The Blue Mountain (The Forbidden List Book 2), by G R Matthews

About the Author G R Matthews began reading in the cot. His mother, at her wits end with the constant noise and unceasing activity, would plop him down on the soft mattress with an encyclopaedia full of pictures then quietly slip from the room. His father, ever the pragmatist, declared, that they should, "throw the noisy bugger out of the window." Happily, this event never came to pass (or if it did, he bounced well). Growing up, he spent Sunday afternoons on the sofa watching westerns and Bond movies with the self-same parent who had once wished to defenestrate him. When not watching the six-gun heroes or spies being out-acted by their own eyebrows, he devoured books like a hungry wolf in the dead of winter. Beginning with Patrick Moore and Arthur C Clarke he soon moved on to Isaac Asimov. However, one wet afternoon in a book shop in his home town, not far from the standing stones of Avebury, he came across a book by David Eddings - and soon Sci-Fi gave way to Fantasy. Many years later, G R Matthews finally realised a dream and published his own fantasy novel, The Stone Road, in the hopes that other hungry wolves out there would find a hearty meal. Matthews second book in the The Forbidden List trilogy is a gem I knew would be wonderful after reading the Stone Road By Beester Mr. Matthews second book in the The Forbidden List trilogy is a gem I knew would be wonderful after reading the Stone Road, first book in the trilogy. Mr. Matthews is an independent author who surprised me a while back after I read his first work. I sat perplexed trying to understand how a “new” author could write something so polished and enticing and not have been picked up by a major publishing house. My views on traditional publishing were shattered because of this. I have read all of his short stories/novellas that he put out in between the first and second work of The Forbidden List trilogy. Which allows the reader to gain a better understanding of the two main characters Zhou the diplomat and Haung the warrior/spy. I highly recommend reading them which will enrich your understanding of the characters and the world that Mr. Matthews has built. We find Zhou and Haung where The Stone Road left off. Zhou with heartache, confusion and such anger that it might consume him and often comes close to that throughout the book. Haung is in the Emperor’s employ and continues his training sharpening his tradecraft while balancing a new family and greater and greater responsibility. The Empire is under threat by an unknown enemy that is not only attacking on traditional fronts but also through the spirit realm. The magic system is based upon “steps” towards the spirit realm. This allows for a depth of magic use that compliments the plot and story line of each character but does not overshadow the human element that persist throughout the book. I have read some authors that the magic system is a crutch to solve, sustain and propel plot/drama but Mr. Matthews does not use it for that purpose. The magic system is set to compliment all of the elements in the book that lead to a couple of suspenseful crescendos. Case is point, one of my comments from Goodreads as I was reading the book:"Alright Mr. Matthews, a crescendo of action, greater depth of characters, introducing new elements of characters then back to a calm although suspenseful atmosphere and environment. Stop wanking with my emotions/expectations good sir. “The depth of characters did cause me to raise my eyebrow a bit. The Stone Road introduced us to Zhou and Haung but didn’t go incredibly deep into the psychology/sociology of their being. I was interested to see how Mr. Matthews would tackle this in The Blue Mountain and I was excited to read page after page and see the characters bestow a greater depth with each turn. The careful analytical side of Haung and Zhou’s internal turmoil at losing his wife and child were both explored and portrayed with an excellence that I was not sure if Mr. Matthews would pull off. Mr. Matthews did pull it off and moved both characters to a greater depth of understanding and a plateau where the reader can identify and get behind them rooting them on chapter after chapter. It is rare that I give 5 stars to any book I read. It has to be spectacular or “bloody brilliant” in several aspects for me to hover over that 5th star. The Blue Mountain earned all 5 stars and wish there was a sixth. The progress that Mr. Matthews has made as an author is inspiring and if allowed can lift one’s spirit to know that he truly loves his craft and will inspire others to put forth the hard effort to write their own story. I highly recommend reading The Blue Mountain to all.Bravo Mr. Matthews, Bravo!!
