gasped at the cold air. I ran faster, pushing through the crowds. The covered market was packed with shoppers, most of whom were heading for the food stall run by the Future Party. Since the cutbacks had really set in last year, unemployment had risen fast. Now people who would once never have dreamed of taking a handout lined up for free food from the only political party in the country that seemed to care. I hurtled past the line. Most people were staring at the ground as they shuffled along, avoiding eye contact. There was no sign of Lucas. I kept running. The bomb wouldn’t be here, anyway. Why would anyone want to bomb people so poor they had to line up for food? The next few stalls all sold ethnic clothes—a mix of bold African prints and soft Thai silks. I turned the corner, past the section of the market specializing in baby stuff. No. No way. Neither Lucas nor the bomb would be here. Not where there were babies, for goodness’ sake. I ran on, panting, past the market clock. It was just four minutes to three. There was hardly any time left. I looked up. The market had a second floor full of cheap toiletries and household goods. Should I go up there or check more of the ground floor? A security guard strode past. I stared at the radio that hung from his belt. I’d been so focused on finding Lucas I hadn’t thought about everyone else in the market. There were lots of people milling about. Lots of children with their mums and dads. I chased after the security guard. Grabbed his arm. “Listen,” I said. “You need to clear the market. Get everyone out.” The man turned. His face filled with suspicion. “What did you say?” “There’s a bomb,” I said. “I don’t know exactly where, but it’s in the market and it’s going to go off in a few minutes.” The security guard frowned, a look of disbelief on his face. “What makes you think that, kid?” he said. “I just do. You have to believe me. Please.” Heart pounding, I caught sight of my reflection in the shiny Future Party sign that pointed the way to their free food stall. My hair was messed up, my eyes wild and staring. No wonder the security guard was looking at me like I was crazy. “You have to clear the whole place.” “Wait here,” the guard said with a sigh. “I’ll go and get the site manager.” “No, there’s no time.” But the security guard was already striding away, heading toward the stalls I had just passed. As I turned to the next aisle, intending to run on, I caught a glimpse of a black leather jacket on the stairs up to the second floor. Was that Lucas? I strained my eyes, but the jacket had disappeared, lost in the crowds. I swerved to the left and raced toward the stairs. I sped past a stall promising fifty percent off piercings and tattoos. A girl about my age stood in front, arguing with a woman. She was gesticulating wildly, her face flushed. “Why not, Mum?” she was shouting. Even racing past at top speed I could see the girl was pretty, with a mass of wild, honey-colored curls cascading over her shoulders. But there wasn’t time to take a second look. I took the stairs up to the second floor, two steps at a time. It was two minutes to three. And I still hadn’t found Lucas.

This one really reminded me of a book called BlackOut by Robinson Wells but where that one had some yummy plot twists and well a paranormal aspect. In a Split Second was bogged down by a lot of gilt and well just ended up being boring. The characters didnt work for me and well I would have loved to learn more about the world they lived in. There was no mystery in the book as you know who the bad guy is. So this one just didnt work for me. Go Into This One KnowingInsta love, no real world building, boring, predictable

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Impossible to put down By Anna (Enchanted by YA) ***I received the eBook free as a review copy from the publisher through Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review***Sophie McKenzie has an amazing talent for writing action packed YA thrillers that are simply impossible to put down. Split Second was no exception. There was a high level of dystopian content which was done well, in that you weren’t bogged down with endless details at the very beginning. It was partly due to the fact it closely resembled the world we live in today but where society has changed drastically as a response to budget cuts and unemployment. You could clearly see the parallels, which was interesting; but I didn’t get the sense that the book was designed to make you think about your own life, any more than it was a story to enjoy. It’s told through a dual narrative with Charlie and Nat as the main protagonists and narrators. Something that often stumps authors is writing the voices so they’re easily distinguishable, but after reading her other series The Medusa Project I already knew McKenzie could do it. Once again I was right. Both characters were very different, but their strengths complimented the others weaknesses. I particularly loved Charlie’s bad-ass character, though it didn’t stop her getting into a few close scrapes…There were so many twists and turns with regards to just about everything, it was hard to keep up so if that’s your type of thing (like it is mine) you should definitely pick this book up!Posted on: http://enchantedbyya.blogspot.co.uk/

