The trip starts out fine, although a few spooky stories and her lack of outdoor experience have Callie on edge. Things begin to go south when the group gets hopelessly lost and it becomes obvious that there is someone following them. When the group meets a solo hiker who claims to know how to get to a trail and a cabin, they agree to follow him. Yet things continue downhill as their food dwindles, their trust of one another and their mysterious guide wears thin, and whatever is stalking them is closing in and threatening their lives. Most chapters end on a cliff-hanger, and entries from the stalker's "Recovery Journal" are interspersed throughout, so readers know that there is a killer but don't know the identity. Scott builds constant tension, and the novel's events unfold like a horror movie. There is some violence and a high body count, so this title is not for the faint of heart. Or not.Opening Sentence: There’s no question things could have gone differently out there in those woods.The Review:To begin with, who in their right mind sends a bunch of seemingly clueless teenagers to go camping in the woods for five days? Bearing in mind that these kids appear to have very little, if any, knowledge on how to camp and between the four of them there is one compass. I can’t even remember them having a map, unless that got destroyed in the lake too.The story was far too predictable, with everything that could possibly go wrong on a camping trip actually taking place: a broken compass, losing the trail, thunderstorms, a limited food supply and no way to contact the world for help. This was coupled with an attempt at a horror movie by way of stumbling across broken dolls near the fire and hearing random outbreaks of manic laughter in the woods. The only problem was that I didn’t find this story in the least bit scary.Penelope shrugged. “A lot of people can’t deal with other people’s feelings. It’s like it’s too messy or something.”What Waits in the Woods is told from Callie’s perspective and I found her difficult to like or empathise with. I can’t say that I am an outdoorsy person but she was the least equipped of the group to possibly go on such a trip; always whining about her frizzy hair or messed up nails. For some reason, Callie thought that she could strengthen friendships with her new girlfriends by coming on the trip. Why she would go into unknown territory with no clue and zero research, dragging her boyfriend along and then still expect her friends to think she wasn’t incompetent is beyond me!The other girls weren’t too bad but Jeremy was too much of a suck up. There were a few other characters along the way but I don’t want to reveal anything spoiler-ish. On the plus side, it was interesting to discover their true colours when suspicion strikes and these friends begin doubting each other in the face of fear.Fear is such an insidious thing. It can take hold in an instant, but is the hardest thing to shake. It can inspire suspicion where there should be none and fracture even the tightest bonds.It can also be a very useful tool. Especially when one wants to divide and conquer.I liked the recovery journal, which were essentially entries from the killer. Scattering these entries throughout the book was a good way to emphasise the danger the teenagers are in and that it was only a matter of time before the maniac strikes.Kieran Scott makes a good attempt at building suspense, unfortunately, about halfway into the story I wished this killer would get on with it and murder everyone already. The suspense was dragging, and there was nothing frightening about it; in reality at times it verged on the line of comedy. The trapped teenagers annoyed me to the point that if they were going to be attacked I preferred it to be sooner. For me, the story went as follows: twig snap, freak out, ghost laughter, boy drama, freak out, broken dolls, boy drama (again), freak out, more laughter, freak out. I wanted to shout, ‘Just get on with it dude!’To my surprise, the ending was rather thrilling (that is if you managed to get that far without giving up!) The pace really picks up in the last 90 pages and there are some twists that are well played out. It was easy to predict the killer after the first murder but the back-story was good to know. The only reason I bumped up my rating to three stars was because I enjoyed the last few chapters, otherwise this would definitely have been a two star read.Notable Scene:She had never fought wither her friends back in Chicago. Not about anything more important than what movie to watch. And Jeremy was her first boyfriend. This situation was not something she knew how to deal with. The only things she knew for sure were that her boyfriend and best friends were all traitors and liars, she was stuck in the wilderness and reliant upon said traitors and liars, there was almost no food to share between them, and now? It was so deep, so anguished, so primal. I can still hear it now, and whenever I think about it, I shiver. It was perfect. Everything I went through before, during, and after the act was made worth it by that one scream.”What Waits in the Woods is a typical teen scream horror story. Friends go camping in the woods, things get scary, people end up dead. It’s very clean-cut with very few twists, but still had a bit of entertainment.Callie is new to the east coast and is very eager to stay tight with her new friends; Penelope and Lissa, even though she doesn’t do camping or anything outdoors. Honestly, she was so innocent, naive and worshiping of other characters she became annoying and I kept waiting for her to call out for her mother.Lissa is the “Perfect” of the group; know-it-all and have-it-all while her nose is snuggly in the air. Even though she has a boyfriend, she doesn’t have a problem openly flirting with others in front of her friends and even seems to dare them to give a care about her actions.Penelope is the “Groupie” of the bunch. The only reason she’s there is because Lissa told her that’s what they were doing. What really got annoying about Lissa and Penelope is even though they were “expert” hikers and campers, there’s so many things they did that was just plain stupid. From the food they brought with them, to the circumstances that got them lost, to the way they reacted to a snake crossing their path.Jeremy is the nerdy boy who has been best friends with Penelope for years, and is also Callie’s new boyfriend and the only boy allowed on the camping trip. At times his character seems a bit bi-polar, he switches moods so fast and at such a 180.The killer was easy to figure out, even with all the red herrings the author tried to let loose to confuse the reader. What I did like is the reader is given a glimpse into the killers POV by way of “recovery journal” entries that are small chapters throughout the book. These are what really added a nice change of pace to the story and a bit of creepiness. It’s full of moments where it’s just a bunch of whining teenagers running around through the woods, though.Overall, it’s a good story. If you like teenage drama and horror flicks, you might want to give this a chance.www.ReadingBifrost.com

She is Brazilian and wants to fit in with her upstate New York peers. She accepts an invitation to go camping in the hills with her boyfriend Jeremy and some popular students, Penelope and Lissa. Lissa initially comes across as the cliche popular blond and somewhat mean girl. Penelope, a wraithlike girl is a self admitted sidekick. She sticks to Lissa like a tick to a hound. Jeremy is a perfectly ordinary, all around nice guy.Once into the woods, these intrepid travelers have to figure their way out of the woods. A chance encounter with Ted, who introduces himself as being a park ranger's son throws their trip into a tailspin. A classmate named Zach appears unexpectedly. Callie appears to live by the Quarrymen (pre-Beatles') classic, "In Spite of All the Danger" where Jeremy is concerned. The campers start unraveling as it is clear they are not going to find their way back any time too soon. There is a casualty. Who, if any among them is responsible? And who has been writing journal entries which are interspersed throughout the book as chapter introductions?Hang onto your hats and glasses, folks. This is a trail you won't want to miss. You won't want to walk it, but you sure don't want to miss it either. The ending will catch you off guard. "In Spite of All the Danger" and the Eric Burden & the Animals' 1965 classic "We've Got to Get Out of This Place" could well be the sound track of this book.Kieran Scott is a gifted author and in her acknowledgements, she sends kudos to one of her cheerleaders, Beatle fan author Elizabeth Eulberg of The Lonely Hearts Club, From Me to You and We Can Work It Out (The Lonely Hearts Club) fame. Beatle fans who read this book will certainly notice that!
