This is the story of Ali, growing up in a peaceful Afghanistan, but later having to resist the control of first the Russians and later the Taliban, so he and his family could live at peace in their home. It's the story of many young Afghans, a story of the Afghanistan that was, and a story with hope for a brighter future.

A Far Away Home, by Howard Faber

Review This book was well written and the story definitely captured my attention. I have a special place in my heart for books set in Afghanistan. I don't know what it is, but I love them. Ali's story drew me in from the beginning. His emotions were very real and relatable, even though I could not literally relate to most of the things he went through. This book gave a real (mostly child friendly) look into life in Afghanistan, particularly during the time of Taliban interference. My one complaint is that there was not a lot of depth to many of the characters. Even Ali's children and wife, I knew very little about...I just never felt connected to them. Other than that, I enjoyed this book. --Paige Pagnotta, GoodReads

An Afghan Adventure for the Middle School Reader By David Schelhaas A Far Away Home is the perfect read for the young reader (grades 4-8) who loves adventure and far away places. The protagonist Ali moves from one breath-taking adventure to another, but these are not the contrived adventures one finds in an Indiana Jones sort of tale. Rather, the adventures grow naturally out of his very real circumstances.Ali grows up in a remote rural village in an Afghanistan that is first under the control of the Russians and later the Taliban. These political situations force him into situations--ambushes and treacherous journeys through enemy lines and dramatic airplane flights--that demand sharp wits and great courage, but Ali never falters. Though almost too good to be true sometimes, Ali is an engaging young hero, the kind of person a young reader would wish to emulate.Author Howard Faber deftly moves the plot along from one exciting event to the next, but at the same time, and more importantly, he paints a lovely picture of Afghan village life at that time. We see families where deep love flows between parents and children. We see a culture where ritual and respect for authority are portrayed as wholesome qualities that provide order and stability in the community, where the Islamic culture is not radical but simply foundational to the life of the people.I heartily recommend this novel to any parents interested in providing wholesome books for their children and to all young readers who like a great story.

Faber, himself, lived in Afghanistan for ten years, starting with the Peace Corps in 1965. He worked with a medical group in central Afghanistan, the setting for the story, where he met his main character, Ali.I decided I had to read about the little boy who lived in the remote Bamiyan Province, (the one where the Taliban destroyed the Buddha statues). Just a child at the beginning of the book Ali suffers a disability that keeps his knee from straightening. As a result, he walks with a crutch until, eventually, western medicine arrives in his valley with a hospital and doctors who repair the knee.Ali has many adventures that would seem impossible for someone who lives in such a remote region. Among those adventures is learning to fly—and then using that ability to ferry supplies to his people from Iran where he flees from the Soviets. He returns after the Taliban have taken over, risking his life to protect his family. Like Najib, he resists both the Russians and the Taliban—but without getting caught and imprisoned.Follow the story of one young Afghan man, growing up in a peaceful Afghanistan— through his resistance to the Russians and the Taliban, until the arrival of U.S. troops. The book is A Far Way Home by Howard Faber.
