A spy sabotages the demonstration of an experimental magical airship. The explosion kills nearly a hundred people. Among the dead are an imperial princess, a bishop, and most of the family of the wizard Lord Harlow Tammadore, cousin to the airship’s designer and himself an arcane consultant on the ship’s ground breaking propulsion artifice. Teaming with the Imperial Knight, Zorrah Pestle, and charged with bringing the perpetrator of the deaths to justice, Harlow seeks revenge for his family’s death. Together, Harlow and Zorrah uncover a conspiracy involving a rebellious prince about to undergo a ritual that will make him an undead of unspeakable power, a mysterious dragon with a secret agenda all his own, and the development of the most powerful weapon of magic the world has ever known.

By Book Knurd I admit I have little interest in fantasy fiction and am only moderately interested in the thriller genre. So you might conclude that the Artifice Conspiracy, “a fantasy thriller”, would be well outside of my wheel house. Generally speaking, it is. But in an effort to support a local author as well as one of the few remaining local independent bookstores, I picked up a copy. What I discovered was a story chock full of lords and ladies, moats and castles, and enchanted swords and knightly armor. There was also much ado about wards and spells, wizards and magic crystals, and even a dragon and a magical airship. No surprise there. But remove all the medieval settings and the magical contrivances and what you’re left with is a good ole fashioned ‘we must thwart the bad guy before he/she can fulfill his/her dastardly master plan’ thriller. And a pretty good one at that.On the whole, I was pleasantly surprised. Yahola’s writing is in league with most mainstream authors, the narrative is quick and tight, and the story is pretty darn compelling. The quality of the writing and an interesting story encouraged me to finish all 400 pages in relatively short order – no small feat for a slow reader like me.The one thing I will call out as…distracting, was the volume of names that are thrown at the reader. Is that a thing with the fantasy genre or just with this book? Holy crap! The author gives the name of every servant, merchant, horse, weapon, city, town, building, brother, sister, father, mother, cousin twice removed, no matter how insignificant they will prove to be. Mind boggling. Eventually you learn not to commit too many of the names to memory as most don’t last until the next chapter or ultimately have little impact on the story. The Artifice Conspiracy is a stellar effort that hopefully will encourage this first-time author to become a second-time author.

I must admit as a person who owned a comic book store and is probably way to hard on local artists, I loved this. It was fun fast paced and an interesting read. Just fun. This was a fantasy novel unlike most that I read. I can't recommend this enough. If you like interesting stories with unique plotlines, this is for you. This just may be my xmas present to my fellow comic nerds this year. I'm ready for follow up novels. Just get a better editor.
