"My being for ever banished from your sight..." Who was this "...undutiful and Disobedient Child" who in 1756 penned a letter to her father in England? What had she done to so offend him? Why, as a well educated young girl, had she become an indentured servant? Why was she alone? In her letter, she pleads with her father to forgive her and to at least send her a bit of clothing. "...almost naked, no shoes nor stockings to wear." Here, within these pages, the mystery of Elizabeth Sprigs is revealed. It is a tale based on a single letter sent from Baltimore so long ago.

Exceptional fast moving historical novel for young adults By Amazon Customer I bought this on Amazon for my kids – mostly cause I loved the cover –I know, not a good reason to buy a book but thought it would get the attention ofmy 2 teenagers who really need to get away from fantasy and sci fi. Well surprise, they both loved it! Maybe ‘cause it wasn’t tediously long, maybe cause it was differentfrom their usual reads, and maybe to impress their teachers. It’s historic and based ona letter that was written in the 1700s by an indentured servant. Servants usually couldn’twrite back then so that was the first curiosity. Anyhow, I ended up reading it too and thoroughlyenjoyed it, most of all as it was based on a real letter written way back when. So myrecommendation is that if you’re in search of a fast moving historical novel for young adults, this might be just what you’ve been looking for.

The unintended resulting depth of her punishment gives us a realistic picture of the era that she lived in. I tried to imagine what it is that was so terrible that she had to struggle to survive every day. What is it she did? How is it that one jealous lie can affect another person's life so profoundly? In spite of it all, she loves her father and desperately tries to make him understand without upsetting him. I enjoyed reading "The Letter". I didn't put "The Letter" down until I found out the answers.
