Be careful what you wish for. . . You just might get it.
Nick Gautier is tired of his destiny. He doesn't want to be the son of a demon who's fated to end the world. Nor does he want to see another demon or other preternatural creature who wants to kill or enslave him. He just wants to be normal teenager and have normal problems like everyone else. But normality isn't all it's cracked up to be. When he gets sucked into an alternate reality where his mother has married his mentor and his Atlantean god best friend has become a human geek, he begins to understand that no life is free of pain, and that every person has a specific place in the universe . . . even the son of a hated demon. Most of all, he sees that his powers aren't the curse he thought they were, and that the world needs a champion, especially a champion the world's enemies can't imagine rising up to defend the very people he should destroy.
Old enemies and new friends square off for a major battle that will either restore Nick to his real world, or end him forever in #1 bestselling author Sherrilyn Kenyon's fifth novel in The Chronicles of Nick series, Illusion.

From Booklist When fans last left Nick Gautier, he was fighting for his life. Again. What started with football-team zombies in Infinity (2010) continued on with demons possessing his friends in Inferno (2013), leading fed-up Nick to wish, not for the first time, for normalcy. In this latest installment in the Chronicles of Nick series, from New York Times best-selling Kenyon, he gets his wish, and it’s not at all as he expected: he’s a short blond nerd, the son of a beefy pro-football player, and nothing is as it should be. “Nothing about any of this was right or normal,” he says, upon finding his mother, once a stripper, is now a Realtor. How did he get here, and, more important, how can he get back to his old life? The details of Nick’s “new” life come in little trickles, which makes the revelations pop that much more. Kenyon writes for a mixed audience to great success, easily maintaining the excitement, intrigue, and humor of a series that appeals to guys and girls alike. Grades 7-12. --Stacey Comfort

Either because my standards were already on the floor and because this book is just that good, I don't know. But let's start with Nick. Nick impressed me in this book. He wakes up in another dimension and doesn't even take the time to see what his life is like without demons. He immediately realizes he needs to get back to his body because that's were his world-ending powers are and he can't leave them unattended. That showed real maturity and growth with this character. Next Caleb, he was barely seen in this book and didn't really have much to add to the story till the end, which I hope gets more light in the next book. Now onto the star, Kody. Kody is a character I've always hated. But I always hated people like her that's always keeping secrets and then demanding to be trusted when they've done nothing to earn that trust. Finally getting more light shined onto Kody's past which is Nick's future finally gave a reason as to why she kept so many secrets. Though there were still times that had me complaining about how stupid she is. The comedy was far better then the last book. I was actually invested in the outcome of this book compared to the last book which had become a chore to keep reading. This book still has that "power of love" theme running and it's nice to see that everyone acknowledges that Cherise is probably the most important person to protect due to how she affects Nick's growth. The villians of this book seemed like a pair of twits that just needed to be smacked across the back of the head and reminded how the Scales of Good And Evil works but I could understand their logic which made them bearable. All and all, if you are a fan of this series (not counting the last one), you'll definitely enjoy this book.

This story is #5 of The Chronicles of Nick by Sherrilyn Kenyon. The Chronicles of Nick is a YA "spin off" of her Dark Hunter series. We, the readers, have been afforded the luxury of getting to know Nick from the very beginning of him coming into/discovering his Malachai powers.(The Malachai is the MOST powerful being in the universe)In this book #5 we are thrown into a different world with Nick. He has been put into a different time/dimension where another Nick (same Nick) lives. I was thrown at first and wondering if I was going to enjoy this version of Kenyon's story about Nick...But by Chapter 3 Kenyon had me back with her by taking me back to the current time of Nick and the issues Nick and his friends were facing. This book definitely rated a "5" star for me because once I was hooked I knew I did not want this book to end. Kenyon kept me involved with Nick's story-going back and forth a few different times between the 2 Nicks. Nick's soul/spirit had switched bodies with the alternate universe Nick. I love how "our" Nick had to learn to cope and find help where he could to get back to where he belong. Some things weren't different such as his mother being the loving and caring person she is in his world. The relationships he has with Caleb, Zavid and his beloved Kody grow through everything they work together to keep Nick safe. There are a few new Characters introduced and Simi the amazing Charonte demon is there to help save the day and fight along with his friends. Acheron and Savitar also make appearances. We also learn who Kody's family is. It was a shocker!!I loved this book and dread the months it is going to take to get the next one! But I will wait and I know it will be worth it as each of Kenyon's books are.

Still good, but not as good as earlier books By Lisa Tobleman Illusion is the newest in the Chronicles of Nick series that is one of my favorite current long running young adult series. It has interesting characters and a mythology that encompasses every imaginable pantheon from Atlantean, to Greco Roman. However, in this newest book, Ms. Kenyon suffers from the same problem a lot of authors encounter when writing a long series with a Lot of background already written. (Lets not forget Dark hunters, and the Dream series that take place in the same universe). The whole book covers about three days, and the climax is so anticlimactic I sort of felt cheered. Ok,the Big Bad at the end of the book was interesting, but that was I the last two pages. (I am reading this on a kindle app so pages are not accurate to the print version). The whole story was Nick awakes up at a prom, in a different body with similar people, but not to his world and OMG how do I get back?! Not bad, but nothing compared to earlier fights with Zombies created from video games, and the epic battle from the last book. Now having said that, it was still a fun, great book. A lot was explained, and for the adults who are fans of the Dark Hunter series (except the last two full books those were nightmarish) Ash is in this alternate world. I just feel that if you create a character that is sooo powerful that all he has to do is "think" and he flattens every demon with a wave of his hand that much of the dramatic tension is gone. We are left with a beloved character that is still fun to read, but not nearly as riveting. Thankfully, the Nick series is still YA appropriate, so I will continue to recommend it to our library and our High schoolers who enjoy action adventure novels with a heavy dose of fantasy.