From School Library Journal Gr 6 Up—A typical library's collection of career books can quickly become dated or out of touch. Enter this manual. With simple graphics, bright colors, and a vast compendium of information, this guide will engage teens who are wondering, "What now?" Each page contains a job description, information on related careers and salaries, and a skills guide. The book explains precisely how to go from dipping a toe into the waters of a particular job to the highest positions within the field. The index is well organized, and the entries are nicely cross-referenced. The material can be dry or a bit vague at times, especially for readers who would be interested in discovering real-life applications. However, it should be useful for students, and the wide scope of knowledge will keep it current for longer than many comparable titles. VERDICT This strong addition will be fun for browsers as well as for those selecting college majors and making job decisions.—Erinn Black Salge, Saint Peter's Prep, Jersey City, NJ

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Very Well Done! By Talvi DK Published has managed a nearly impossible feat here: they've created a book that is packed full of information but also inviting and friendly. A perfect synthesis of hard and soft presentation to create a very useful and incredible usable guidebook suitable for teens and tweens. The book is color coded by job type and includes many disciplines: health and medicine; sports, leisure, and tourism; security and emergency services; construction; transportation; arts, crafts, design; performing arts, media, and journalism; sales, marketing, and advertising; administration and business management; finance, law, politics; information technology and computing; science and research; animals, farming, and the environment; engineering and manufacturing. Each of the above disciplines give information on several job types. E.g., Animals, Farming, and the Environment has job descriptions for: veterinarian, animal care worker, zookeeper, farm manager, horticultural worker, landscape architect, ecologist. This allows the child to see the different aspects of working in that field and gravitate toward one that appeal most are for which they are best suited. Each job has a career path journey graphically laid out with important aspects including personality needs, parent or role model influence, type of eduction received, internship, grades, after school jobs, future financial goals, where the tween lives, etc. It's a good reminder that no career is gifted - it takes work and dedication as well as many other factors to secure a desired job. There is also an 'understanding yourself' checklist to help readers find careers of interest. This includes call out boxes on personal qualities, circumstances, skills, interests, subjects, motivators, etc. It's great for tweens/teens who haven't gravitated to a career goal yet. There is also a section on taking action while in school to find out more about careers of interest. This includes setting goals, seeking advice, research, volunteering, and more. What it entails when actually going out and getting the job is also presented - again very graphically and intelligently. Each section of careers/job disciplines are color coded for easy reference. There is a description, salary caps, industry profile, related careers, checklist call out box to see if it would be suitable for the reader, career paths, and skills guide. All beautifully laid out and easy to follow. This could easily have been pretty to look at but not very useful. But in checking out the section on my particular career area (professional photographer), I was highly impressed with the relevance and accuracy of the job descriptions, salary expectations, and career paths. There were many places the editors could have got it very wrong if they had not looked into the careers in depth. But they got it all right - from the need for self promotion and management skills to the usefulness of internships. It was all right on the money for my husband's career as well. This is the type of book that is so well presented, it really should be at every junior high school in America. But it is also very useful and practical as a place to begin discussions of career choices in middle and high school. It's a book presented for the reader but without pandering or oversimplification. The graphics do more than pretty up the text - they categorize, order, and clarify the information presented. This is one book I highly recommend - one of the most intelligently presented, relevant, and accurate non fiction children's books I've read in a long time. Reviewed from an advance readers copy supplied by the publisher.

Good information for teens By Cathe I got this book for my teen daughters who are trying to figure out what they want to study in college and what careers might interest them. The book is divided into sections such as: Media and Journalism; Sales, Marketing and Advertising; Administration and Business Management; Finance, Law and Politics, Information Technology and Computing; etc. with brief information on a number of careers in each category giving a little info on the job and the education needed. The info is helpful, but the book can be a bit overwhelming and time consuming for teens who do not want to spend time paging through the whole book. A quiz or self evaluation would be helpful to guide teens to relevant sections or careers rather than having to locate the beginning of each section to read the descriptions and then page through all the career choices.

