MURDER IN BAGHDAD No place on earth is more dangerous than Baghdad, especially if you’re Judge Isha Hami. The murder of a former Iraqi Intelligence Officer and the subsequent arrest of his killers threaten to unravel fragile alliances and plunge Iraq into civil war. Appointed Iraq’s first female Judge, Hami is randomly assigned to hear the case. As the Americans fight to maintain order, Bathists, Shias and Sunnis pressure Hami to dismiss a case none of them can afford to have go to trial. Sworn to uphold the rule of law, Hami refuses. In the shadowy maelstrom of violence and shifting loyalties that is post war Baghdad, she stands alone. Only Ted Kehr’s troubled Green Beret team mate, Ralph Jackson, and CIA Agent Hank Jenkins will fight to save Hami’s life . . . if, as Baghdad burns, they can reach her in time . . . if, they can save themselves first. Spanning two wars and two lives, Baghdad Burning is a different kind of thriller from a different kind of story-teller. Joseph Max Lewis served as a member of an Operational Detachment in the U.S. Army's Seventh Special Forces Group, the storied Green Berets. During his service Lewis received antiterrorist training and his detachment was tasked to "Special Projects." Afterward, he served as an instructor at the Special Forces Qualification Course. Lewis attended the Pennsylvania State University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, the University of Tel Aviv in Israel, and the University of Pittsburgh, receiving degrees in International Politics and Law while being certified in Middle East Studies. After living and studying abroad, first in the Middle East and then Southeast Asia, Lewis returned home to practice law. He’s a columnist in the New Bethlehem Leader-Vindicator and currently lives, writes, and practices law in and around Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Moving on it must be near a week since I read this prequel after starting back at the beginning again. It was an interesting read and for the most part enjoyable and if I could just rate the plot-line it would get a higher rating but there were other factors to consider. Guess I should explain. The first part of the back-story with a single scene and events happening in another's life was particularly good but did think they should have been written separately in there own space. Would have preferred a quicker pace as it did take its time moving from A to B and the intensity I know I should have felt never really build past the first part. Putting those issues aside, the plot-line itself got me involved and held my attention and I really liked how it focused equally on those connected to what was going on. From those in power with an added twist to the underhanded tactics of others in the hope of preventing the inevitable while Ralph Jackson and Judge Isha Mani (central characters) stood firm, not letting their past influence their decision. Talk about a grey area. I enjoyed the action which goes without saying and the quirky side to some of the characters and being well used to the like of Hank Jenkins in books, he didn't disappoint. I probably liked his intelligence which leads me into the most disappointing aspect which has to do with Ralph and Isha. Regardless of the fact they weren't moving on their decision, don't you think or maybe it was just me that they would have some inner conflict going on and maybe thinking of the consequences but no, nothing. Sorry and I'm not happy saying it made their characters seem one dimensional. Also felt the story ended sudden even a prologue would have tied it up better in regards to Ralph and ...So I'm on middle ground giving a lower rating in another wise well though out plot-line that probably deserved 4 if not 5 star rating.

Baghdad Burning is a gripping novel, grabbed me on the first page and kept me reading through to the last page. The characters are well develped and made me care for all the protagonists, especially Judge Hami and Ralph Jackson. But, and this is the reason for my 'headline' title: the story, plot and characters really earned a 5-star rating. But the book itself could have benefitted from a better copy-edit/line-edit, as I found a lot of missing words and duplicated words, such as, the the, and and--well you get the picture. While this was somewhat distracting as I read (Kindle edition), it did not deter me from reading to the end. The action, characters—and the plot—captivated me a kept me swiping to the next page, and the next. I was almost disappointed when it ended. I wanted more. As a result, I just downloaded two of Mr. Lewis' books: Separation of Church and State, and The Diaries of Pontius Pilate. Can't wait to read them.

Spell binding By Alice Prucha Good story of the effects of combat, the intricacies of Iraqi factions' relationships, and the seeming impossibility of doing what is right. Good character development: all felt well-fleshed out. Military jargon is explained without condescending attitude. Plot pulls the reader in from the first page, keeping our attention till the Last page. Readers of military novels will appreciate Baghdad Burning.
