The story begins as a young John Walsh struggles to come to grips with the forced removal of several neighboring families from their traditional homesteads near Tullamore Village, Ireland during the early 1840’s. He finds the practice of eviction and forced emigration to be cruel and inhuman, destroying the lives of his friends and neighbors. He has lost faith in his God, his religion, and worst of all, his future. Talk within the family is very dark about the days to come. Even his sister, Eileen, gets a chilling omen for the future of their family while tending the family potato patch. Out of desperation, Peter, the middle son of the family, gets involved with an outlaw group calling themselves ‘The Young Irelanders’, the historical predecessors of the current IRA. John hesitantly accompanies his brother to a number of secret meetings of the group where the news of the country is discussed and lamented. Being a group of ideological Irish lads, discussion is not enough for many of the members who believe that they must take vengeance for the ills of their country into their own hands. The group subsequently plots the razing of a team of English Land Agents who are terrorizing the countryside with evictions and torment. During the late night plot against the agents, the razing gets out of hand, ending in the murder of all three Englishmen. Unfortunately, Peter is recognized and arrested for his activities during the raid. The lad is then quickly sentenced to the political prison at the Botany Bay Colony in Australia and deported without any further contact with his family. Soon afterward, the blight hits the Walsh family’s potato crop, destroying their only sustenance. The family struggles on the edge of starvation, surviving day by day as the blight devastates their family, friends, and neighbors. The story then goes on to chronicle numerous misfortunes and dangers of the Walsh family as they fight for survival in a dying land. Everyone is affected by the burden of starvation, homelessness, and stark poverty. Many more of the poorest of the Irish are forced from family homes and farms to die on the roads and in the fields of Ireland. From the Shores of Eternity is a well-researched book, depicting the actual horrors of life in the times of the ‘Great Hunger’ and the subsequent forced emigration from their ancestral homes on 'Coffin Ships' to the New World. The dark message that carries the story gives way to the promise of a new horizon on the shores of a new and mysterious land. The storyline revolves around actual occurrences and news articles of contemporary life during the famine years. From the Shores of Eternity is the frank, dark tale of survival in brutal times, under an occupying enemy who turned a blind eye on a culture that the victors deem barbaric.