They have an established well deserved reputation for exciting illustrations and interesting layout and design. You know when you're reading a DK book - you'll be distracted by all the artwork and illustrations! I have a DK English dictionary which is several years old and it's just about perfect for families and kids. Illustrations on every page. It's a dictionary you actually want to browse through.Careers is not that kind of book. The only illustrations are iconic clip art. The result is that this is almost totally geared toward non-visual learners. It's totally text driven because icons don't really convey personal experience. I just don't think that's how most people's brains function. And besides, to understand what someone does in their job you need to SEE what they're doing, not just read about it. I realize this would increase the cost of the book. However, this is what DK Publishing does for a living. They must already have access to a massive library of imagery. Why skimp here? The second issue I have with the book is the inaccurate pay range estimates and the absurd examples they give between entry and professional level. The book shows jobs like electrician and carpenter as having the lowest beginning wages whereas someone in journalism have it slightly better in terms of starting pay. It's the opposite. These aren't the only examples of this misinformation. The examples of the range of positions in the US military are the most absurd. For example, in the Army profile they have private as the starting position and four star general as the advanced position. In all the other non-military jobs the range is more like junior scientist and senior scientist. How many senior scientists are there? Thousands. How many four star generals in the Army? There's a maximum of seven. No one joins the Army thinking they're going to make a living as a four star general. A more realistic goal would be staff sergeant or captain. Then there's the profile for college professor. There is zero mention of the adjunct professor. They show assistant professor as the starting position. That is just flat our incorrect. Adjuncts are part time professors who are paid per course, typically less than $3k per course in a semester with zero benefits. Adjuncts make up a minimum of 40% of all college teaching positions. Some estimates put it at well over 50%. There is no mention in the book about how your success depends on your chosen field of study. Study certain STEM fields and you've got a great career path. Pick a social science and you'll be an automatic adjunct at best.Yes, this book does offer a lot of valuable information. But I expected so much better from DK. And the inconsistencies just annoy the heck out of me. Kids need realistic advice when it comes choosing a career path. So this book is just the start of a far bigger conversation. If you or your child find an interesting career in this book you'll need to do more research to get a more accurate picture.

Jason Kerrings is a walking cliche: the football player who gets all the girls and doesn't care, or does he? He sure seems to care about pushing a certain journalist's buttons. Natalie Daniels is relying on a journalism program to stay away from her parent's dreams of Ivy League. The only thing standing in her way is one egotistical Neanderthal who is determined to make her assignment a new kind of hell. Rubin Carter was in and out of reformatories and prisons from the age of twelve. At twenty-four, he became a winning professional boxer and was turning his life around. But Carter was also very vocal about racism in the local New Jersey police force. In 1966, local policemen arrested Carter and a friend for a triple murder. The two were convicted and sent to jail for life. Carter spent nearly twenty years in jail, proclaiming his innocence.A teen from Brooklyn, Lesra Martin, heard Carter's story and believed he was innocent. He and a small group of Canadians contacted Carter and began working with Carter's lawyers in New York to get the boxer exonerated. In 1985, a judge released Carter, ruling that Carter's conviction had been based not on evidence, but on racism.Carter moved to Canada in 1985, where until his death in 2014 he worked helping others prove that they had been wrongfully convicted.

Real Justice: Jailed for Life for Being Black: The Story of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter (Lorimer Real Justice), by Bill Swan

Review "This is an inspiring story, especially for students facing obstacles similar to Carter's - the speech impediment, the childhood abuse, the racism and all the travesties of justice that follow in its wake." (Joan Givner, Resource Links)"[This is a book that once you open it to read you are going to have a real hard time putting it down. It is a real page turner. . . This book is a must read. . . I highly recommend this book to everyone. I look for more fantastic books from Bill Swan." (Marjorie Boyd-Springer, NetGalley Reviewer 2015-04-01)"Jailed for Life for Being Black is an inspiring, balanced portrait of a complex but inspiring man and the injustice that cost him two decades of freedom. Ironically, he may never have found his calling if he had not been denied a fair trial and wrongfully convicted." (Val Ken Lem, CM: Canadian Review of Materials)"A fascinating true-life story, told lucidly and fairly, making clear the injustices Carter suffered without whitewashing the more troublesome parts of his personality." (Max Thornton, Reviewer, NetGalley 2015-01-21)"Swan engages readers from the first chapter with an account of the murders and Carter's arrest, then goes back to tell the story of Carter's earlier life, including a lengthy description of his bout for the World Middleweight Championship... The gripping topic and low reading level will attract reluctant readers." (Jackie Partch, School Library Journal)"...ideal for sparking conversation on choice, prejudice, corruption, and social justice." (School Library Journal 2015-09-02)"[A very engaging story." (Cheryl Mikulasik Educator, NetGalley Reviewer 2014-10-31)

