Then they gave a great cry, its fierce harmony startling a snowy Ptarmigan from its nest and sending my face cowering into the ground. Around me, I could hear the battle serenade echo, and the edges of the wood erupted into a terrifying chorus of attack. Sometimes we follow the rules, and sometimes we find virtue where the rules say it should not exist. This double time-travel story selection takes readers to a place and time few remember in The Spirit Men of Probao, then turns more familiar territory in its head in A Brief and Naïve Portrait of Scotland. Tender and gut-wrenching, these short reads are part of the continuing Leaving Traces time travel series and a prime opportunity to step into the Leaving Traces world. Praise for the other installments in the Leaving Traces series: "It honestly felt like something straight out of a Gaiman novel." "The imagery is absolutely gorgeous. I'm looking forward to reading more of this series." "I didn't want the story to end." "I have read time-travel books before, but this story offers a fresh take."

By Amazon Customer Leaving Traces ticks both my boxes for good writing and wrangling the emotions, so it’s an easy five stars for me. I’d go as far to say this some of the best indie prose I’ve read, achieving the ideal balance of evocation, truth and restraint that makes the pleasure of the text surpass the subject matter. When I say ‘truth’, I have no idea if the accounts are based on fact, but they’re written as if they are, and so read as being believable. There are dozens of lines worth quoting, but I won’t because those lines were written to run together, and their impact is derived from the way one resonates to the next. Quoting out of context wouldn’t do them justice.Leaving Traces is aptly described as a time travel memoir. It isn’t time travel in the popular sense. The observer, a time traveller, is able to visit different times and places to witness certain events without participating in an invasive manner, as she does in two outings in this volume. The best comparison I can make from my reading experience is the writing of Paulo Coelho, which The Spirit Men of Probao reminded me of vividly.Although brief, both stories are rich in the telling. Any disappointment I felt as they ended stemmed from the fact I could happily sit down and devour a much bigger portion. So, more please, Ms Moreland.

The narrative starts out like a travel story set in a nondescript place called Probao (it is supposed to be in Scotland, but I somehow imagined it to be in a poor town in India or Burma or some mystical place in that part of the world). The narrative takes a mysterious turn when the author describes a boxy structure with no roof, open to the skies above. Around this structure congregated men in red robes seemingly lost in a drunken stupor. This strange structure becomes the focal point of the narrative as we discover why the robed men are there and for what purpose. As it turns out, there is a deeper reason why they are gathered in that place, which I won't spoil for you.The narrative is told in beautiful lyrical prose that entices the reader to read on and go along with the mystical journey. It's like fish being reeled in by a sumptuous bite it cannot resist. Though the ending lacks the big payback I expected, it is nonetheless a satisfying read. For this reader, it is more about the lyrical journey. Really quite enjoyable. Four stars.Note that I was provided a promotional copy of this book for a non-reciprocal review.

Rose Two independent stories here, of which the first is an original creation, metaphor, parable, what you will. Can poverty and mortal desperation be charming and engaging without ever coming close to invoking a patronising attitude in the reader? In Scotland the reader witnesses a battle through the eyes of a child, who is nonetheless an adult. I hope that's not a spoiler, I don't think it is.I cannot do better than to quote myself in reviewing Leaving Traces: Between Time and the Stars"I am in awe, absolute awe of Jennifer Moreland's polished talent. This is rich, creamy, dense, layered prose, like the finest poetry, which yet flows simply and quietly by as if it were no more than a note from a friend, and is as easily readable."
