Spada-basto As a Colonial Hartford history buff and a middle school Social Studies teacher in the Greater Hartford area, I have done a fair share of research on the Hartford Witch Trials. I was shocked and dismayed at Betty Nearing's rendition of the story of Elizabeth Seager. Nearing states that this book is a creative "nonfiction" piece.I personally love reading historical fiction and creative nonfiction. Yet one of the rules of both these genres is that you can't change the facts! Unfortunately, Ms. Nearing has so many of the facts wrong here that this should be listed as misrepresented fiction.Puritan Hartford was never called "a village". They had no "vicars". Further, Puritans in 17th century had no oil lamps for example. Ms. Nearing claims she did a great deal of research on the subject. Unfortunately, she did not research Hartford in the colonial times enough. As regards the Hartford Witch Trials, Nearing has many facts just plain wrong! Judith Varlet was never married at this point and was not saved by her husband. Rather, her brother was married to Gov. Stuyvesant's sister. It's also a stretch to state that Ann Cole who was the accuser was also a witch and friends with Goody Seager. There is no evidence that Ann Cole was considered a witch, accused of witchcraft and danced in the woods! It's one thing to read a boring history book that states just the dry facts. I completely agree. However, it's another thing to misrepresent history and call it creative non-fiction. Authors have an obligation to creatively tell the story but when you change pertinent facts this is a major no no. Although the second part of the book flowed a bit more realistically than the first part and yes, I understand Ns. Nearing is a relation to Goody Seager, it's important to check your research and to make sure you do not include things that were never possible in 17th century Puritan New England.I do know that Elizabeth was much younger than her husband but once again, having her father, a Founding Father of Hartford give permission to have his 14 year old daughter marry a 54 year old man is unrealistic. Most Puritan girls married around 18. Unfortunately, the dialogue throughout the book sounded as if it were straight out the 20th century. This was a disappointing read. Although I realize people enjoy reading creative nonfiction, as a teacher facts should be researched and not changed unless you consider the work fiction. Otherwise, one's integrity is in doubt!

I bought my copy for my Kindle and that was a mistake. Whatever Amazon (or ?) does to reformat the book for Kindle readers certainly did not work at all well. There are sentences and even whole paragraphs missing and the wording is disjointed.Don't blame the author, or the editor, as I have picked up hard copies to examine and they are fine. In summary, it's a book well worth reading; just don't bother to buy it for the Kindle, as it becomes a frustrating struggle.

Elizabeth Seagar is not your average protagonist -- she has her flaws -- and at times I felt sympathy for her kind husband, Richard. At the same time, what she endured at the hands of the law and the society at the time would not be believable, were it not true. This is what makes this story a page-turner. Wonderfully researched and a thoroughly enjoyable read, right to the end.