I highly recommend this book to everyone By Coco Given To Me For An Honest ReviewReal Justice: Jailed for Life for Being Black: The Story of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter by Bill Swan well all I can say is boy do I remember this well. I was a young girl in high school when all of this happened. Anyway, this is a book that once you open it to read you are going to have a real hard time putting it down. It is a real page turner with a few twists and turns. Rubin had been in and out of juvenile hall (reformatories) up until age of 12. When he was 24, he became a professional boxer. At that time he became very outspoken about racism within the New Jersey police department. In 1966, he was arrested along with a friend and was charged and convicted with 3 counts of murder. They were sentenced to life. In 1985, after serving 20 years, "Hurricane" was exonerated. It was ruled that he was convicted not on evidence but on racism. This book is a must read. During that time period so much racism was around us. I highly recommend this book to everyone. I look for more fantastic books from Bill Swan.

True Crime for YA By Julie These "Real Justice " books are amongst a small set of books that are short , written for YA kids ,so they are quick reads .This one is the second one I've read . I think they all concentrate on cases in which someone is wrongly convicted .This one is about a famous Black boxer named Rubin Hurricane Carter ,who was from a bad neighborhood ,and in and out of trouble for most of his young life . He was no angel , but he was also not a killer . In 1966 , he and a friend just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time . 2 Black guys in a white car had just come into a local "whites only " bar, and blasted all 4 people inside . He and his friend were falsely accused and convicted. This tells his story and how he got released from jail for a crime he didn't commit.

Despite the evidence proving his innocence, he spent nearly twenty years in jail fighting for his freedom. This is a quick read, designed to be a teaching tool for young adults. I have mixed feelings about the effectiveness of the book for a diverse audience.

Everybody Knows Your Name, by Andrea Seigel, Brent Bradshaw

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—When 10 assorted and unlikely teens are chosen to appear on a Big Brother-meets-American Idol reality TV show called Spotlight, personalities are bound to spark. These participants will live together in a fabulous mansion in the Hollywood Hills, and after each performance one will be eliminated by the panel of celebrity judges and the voting American public. In alternating chapters, Seigel and Bradshaw flesh out a distinct and often quirky personality for each of the performers, family members, and program employees through their interaction with the main characters, Magnolia and Ford. She is a pretty young Californian whose father died after leaving her and her fame-obsessed mother, and whose surfer boyfriend pops in and out of her life. Magnolia wants to change—and this show might be a terrific way to reinvent herself. Ford's family in Arkansas spends more time in jail than in their broken-down home, and needs to win Spotlight in order to pull himself out of the family's cycle of self-destruction. The teens make an unlikely couple, but their relationship makes great publicity for the show. Through costume and hairstyle changes, rehearsals, high-profile parties, and live performances, they soon learn the price of fame, and the consequences of their actions. A must-read for fans of light romance and reality TV and those who enjoyed Heather Demetrios's Something Real (Holt) and Kate Hattemer's The Vigilante Poets of Selwyn Academy (Knopf, both 2014).—MaryAnn Karre, West Middle School, Binghamton, NY

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Way more deep and thoughtful than I was expecting By Stefani Sloma You can read this review and more on my blog, Caught Read Handed.Everybody Knows Your Name is essentially about two people who are contestants on a reality show that is basically a mix between American Idol and The Real World, which is more interesting than it sounds, promise. But that’s not all (or even most) of what this book is about. Rather than giving all of its attention to the reality TV/faux celebrity aspect, this book focuses on real-life developments and the self-discovery that can happen when you’re in the spotlight. Everybody Knows Your Name is way more introspective, thoughtful, and relatable than I was expecting of a book that could easily have been filled with childish, petty, celebrity drama. I was really impressed with it.The characters are well-developed and distinctive, even the minor characters felt like someone I could run into somewhere out in the real world. Well, some of them were only ones you’d come across in Hollywood, which isn’t necessarily the realest place. Magnolia and Ford, our main characters, were relatable and I found myself really liking Magnolia for her desire to be exactly who she is and no one else. The romance was pretty much instalove, which you guys know I despise, but it didn’t bother me as much for some reason. One thing I think was missing from the book was a little more from the reality show – I wanted to see how they felt on stage during eliminations and performances. I wanted to see a few more of those performances, even just a few lines about what the minor characters were like on stage. I think a lot of the book just kind of gleamed over all of that, which felt like a strange thing to take out. However, the focus on what it’s like in reality TV and the way that people can obsess with any kind of “celebrity” was so so true. The bottom line: Everybody Knows Your Name is way more deep and thoughtful than I was expecting, but in the best way. I loved getting to know these characters and I was rooting for them both on the show and in the way they were changing. I liked the open ending (for the most part) and the appendixes really added to the story. This book is perfect for fans of reality television and realistic characters.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This book is much better and more thoughtful than one would assume By Bree Rolfe I'm almost 40. I shouldn't be staying up until 2 AM reading a YA novel. However, I did and I'm not ashamed. This book is much better and more thoughtful than one would assume. The characters are complex and compelling. The story is engaging. I gave a copy to one of my high school students to read after standardized testing and she loved it so much she insisted on buying her own copy rather than borrowing mine. Another of my students was sneak reading it today in class. I can't blame her. It's that good.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Smart, funny, sexy By Hannah Pfeifle I read this into the wee hours of the night, wanting to know what would happen to Magnolia and Ford. The storyline was anything but predictable. The characters were complex and well-developed. This world felt authentic. And the book concludes in a highly satisfying way. I loved it.

