Artist was always the love of Johnny’s life. But things change. Now he has to kill her . . . before she kills him. It’s a snowy night in St. Petersburg, December 1916. Revolution is in the air. It’s the night Rasputin will be murdered. Before two Indian couriers are safely aboard their ship they’re waylaid by young Bolsheviks: a shadowy Russian, a Pole from an aristocratic family and his lover, a beautiful American adventuress. The three had been ordered by the party bosses to steal a valise the Indians are carrying back to their Maharajah. The valise containing the Human Heart, is an immense emerald, the surprise within Fabergé’s last Easter egg, a gift for Alexandra commissioned not by Nicholas, but by Rasputin himself. Although a well-meaning gesture, the gift is an indiscretion so serious it’s very existence could bring down the monarchy. No longer a committed revolutionary when he realizes the content of the valise could make the owner powerful beyond his wildest dreams, the Russian kills the Indians in cold blood then attempts to kill his partner. But his intended victim gets the upper hand and shoots his comrade in self-defense. Then driven my a momentary impulse the Pole takes the valise and flees Russia, leaving the Russian for dead, his lover in jeopardy, and in his wake, a tempest of evil that will follow him wherever he tries to hide, whether it be in Hemingway’s war-weary Paris of the 1920s or the noir streets of New York at the out break of World War II. Although The Human Heart is about the intrigue surrounding the ravenous pursuit of riches and revenge, it is more about the provenance of regret, and the life we are often forced to live as a result of the impetuousness of youth.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great book, full of action, sensuality and a history lesson! By EdMNY I'm an avid mystery reader who also likes historical fiction and good literature. Every once in a while, I come across a book that works in all three categories. I think The Human Heart does just that.It is an excellent story that spans several decades, with action taking place in St. Petersburg, Paris and New York. Clearly, the author has done a great job on his research. The scenes painted in Tsarist Russia were incredibly well done, as well as the scenes in Paris a decade later. And the author clearly knows New York like the back of his hand, with dense descriptions of restaurants, hotels, bars and other locations from a bygone era. I loved the historical references and the scenes the way they were painted. Most importantly, this book has great characters and action sequences, as well as scenes of intense sensuality. There is also a real history lesson here on the Russian revolution and the aftermath, and how it played out in Europe and American before World War II. I knew little about any of these before this book.At its mystery core, there is a theft of a large jewel, which is sought after for many reasons, including political ones. I thought the author did a great job in weaving a number of complex thoughts together against a historical backdrop that was so fresh and new to me.All in all, I would heartily recommend this book to anyone. It works as a summer beach read, but is probably best enjoyed sitting comfortably at home in front of a fireplace with a glass of wine!
