Chinese Yankee by Ruthanne Lum McCunn tells the true story of Hong Kong born Thomas Sylvanus (Ah Yee Way), an orphan brought to America for schooling in the mid-1850s, but enslaved in Baltimore. Only sixteen at the outbreak of war, Thomas ran north, joined the Freedom Army, and was blinded in the first major campaign. He failed to fully recover his sight and, deemed incapable of performing the duties of a soldier, was discharged. Yet he reenlisted twice, saved his regiment's colors during the bloodbath of Spotsylvania, was lamed at Cold Harbor, and survived 9 months imprisonment in the dreaded Andersonville stockade. His health broken, but his spirit intact, he battled for survival and justice for his family and himself until his death in 1891. He was, as the New York Times noted, "singular."

Nimmo "Chinese Yankee" is Ruthanne Lum McCunn’s most recent addition to her excellent chronicle of Chinese Americans through historical fiction. This book is the story of Ah Yee Way (aka Thomas Sylvanus) including his forced departure from Hong Kong in 1854 at age eight with a missionary matron, his escape from bondage in Baltimore, his participation in the Civil War where he sustained near blindness injuries, his imprisonment at Andersonville, his marriage and family, and his early death in 1891. The page-turner story is told in a series of fast-paced vignettes that escort the reader through the remarkable life of Ah Yee Way. Especially memorable are the scenes from the Civil War. McCunn spares the reader none of the gory bloodshed of that awful conflict. Many of the scenes are horrific but the violence is incorporated into the fast-paced action and is not gratuitous in any way. The visual format of the book enhances the pace of the story and the present tense of the narration adds immediacy to the events. Maps scattered throughout the text help the reader follow the sometimes tortuous journey of the protagonist. Not only is "Chinese Yankee" a great story but it is also an important addition to Chinese American history and the overlooked (unknown to most people) participation of Chinese Americans in the Civil War. Fans of Ruthanne Lum McCunn will welcome this new book and first-time readers of her work will be searching for her earlier titles.

This is a man who, with a quiet, powerful dignity, perseveres and rights many wrongs. He, a lone and unique face amongst the masses, changes hearts and minds, and our country. Though often shackled, he, literally and figuratively, crosses mountains and oceans to get to a better place. He inspires the future. The Chinese Yankee is an American hero.

An incredible story of fortitude and moral courage. I don't want to provide spoilers but you need to know that ths will inform how you feel about immigrants forever. The writing fully immerses you in the period and Ms McCunn nicely judges the amount of background information you need to understand the events without impeding the narrative flow. Bravo!