It’s the summer of 1990 and America has just won the Cold War and finds itself the last superpower. As Iraqi tanks roll into Kuwait the world calls for action. The coalition is short one major player as America is distracted by an old nemesis. Out of Vietnam, hard evidence of hundreds of surviving American prisoners of war has been made public. With a Vietnam War veteran and former POW sitting in the oval office and overwhelming public outrage the country has only one choice: The American military is going back to Vietnam. And this time they are going to win. In this episode the Vietnam crisis escalates as the USS Missouri sails for the Gulf of Tonkin to enforce an embargo, Special Forces sneak across the Vietnam border looking for POWs and fighters and bombers move into the Pacific preparing for the air campaign. Meanwhile a new joint command center is stood up in Hawaii to oversee the campaign as Vietnam II, also known as Operation Jungle Storm, becomes the first US military joint operation. For the first time in the history of the Department of Defense interservice rivalries will be pushed aside and all four branches will be working as one. As the January 16th, 1991 deadline approaches and the POWs are not released the American military prepares for precision strikes against Vietnam. Operation Jungle Storm is about to begin. Vietnam II is a novel of alternate history.

When the border between Floriana and the United States is opened after 80 years, Nathan and Caroline visit as official tourists and unofficial spies. Escorted around picturesque turn-of-the-century New Orleans, they quickly realize they are being prevented from seeing the real city—and evidence of an incipient revolution. After two assassination attempts, Nathan begins to question his loyalty to a king who may have deliberately placed them in harm’s way. The pair are determined to find out who is trying to kill them and why. A hurricane interrupts their search, and Nathan believes Caroline has drowned in the raging waters. Grief-stricken, he joins the revolution where he must face his deepest fears. Meanwhile, Caroline refuses to believe her rescuers when they tell her Nathan fell in the battle of New Orleans. Penniless and alone, she falls desperately ill. For once, Nathan and Caroline’s paranormal abilities fail to help. Will their love for each other be enough to reunite them?

By Elizabeth MacGregor-Kirkcaldy Following A QUESTION OF BOUNDARIES, author, Sandy Bruney's second book in her Alternate Historical Timeline Paranormal, Question Series, A QUESTION OF LOYALTY, finds Caroline and Nathan entangled in the political intrigue and deception of a revolution on the brink of ripping a country asunder. Will their love prove strong enough to withstand the unrelenting destructive forces of war and nature? With the borders between the United States finally open once again, Caroline and Nathan Llewelyn journey to Floriana for a belated honeymoon. As the first official tourists to venture south of the border since the deadly plague eighty years before, which caused King Thomas the First to seal the borders, Caroline is excited to make the long-awaited riverboat journey down the Mississippi, and explore the beauty of the legendary, beautiful city of New Orleans. Nathan, however, has far more than sight-seeing on his agenda. With growing unrest and rumors of revolution circulating behind the scenes in Floriana, King Thomas IV has sent Nathan to ferret out any news of the insurgence, and report back to him. Their highly anticipated honeymoon begins in peril, as just before reaching New Orleans there is an explosion aboard the riverboat, and Caroline and Nathan barely escape with their lives. Once in New Orleans, they soon discover the beautiful city, as well as the country, President Fontaine, and their official guide, Monsieur Filmont, harbor deadly secrets that may well cost them their lives. Surrounded by intrigue and conspiracy, Caroline and Nathan soon find themselves out of the frying pan and into the fire when they lose one another amidst the violent forces of nature during a hurricane. Will it be the unwavering strength and boundless depths of their love for one another that reaches out to save them from peril as they struggle through the darkness of war and near death to find each other again rather than their growing paranormal abilities? With a deft pen, Sandy Bruney draws the reader into Caroline and Nathan's perilous adventure, creating a fascinating and magical world peopled with heart-warming characters, where paranormal abilities are second nature, and shape shifters your best friends. In a memorable story that tugs at the heartstrings, she reminds us that true love is a precious gift to treasure, and proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that no matter how beautiful and exotic a foreign locale may be, at the end of the day there is truly no place as dear and safe as in the cherished arms and hearts of your loved ones, and home sweet home... True love does, indeed, conquer all.

