A disturbing call from her great aunts Astrid and Jeannette sends seventeen-year-old Francie far from her new home in New York into a tangle of mysteries. Ditching an audition in a Manhattan theater, Francie travels to a remote lake in the northwoods where her aunts’ neighbors are “dropping like flies” from strange accidents. But are they accidents?

On the shores of Enchantment Lake in the woods of northern Minnesota, something ominous is afoot, and as Francie begins to investigate, the mysteries multiply: a poisoned hot dish, a puzzling confession, eerie noises in the bog, and a legendary treasure that is said to be under enchantment—or is that under Enchantment, as in under the lake? At the center of everything is a suddenly booming business in cabin sales and a road not everyone wants built.

To a somewhat reluctant northwoods Nancy Drew, the intrigue proves irresistible, especially when it draws her closer to the mysteries at the heart of her own life: What happened to her father? Who and where is her mother? Who is she, and where does her heart lie—in the bustle of New York City or the deep woods of Minnesota? With its gripping story, romantic spirit, and a sly dash of modern-day trouble (evil realtors and other invasive species), Enchantment Lake will fascinate readers, providing precisely the charm that Margi Preus’s readers have come to expect.

Enchantment Lake: A Northwoods Mystery, by Margi Preus

From School Library Journal Gr 6–10—A distressed phone call from her eccentric great aunts sends 17-year-old Francie rushing back to Enchantment Lake. Francie hasn't seen her aunts since her father died in an unexplained accident there 10 years ago. When she arrives, she finds her aunts safe but needing her help to solve the mystifying deaths of several members of the lakeside community. Are the deaths related to the resident's obstruction of a new road a mysterious personage plans to build, connecting the lakeside cabins to the rest of the world? Or are they really just accidents? Though she only briefly played a detective on TV, Francie finds herself almost unwillingly drawn into the role of sleuth. She manages to get herself into a few moderately scary situations, a few ridiculous ones, and even a couple of romantic ones. The quirky cast of characters in the community add color to this plot-driven story, though they lack much depth. The ending wraps up the main mystery nicely, while leaving just enough unanswered questions to imply a possible series continuation. VERDICT Fans of Nancy Drew and cozy mysteries will find much to appreciate in this story of a modern-day teen sleuth.—Genevieve Feldman, San Francisco Public Library

Review

"After playing a detective on TV, seventeen-year-old Francie travels to idyllic northern Minnesota to help her aunts. People are dying in strange accidents on Enchantment Lake, and the deaths seem to revolve around a treasure—could it be hidden at the bottom of the lake? In this charming first mystery, Francie finds the answers to most of her questions and even a bit of enchantment for herself." —Mary Logue, author of Lake of Tears and Sleep like a Tiger

"Minnesota’s master storyteller Margi Preus gives us another gem of a novel—funny and moving, gorgeously written, and suspenseful. As much as this book is an absorbing mystery, it’s also a deeply felt love letter to our uniquely enchanted northwoods. This is a book to lose yourself in." —Anne Ursu, author of Breadcrumbs and The Real Boy

