Danger descends in the second book of The Internment Chronicles, from the New York Times bestselling author of The Chemical Garden trilogy. After escaping Internment, Morgan and her fellow fugitives land on the ground to finally learn about the world beneath their floating island home. The ground is a strange place where water falls from the sky as snow, and people watch moving pictures and visit speakeasies. A place where families can have as many children as they want, their dead are buried in vast gardens of bodies, and Internment is the feature of an amusement park. It is also a land at war. Everyone who fled Internment had their own reasons to escape their corrupt haven, but now they’re caught under the watchful eye of another king who wants to dominate his world. They may have made it to the ground, but have they dragged Internment with them?

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—Continuing where Perfect Ruin (S. & S., 2013) left off, the characters feel and fight the constraints of the new kingdom in which they find themselves. Morgan, Pen, Princess Celeste, and the rest have ridden the Metal Bird from their troubled kingdom of Internment in the sky and have landed on the outskirts of the city of Havalais. They have landed in the middle of "winter," a completely unfamiliar time full of cold and frozen water falling from the sky. During this dire season, the young people of Internment are hosted by Jack Piper, advisor to the king, and his five children. The cold isn't the only thing that hinders their comings and goings as King Ingram has recently begun a war with a neighboring kingdom—a war that may have implications for Internment and her people, whether above or below. Despite the threat of rocket attacks, Morgan and Pen join "Birdie" Piper in secret night journeys into the city to enjoy silent picture shows and clubs that hearken back to the 1920s. DeStefano's characters have little power to affect their fates with their actions, so talk and diplomacy are their only outlets. By removing opportunities for action, the author allows her characters to reveal more of themselves to one another and to readers. The author's fans will want to read this nuanced second volume in "The Internment Chronicles," but it should also appeal to teens who appreciate emotionally charged and character-driven novels.—Eric Norton, McMillan Memorial Library, Wisconsin Rapids, WI
Review "Fans of the dystopian genre will enjoy" (VOYA February 2015)"Readers will be eager to learn if worlds figuratively—or perhaps literally—collide" (Booklist February 2015)"Fans will want to read this nuanced second volume" (School Library Journal December 2014)

Lyrical Prose and Great Characters By Cherie Reads When I read Perfect Ruin, the first book in this series, I liked it, but I wasn't blown away by it. It was a middle of the road three stars. I thought the writing was spectacular and there was some good world building, but it just moved way too slowly and not a whole lot happened until the very end. I love Lauren DeStefano's writing and I was holding out hope that Burning Kingdoms would build on what was started in the first book and develop the characters a little more and pick up the pace a bit. I'm very happy to report that this second book is a definite improvement on the first. The writing in this book is just so good. Lauren has a way with words that very few writers have. Her prose is lyrical and sometimes poetic. It's really just a joy to read. She has this magical way of putting words together that's hard to describe. For example, here's one of my favorite paragraphs:"She is a woman slowly being realized. Her father is afraid of that, and I'd like to tell her so, but I don't know how to say the words in a way that would make sense. I don't know how to explain that we have more power than we know. We are young and bright and waiting to see what we are capable of. The ocean's mist has caused our hair to frizz around our faces, and I wish that I could hold this moment still, because it is perfect."The characters and their relationships are also much more developed in this book. New friendships are made, old ones start to fade. Things happen that are not always comfortable and neat between people. These characters seemed very real to me. More so than in the first book.Where this book lacks, and why I didn't give it 5 stars, is in its plot. It all makes sense and the pacing is better than in the first book, but I still felt like not a whole lot actually happened. There are some exciting and plot changing scenes that were great, but as a whole, this book is much more about the characters than it is about the actual plot-line. I would have liked more story development.Overall, this book is worth a read for the writing style alone. I enjoyed the story and loved the characters and am looking forward to the third book in the series.Note: I received a copy of this book for free from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

Lyrical prose hides a total lack of substance in this sequel to Perfect Ruin By Sharon Ho I am wondering if the other reviewers read the same book I did. Lyrical prose can only take you so far, and nothing of importance actually happens until the last 10th of the book. A disappointing sequel to an interesting universe in Perfect Ruin.

The book starts out shortly after book one lefts off. Were on the ground. We find out that they have mermaids, and other creatures that well we don't have and of course the sky people don't have either. It is a pretty good pace for the book all the way through until you start getting to the end. Then all H** kinda breaks loose. From the war that is raging on the ground, to Celeste starting to have feelings for the oldest child of the kings right hand man to the ground trying to get back to Interment. This book really gets fast towards the last pages. It doesn't end on a cliffhanger like book one did. So although I am excited to get book three next year (hoping) I won't be crying my eyes out until then.Towards the end this one also hints at a love triangle (a good one)...Kinda not even a love triangle. Its kinda hard to explain without giving the story away. But someone decides that she needs a new path. I so can't wait to see what they do with that in book three.I really also hope that we get to see learn more about the world of the ground. Beyond the little that we know. And again I really love the UK cover!!! The one above is not as pretty. Go Into This One KnowingGood paced then fast!!!, hints of a love triangle (but a good one), no cliffhanger