Love in a World that is a shade off the Familiar World By Caruso's Dad A note about the 4/5 rating: A fine book that I enjoy reading once deserves a 3/5 rating, and this book may be a bit better than that. I reserve 5/5 ratings for those few books that I think I would recommend as great books twenty years from now after reading them two or three times.Nathan Llewellen and Caroline Featherstone, central characters in Ms Bruney’s previous book, A Question of Boundaries, have returned in A Question of Loyalty, but this time they are a married couple. Their world is not our world, but is mostly recognizable to Americans. The United States in these books would remind readers of the USA in Orson Scot Card’s Alvin Maker series. The geography and place names are recognizable, but would not match any US map, present or past. The history of this fictional land began to diverge from our history in the early 1800s, and technological progress has been slower. Most citizens of these alternative worlds recognize that some of their neighbors have magical powers but pretend otherwise in public conversation. These differences give plausibility to plot twists that would not make sense in our own world, and Ms Bruney does a fine job of exploiting the characteristics of her alternative world.A Question of Loyalty is in most respects a continuation of A Question of Boundaries, and I think the reader would benefit from reading them in order. Fortunately, this is easy to do, as the language is accessible and the books are short enough that both could be read in a single weekend. If you like your love stories intertwined with world-threatening epidemics and other natural disasters, political intrigue, sneaky activities of corrupt businessmen, a few murders and even a short war, this is your kind of story. High school students looking for an adventure without a lot of gore and a plot with the promise of a rosy future should find these books especially satisfying.

The situations they get into as they travel keep us going, wanting more. The stories never disappoint. Action, love, sorrow - it's all there. It was so sad when Nathan thinks his Caroline has perished and he hopes to die too by joining in the battle at New Orleans. We hope and pray that he does not for he is our hero!Highly recommended byLila L. PinordAuthor of Min's Monsterand three other novels

Eventually, he became increasingly aware that terrorist activities in the Middle East had become more widespread, with innocent casualties continuing to mount. His interest in mentoring others was now shifting gears...onto the global stage. Returning home from a meeting of non-traditional medical practitioners, he experiences a supernatural event, granting him advanced psychic abilities. Gravely concerned and now preoccupied with chaotic worldwide occurrences he forms an alliance with Doctor Yousef Shamini, a foreign trained chemist, Dr. Sonia Grable a medical colleague, and a consortium of Israeli cabinet officials with a singular purpose; to formulate a revolutionary plan to solve an age old dilemma.

It was over the top as to total believability, but I want to believe it nonetheless. This is a good fictional story intertwined with historical fact that keeps you involved as the two brothers weave their way from neophytes to experienced backwoods trappers; and later to manhood as they face the unknown together in one of the more famous old west stories. I enjoyed the story immensely.

The plot is so unique, that you certainly can't complain about it being cliche or boring. From the beginning, Reddy describes a world in great detail, including local traditions and way of life that for me, was something completely new. I found this aspect of the story to be the most interesting, and I appreciated how much effort the author put into it.Maya was my favorite character, and for me was very believable. I loved the interactions between her and her brother and friends. I don't usually give a summary in my reviews, because I feel that is for the back-of-the-book and I don't want to give anything away. I would just like to encourage any prospective readers, that your time will certainly NOT be wasted on this story and it is well worth the money. It is well done, and a great read!

