This enchanting narrative shares two abstract tales as one singular journey. Entwined by action and consequence, the key protagonists are teenagers Evelin Boots and Belleny Vera. Both girls exist and are placed in time across two lands. One is in a reality as we know it, the other, created as a metaphysical realm where its fate is destined by the energy of the ethereal and the mental health of Evelin Boots. This is a pastiche of the lives of others. A premonition is forewarned. Now it’s a race against time for young Evelin to find solace and peace within herself before her anxieties bring eternal darkness into her life and manifest as tyranny and terror, in the metaphysical realm of Mare-Marie.

From the Author For all those who wish to get away from it all, including themselves and follow someone else who feels the same way.
From the Inside Flap Enter a world of whimsy, abandoned forests, dark glens and peculiarities that make the foundations of metaphysical Mare-Marie. A once ethereal foreshore is now a spawning and fetid ditch of macabre and gruesome creatures, oddities and wicked curses. Princess Belleny is a recluse, she withers away physically and emotionally in a self confined tomb, finding solace with her motley friends the Orphans in the dark dens of the Crystalon Castle. Time is idling away in their quiet existence. The young Princess and her close knit of friends are awoken by a mysterious newcomer, the two-tailed Bateau. His presence causes a chain reaction of dramatic and bewitching events that lead to a battle of justice and honour against a vengeful shadow witch and her rising army. Positioned in reality as we know it, there's a bright and volatile teenager named Evelin Boots who is seeking a normal existence with her best friend, Milton. With rising confliction and burgeoning anxiety, she is unaware of her unconscious psychic ability that causes paradigm shifts in the parallel Mare-Marie. A premonition is forewarned; when a roaring wind rips across the arid and engulfing Vheen Desert, when a dark and pendulous sky meets a rising and blackening sea, a light will go out and all creatures in Mare-Marie will be devoured. It's a race against time for Evelin to find solace and peace within herself before her anxieties bring eternal darkness across another realm. This enchanting novel shares two tales of a singular journey, all entwined in the ethereal, the abstract and the unique pastiche of the lives of others.

I don't have a preferred genre or a list of authors I exclusively read. Mostly, I wait for a book to jump out at me. Within the world of on line book stores and social media, it becomes completely visual. For the other side of Eve, it was a simple Twitter post.Paul Ikin's illustrations are expertly bold and eye catching, so much so it made it impossible for me to scroll through my endless Twitter feed without stopping to find out more about this book. Within a few seconds, I decided I had to read this book. The story centres around Evelin Boots, AKA Eve. Struggling to overcome anxiety, Eve creates the fantasy world of Princess Belleny: Mare-Marie, transporting the reader to a world of fantastical beasts and enchanting scenery.Firstly: Eve. Beautiful, misunderstood and so uncannily the perfect teenage misfit, Eve. She will steal your heart from page one; grab you, move you, force you to feel. Eve doesn't sugar coat the truth. She understands the limitations of her anxiety and wears it with pride. She surrounds herself with only those who she feels comfortable with, and this in itself is such a beautiful part of the story. There is a part of me that loves Eve's character because she isn't the helpless female lead. Yes, she is dealing with her own limitations, yet her strength comes from her ability to admit that she isn't perfect, making her a worthy role model to teens and pre-teens.Secondly: Princess Belleny. Unlike Eve, Princess Belleny lives in a kingdom, the daughter of King Vasilis Vera. Confined to her room, she shares her life with a pack of gloriously unusual beasts. Princess Belleny shares common personality traits of Eve, and as the two stories move forward, the changes in Princess Belleny's life reflect how Eve is coping mentally. The world of Mare-Marie comes to life not only within the descriptions of the Princess' beasts, but also the kingdom itself. As the Princess discovers the world outside of her castle, the gardens surround you, capturing the beautiful essence of Eve's growth in reality. It's a step back into your childhood where you spent countless hours in Oz or Narnia with characters that you fell in love with, unsure of what felt more real: Reality or fantasy?Within the two worlds, you meet an endless list of characters, all with their own quirks, however I can't end this review without mentioning The Weatherman. He was the stand out for me, and a wonderfully mad hatter. And that's exactly what the conversations between The Weatherman and Eve are like: those of Alice and The Mad Hatter. He is so incredibly thought out and infectious that his humorous attitude forces a smile to your face from the very moment his character is introduced.Of course, I can't forget to mention the illustrations. Described as reminiscent of Hans Christian Anderson, each beautiful drawing captures the essence of the chapter to follow. A beautiful addition to an already wondrous story, the intricate black and white illustrations make this novel something special. This story is thoughtful and engaging; meaningful and daring. I highly recommend this book for all, especially the YA market. Within Eve's magical world of Princess Belleny, there is a lesson to be learned, and we will all benefit from it.

Beautifully engaging debut fantasy By kashbot The Other Side of Eve is a beautifully illustrated book inside and out, but most importantly a beautiful read. The Other Side of Eve traverses two contrasting worlds: the familiar modern-day world occupied by Eve Boots, and the fantasy kingdom of Princess Belleny. When Eve's own thoughts (and anxieties) begin to affect Princess Belleny's world, this interwoven story takes off in surprising and exciting ways. The novel is full of adventure, humour and tenderness and also gently addresses issues of mental health. I caught myself laughing out loud regularly and the characters, and creatures, are all richly drawn with distinct voices. It's a really enjoyable and heart-warming read, and is a very worthwhile addition to a middle-school reader's library (I'm about to pass this on to my 10 and 12 year old stepsons so will edit with an update on which found it more engaging). You also really can't talk about this book without mentioning the beautiful black and white chapter illustrations. They hark back to the way books for young adults used to look and give the print edition a very collectible feel.A delightful debut and a beautiful addition to any bookshelf. I highly recommend it. Couldn't put it down.

Bringing two worlds together this story is both enchanting & intriguing, with a wondrous cast of characters that'll keep you turning the pages. A sort of Lewis Carroll meets Narnia this story is one you'll be glad you picked up.
