A coming-of-age story, a tapestry of erotic and tragic liaisons, a dreamscape of nightmares and wonders. But Ceremony is, above all, a tribute to the ceremony-rich life of the Benuaq Dayak, one of the many “upriver people” of Kalimantan. This post-modern (and first) novel by Korrie Layun Rampan took Indonesian literary scene by storm when it won the Jakarta Arts Council’s novel writing competition award in 1977. After winning the award, Korrie continued to establish himself as one of Indonesia’s major literary figures, but four decades later, Ceremony still has the power to thrill, awe, and mystify readers. This edition is graced by an informative introduction by noted French scholar, Bernard Sellato, on the rituals of the Benuaq Dayak people. It also contains a critique of the original edition by Indonesian poet and translator Dodong Djiwapradja.

For western readers Indonesian culture itself presents many exotic features, but this novel, set in the remote tribal areas of distant Indonesian Borneo, is exotic even to the Indonesian reader. The power of “Ceremony” springs from what the title makes clear: the role of ceremony in the lives of the Benuaq Dayak people. Readers of novels by or about aboriginal peoples in many other parts of the world—Native Americans, First Nations in Canada, aboriginal groups in Latin America or Australia—already understand something about the role of ceremony in the culture and very philosophy of life and cosmic vision of the universe and its dark forces. “Ceremony” describes in vivid personal terms, as narrated in the voice of a Dayak adolescent, the mysteries concealed in multiple life ceremonies embracing illness, healing, dreams, protection from evil, rebirth, death, sexuality and marriage. We come to understand firsthand the centralit y of communal ceremony at the heart of Dayak life, without which nothing can happen and nothing possesses meaning. Ceremony invokes spirits, magical relationships, the power of the complex unknown world over human life. The author, Korrie Layun Rampan, himself comes from such a tribal background in the jungles of Kelantan, but went on to receive education and eventually to lead a distinguished professional career as writer, international journalist, translator and literary critic. The novel represents his own artistic recreation of his own background, inevitably at least partially autobiographical, but wonderfully realized in modern—some might say post-modern—literary terms. This short novel is made accessible through the skilled translation of George A. Fowler for whom this represents his third translation of fiction from the Indonesian—apart from his several translations of novels from Chinese as well. He has appended valuable—indeed indispensable background information on the region, the peoples, a glossary of special terms used, and a detailed introduction by a prominent French scholar on the ritualized world of the Dayak peoples. A veritable handbook to an otherwise inaccessible culture. While the setting and the mindset of the novel is totally foreign to most people in western cultures, the western reader is importantly reminded of the power and importance of ceremony in life—and what it might represent in any society if we remain open to contemplate its deeper riches. In a grander sense, is not all of life a ceremony?

Stimson From the very first paragraphs of Chapter 1, I was swept into the longhouse, a witness to a healing ceremony of a young person at the edge of death. As the protagonist journeyed through memories and feelings, and descriptions of life passages in the village and surrounding forest, the author and the translator guided me into the heart and culture of Kalimantan, in the interior of Borneo. I could never hope to travel there, and even if I did, I would never experience what this amazing book gave me in each page. This is a rare gift! I have learned terms and ideas in the language and highly developed ethos of a people long out of reach of colonialism, who then meet the threat of globalization to their way and order of life through the practice of their Adat, the moral fiber of their culture, and the many ceremonies of restoration. The descriptions are so vivid in the translation, and the Glossary and informative Notes so enrich the reader's access to this "other world" which is yet the world of our human family.
