Part Hitchcock, part Hinton, this first-ever stand-alone novel from Heather Brewer, New York Times bestselling author of the acclaimed Chronicles of Vladimir Tod series, uses classic horror elements to tell a darkly funny coming-of-age story about the dangerous power of belief and the cost of blind loyalty that Kirkus Reviews called “a slick, spooky, chilling mystery.”

When Stephen's dad says they're moving, Stephen knows it's pointless to argue. They're broke from paying Mom's hospital bills, and now the only option left is to live with Stephen's grandmother in Spencer, a backward small town that's like something out of The Twilight Zone. Population: 814.

Stephen's summer starts looking up when he meets punk girl Cara and her charismatic twin brother, Devon. With Cara, he feels safe and understood—and yeah, okay, she's totally hot. In Devon and his group, he sees a chance at making real friends. Only, as the summer presses on, and harmless nights hanging out in the cemetery take a darker turn, Stephen starts to suspect that Devon is less a friend than a leader. And he might be leading them to a very sinister end. . . .

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Forced by financial stress to leave his mother behind in a mental health institution, Stephen and his father reluctantly move to a tiny town to live with his bitter, unhappy grandmother. Stephen's summer starts to look brighter when he meets cute outcast Cara and her fun-loving brother Devon. As the townspeople reveal their bizarre local mythology, Stephen slowly discovers that Devon's gang is up to something more sinister than just drinking in the cemetery, but it may be bigger and darker than he can imagine. Stephen is a well-developed character, with the right amount of snark, lust, and angst for an honest portrayal of a 16 year old. The dark, mysterious tone combined with a surprise ending bolster the book's thematic warning on the danger of belief. Instantly engaging—with plenty of suspense surrounding the town's secret—this supernatural mystery will please fans of Brewer's previous vampire hunter series (Dutton) and new readers looking for less paranormal, and more quiet horror.—Hannah Farmer, Austin Public Library, TX

Review “Dark, twisted, brilliant.” (Madeleine Roux, New York Times bestselling author of Asylum)“Stephen is a well-developed character, with the right amount of snark, lust, and angst. Instantly engaging--with plenty of suspense surrounding the town’s secret--this supernatural mystery will please fans of Brewer’s previous vampire hunter series and new readers.” (School Library Journal)“The novel’s final pages will surely shock readers: The author takes great glee in not just presenting a great reveal toward the end, but also twisting the knife. Keen-eyed readers may spot the twist, but few will predict just how far it goes. A slick, spooky, chilling mystery.” (Kirkus)“A sinister tale of a frightening legend and the power of belief. With an ending that will shock and sadden, Brewer takes readers on a journey of friendship, recklessness, secrets, and betrayal. This is a perfect choice for those who enjoy mystery and suspense with dark and twisted characters.” (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA))“Every aspect of this story is just plain creepy--in the best way possible. If you want some teen angst, a hilariously blunt narrator and small-town attitudes with your horror, pick this one up.” (RT Book Reviews, 4 Stars)

From the Back Cover

Welcome to Spencer.

Population: 814.

It's a backward town—and it's hiding a terrible secret.

When Stephen's dad says they're moving, Stephen knows it's pointless to argue. They're broke from paying Mom's hospital bills, and now the only option left is to live with Stephen's grandmother, a woman as bitter and stuck as the town of Spencer itself.

Stephen's summer starts looking up when he meets punk girl Cara and her charismatic twin brother, Devon. The twins have family problems of their own and aren't exactly close, but Stephen is drawn to them, each for different reasons.

Mixing classic horror elements with a darkly funny coming-of-age story, New York Times bestselling author Heather Brewer brings her razor-sharp edge to a story about the dangerous power of belief and the cost of blind loyalty, taking readers to the brink of madness and past the point of no return.

Bristol At the start of "Cemetery Boys," the adolescent hero, Stephen, has recently moved under duress with his father to his father's former hometown to live with his aloofly disapproving grandmother. He is currently angry at his dad, not just for the move, but for committing his mom to a mental hospital, after she begins talking about mysterious winged monsters, and none of the standard treatments have any effect. Now Stephen is stuck in a rural small town in the middle of nowhere with little to do but observe the locals. But one night chasing after an intruder in their yard, he discovers a mysterious journal containing artwork and quotes about the "Winged Ones," monsters that the townsfolk believe need regular human sacrifices in order to keep the "good times" coming. Soon he becomes acquainted with twins his age: the rebellious Cara, with whom he falls in love, and her brother, Devon, who seems to be recruiting Stephen to join his group of friends, who mostly do teenage boy things like commit acts of vandalism and drink, but whose goings-on seem to have a more sinister side to them. Stephen begins to realize that someone has to intervene in the situation, but how can he get help when the entire town seems to believe in this "myth"?It took me awhile to figure out where this book was going. This all takes place away from school and has the somewhat meandering feel of being on summer vacation, There are a couple of plot twists that I didn't see coming, one of which did not seem too believable. However, the author does a great job creating a suspenseful and creepy atmosphere and setting. The ending is grim, however, and may leave readers who may prefer something more optimistic unsatisfied.

By SAlaska Stretches of dusty small-town, ingrown minds, and diner food set the stage for The Cemetery Boys, a story about family. However, this isn't the family-friendly sort of family story; this is what happens when family bonds are twisted and broken and what happens when those bonds don't heal. Some consequences are small. Others are terrifying.I liked the premise of The Cemetery Boys, but found the book full of characters whose actions didn't make sense. The poisoned relationship between Stephen and his grandmother is never explained. It would have been interesting to know what nurtured the bitterness and anger in the grandma. I kept waiting for a great backstory that never came. In fact, there were several places in the book where characters were thrown in without much development: BAM--crazy moms! BAM--librarian! BAM--opposing peer group!Note: Sadly, I find it hard to believe that a community as run-down as Spencer was able to support a library with a librarian.Another Vine reviewer recommended skipping the prologue. I agree. The prologue previews such an important scene that it nearly functions as a spoiler. There is so much more story than what we're given in The Cemetery Boys. I wanted more.

By Lucy Cat CEMETERY BOYS isn't automatically the kind of novel that would appeal to me, however, I am attending a YA book convention later this year and have made it a personal goal to read at least one book from every author in attendance! This also gives me an excuse to break out of my comfort zone (typically, sci-fi and fantasy novels). I was pleasantly surprised by CEMETERY BOYS, most notably, by Heather Brewer's talent for prose. Her writing is excellent and polished, even when though subject matter is a bit dark and off-beat. As a standalone, this is a nice, fast read (about 3.5 hours for me) and has a satisfying beginning, middle and end. It reminds me somewhat of "Are You Afraid of the Dark" and "Twilight Zone" as far as television and is comparable to Gentlemen and Trapped by Michael Northrop. Its one part goth, one part thriller, one part fantasy and some sprinkling of teenage angst. I will definitely look for more of Heather Brewer's books in the future!
