In between two Indian tribes, the Potawatomi and Siletz, lies a great lake. According to legend, this lake was the home of the devil. Here, it was said that many bad things happened to the people who did not give due respect to the lake and its master, the devil. Because of this, the people of both tribes only rode their canoes when necessary, to gather fish for their people. Even before they would embark on their day’s job, they would give out sacrifices, often in the form of their best livestock, in order to appease the devil. It was their belief that this would grant them safe access to the lake. However, there was one person from the Potawatomi tribe who did not believe the legends and swam in the lake whenever she pleased. This person was the daughter of the tribe’s chieftain and her name was Gigyago. Gigyago was a young woman with a free spirit and a strong belief in the gifts and miracles life could bring and in the beauty of sincere emotions. She was spirited and often went about her tribe with a demeanor that made everybody appreciate her. She was charming and friendly, and she held a great love for the animals in particular, who also loved her back. She had always dreamed of having a family brought about by love. She believed that marriage was to be spent with the person she could genuinely give her heart to. However, when she finds out her parents have arranged for her to be married to the tribe’s greatest warrior, she is devastated and hesitant. She is disappointed that her decision could be taken away from her like this so easily. Despite her misgivings, Gigyago is open to the idea of getting to know her betrothed before the night of her marriage. She tries to form a relationship with Windago, her husband-to-be, but she is stunned when he rebuffs her with a demeanor that is both cold and distant. Gigyago believes that a warrior like him is not capable of feeling happiness or any kind of love anymore. She expresses her worries to her friend, Halona, who advises her to follow him out hunting. Gigyago takes this advise and follows him in secret, hoping to see him in his more natural state to finally confirm if Windago is as cold as he shows himself to be. Again, he gives her nothing but his cool facade, but Gigyago refuses to give up. She tries again and again and yet he still remains the same. Finally, she is too crushed and disappointed that she refuses to try anymore. Little does Gigyago know, the devil from the lake has been watching her all this time - for many years. When she is most vulnerable, he takes possession of her and everything suddenly becomes a battle of strength and will. When Gigyago discovers that the devil’s powers are in play, she grows desperate. Her world is turned upside down; more and more factors are put into play in this dangerous game of love and power and revelations are made that open Gigyago’s eyes to what has truly been. It is not long before she must decide if the love she has always desired is truly worth giving her life to the devil for.

Review The story's beginning immediately pulls the reader in. The way it is narrated in first person seems to be a suited choice. Characters have their emotions well-described and it resonates well with the reader. The pacing of the story was thrilling and the descriptions are incredibly well-written. The issues presented, such as women empowerment, the liberty to have free will and human degradation, are very real issues that are present today and will surely open the reader's eyes to them. As a whole, plot formation and the development of the characters make for a very satisfying read. --Jonathan Martinez; New York Prints Upon reading the very first few pages, the story was immediately intriguing. The sentences are very well-formed and makes for a suspenseful pacing. The choice of words are profound and go well with the setting of the story, suiting each character's personalities. The conflict was suitably impressive and attention-grabbing, as well as entertaining. By the time the end is reached, the story leaves with the sense of a fantastically tragic end to the plot arc. The technicalities of the novel is supremely adequate and, overall, is a good read. --May Hart; Tribune Publishing

From the Author This is a fictional novel based on a true Native American story.

From the Inside Flap Gigyago is the princess of the Potawatomi Indian tribe. She's always been a free spirit who has treasured the gifts of life and the sacredness of human emotions. However, when she discovers that she is to wed the cold, heartless Windago, who is the tribe's greatest warrior, she is wary. She ventures to find if there could be something else left inside his heart that could love her and give her the kind of family she had always dreamed she would have. She goes to great lengths to discover the warmth in his heart, but it is not long before she is left humiliated and disappointed. Amidst this, there is an evil spirit lurking in her tribe and, unknown to her, it has set her sights on her. Now, as Gigyago must find a way to deal with the resentment she feels for her husband-to-be, she meets another man from the Siletz Indian tribe, a known rival. His name is Apenimon and he is worlds different from Windago. He is also exactly what she had always dreamed in a man. He was warm and passionate and he was not afraid to show his emotions. She knew she was falling for him. All she could think about was him and he was the one invading her thoughts when all she should have been thinking about was Windago. She also knew it was forbidden. She knew her father, the chieftain, would never allow it and he would murder Apenimon at the first sight of him. But despite this, she cannot help but hope and pine for the great Apenimon. And when she later discovers that he is the prince to his own tribe, the stakes are higher.Just when she thinks she has finally had everything figured out, things shift. The things she once knew to be truths reveal themselves to be lies and Gigyago is faced to deal with them all, while struggling to cope and keep a fast hold on her morals and her own values. As worse comes to worst, she is left to endure all amounts of suffering and degradation. She knows she must push through this and she knows she must come up with a plan to save herself, her tribe and the man she truly loves.Danger lurks at every corner, and everybody's lives are now at risk from evil spirits and from Gigyago herself, if she cannot control it. Nothing is safe, everyone could die and she could hurt the man she loved if she chose to do the right thing. Gigyago knows it is all up to her and there is no man nor beast that could help her now. The only thing she can pray to happen is to keep everyone safe - even if it means her own death.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. ~~~Based on a true Native American story~~ By Off Grid..and Loving it! Based on a true Native American story, this short read will grab your attention and hold it to the last page. It is the story of Gigyago, a Princess in her tribe. She has a free spirit, values nature and is betrothed to Windago, the greatest warrior of her tribe. Something just doesn't seem right to her about their upcoming marriage. As the reader will discover she is correct in her instincts. The author has a firm grasp of human nature and illustrates this throughout the book. The two leading male characters, Windago and Apenimon are further analyzed as to the reasons for their behavior patterns.I found it to be a most interesting short read as it delved into human psyches, possession by a spirit, Native American backdrop and an ending which was a surprise to me. Toss in some steamy scenes in the tent and the reader is taken along on the journey to the 'lake of the evil spirit'.Highly recommended.