By Stephanie Ward 3.5 Stars'Enchantment Lake' is a young adult mystery novel that's targeted for readers around the ages of 10-14. The story follows our heroine - Francie - as she travels to northern Minnesota to stay with her two great aunts, after receiving a disturbing phone call from them about their neighbors' mysterious deaths. Concerned for their safety and determined to figure out what exactly is going on, Francie heads to Enchantment Lake and finds herself mixed up in the strangest mysteries she's seen: from poisoned food and creepy unexplainable noises coming from the bog, to the legend of a treasure that's said to be in an enchantment - and mixed up in the middle of it all is a business making a lot of money in selling cabins and a road that nobody in the area seems to want built. Will Francie be able to figure out the mystery that ties all of these odd events together - before anyone else dies? It's easy to tell right from the beginning that this book is geared toward younger readers - more middle grade and young YA. As soon as I started reading, I felt that the story had more of a Nancy Drew vibe to it rather than a more serious and mature mystery novel. The main character - Francie - is a seventeen-year-old who, in my opinion, doesn't act her age. Her dialogue - both inner and with other characters - isn't very mature, which only deepened my feelings of her not quite synching up with her age in the story. She's a good main character - smart, a very loving and devoted niece, down to earth, and determined to see things through. There's not much character growth for her - or any other characters - throughout the book. Francie's great-aunts are an interesting pair of sisters and serve as some comic relief during the book. The plot was pretty predictable - especially if you read the description and paid even a little attention to the details in the story. I basically knew what was going to happen before I cracked the book open - but, then again, this book is geared more for younger teens and their reading level. The mysteries that Francie has to solve throughout the story are minor and I didn't even have to think it out to know what was going on. For the target audience though, I think the mysteries would be a great asset to the story and would help them be more immersed in the book. The author uses great details and vivid imagery throughout the book that made it easy to imagine Francie's world. I didn't exactly slip inside of the author's world, but I could definitely see how a younger reader would be able to. The story is told from a third person point-of-view, which made it feel more distant and unrealistic, in my opinion. If it was told in a first person POV with Francie as the narrator, I think it would have engaged me more and may have pulled me into the story a little more. Overall, this was a good book with solid writing and a rounded plot. It was very obvious from the beginning (for me) that the novel is targeted to younger teens and middle grade readers. Being an adult and not used to reading books on this level, I wasn't able to get the maximum experience that a reader who is in the target age range would have. Looking at it from that standpoint, it's a good mystery novel with fun characters and interesting occurrences, and is a well rounded story that mixes together action, adventure, mystery, and a bit of suspense and will leave the reader wanting to solve more mysteries with Francie.Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I loved the cover SO much By Missie Schumaier - A Flurry of Ponderings I dropped by a local bookstore when I was at the cabin a month ago and they had a wall of Minnesota authors displayed. I have seen the cover of Enchantment Lake around the blog world, so I grabbed it. I loved the cover SO much. So I figured, even if the book wasn’t amazing, the cover would be awesome to have on my bookshelf.Likes:The writing was very easy to read. I actually finished the book pretty quickly out on the boat the same afternoon I bought it. I like nice, easy reads because I often get interrupted to reel in a fish or net one for my hubby.Francie’s aunts were awesome. I love eccentric aunts – like Blue’s family from The Raven Boys. They were goofy, half out of their gourd but actually all together in the end.I would LOVE to live on the lake described. My cabin is not super accessible either, but this one you have to boat across the lake to get to the cabin. I would love the dense tree cover and tight relationship with everyone on the lake. It would be SO peaceful. Plus, there was a small island – I love islands! There was some Minnesota humor and vocab in the book. It is always fun to read a book about places you know and traditions you uphold. The mystery was fun, it was a bit odd and goofy, which I enjoy. I would have liked it fleshed out a bit more, but I think that came with the genre.Gripes:I felt like there were some huge age issues / maturity / lifestyle. I think that the MC should have been a college student, but it kept going back to more of a role with some high school, going into college. It was a weird mix. Plus, she was a previous actress on a TV show – so I just felt like the author was trying to engage a few genres and it ended up being confusing.I think the reading level the author was trying to reach was about middle grade to early high school. It just didn’t really make sense with the age of the characters and the content. I believe this is the first non-children’s book she wrote, so I can see the issues coming up. I think it is something her editors should have caught though.

A Good Mystery for Middle Graders By Maxine McLister When 17-year-old Francie receives an urgent phone call from her great-aunts, she immediately flies from New York to Minneapolis to check on them. According to them, there has been a rash of odd accidents on Enchantment Island where they live... except they're convinced these were no accidents and what's worse, they're convinced that they'll be next. Francie, a struggling actor, had once played a detective on TV and now her aunts think she's a real PI and they want her to investigate. Although she is sure her aunts, who have always been a little eccentric are just being paranoid, she promises to look into it. Soon she begins to suspect that they may be onto something - not only are there a whole lot of very weird but deadly accidents but it seems like all of the victims had recently sold their property to a local real estate broker with the proviso that they can remain on their properties for the rest of their lives. She soon discovers that many of the other inhabitants have also sold their properties with the same proviso. In fact, there are few other holdouts besides her aunts and, as the body count rises, Francie begins to suspect she is in a race against time if she is to save not only her aunts but the island itself.Despite the high body count, Enchantment Lake by author Margi Preus is aimed at a fairly young YA audience (11 - 16) and perhaps even younger. It reminded me a great deal of the old Trixie Belden books that were popular with girls in the mid-20th c.: the murders themselves are not portrayed; there is little violence until near the end when the perpetrator is finally unmasked and that is quickly dealt with by Francie with the aid of a couple of friends; and none of the main characters dies. There is a bit of romance here but it is definitely of the G-rating variety. It is always hard to know how to rate a book like this since I am definitely way outside the target audience. Not to say I didn't enjoy the story. Francie is likeable and, if at times, she seems a bit obtuse like `go for a boat ride to the middle of the lake alone at night with a suspected killer' obtuse, she is feisty and fun to watch as she struggles to play the role of a real detective to please her aunts. As an adult and having lived fairly close to northern Minnesota on the other side of the border, I particularly enjoyed Preus' descriptions of the beauty of the area - certainly more than I did the mystery which I suspect due to the age of the intended audience, never seems to engender much tension. However, the story is very well-written and I'm guessing it will have strong appeal with its target audience so, with that in mind, 3.5 stars it is.