Reddy brings to her wonderful children’s books a rich background for data gathering: she has a post graduate in Mathematics, has worked in a bank for twenty-six years, is married to a physics professor, has a son doing research in neuro-electronics! Of the many books she has written this new KING NEPTUNE’S DELITE shows a maturity of style and a complexity of characters yet she continues to maintain a fine sense of entertainment and lessons for the reader to learn. She describes her genre as ‘mysteries, adventure, fantasy, science fiction, and even animal tales for children.’Gita remains a teacher as well as a story spinner. At the opening of this book she offers some important background on India: ‘India has 22 official languages and almost 400 living languages. King Neptune’s Delite takes place in Kerala, a southern state of India, where most people speak Malayalam. Three Malayalam words appear in the book: achan, chettan and chechi. achan means father. chettan means elder brother but it is also used after an older man’s name, to show respect. For example, people younger to James will address him as James chettan. It would be rude to call him only by his name-James. chechi means elder sister but like chettan, it is also used after a woman’s name, to show respect.’ This book is meant for an older group of youngsters, ages 9 – 14, and so the information she offers is a valuable educational moment. We absorb the atmosphere in her opening paragraph: ‘Every day, Maya collected seashells, smooth pebbles, and driftwood for Moosa who owned the only curio shop in the village. Her brother Satish and two friends Raju and Jacob also picked the beach along with her. Maya was ten and was the youngest in the group but she was the leader. She watched Moosa while he created ornaments and decorative pieces and learnt what he needed. He paid a higher price for the shells and driftwood she picked. He also accepted whatever pebbles she brought to him. While the other children picked pebbles by shape, size, and color, Maya chose the ones that would look best in fish tanks.’ So on with the story as summarized by the author. ‘Maya finds a bottle with a diamond ring and some papers in it. Along with her brother and friends, she puts together the clues and discovers they have a distress signal from someone held captive on a ship named King Neptune’s Delite. The children are excited by the dazzling find. Even Maya, who is usually more sensible than the others, is swept on the wave of adventure. Instead of going to a grownup, the children embark on a reckless mission, with all possibility of getting into serious trouble.’As always with Gita’s stories she gives a glimpse of Indian rural culture, and shows how a close-knit community takes care of its children. A solid little read. Grady Harp, April 16

An Incredible and Delightful Journey - Best Adventure a Kid Can Read By Lisa's Book Reviews This mysterious and action-packed story begins with Maya, who is ten, Satish, 11, Jacob, 12, and Raju, 12, who are friends and pick seashells, driftwood, and other pebbles from the beach to be made into something to be sold at the local curio shop. Moosa, Satish’s sister, is the owner of the only curio shop in the village. Raju was a little less adventurous than Satish and Jacob; he was more cowardly, though he was not a coward, just less aggressive and more cautious. Maya, although the youngest of the four seemed to always and often be settling their differences and keeping peace among the group of friends. Maya was very interested in collecting items from the beach as she was working on a photo frame, but one day she hoped to open a shop quite the same as Moosa’s. As they were combing the beach for lucky finds, Maya spotted a bottle floating on top of the water. She held it in her hands, calling to her friends. Jacob grabbed the bottle. They discovered there was a ring inside along with a few scraps of paper. As Jacob and Satish grabbed at the ring, it slipped between their fingers and fell down into the water just as a wave rushed in, perhaps taking with it the ring as the wave rolled back out to sea.Maya scooped at the sand between the boys hoping to discover the ring still remained. As the clumps of sand fell away, the ring definitely revealed itself. Next the four of them made sense of the items the bottle contained. They came to the conclusion that it was a distress signal from someone kidnapped and being held against her will as the one piece of paper showed the etched word, help, perhaps made by the edge of the ring. The boys were very determined to assist the mysterious captive and made plans as to what they would do. They all went out in spite of the danger in search for clues and information rather than going to the police as was earlier suggested. What happens next is something best left to the reader as the events as they unfold are better enjoyed if read firsthand. The reader will enjoy King Neptune’s Delite as it is filled with mystery and adventure on every page. Wishing to know to whom the ring belonged and whether she is held captive is an incredible journey taken by the reader’s mind. Raju’s dangerous plight keeps one right at the edge of their seat, pulling the reader to learn this tale’s incredible end. There are three Malayalam words found in this writing. They are achan, chettan, and chechi. The author fully explains their use due to cultural importance. This book gives the reader a slight introduction to Indian culture, though it’s subtle and quite interesting, one young kids will certainly enjoy.
