Reminiscent of Shine by Lauren Myracle and Jay Asher's Thirteen Reasons Why, you'll race through this YA novel as seventeen-year-old Dinah pieces together the mystery that surrounds the near death of her fourteen-year-old cousin Claire. While Claire is holding on her for her life in the hospital, Dinah goes in search of the boy Claire writes about in her journal. The boy who forced her to do something she didn't want to do. The boy who caused her such humiliation that the thought of having to live one more day was just too much. Dinah is on a mission for revenge, but as things start to unfold, her plan isn't as simple as it seemed."McQuein's talent shines in this compelling character study."--Kirkus"All in all, a very satisfying read and I would highly recommend it."--Exmainer.com "This book will likely appeal to young teen readers who enjoy action-oriented mysteries. . . There is plenty of room for a facilitator-led discussion regarding choices made by the characters throughout the story, as it addresses heavy topics that some readers could use help processing."--VOYA"McQuein's subplots give the story added substance, and Dinah's broken relationship with her mother underpins much of the novel's psychological dimension and offers moments of powerful storytelling."--Publisher's Weekly

About the Author JOSIN MCQUEIN was born and raised in Texas, where she used novel writing as a way to escape when she needed a break from caring for ailing relatives. Now she and her three crazy dogs live in a town so small the buffalo outnumber the people, and things like subways or consistent Internet access are fictional creations of the faraway fantasy-land known as civilization.

Not as good as I wanted it to be but still really, really good By Paige See more of my reviews on The YA Kitten!Premeditated was probably my most highly anticipated standalone novel of 2013. Vengeance story, you say? SOLD. Nothing gets me more than a good vengeance story. The novel isn't exactly what I would it would be based on what I'd heard, but it's still a great contemporary YA/mystery. Even Dinah's difficult personality and how much energy it takes to simply let her be without criticizing her for her numerous, later-admitted flaws aren't enough to stop this book from being worth the read! The jacket copy makes it sound like Premeditated is going to be a really screwed-up book and dark as can be, but it's a very different book inside. Dinah's pursuit of the boy she believes pushed her darling cousin Claire to suicide is immature at times in the lengths she goes to (like spiking foods to give the guy a false positive on a drug test), but it works. Her single-minded personality and utterly rapturous descriptions of what it feels like to be her when the cousin she loves more than anything is fighting for her life in the hospital make it all work. Her character is not a kind one or an easy one; it is a character that must simply be taken as it is. More humorous moments usually provided by her best friends Tabitha and Brucey keep things balanced, as does an improbable romance between Dinah and Brooks. The way she describes Chandi, one of Brooks' friends, for most of the novel really grated on me because she was falling just short of sex-shaming (using that term now instead of slut-shaming for reasons) and Dinah pretty much does sex-shame late in the novel, but thankfully, Chandi's character gets a good, thorough flip and a whole lot of depth. I loved Chandi before because I knew she was getting a bad deal, but once she had her big scene with Dinah toward the end of the book, I wanted to keep her.Readers are probably going to see the truth of the mess long before Dinah does and that can be a little frustrating, no doubt. I accidentally spoiled myself before reading the novel and knew it the whole time, so I'm not a good judge of it, but it didn't bother me too much. Because I knew what, I wanted to know why even though I was pretty sure I'd answered that question on my own too. This novel definitely doesn't have the sort of mystery that keeps you in the dark until its resolution. It does have a very satisfying resolution, though. It's bittersweet, but justice will be served. It's really a shame this book hasn't gotten more promotion because it's good. Really, really good. It means taking Dinah's single-minded way of doing things and the way she ignores obvious signs as they are even though those are difficult traits to simply let lie, but it's so worth it in the end. I'm definitely up for some more contemporaries from her. I'm already in for her next book, which is the second in a series with another publisher.

Dinah goes "under cover" at a fancy prep school to find the boy who caused Clare to slit her wrists. She carefully observes the students to find the culprit, his friends, the ones he cares about.. so she can bring him down. There were so many parts of this book that I adored. I loved Dinah as a character. She's smart, funny, and imperfect. But the characters who really stood out for me were her Uncle Paul and her father. They were AMAZING parents and I loved some of their lines."Dinah? What's going on in-- Oh, you're smothering Brucey. There's superglue under the sink if you break something."--Uncle PaulBut truly, all the characters in this book were brilliant in different ways. I loved to absolutely loathe Dinah's horrendous mother. I loved to cheer with pride when Dinah's dad finally started standing up to her mother. I felt guilty and unsure when I started falling for the culprit..Dinah and her friends start small and then build their way up to make the culprit's life a living hell. They didn't want some big, quick reveal. They wanted to slowly rip his life apart from the inside so that he was just as tortured as poor Claire. But even as this is happening, we don't know all the details surrounding Claire until much later. Exactly what happened with her is slowly unraveled over the course of the book. The one thing that was a bit of a disappointment was how predictable the ending was. I figured it out no later than 50% (it might have been a bit earlier--I don't remember exactly). Although that didn't leave me bored with the rest of the book, it was starting to get a tiny bit frustrating when I knew exactly what would happen but Dinah STILL hadn't figured it out. I think that if I didn't know exactly what was going to happen so early on, this book would have gotten that extra half star. An epic twist at the end would have really put the cherry on top of a great book, but it didn't feel like a twist to me when I saw it coming.Premeditated is so strong and so powerful. It's about revenge, self discovery, family problems, predators, coping with loss, and so much more. We really see Dinah grow and develop as a character. And the end... THE END! Well, it's not quite the end but it's a moment before the end.. it had me drowning in tears and refusing to believe that it actually happened. I kept wanting some sort of sci-fi miracle because it was just too sad!I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants a strong contemporary book about friendship, family, and revenge. There's a lot more to it than just a revenge story, so go into it expecting a bit more. But that's one of the things that makes it so great! If only the ending was a bit less predictable...

Horrible By Azul Thank God I got this book from the library!Imagine a gothic Dinah morphing into a Barbie to make the guy that allegadly hurt her cousin fall for ther to point of, well, I expect killing himself.Cool, eh? Well, that is NOT what I got here, although it is what the summary led me to believe. All I got from old Dinah was the mention that she had black hair and wore a belt with big buckle on her hip. Unfortunately, the story starts with an already blond Dinah determined to bring justice because... Apparently she loves her cousin? I don't know where this love came from and why she had to take upon herself to elicit justice.Anyway, skip to page 288 where Dinah-not-Diana finally faces Brooks and "what he did." Because let's face it, you know from page two that Brook could not have been the culprit, yet Dinah didn't see that until 10 pages before the end of the story... when she finally decide to check her cousin's cell phone. Lame.
