The Labyrinth of the Scriptorium is a mystery thriller set in modern Europe while scanning back to the European medieval period. Logic upon logic is required of the reader’s reasoning skills in order to unravel the secrets locked within the novel’s multi-layered structure. The story follows the exploits of Professor Tomii who stumbles upon a mysterious painting by a deceased Japanese artist in Switzerland. The painting of the Siege of Montségur, a final battle fought in southern France in the 13th century by the Cathars, a medieval Christian sect, draws Professor Tomii deeper and deeper into the mysterious circumstances of the painting, the artist, and an unsolved murder that the artist witnessed. In the classic styles of Umberto Eco, Agatha Christie and Ellery Queen, author Hitoshi Goto weaves a substantial and complex tale that keeps the reader stumbling through mazes of rationales and counter-rationales. The mysteries in the Labyrinth of the Scriptorium are finally totally unlocked in Mr. Goto’s subsequent novel Gutenberg-Dämmerung (Twilight of Gutenberg). The Labyrinth of the Scriptorium was awarded the prestigious Ayukawa Tetsuya Award in 2002, Japan’s most renowned literary award for mystery novels.

I love myself a good mystery, but I have to admit that even I could not figure all of this out. There is so much to be interpreted in this story. As in any good mystery, the author attempts to confuse the reader. Believe me, this book can be quite confusing, but not so much that it makes you give up on the reading all together. Be prepared to enter a story that provides you with another story and a mystery within that story as well. It is very easy to get confused, but by the end of the book the reader is able to make better associations. I love the ending! What a unique way to end the book! I am looking forward to the continuation. To the reader, be forewarned, though this is a mystery, there is much danger, deception, and murder within these pages. I could not put this book down. Though confusing, it is fast paced. I would recommend this book to adult mystery lovers and to young adult mystery lovers who feel that they are up for the challenge. This is also a great rainy day book, just keep the lights on! I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Hitoshi Goto's mystery novel is brilliantly executed and well layered in creativity and suspense By DOTRAZN Hitoshi Goto's mystery novel is brilliantly executed and well layered in creativity and suspense. Unfortunately I was lost more than a few times attempting to solve the mystery without providing my ebook my full attention. What is left is a frustrating attempt to read, then reread whole chapters to make sure I was playing along successfully. after putting it down, then rereading with a fresh perspective and clear mind, I was able to absorb the historical details of Europe and focus on just the facts. This helped create a legitimate attempt to read this book. I was pleasantly surprised but still frustrated by the twists thrown my way.I find the pleasure reader derive from mystery novels to be a lot like hot sauce. Some will always demand the most powerful and overwhelming hot sauce due to their tolerance and experience. Some merely enjoy the more conservatively mild version and will enjoy it from time to time. I fall in the latter group when it comes to mystery novels. I have a healthy respect towards mystery novel authors and readers for their dedication and passion for the genre. I however remain a passive reader. The Labyrinth of the Scriptorioum is obviously a great novel. It just was not great for this reader who has trouble staying engaged when prose seemed thick and very well detailed. All in all, this was a fun read. I just highly recommend you allow yourself ample time to wrap your head around what Goto is trying to show and or hide from us on these pages. By Nautilius Writer As a former bookseller at a mystery bookshop, I’ve read and recommended tons of mysteries to our mystery-loving customers from Stieg Larsson’s Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series, to Don Winslow’s fantastic works set in drug-addled, sunny Southern California. The Labyrinth of the Scriptorium is lush, richly descriptive and reminiscent of Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code, which also draws from art history and medieval European history. However, Hitoshi Goto’s mystery also combines characters and the history of Japan, which I thought was particularly unique, something I’ve never really seen before in the mystery genre. Hitoshi Goto provides a dramatis personae, or cast of characters along with short descriptions at the beginning of the book, which allowed for easy reference as I began to attempt to untangle the labyrinth of this well-thought out mystery. I would definitely recommend this mystery for readers, new and seasoned!I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
