Brazil was divided into fifteen captaincies under the reign of D. João III. Clarinha, daughter of the Captain of one of the greatest Captaincies, never really got a say on anything. Her life was planned out for her even before she was born into it. Every move. Every thought. None of it was her own. But everything changed when she heard coarse, hushed voices in the middle of the night. Nothing was the same as soon as she left her bed. She made her decision before she realized she had gotten one, and suddenly, everything began to change.
A tragic yet heartwarming story about a teenage girl trying to find herself in a world that wants to control her. Based on real history, this novel will move and inspire readers.

After only few pages I realized I was hooked to the story and longing for more. I found myself gently experiencing the whole range of emotions of the main character with feelings of anxiety, curiosity, fear, disillusion, sacrifice and courage. I also found myself inspired and looking for justice - for the character and for myself. One of the best books I have read this year. I am delighted with the style of the author. And I believe that her choice of such a theme for a first book is very promising. She is in the footsteps of Latin America's greatest - Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Jorge Amado.

By Tiago This short book from such a young author offers a compelling story and provides a convincing glimpse into Brazilian society -- and its inequities -- during earlier colonial times. The author is clearly a gifted storyteller, and I felt myself increasingly absorbed and gripped by her story and her characters -- I ended up reading the last half of the book in one sitting. Her prose is beautiful, and some passages were real gems. This is certainly a young author to keep an eye on!
